Grant Awarded St. Clement Community Foundation awarded the Sandra M. Bereitschaft Foundation a grant of $300.00 to provide for postage costs of the Senior Talk newsletter and increase distribution of the newsletter in the Floraville and Paderborn area. Grant awards were made for programs in the area formerly supported by St. Clement Hospital. We would like to thank the St. Clement Community Foundation for supporting our Foundation and the Millstadt Senior Center.

Veterans Day 2014 Veterans, for our program this year to honor your service to our country, please bring in pictures, campaign ribbons, or souvenirs from

your time in service. We will display them in the Senior Center on Veterans Day and return them to you following lunch on Veteran’s day. Thanks to all Veterans who served our country.

It’s hard to believe November is here already. Millstadt Senior Center is offering several new shopping trips. Be sure to sign up for them, including our Thanksgiving Dinner on November 20 and the Christmas Brunch and Party on December 24. Also, don’t forget to vote! (Remember we will be closed Election Day and the day after

Thanksgiving this month) As we take time to give thanks this November, let’s remember those who gave their lives so we can be free. Many of our friends are veterans, and we will honor them with a free lunch on Tuesday, November 11. Join us as we honor our friends and pray for those who are serving in the military now. As always, if you have a concern, praise, or any other comments you would like to share, don’t hesitate to stop by my office. If you would like to volunteer at the center, please stop by and talk to me about opportunities. I’d like to extend a warm thank you to all that helped with Bunco which raised nearly $1,000 and the Sandra M Bereitschaft Foundation Trivia night that raised $4,800! Thank you for a great job and hard work that you do to keep our Center and the Meals on Wheels program going. We are thankful this Thanksgiving and always for overwhelming community support and for such a wonderful Senior Center made possible by all our volunteers and supporters.

Thank-you Seniors For the fourth year, seniors at the Community Center have folded napkins and forks for the Millstadt Sister Cities to use at their potato pancake stand at the St. Louis Oktoberfest. This year over two thousand forks and napkins were folded into plastic sleeves by several of our senior ladies. Thank-you ladies!

New Quilters Wanted New quilters are welcome to learn from a group of experienced quilters. Everyone is welcome and no experience is necessary just a desire to learn and have some fun. Two quilts are set-up in frames on the second floor of the Community Center and one quilt is especially beginner friendly. Quilting experts on hand.

Apples Eat an apple a day. A recent study found that women who ate apples every day for a year had a 23% drop in LDL (bad) cholesterol and shed about 3 pounds. Enjoy the fall fruit in abundance, but don’t peel. Apple skin, an excellent source of insoluble fiber, makes you feel fuller faster.

The Millstadt Historical Society (MHS) will once again host a home-made wine contest on Tues-day, November 25, 7:30 PM, at the Community Center. Anyone living within the Millstadt School District is eligible to participate. All that’s re-quired is one bottle of your best wine for the con-test and an additional bottle of any homemade wine (so everyone can enjoy the fruits of your labor). The MHS will provide snacks to company the wine. Last year’s winners were: 1st Cindy Kel-ler(White Zinfadel); 2nd Luke Wessel(White Grape and Peach); 3rd Glen Mehrtens (Peach). You are invited to join the Faith and Family Church for their Christmas Show performance “A Christmas Kaleidoscope”, Saturday, December 6th at 3:00 pm.

This is a brand new show this year. It will be filled with a variety of music styles performances, creative elements such as drama, comedy, dance and a beautiful presentation of the Christmas Story will be included. The performance will be approximately 1 hour, 15 minutes. They will have spaces for wheelchair seating, walkers and regular seating so that everyone can sit together. There is no charge for this event. Please respond by Friday, November 28, 2014 with your seating arrangements. Sue Hucke and Barb Sparkman began this monthly gathering of Bunco Babes in Sep 2005. We are beginning our 10th year of throwing dice at these ladies homes. Each month 2 of the members team up and hostess a fabulous night of fun and food at one of their homes. Some of the members have changed over the years but several in the group have been coming from the beginning. We do take a couple months off in the summer and are always ready to get back to rolling dice when September arrives. Barb Zollner and Sue York hosted an October Mustache Party at Barb Zollner's home. The hostesses usually create a theme and require each babe to wear a certain color.You never know what awaits you until you arrive.It always makes for a great night of laughter.

The Food Pantry now has installed an ADA compliant ramp that will make things so much easier for everyone that enters the building. A big Hearty THANK YOU to Castle Maintenance and the Village of Millstadt for making this possible. Joe Goudey along with his family and Janice Seidlitz, have generously donated their time and talent in the installation of the ramp. In addition, he is taking care of some sorely needed work there such as the removal of an air conditioner that no longer works and closing in the opening where heat escaped and critters could gain easy access, plus so many other odd jobs that improves the functionality of the pantry. The Village of Millstadt, approved the new ramp and is helping with the cost of materials. Some of the existing material was salvaged and reused to further reduce the cost of this project. Once again the volunteers at the food pantry want all to know how grateful we are for the generosity that this community continues to show. A mere thank you to all those that are involved in helping our neighbors that are less fortunate, just never seems like enough

DID YOU SIGN IN? Knowing who is at lunch at the Center is important for a number of reasons. First of all it’s good to keep track so if someone isn’t there for a few days we can contact them to make sure everything is ok. Second, when you sign in and are registered we are able to submit your name to receive our grant money to help pay for the meals. A way to look at it is that if you aren’t registered and signed in we can’t send a bill for your lunch to the Area Agency on Aging.

With winter coming up we all worry about getting around on the ice and snow. But sometimes it is more dangerous in the house. One of the best things you can do in the house to prevent injury is to take your time.

Take time to get a step stool or ladder to reach high shelves, kitchen chairs are not stable. Set the ladder up correctly and get off and move it rather than stretching over to get something. Keep your most used items at arm’s reach rather than having to reach up or down to get something.

Take time to put on supportive shoes. House slippers and flip-flops are loose and often slippery. Barefoot is often not any better. Shoes need to be on if you need to run outside or go down the basement from time to time.

Speaking of basements, make sure the lights are on and hold onto the rail when you go up and down steps. Take extra trips rather than carrying too much at one time. If you are alone, try to wait for a family member to help you, or better yet, have them to do it for you. If this is not possible, make sure you are carrying your phone or have a lifeline button in case of emergency.

Another cause of falls is dizziness. If you have problems with getting lightheaded it’s even more important to take your time or get some help. Sit at the side of the bed for a moment before getting up. Use a cane or walker if you are unsteady.

Other sources of injury include tripping over your pet, slipping on the wet floor or spilled liquid, and, of course, tripping over a loose rug or an extension cord. Keep your eyes open. Turn on the lights. Take your time. Be safe inside.

Almost-yes! The cycle starts—Advent—anticipation—calendars--brisk walks filled with the aromas of sugar, molasses, and Hartshorne cookies wafting from windows and doors. And, then, nostrils are assailed with the piney perfume of wreaths and trees. Christmas…candle lights aglow…then snuffed with smoke ascending. Twelve days until Epiphany…more a repetitive, melodious, acoustic experience than a scented enchantment. The succeeding weeks provide a kaleidoscope of snowflakes, a crystalline purity, a smoke fume curling upward from fireplaces and chimneys. Phil takes a peak. Until finally…yes! Doughnuts and pancakes bubble

to herald the weekly seductive Friday fish frying. St. Valentine’s roses pervade for a day. The odor of corned beef and cabbage engulf the senses. Meanwhile, buds burgeon, slowly unfurling, until in their glory lilies

pervade…sweet lilies and overwhelming incense foretell the vigil of o’er. New life springs forth. Hams, roast. The weeks after Easter are here once more. The crispness of air gives way to redolence: the teasing/sneezing of pollens. The bouquet of lilies, lilacs, roses, geraniums and wild onions anticipate the spirit of bloom and growth. Fragrances overwhelm. There it is! The “smell” of green! First cut! Inhale deeply…savor…labor! Through the long, warming weeks scents recur and compete: the stench of fertilized fields, mouth-watering smoke from grilled ribs/snouts, astringents from chlorinated pools, musty sweaty t-shirts, wet dog. Eventually the oppression of heat submerges all

– except the pungency of tar on renewed streets. Wait! It is an apples and cinnamon copper kettle bubbling over the fire. Ambrosia tantalizes taste buds. Irritating horseradish clears the sinus. Not long until the leafy promise succumbs to rakes and pyres in

ultimate submission. The woodsy aroma of smoldering foliage hovers as a piquant haze on the countryside. Scents…seasons…expectation…absolution…rejuvenation…restoration…appreciation…(sniff)…Yes! The aroma of turkey baking, gravy simmering, pie mincing, thanks rendering. The bouquet of the annual feast…a cycle…. Anticipation…

Open Enrollment Medicare Part D Help Available

Tuesdays from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm Beginning on October 21 Until December 2

Call For Appointment 476-3731 This year Medicare’s Open Enrollment starts on Wednesday, Oct. 15, and ends at midnight on Sunday, Dec. 7 (Pearl Harbor Day). All plans will have Jan. 1 as their start date.

This is the time when you can make changes to your Part D plan or Medicare Advantage plan or you can enroll if you missed your enrollment time when you were first eligible. Below are the changes that a Medicare beneficiary can make during OEP (open enrollment period): • Enroll in a new Part D Medicare Prescription Drug Plan. • Change from one Part D Medicare Prescription Drug Plan to a new Part D Medicare Prescription Drug Plan. • Enroll in a Part C Medicare Advantage Plan with Prescription Drugs • Change from one Part C Medicare Advantage Plan to a new Part C Medicare Advantage Plan. • Return to Original Medicare and purchase a Medicare Supplement and enroll in a Part D Medicare Prescription Drug Plan. • Return to Original Medicare only and enroll in a Part D Medicare Prescription Drug Plan • Or Return to Original Medicare with no Part D plan. Don’t forget there is a penalty for not enrolling in a Part D Medicare Prescription Drug plan when first eligible. For those who already have either a Part C Medicare Advantage plan with or without prescription drugs or a standalone Part D Medicare Prescription Drug plan, Medicare’s Open Enrollment is the time to make sure your drug plan or Medicare Advantage plan you are currently on or thinking of enrolling in still meets your needs, especially if you had any changes to your health. Millstadt Chief of Police Ed Wilkerson joined 41 graduates of the 6th class of the Millstadt Senior Citizen Police Academy. They were proud to accept their certificates at their graduation ceremony on Tuesday, October 13, 2014. As part of this program, Millstadt senior citizens learned about police procedures, gang awareness, health and nutrition programs available for seniors, and took part in seeing the police dog first hand. As part of the program, participants were given an up-close look at the day-to-day operations from Millstadt police officers.

We are thrilled here at Garden Place to spotlight one of our wonderful seniors for the month of November. Meet Shirley Elkins. Shirley was born on July 6, 1925 in Hurst Illinois. Her parents were Glen and Hilda Elkins. She has 3 younger brothers Richard, Disk and Don. I’m sure she learned to hold her own with them! She graduated from Hurst Bush

High School in 1943, and shortly thereafter went to College in Chicago where she earned a degree as a Paralegal. Most of her lifelong career was spent as a Paralegal in Chicago and she retired at around 57 years old. Shirley never married but she did have nieces and nephews that she spent time with, and in her own words said, “I tried not to spoil them.” But we all know how hard it is not to! She enjoys gardening and working with flowers as well as reading in her spare time. Her favorite novels were Mystery Novels. She played the clarinet and really enjoys her music. Shirley attended Moody Church in Chicago where she spent a lot of her time helping in the children’s ministry and women’s bible study. After all these years of living, she said, “the most important thing in life is to be right with the lord.” We are delighted to have Shirley in our Garden Place family, and her favorite thing to do here is: you guessed it, Just Relax. Garden Place welcomes our Newest Family members!!

MEAL PRICES The suggested donated cost of the noon meal served

daily at the Millstadt Senior Center is $4.50 per meal.

The average actual cost per meal is over $10.00. In

addition to the amount paid to IGA or West End Bar

and Grill for each meal, we must cover the cost of

serving containers, cups, napkins, transportation,

beverages and salaries. Over 400 meals are served

or delivered weekly to seniors in Millstadt Township,

Freeburg and Smithton. Without the support of the

many volunteers and donations from the community

the meal cost for each senior would be considerably

higher than the $4.50 suggested donation. Thanks

to all our volunteers and all those who donate or

contribute cups, dessert plates and other items to

the Senior Center!

Bunco Fun On September 18, St. James Parrish was the site of another fun evening of Bunco. Darleen Sandheinrich, Bonnie Mueller, Sheila Campe, Shirley Rinck, Carol King, and Carol Osick made sure the tables were set-up with dice and scorecards, the desserts were mouthwatering and plenty of bunco prizes were ready to go home at the end of the evening. The event raised $914.00 for the Millstadt Senior Center. Thank-you to everyone who made the event a success.

Christmas Gift Idea If you need a Christmas gift for a parent, grandparent, neighbor or friend, consider pre-paid meal tickets for a hot noon meal at the Millstadt Senior Center. Each ticket is just $4.50 and includes an entrée, vegetable or salad, bread, dessert and beverage. A great value for just $4.50. The meal tickets fit nicely in a stocking or Christmas card.

Something about election month and Watergate may also be the reason for thinking about this pistachio salad recipe.20 ounce can of crushed pineapples 1 package, 3.4 oz. pistachio instant pudding 1 cup miniature marshmallows ½ cup chopped pecans 1 ½ cups cool whip Combine the first four ingredients. Stir in the cool whip. Chill one hour.

Services Available Meals on Wheels One of the Center’s most important programs, the Meals on Wheels program provides daily meals to people who have difficulty getting out of the house and/or cooking for themselves. Not only are we able to supply necessary food, but the driver delivering the meal is able to ascertain how the client is getting along and share some companionship. We have a number of folks dedicated to providing these services. They give freely of their time and energy to deliver the meals, make contact with the recipient and report back to the Center. The majority of the “regular” drivers volunteer one day per week and most have said it is highly rewarding for them.

Lunch Program Lunch is served Monday through Friday at 12 noon. You must be 60 years of age or older to qualify for this program. It is appreciated that if you want lunch you call the center by 3:00 pm in order to sign up for lunch on the following day. When you come in you may sign yourself up for the next day. If you like, you may sign up for the entire week or month. If you know that you can not make it and you have signed up, please call and let us know that you will not be here and tell us when you will be back for lunch. If you have any questions concerning the lunch program please contact Patty Evansco at 476-3731.

Porch Sale October 18, was one of the colder days in the month, but it did keep not keep shoppers from finding and buying one-of-kind items at the Senior Center porch sale. The weather was a little cold and breezy under the porch at the Community Center but the shoppers found enough hot buys to raise $360.00 for bingo prizes and other items for the Senior Center. Thank-you to all who donated items or made purchases. See you next spring!
