Historical Statement:

The Grant Monument Association (GMA) was established in 1885, just days after the death of

General Ulysses S. Grant, with the explicit goal of raising the funds necessary to create and

maintain a memorial befitting Grant’s legacy. Over the following twelve years, the GMA

solicited contributions and eventually constructed the edifice commonly known as Grant’s

Tomb, one of the country’s largest mausoleums, in New York City’s Riverside Park. Thereafter,

the GMA functioned as the entity that oversaw the daily operation of the tomb and promoted

the legacy of General Grant. In 1959, the GMA transferred the on-going care of the property

and mausoleum to the Department of the Interior, National Park Service. Over the next six

years, the GMA continued to serve in an advisory capacity. In 1965, the GMA was officially

dissolved.

Scope and Content Statement:

The records of the Grant Monument Association consist of administrative, financial, fund raising,

design competition, operational and attendance records. Materials include correspondence,

meeting minutes, annual reports, budgets, vouchers, invoices, bills, receipts, tax records,

subscription records, architectural descriptions and plans, blueprints, newspaper clippings,

publications and ephemera. While most material is loose, there are approximately a dozen

ledgers and letter books and hundreds of booklets of subscription records. The correspondents

consist of trustees, officers, architects, builders and artists, vendors, local, state and federal

authorities, contributors and patrons.

Processing Information:

This collection was originally processed at the National Park Service Northeast Museum Services

Center in June 2002. Processing was revised as part of the Manhattan Sites Archives Project in

2011 by Assistant Archivist Margaret Bausman, with the assistance of Project Archivist Tobi

PROVENANCE NOTE

The original finding aid produced in 2002 by the NPS Northeast Museum Services Center delineates the

following details concerning the provenance of the collection:

During the late 1970s, the curator of the General Grant National Memorial, David M. Kahn, discovered a

series of footlockers in a storage room on the crypt level of Grant’s Tomb. Therein he found GMA

records spanning a range of periods. Some, dating prior to 1897, had been sealed into copper boxes. It

was Kahn’s deduction that these records had been set aside by the Tomb’s architect John H. Duncan

following the completion of the Tomb as the onsite office was then closed. Thereafter and until the

1920s, GMA records creation and management occurred in the business office of the GMA secretary. In

1912, this system resulted in the loss of GMA records from 1897–1911 (possibly including John H.

Duncan’s original rendering of the Tomb) when the offices of GMA Secretary Henry W. Hayden located

in the Equitable Life Insurance Building were destroyed by fire. It appears that from the 1920s onward,

GMA records were created and managed both at the tomb and in the business office of the GMA

secretary, and that from time to time off-site records were brought to the tomb for storage. Kahn

surveyed, inventoried and arranged1 the records. They were transferred to the Federal Hall National

Memorial.

At one time there was a collection of Grant Monument Association records in the care of the Chamber

of Commerce and Industry when it was located at 65 Liberty Street, New York, NY, where the GMA had

offices apparently during the late 1920s through the early 1930s. The 2002 finding aid notes that these

records consisted of:

three alphabetized letter boxes of correspondence dating from January 1, 1928 through 1933;

a box of invoices and receipts dating from January 1, 1928 through 1933;

a vertical file that contains, among other things, letters to and from John Russell Pope;

galley and photographic work for the 1929 Handbook of the Grant Monument Association.

Efforts to transfer these records from the Chamber of Commerce and Industry to National Park Service

foundered. The Chamber of Commerce and Industry merged with the New York City Partnership to

form the Partnership for New York City. Attempts in 2010-2011 to locate the GMA Records previously in

the Chamber’s custody were unsuccessful.

The current collection consists of those records found by Kahn and those which the GMA turned over to

the National Park Service at the time of its dissolution. These records were temporarily transferred to

the Northeast Museum Services Center in Charlestown, Massachusetts in August of 2001 for processing.

A small portion of these records was separated entirely and now comprise the Grant Family Papers,

1881-1892 and the Chester A. Arthur Statue Committee Records, 1887-1888.

Upon completion of processing, the collection was returned to the custody of the National Park Service

Manhattan Sites at Federal Hall, and was subsequently moved, as part of the Manhattan Sites Archives

Project, to Fort Wadsworth, Gateway National Recreation Area, Staten Island, New York.

HISTORICAL NOTE

General Ulysses S. Grant died of throat cancer on July 23, 1885 in Mount McGregor, New York, just two

months after completing work on his memoirs.2 He was perhaps the most popular person in America at

the time of his death. Grant was not only a warrior but also a promoter of civil rights; not only the

strategist who vanquished the Confederacy, but also the U. S. President who supported equal rights for

formerly enslaved people. On August 8, 1885, Grant’s funeral procession wove through New York City

streets lined with one million mourners. The official procession of 60,000 marchers who accompanied

his casket to Riverside Park included Grant’s family, closest friends and colleagues. His casket was laid to

rest in a temporary tomb by former officers of both the Union and the Confederate Armies.

Grant’s declining years and death coincided with the advent of The Gilded Age. Spanning the years of

1880 to 1900, this time was one in which technological advances such as the mass adaptation of

electricity, the refinement of steel and the development of the internal combustion engine ushered in a

period of unparalleled industrial growth and concentration of wealth. It was in this milieu that the

Grant Monument Association (GMA) was conceived and was at its most active.

The swift mobilization of the GMA following Grant’s death would suggest that its inception had already

been considered. Grant had left no specific directive as to the location of his final resting place although

the family owned funeral plots in St. Louis, Missouri and Galena, Illinois. He had tacitly assented to a

memorial provided the design would accommodate his wife’s final resting place along with his.

Ultimately, it was Julia Grant herself who made the final decision that her husband’s remains would be

interred in New York City as she intended to continue to reside in the city which the Grant family had

adopted as their home. Mrs. Grant thus accepted Mayor William R. Grace’s offer to provide a fitting

location,3 a decision she later clarified in writing when the GMA came under criticism suggesting that it

had usurped the privilege of providing the General his final resting place without due consideration that

other locales, such as Arlington National Cemetery and the Old Soldier’s Home in Washington, D.C.,

might more appropriately claim the honor.

The GMA convened its first meeting on July 28, 1885 at the invitation of Mayor Grace, just five days

following the death of General Grant and ten days before his funeral. Those in attendance comprised a

virtual Who’s Who of The Gilded Age. The business, political, social and cultural elites of New York City

were well-represented and included John Jacob Astor IV, Gen. George B. McClellan, Charles Steinway,

William Steinway, Cornelius Vanderbilt, Joseph Pulitzer, George Tompkins and Lispenard Stewart. Those

attendees appointed officers including former U.S. President Chester A. Arthur as Chairman.4 Cornelius

O’Reilly (1834-1903), a prominent architect and builder, served as the Chairman of the Building

Committee. Other officers were Hamilton Fish and Mayor Grace as Vice-Chairmen, J. Pierpont Morgan

as Treasurer and Richard T. Greener as Secretary. Greener, born in 1844, was one of the most

prominent African-Americans of this period and served as the first GMA secretary from 1885-1892. The

first black graduate of Harvard University, Greener was a lawyer and an educator whose career in

academia included holding the positions of Professor at the University of South Carolina and Dean of

Howard University Law School. In later life, Greener served as United States Consul in India and Russia.

Greener died in Chicago in 1922, just days after the centenary celebration of General Grant which

Greener had planned to attend but was unable to due to illness.

General Horace Porter (1837-1921) served as president of the organization. Porter was a Civil War hero

who received the Medal of Honor; he served with Grant during the war and later as President Grant’s

personal White House secretary. Porter published an account of his war experiences entitled

Campaigning with Grant.5 In later years, Porter was the Ambassador to France and President of the

Union Club. As President of the Grant Monument Association, Porter was instrumental in the

fundraising for and the construction of the tomb through the financially turbulent 1890s.

During the GMA’s first meeting, it was determined that the GMA would endeavor “to build a National

Monument in the City of New York worthy of the illustrious dead soldier and patriot…” Toward this end,

at the urging of Alonzo B. Cornell, former governor of New York State, the GMA pledged itself to raise

the sum of one million dollars. Thus several intertwined tasks dominated the first dozen years of GMA

functioning: fund raising, selection of the tomb’s design and implementation of the construction.

Even before the official formation of the GMA, collection for the Monument had begun. While

fundraising proved to be a perpetual function of the GMA, this activity is punctuated by major

fundraising raising drives in 1885, 1892 and 1929. One of the explicit goals of the GMA was to raise the

needed funds through donation by the citizens of New York. Critics made note that the leadership of

the GMA consisted of some of the leading industrialists who were amassing enormous personal

fortunes. Several or even one alone could have easily met the fundraising goals of the GMA from their

own pockets.

Nevertheless, despite economic disparity, during 1885 and again in 1892, citizens of every economic

echelon subscribed to the GMA. Special efforts were made to solicit donations from African American

fraternal and religious groups by Secretary Greener. Newspapers actively recruited subscriptions.

Private businesses and governmental agencies promoted subscription from among their employees,

creating pledge lists and collecting the pledges. Workers, for whom a dollar or .50 cents subscription

might indeed mean sacrifice, proudly donated. Individuals solicited pledges from neighbors and

colleagues. Veteran’s groups, townships, churches and schools collected donations. Ultimately, the

Grant Monument cost $600,000, nearly 95% percent of which was raised through donations from the

people of New York. Some contributed pennies, others much more. But citizens from every walk of life

seem to comprise the 90,000 subscribers of the GMA – a detail which speaks to the deep esteem with

which General Grant was regarded.

The design of the tomb was a compelling consideration for some citizens who offered ideas for the

monument design entirely unsolicited long before the GMA initiated an official competition. In 1888,

the GMA instituted an open, competitive design submission process based upon a model previously

used in the creation of many Civil War monuments. The parameters of the GMA process contained

some controversial deviations from the norm, however, and a six-member panel of expert judges

resolved that this had served to deter true professionals from participating. They reluctantly chose five

winning designs from 65 submissions they deemed in aggregate to be below par.

The GMA board in turn found the judges choices lacking and thus instituted a second competition in

1890. Rather than remediating the controversial elements of the first competition, the second was by

invitation, extending a $500 stipend to five of the most prominent architects at the time including

Carrere and Hastings, Charles W. Clinton, LeBrun and Sons and John Ord. The winning submission this

time was chosen not by experts but by the Board itself who bestowed the honor on a composite neo-

classical design by John H. Duncan.

Through the years of construction, the GMA, John H. Duncan and builder John T. Brady labored over the

details - granite from Maine, marble from Massachusetts and Italy, stained glass windows from Tiffany &

Co. and sculptures by J. Massy Rhind. Even at the time of its 1897 dedication ceremony, the GMA did

not consider the tomb complete as it lacked external statuary. This cause was taken up by the 1929

fundraising campaign which sought to raise $400,000 to complete the tomb under the auspices of John

Russell Pope. However, the impact of the Great Depression delayed completion again. Thus, technically

speaking, Grant’s Tomb remains unfinished today.

The on-going work of the GMA, from 1897 to 1959, was to support the daily functioning of Grant’s Tomb

as an educational and patriotic destination, to work collaboratively with city, state and federal agencies

to maintain the property and building, and to promote General Grant’s legacy. Toward this end, the

GMA maintained an active Board of Trustees.

George D. Burnside served as custodian of Grant’s Tomb for 33 years, his role being filled upon

retirement by his son, George G. Burnside who had hitherto worked at his father’s side. While Mr.

Burnside provided daily care of the tomb overseeing its maintenance and repair, he also served as tour

guide and coordinator of visitation. He created informational material including a 1928 booklet entitled

Life of Gen. U. S. Grant: Description of Tomb. He kept meticulous track of daily attendance and weather

in a series of ledgers from which monthly and yearly attendance statistics were drawn.

On its perch high above the Hudson River, for over two decades Grant’s Tomb welcomed around half a

million visitors a year, exceeding visitation to The Statue of Liberty until after World War I. Through the

20th century, the GMA promoted Grant-related events, especially yearly celebrations of his birth, at the

tomb and elsewhere. The GMA worked collaboratively with the Works Progress Administration in the

installation of busts of several of Grant’s Civil War generals in 1938 and the commissioning of murals

representing maps locating battles of the Civil War by Dean Faucett. In 1959, the care of the tomb and

property was transferred to the Department of the Interior, National Park Service. Remaining intact for

another six years in an advisory capacity, the GMA’s last official act before legally dissolving, was the

oversight of the installation of mosaic murals by Allyn Cox in 1965. A new Grant Monument Association

was created some years later; the records of that organization are not part of this collection.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The records of the Grant Monument Association consist of administrative, financial, fund raising, design

competition, operational and attendance records. Materials include correspondence, meeting minutes,

annual reports, budgets, vouchers, invoices, bills, receipts, tax records, subscription records,

architectural descriptions and plans, blueprints, newspaper clippings, publications and ephemera. While

most material is loose, there are a dozen or so bound ledgers and letter books. The correspondents

consist of trustees, officers, architects, builders and artists, vendors, local, state and federal authorities,

contributors and patrons. In aggregate, these materials not only narrate the evolution of the Grant

Monument Association but also serve to illuminate the personal commitment of the membership, many

of whom were men of considerable prominence, including Presidents Chester A. Arthur, Rutherford B.

Hayes and Benjamin Harrison; business and civic leaders such as Andrew Carnegie, Hamilton Fish,

William R. Grace, John D. Rockefeller, Jacob H. Schiff, Leland Stanford, and Cornelius Vanderbilt; and

notable architects and firms such as Charles W. Clinton, John H. Duncan, John Ord, Calvert Vaux, and

Carrere and Hastings.

Approximately two-thirds of the collection consists of records pertaining to the establishment and

administration of the GMA and its attempts to raise money for the construction of the tomb. The

records shed light on a variety of fund-raising methods, including persuasion of personal connections,

newspaper appeals, industry- and trade- based initiatives, appeals to veterans, solicitation of

government funding, strategically placed collection boxes, and benefits ranging from operas and other

performances to industrial expositions to baseball games.

The remainder of the collection comprises records pertaining to the design and construction of the tomb

and its maintenance and management. Included are sketches and textual descriptions of proposals for

the tomb’s design, submitted during the two design competitions (1888 and 1890), as well as

documents relating to the groundbreaking and dedication ceremonies. The records also contain files on

the administration of the site, including general financial records, inquiries and responses from visitors,

files on public services and programs, and memoranda on measures taken to protect the tomb during

World War II.

Booklets, pamphlets and printed ephemera in the collection, including programs of dedication

ceremonies, do more than document their respective specific events. They are also chronicles of social

history, illuminating practices of mourning and commemoration. Additionally, many contain

advertisements, often illustrated, that reveal details about everyday life and commerce in 19th century

New York.

ARRANGEMENT NOTE

The current arrangement of the Grant Monument Association Records replicates the core intellectual

arrangement established during the 2002 processing project, with several adjustments to provide a

more cohesive narrative and streamlined research access, while maintaining original order and the

integrity of the collection. For details concerning the prior arrangement, please see the 2002 Finding Aid

for Grant Monument Association Records, 1885-1966 prepared by Mary P. Perreault, Melissa Underhill

and Elizabeth Banks, available through the office of the Chief of Cultural Resources for the General Grant

National Memorial. A crosswalk between the 2002 and 2011 arrangement is available for researchers if

needed.

The most significant adjustment is the elimination of Series III: Oversized Materials. In the 2002

arrangement, Series III contained all items found in the collection which were larger, and in some cases

smaller, than the standard legal size document box. While removal of each item to one of 23

appropriately sized archival boxes was noted with a separation sheet, the 2002 finding aid utilized an

elaborate footnoting system which essentially severed the other-sized items from their intellectual

connection to their original location.

The re-integration of other-sized materials is reflected in two ways. Of the 23 boxes in Series III, 12 were

index card boxes containing the subscription books from the 1892 fund raising drive. These materials

have been reassigned to Series I: Subseries G: Fundraising, Sub-subseries 3: Subscription Books. The box

numbers have been adjusted accordingly. The 11 boxes which contain the remaining other-sized

materials are physically arranged as the last 11 boxes in the collection. The items therein are listed in

the finding aid according at their physical location of origin and intellectual relationship. Series I:

Subseries G: Fundraising has been arranged into 7 sub-subseries: 1. Correspondence; 2. Events,

Campaigns and Fundraisers; 3. Subscription Books; 4. Indexes of Contributors; 5. Contribution Boxes;

and 6. Grand Army of the Republic (GAR).

The arrangement of the General Correspondence in Series II, Subseries D: Tomb Opening and

Operational Records reflects a significant re-processing from the 2002 arrangement as it has been

sorted by year and month in order to provide a more cohesive narrative. Throughout the collection,

some folder order has been adjusted for flow of content and chronology.

Subseries D: Annual Reports, 1885-1896 Extent: 2.5 linear inches Arrangement: The term “Parts” is used to indicate groups of closely related material which were likely originally filed together as a unit but are now sub-divided into multiple folders for preservation purposes. Scope and Content: Subseries consist of dated and undated accounting reports and lists detailing the income and the expenses of Grant Monument Association from 1885-1896. Itemized lists contain the names of individuals both famous and obscure and the amounts they contributed (e.g. John Jacob Astor, $1,000; C. Smith, $2.00; Little Ettie, Lottie & Fannie, 30¢; A Soldier’s Orphan, 5¢; Daughter of a Confederate General, 25¢; A poor woman with ten children, 5¢.) They also reveal the comparative fund-raising capabilities of various members of the Association (e.g. “Aug. 14 *1885+ Through B*enjamin+ Lichtenstein . . .$230.00”). Subseries E: Meeting Minutes, 1885-1965 Extent: 7 linear inches Arrangement: Chronological Scope and Content: Subseries consists of four ledgers spanning the years 1885 through 1965. There is a gap from 1887-1911 which may be accounted for by the 1912 fire at the Equitable Life Insurance Building which destroyed many GMA records. Each ledger contains the official “transcript of record” of GMA meetings. The overall content offers insight as to the inception and formation of the GMA, its on-going mission and goals, and its efforts to engage participants representing a broad swath of the community. The first ledger, 1885-1886, is written in the hand of the GMA’s first Secretary, Richard T. Greener. This ledger lists the 85 men who attended the inaugural GMA meeting, July 28, 1885. The final ledger

Subseries F: Financial Records, 1885-1965 Extent: 2.33 linear feet Arrangement: Boxes 4 through 8 of this subseries contain materials which are arranged by record type and then chronologically within the folders. However, the folders in Box 9 entitled “Vouchers, Invoices, Bills and Receipts” each contain an array of documents. Those folders cover overlapping dates and their contents are not arranged chronologically. Some folders contain materials grouped by company and sometimes arranged alphabetically. This arrangement has been retained in order not to disrupt any remnants of the original order of the material. Scope and Content: Subseries contains the documents related to the day-to-day financial affairs of the GMA. It contains balance sheets, bank books, check stubs, petty cash ledgers, receipt stubs, canceled checks, vouchers, invoices, bills and receipts. Box Folder Title Dates

Subseries G: Fundraising, 1885-1894 Arrangement: This subseries is arranged into six sub-subseries: 1: Correspondence; 2: Events, Campaigns and Fundraisers; 3: Subscription Books; 4: Indexes of Contributors; 5: Contribution Boxes; and 6: Grand Army of the Republic (GAR). In the 1980s, several volumes were removed by National Park Service personnel from their respective sequences in Sub-subseries 1 and 3 for unknown purposes, probably exhibition or loan. For registrarial control, these volumes were given individual catalog numbers, which are listed under “Related Materials” in the appropriate sub-subseries description. Sub-subseries 1: Correspondence, 1885-1893

Extent: 3.95 linear feet Arrangement: There are two arrangement schemes within this sub-subseries. The first half is arranged largely by chronology. There is some date overlap among folders in order to preserve presumed original order in which closely associate items were housed together. The items in Box 11 Folder 4 through Box 12 Folder 4 each cover a range of overlapping dates spanning July through December 1885. The contents of these folders were found folded tightly together in a series of six envelopes and one loose bundle. These items were humidified and flattened so that they could be used by researchers. The second half of the sub-subseries maintains an organization in which correspondence was filed by the GMA in a numbered letter file system according to type of company making a contribution. Missing are letter files 1-26, 35, 50, 95, 177. Some folders in this section are empty (and marked as such) to reflect that a letter file was prepared by the GMA but upon initial archival processing was found to be empty. Preservation photocopies of the index sheets that were glued to the fronts of the original letter files are in Box 16, Folder 7. Scope and Content: Sub-subseries includes a range of communications pertaining to the pledge of a donation to the GMA and/or to the completed submission of a donation. This includes letters, pledge sheets and lists, some of which are marked with a number in blue pencil although the use and meaning

of this notation is not known. There are also drafts and final versions of GMA’s print solicitation for donations, including appeals to Americans overseas, as well as occasional drafts of public addresses appealing for contributions. There are copies of letters from the GMA to subscribers requesting remittance of a pledge. There are requests from subscribers to the GMA for souvenir certificates acknowledging a donation. There are some hand-written notes and memoranda by unidentified creator(s). Many documents are pasted to transmission sheets, some of which are signed (sometime by hand, sometimes by rubber stamp) by former President Chester A. Arthur as Chairman of the GMA. Among the correspondence are letters from individuals proposing a variety of fund-raising schemes, such as the sale of books of reminiscences by Civil War soldiers, oratory contests, and the marketing of products bearing the Grant name. Scope and Content: Sub-subseries consists of material that was used in two fundraising drives and which document the GMA’s efforts to formally distribute and collect fund raising materials designed for this purpose. The 1885-1887 materials consist primarily of official GMA pledge sheets. There are logs containing distribution receipts and remittance requests. The bulk of the sub-subseries consists of materials from the 1892 subscription drive in which the GMA provided 6 ½ x 4 ¼ inch booklets to individuals who recorded donations solicited from friends, neighbors, family members, co-workers and colleagues. The record suggests that the GMA distributed approximately 5000 such books (numbered 1-1500 and 5000-8500). Of these, the collection contains 949 completed subscription books. The disposition of the missing subscription books is unknown; presumably they were not returned to the GMA. Also of note is a log marked Estimates of Subscriptions which corresponds in part with the numbered letter files of correspondence from Sub-subseries 1: Correspondence. Related Materials:

Subseries H: Newspaper Clippings, 1889-1939 Extent: 8 linear inches Arrangement: Chronological. Scope and Content: Subseries consists primarily of newspaper clippings provided to the GMA by Henry Romeike’s Press Cuttings during the year 1892 – a year in which there was a tremendous fund-raising drive. Utilizing a letterhead that expanded upon a line from Robert Burns’ poem “To a Louse”: “O wad some power the giftie gi’s us / To see oursel’s as ithers see us – This Power Now Exists”, Romeike’s Press Cuttings was a prominent information resource of its day. A consumer employed Romeike’s to cull from a range of sources the press coverage related to its enterprise and to provide the consumer with the original clippings. One of the most central functions of the GMA at this time was to maintain a high public profile in order to entice financial, social and political support. Thus tracking the press coverage of its activities may have been an important way in which the GMA endeavored not only to document its activities but also to maintain a sense of its public interface. Subseries C: Construction Records, 1885-1897 Extent: 10 linear inches Arrangement: Topical; chronological within topic. There is some overlap in dates from folder to folder, preserving the order in which the material was found. Scope and Content: This subseries comprises those documents related to the construction of Grant’s Tomb. Most of the materials are in the form of correspondence, but there are also some reports, contracts and financial materials such as a cost comparison between various marble vendors. Much of the correspondence is from architect John H. Duncan and there is fair amount directed to Cornelius O’Reilly and Richard T. Greener. Of note may be correspondence regarding the transfer of Gen. Grant’s casket from the temporary tomb to permanent placement in the Grant Monument. Box Folder Title Dates

Subseries D: Tomb Opening and Operational Records, 1885-1979 Extent: 3.95 feet Arrangement: Topical and chronological. One item was removed from its sequence in this subseries by National Park Service personnel in 1988 and given a separate catalog number; it is listed under “Related Materials.” Scope and Content: The materials in this subseries include a broad range of formats and content covering nearly 100 years. While much of the material is correspondence (letters and post cards), there are also copies of minutes, reports and policies related to the management and operations of Grant’s Tomb. There is a significant gap between the years 1897-1911, possibly due to the loss of GMA records in the Equitable Life Insurance Building fire of 1912. The General Correspondence of this series spans nearly 60 years and consists largely of letters between GMA employees and officers regarding GMA meetings, scheduling, attendance and minutes, maintenance issues, insurance issues (including policies), employee management, salary issues and daily operations of the Tomb. There are also annual reports and meeting minutes which can include financial information. Materials related to the 1897 Opening Ceremonies of the Tomb include correspondence addressed to Mayor William L. Strong regarding appointments to the Dedication Ceremony planning committee. Some noteworthy items include: a 1925 letter from Horace Hotchkiss to Col. Thomas Denny in which Hotchkiss mentions early influences of Tammany Hall upon GMA functioning and his personal

preference for the 1890 monument submission by Carrere and Hastings; a 1941 monogram printed with dye that had been used by General Grant; the text of a 1943 International News Service radio address in which Major Paul C. Raborg highlights the enduring patriotic symbolism of Grant’s Tomb; and a 1944 letter from Herbert Satterlee to Mr. Burnside regarding a 1892 letter in his possession from Mrs. Grant to the GMA discussing the design of her eventual resting place in the tomb (there is a copy of the original and a typed transcript of the text). A prominent correspondent through the 1940s and 1950s was Mary B. Greener. It appears likely that she was employed by the secretary of the GMA (rather than the GMA directly) as she managed much of the day-to-day administrative needs of the GMA. It is unknown if she was related to Richard T. Greener. Patron correspondence is a group of letters from visitors to and those with an informational interest in Grant’s Tomb. This includes several inquiries from Albert Mitchell whose WOR radio program, “The Answer Man,” responded to questions of public interest sent in by listeners. There are requests for printed materials and tours. There are letters which reflect upon the experience of visiting Grant’s Tomb, express a connection to the Grant family, or offer memorabilia. Among the noteworthy items of correspondence are a letter which inquires about covert Masonic symbolism in Duncan’s architecture, one which is postmarked 1947 but is dated and written as if from 1876 and asks General Grant for a loan of $5, and one in which the writer realizes she has been misinformed that Napoleon and Josephine are buried in Grant’s Tomb but does wonders what its actual purpose might be. This subseries contains folders with materials specific to correspondent, project and function including the fundraising campaign of 1929. There is a folder of correspondence dealing with security concerns at the tomb during World War II which includes a discourse which led to the removal of panels embroidered by the artist K. Shiwomasu that had been given as a tribute to General Grant by the Japanese government. There is a folder of material pertaining to the transfer of the care of the tomb from the Grant Monument Association to the National Park Service in 1959. Related Materials:

Subseries E: Financial Records, 1911-1965 Extent: 3.54 linear feet Arrangement: The term “Parts” is used to indicate groups of closely related materials which were likely originally filed together as a unit but sub-divided into multiple folders during processing in order to provide the materials with archival housing. This subseries contains material entitled “Vouchers, Invoices, Bills and Receipts” which includes an array of documents. The contents of folders cover overlapping dates and are not arranged chronologically. Some folders contain materials grouped by company. It may be that the original order of these materials was lost and this arrangement reflects the state in which the 2002 processing encountered them. This arrangement has been left in place in order not to further disrupt any remnants of the original order of the material. Scope and Content: Subseries contains documents pertaining to the financial aspects of operating Grant’s Tomb. There are city, state and federal tax records, vouchers, bills, invoices, receipts, and yearly financial statements for the State of New York. There is related correspondence, some duplicate attendance records and budget sheets. There is also material regarding a case in which an employee claimed a workplace injury in 1935 and there was a subsequent legal dispute regarding compensation to cover his medical and rehabilitative expenses. Subseries F: Attendance Records, 1898-1966 Extent: 9 linear inches Arrangement: By type and chronology. Scope and Content: Subseries consists primarily of two sets of bound ledgers. The first set is the Official Record of daily visits to the Tomb. There is also a set of loose monthly sheets covering the years 1911-1917 and 1919 identical to those in the bound ledger except that they contain annotation in the top left corner which provides attendance data for the same month in prior years.
