Donations support the advancement of pediatrics and help the Academy continue to meet the needs of children through education, research and advocacy programs. Fiscal Year 2014 The AAP Board of Directors approved 16 grants totaling in $735,776. Research Consensus Conference on Children, Adolescents and the Media: Funding will support the follow-up activities (proceedings, recommendations and advocacy materials and tour) for a planned research symposium that will meet a vital goal of the AAP strategic priority on Children, Adolescents and Media. Grant amount: $28,200

VIP Network Quality Improvement for Urinary Tract Infection Project (UTI QI Project): The QuIIN Value in Inpatient Pediatrics (VIP) Network quality improvement project aims to improve care for pediatric patients hospitalized with urinary tract infection (UTI). Funding will support an expert group meeting to best implement the UTI QI Project, as well as the use of QIDA. Grant amount: $10,420

Head Start/Medical Home Learning Collaborative to Address Toxic Stress: Funds will bring together key leaders who represent both medical homes and HS/EHS programs to begin developing a framework for and implement a learning collaborative for which the goal is to increase the level of collaboration between these two systems around the issue of toxic stress. Grant amount: $100,000

Poverty and Child Health Message Development: Funding supports work with a communications consultant to develop unique and effective messages that clearly communicate how poverty impacts child health and why all children and Americans will benefit from addressing this issue through programmatic and policy interventions. Grant amount: $75,000

Friends of Children Fund Healthy People 2020: Funds will provide chapters with financial support to develop and implement projects that will improve the health and welfare of children as related to the Healthy People 2010/2020 objectives. Chapters that have received funding thus far have raised awareness for each of these topic areas; built strong community partnerships; developed resources; disseminated materials to pediatricians and families; and provided outreach to diverse populations. Grant amount: $106,000 Brush, Book, and Bed (BBB) Pilot: BBB represents an opportunity for pediatricians to promote the establishment of healthy night time routines among young children (ages 0 - 3) and their families. Funds will support a pilot of a larger campaign that may be pursued by the Academy. Grant amount: $24,874

Helping Pediatricians Address Electronic Cigarette Use with Patients and Families: Funds support survey and focus group methodology to better understand the type of messaging needed to address electronic cigarette (e-cigarette) use with children and families in pediatric practice. Grant amount: $13,920 Community Access to Child Health (CATCH) Grants: The CATCH mission is that every child in every community have a medical home and access to needed health care services to reach optimal health and well-being. Funding will support 28 grants to be made to pediatricians and residents. Grant amount: $100,000 Chapter Quality Network, Phase 4 (CQN4): The Chapter Quality Network (CQN) is designed to help chapters build capacity to lead quality improvement efforts with member practices that result in improved care for children. Funding will support a strategy to offer CQN to four additional chapters using the curriculum and tools developed in previous iterations of CQN. Grant amount: $100,000

Promoting Resilience: The Pediatric Response: Funds contribute to the making of a video containing a brief overview of the impact of childhood adversity such as abuse, neglect, violence, and poverty can result in toxic stress, which has demonstrated links to chronic physical, mental, and social health issues - even early death. The video will be used by pediatricians in public speaking engagements, Webinars, grand rounds, and other venues to enhance the didactic materials they already provide. The video can also be used to engage potential partners, including funders. Grant amount: $8,200 Research Consensus Conference on Children, Adolescents and the Media: Funds will host experts from the pediatric community as well as organizations and institutions known for their work in the media field, in early education, early brain development, and adolescent health. Grant amount: $61,500

Implementing Mental Health Priorities in Practice: Funding will support six, 7-minute training videos, with examples of patient/family encounters that encompass the most difficult conversation areas, will guide the physician in the practical skills needed to elicit accurate information and create behavior change in their patients. Grant amount: $50,000

CATCH Training Meeting: Funds will support a bi-annual training for the local leaders of the CATCH program. The goal of the training is to enhance the skills of CATCH

Identification and Management of Pediatric Hypertension: Funding will provide this EQUIPP course to improve the quality of care by educating general pediatricians and pediatric nephrologists and cardiologists on best practices in identifying and managing pediatric patients with high blood pressure (BP). Grant amount: $111,300 Mental Health Plain Language Materials: Funding will provide plain language materials to support parents and caregivers in caring for children and adolescents with symptoms of mental health concerns (anxiety, depression, inattention and impulsivity, disruptive behavior and aggression, substance use and abuse, social-emotional problems in children under 5, and learning difficulties). Materials will also be translated into Spanish. Grant amount: $25,222

Bright Futures Continuity Project: This project builds on the Bright Futures (BF) Continuity Clinic pilot implementation project held in 5 continuity clinics from 2010-2012. After a successful pilot study, Bright Futures is planning to join with QuINN, based on the PreSIP experience and test the clinical implementation of BF Implementation measures and tools for children ages 4 to 2. Funds support 5 continuity clinics. Grant amount: $30,916

EBCD Peds21 Symposium on Building Brains, Forging Futures: Funds will support a half-day Peds21 program that will bring together well known experts in the fields of brain and child development and epigenetics to discuss developmental science and how to translate that science into pediatric practice. Grant amount: $27,800

Resident International Elective Award: Funding will provide several $1,000 awards to categorical and combined-training pediatric residents, as well as fellowship trainees. Grant amount: $10,000

Mental Health Residency Curriculum Pilot Testing: Funding was previously provided in FY 2012-2013 for the development of a mental health residency curriculum. Funding

VIP Network Benchmarking Quality Measures for Community-Acquired Pneumonia in Children: Funding will support an expert group meeting aiming to improve care delivery for pediatric patients hospitalized with community-acquired pneumonia (CAP). Grant amount: $12,090

2013-2014 Media Visiting Professor: Funding will be used by the Council on Communications and Media (COCM) to invite hospitals and institutions (including chapters) to apply to host a pediatric media expert who spends 1-2 days in the selected institution's community conducting lectures, seminars, or "grand rounds" on the subject of media and its effect on children. Grant amount: $3,462

Resident/Young Physician Imitative: NCE Program Delegate Award: Funds will cover three programs: NCE Program Delegate Award, Advocacy Conference Scholarship, and Chapter Mentorship Grants. Each of these programs offers trainees and young physicians an opportunity to learn about the Academy in a face-to-face meeting (e.g. NCE, advocacy conference, or chapter mentor meeting). Grant amount: $50,000

Advancing Parent/Family Participation and Partnership with the AAP: Funding will be used by the Parent Advisory Group (PAG) to increase the number of parents/families available to address increasing requests and to clarify the place of the PAG within the AAP. Grant amount: $20,300

Healthy People 2010/2020 Grant Program for Chapters: Funds will provide chapters with financial support to develop and implement projects that will improve the health and welfare of children as related to the Healthy People 2010/2020 objectives. In the past, the focus was on obesity/physical fitness, and early brain and child development.

Grant amount: $106,000 Enhancing Clinical Skills around Early Brain and Child Development: Funds will be used to develop a curriculum for pediatricians using materials from the Canadian based Norlien Foundation in order to strengthen the knowledge base and enhance the clinical skills of pediatricians on early brain and child development. In addition, funds will be used to identify, categorize and package Norlien Foundation and Mind in the Making materials for pediatricians to share with families. Grant Amount: $25,000

DPAC Mental Health Recovery Issues: Children, Families, and Providers:

Funds will be used to conduct planning around how the AAP can best support children and their families and members (health care providers) to recover from a disaster. In addition, funds will be used to assess the need (and mechanism) to enhance pre-disaster preparedness and just-in-time training in pediatric disaster mental and behavioral health for pediatricians and others who care for children.

Grant Amount: $11,250 COPA: HIV/AIDS Training Course: Funds will be used to help the Committee on

Pediatric AIDS (COPA) to develop a training course, with residents and pediatric infectious disease fellows as the initial target audience, to comprehensively address all aspects of HIV management in infants, children, adolescents and young persons; and to present evidence-based data to optimize clinical practice.

Grant Amount: $29,910

Mental Health Training in Residence and Continuity Clinics (3 Phases): Phase 1 funding will be used to develop a curriculum for continuity clinic preceptors and a resident curriculum guide on applying the common factors approach to mental health concerns and the management and treatment of mild to moderate anxiety.

Grant Amount: $25,000 (year 1)

NCE Program Delegate Award: Funds will provide grants to send 166 residents to the AAP Annual Meeting. This program provides residents with non-traditional training in career development, community advocacy, legislative advocacy, international child health, subspecialty and academic opportunities, and leadership and networking skills.

Grant Amount: $50,000

Engagement of Resident and Young Physician Leaders: Funding includes funding for chapter outreach grants, legislative conference scholarships, and leadership training scholarships with the intention of increasing resident and young physician engagement. Grant Amount: $6,600 Mentorship Pilot Program: Funding will be used to pilot a mentorship program amongst SOYP/SOMSRFT and select districts, chapters, and residency programs. The program’s goal is to stimulate outreach from the chapters to engage medical students, residents and young physicians in child health advocacy, mentorship and leadership. Grant Amount: $20,000 PEDS Course (year 2): The course will conduct the Pediatric Education in Disasters (PEDs) as a train-the-trainer course in two countries in need. The program was introduced in four countries last year and was very well received. Grant amount: $33,810 per year for three years (Year 2) AAP International Tobacco Control Program: Funds will go towards the second year of a two year program. The program emphasizes training of health workers to raise

Task Force on Foster Care: The TFOFC is developing and implementing initiatives to improve the health and well-being of children and youth in foster care. New resources will be designed to facilitate change in the office, in the community, and at the system level. Grant amount: $104, 205 (5th year)

Health Disparities Resource Kit: Funds will be used to assist practicing pediatricians in strengthening skills and office practices to address determinants of child health disparities. New resources will assist pediatricians and their staff in providing culturally effective individualized care, understanding and monitoring the disparities that exist in their communities, addressing the root causes of those disparities, and creating a medical home environment that engenders culturally effective care to promote child health equity.

Grant amount: $36,800

Life Around Newborn Discharge (LAND) Study: Pediatric Research in Office Settings (PROS) initiated this project to investigate the decision-making process around newborn discharge and its relation to outcomes in the first 6 weeks of life with a pilot test in 17 pediatric practices over one year. Grant Amount: Up to $100,000. Head Injury Functional Outcome Project: Work on the head injury functional outcome measure began in 1993. The work group defined the scope of the condition it was addressing and drafted a preliminary measure. This grant provided funds to conduct parent focus groups and cognitive interviews to assess the utility of the draft measure with families of children who have experienced a brain injury. Grant Amount: Up to $30,000. International Pediatric Education Outreach: The Academy’s international activities allowed AAP leaders to participate in CME programs in developing nations, guide establishment of a continuing education program across the European Union, and influence the training of pediatricians and the care provided to children worldwide. The grant also supported an exchange of resident fellows and partial travel awards to bring pediatric leaders from selected nations to Academy functions. Grant Amount: Up to $30,000.

Corporal Punishment Conference Proceedings: A Pediatrics supplement was published that examined corporal punishment and other forms of discipline and provided "state of the art" statements for all professionals involved in the care of children and adolescents. Anti-Tobacco Day: On November 9, 1995, Academy pediatricians across the nation taught students about the dangers of tobacco use and the influence of advertising on children and adolescents. Child Health Month: Violence Prevention: This grant supported activities devoted to violence prevention with an emphasis on building interpersonal skills as the foundation for violence prevention. The measures assess patient and family function, and are critical for the collection of data necessary to prove treatment efficacy and to develop treatment parameters. Grant Amount: $46,000. Managed Care Brochures for Parents and Health Care Purchasers: These publications targeted two critical audiences with information necessary to understand and to effectively utilize health care provided through the managed care model. Grant Amount: $32,500. Resident Research Grant Program: The program fosters the development of research skills among physicians in training. Grant award of up to $2,000 were offered to sponsor resident initiated studies. Grant Amount: $15,000. Pediatrician Practice Pattern Surveys: The survey collected information on current pediatrician practice patterns with regard to managed care referrals for children with mental health problems and the management of febrile infants in office settings. Integrated Services Task Force: The Task Force studied school-linked health services and planned a multi-disciplinary conference that brought together national organizations involved in the issue. Grant Amount: $18,200.

Task Force on Minority Children's Access to Pediatric Care: Final Report: This grant funded the final report recommendations on improving the health of minority children. Grant Amount: $13,500. Pediatric Career Decision Making Study: The project examined the differences between how general practice and sub-specialty pediatric careers are selected and ultimately how to ensure an adequate supply of pediatricians to care for children. Grant Amount: $14,273. Physician Workforce Ratios Project: The project tracked child population and physician workforce distribution by county. Grant Amount: $3,113. Task Force on Adolescent Assault Victim Needs: The Task Force developed recommendations and a multi-disciplinary model protocol to address emergency care of adolescent assault victims with emphasis on follow-up and management of these youth. Grant Amount: $20,324.

DSM-PC Project: The DSM-PC developed a mental health classification system for use in primary care settings. Grant Amount: $38,677. Pediatric Reserch in Office Settings (PROS) Network: This grant supported the PROS Network of more than 300 pediatricians who participate in practice-based research studies, develop, test and implement projects on populations and conditions seen by general practice pediatricians.
