Estimated classroomlife (in years): at least 10 years

Detailed description of final outcome (attach additional pages as needed):Last year, I taught 3rd grade and the former teacher in my room was gracious enough to leaveseveral class sets of books for me to use. However, now that I am a second grade teacher, thereading levels of these books are too high for most of my students to comprehend. Because ofthis, I am requesting money to purchase class sets of grade level appropriate chapter books andnonfiction books. These books will be used primarily during the last two months of school afterwe finish the stories in our guided reading curriculum. In reading chapter books as a largegroup, it is my hope and my goal that students who are still struggling with chapter books willgain the skills and confidence to start reading them independently. It is also my goal thatstudents who are already reading chapter books will be challenged by the higher-level questionsand follow-up activities I will create for them. By creating differentiated activities for thesechapter books, each student will be challenged in a way that is appropriate for his or her readinglevel. My goal for the nonfiction books is that my students will feel more equipped to read, comprehend, and apply informational text. With the higher emphasis on nonfiction reading andwriting in the new Common Core Standards, I feel students need to be exposed to and beginlearning comprehension skills for nonfiction text early on. After reading these books, I plan tohave my students do writing and technology activities to push them to think more deeply aboutand to apply the information they read. These chapter book and nonfiction book comprehensionand application skills will help set my students up for success throughout their schooling.

Describe the educational objective:Students will be abl~,to better read and understand grade level appropriate chapter books andnonfiction books by learning and applying reading comprehension skills and performingdifferentiated follow-up activities.

Has a project like this been used in OPS before: Yes_X_ NoIf "Yes" please explain.Others have been granted money in the past for the purpose of purchasing grade levelappropriate reading materials.

Page 3: Grants 26-47

At times funding may become available from other sources. Could this project beenhanced with more funding: Yes _X_ No __If "yes" please explain:If more funding were to become available, this project could be enhanced with the purchase ofadditional nonfiction books to add to my classroom 'library. In doing this, students who finishtheir library books would have a greater selection of nonfiction books to choose from. This willprovide more opportunities for students to practice the nonfiction reading skills they haveacquired.

I attest that funding of this item is outside the scope of the building budget at this time. Ifin subsequent years operating supplies are required, I understand that they will be fundedthrough the budgeting process and further grants for such operating supplies will bedenied.

Detailed description of final outcome (attach additional pages as needed)

iPads will provide a means to deliver instruction, engage students in lessons, and provide follow-up practice. The final outcome would be an increase in the students' mastery of skills in all areas ofeducation. They make differentiated instruction easier with the vast number of applications available toteachers.

Currently, there are only 10 iPads available to the entire school. With 12 additional iPadsavailable to Kindergarten and First Grades classrooms, the teachers will be able to use them morefrequently to support learning for every student. When each child has an iPad, teachers will be able totailor instruction to individual skill development needs.

Kindergarten and first grade students will enjoy manipulating current technology whilecontinuing their education. They will be excited to play the educational iPad games, which are funand interactive. This will serve as a reinforcement tool for the classroom lessons. Because there areapplications for all content areas, iPad uses are endless.

iPad Stylus pens can be used for writing, handwriting, art, assignments, and applications withsmall touch areas. They are developmentally appropriate for building the fine motor skills needed forwritten work. By using a stylus pen with the iPad, students will be working on multiple skills at once.

Describe the educational objective:

The educational objective is to allow more children the opportunity to use technology in theclassroom to enhance the curriculum. iPads are also a very cost effective way to help prepare students forthe technology based future of learning.

Lower elementary students find ipads easier to navigate than laptops or desktop computers. Theapplications are preloaded and at their fingertips. Students will not have to rely on a teacher's help after

Page 14: Grants 26-47

being trained. Since iPads are a mobile device, they also will allow students to work in small groups orindividually throughout the classroom.

Activities on the iPad offer immediate feedback, so students learn from mistakes and can reframeideas. Many applications that are available offer cross-curricular lessons that will save time reviewingand teaching new material. iPads are a paperless way for students to apply existing knowledge andgenerate new ideas or processes.

iPads are versatile tools which will allow us to provide an expansion of resources in all areas oflearning without the typical cost. There are thousands offree game-like applications that excite studentsto practice and learn grade specific material. Virtual field trips can also be used to "take down theclassroom walls" and allow student enrichment through interactive maps and exhibit-specific content. Our students will become more aware of the world around them.

Has a project like this been used in OPS before: Yes~ No __If "Yes" please explain.

There are presently ten iPads available for use at Washington Street Elementary. Teachers checkout the iPads daily for students to use in their classrooms.

Currently, due to the number of available iPads, teachers use the iPads for small group instructionand/or partner work. Students in kindergarten through fifth grade utilize a variety of applications to learnnew concepts, review, and expand their knowledge. Applications include math drill games, phonic skillbuilders, and many cross-curricular lessons.

At times funding may become available from other sources. Could this project be enhanced withmore funding: Yes ~ No_If "yes" please explain:

Additional funding would help purchase iPad applications that are not "free" programs. Newlycreated technology and learning applications tend to be expensive. Providing monies to purchaseinnovative apps will help enhance, created, and sustain engaging learning experiences for students andteachers.

I attest that funding of this item is outside the scope of the building budget at this time. If insubsequent )fears operating supplies are required, I understand that they will be funded throughtbe bUdgezg pr~cess a . furtber grants for sucb operating supplies will be denied.

Otsego Middle School media center is a very busy place but lacks a comfortable, relaxed and inviting space to sit and read, visit with friends, or enjoy a game ofcheckers or chess. Students would welcome the chance to enjoy an area like this.

Having an area like this would attract more students to take advantage of the manyopportunities we have to offer. Dix Street, Washington Street and the high schoolhave such areas and Iwould like to provide this for the middle school students also.

To this end Iwould like the Excellence in Education Grant to purchase the following:

Detailed Description of Final outcome:

Otsego Middle School media center is a very busy place but lacks a comfortable, relaxed and inviting space to sit and read, visit with friends, or enjoy a game ofcheckers or chess. Students would welcome the chance to enjoy an area like this.

Having an area like this would attract more students to take advantage of the manyopportunities we have to offer. DixStreet, Washington Street and the high schoolhave such areas and I would like to provide this for the middle school students also.

To this end I would like the Excellence in Education Grant to purchase the following:

From All Modern.com (see attached) (also sold by Demeo but more expensive)-2 Fatboy Avenue Second Block in lime green @ $169.00 each = $3382 Fatboy Avenue Second Block in black @ $269 each = $5382 Fatboy Avenue First Block in lime green @ $149 = $2982 Fatboy Avenue First Block in black @ $249 = $498

From Demeo (see attached)-1 P122-1493 Area Rug in navy, 10'9" x 7'8" @ $405 (with MLAdiscount)1 P809195 OffiSide Table in black @ $57.60 (with MLAdiscount)

From Meijers (see attached)-1 #JH100737 Walnut Wood Chess Set @ $24

Describe the educational objective:

The educational objective is to encourage reading and educational games, such ascheckers and chess by providing a relaxed and inviting area to attract students.

Has a project like this been used in OPS before: Yes,as mentioned above Dix Street,Washington Street and the high school have relaxed seating areas.

At times funding may become available from other sources. Could this project beenhanced with more funding: Yes, additional funding could provide additional"brainy" games and artificial plants to further build a welcoming atmosphere in themedia center.

LEVELING THE PLAYING FIELD@OHS

Detailed description of final outcome:Approximately 15% of the students at the high school do not have access tocomputers at home on which to do homework or complete projects begun at school.I would like to level the playing field by having 4 iPads that would be available forcheck out overnight. I want iPads because they have the flexibility to be computerword processors, Internet explorers (if student has access to a wireless hotspot),camera and camcorder all in one device. Many of the projects that students do aspart of the curriculum require one or all of these tools. Recognizing that these samestudents who do not have computers at home, also do not have Internet connectivityat home, the following are some apps that do not need to be connected to enablestudents to complete work:

o Notes- taking noteso Keynote (PowerPoint)- creating a multimedia presentationo Numbers (Excel)- creating spreadsheetso Pages (Word)- typing a papero Penultimate- creating a sketch, taking noteso Vimeo- editing video taken with the iPado iBrainstorm- organizing thoughts and ideas for a project

If the student is able to get to a hotspot, there are even more apps that wouldenhance their ability to complete schoolwork.

The media center would need the grant to cover the following:

4 iPad2 @ $399 each = $1596

Describe the educational objective:The educational objective is to provide a device that would give students without acomputerized device at home the opportunity to borrow one from the media centerovernight to conveniently complete schoolwork.

Has a project like this been used in OPSbefore: No

Could this project be enhanced with more funding: Yes. If more funding wasavailable, I would like to also purchase Zagg Mates for each iPad that would providea very sturdy cover and keyboard.

Detailed description of final outcome:

I am applying for an Excellence in Education Grant for cameras to use atWashington Street Elementary. The cameras would be kept in the office forthe teachers to sign out when needed. Currently we have over forty staffmembers that put these cameras to use. We have 423 students attendingWashington Street Elementary. Our staff have taken pictures fornewsletters, yearbooks, family fun nights, student fun nights, authors, naturecenter programs, field trips, mileage club, and student council. I would liketo purchase four new Canon Power Shot ELPH 100 cameras withrechargeable battery packs and two Flip Ultra HD video cameras. We usethe flip camera to record morning announcements on the x drive which allclassrooms watch in the morning.

Describe the educational objective:

Staff members at Washington Street Elementary could continue to takepictures for newsletters, field trips, student council, and digital projects.

Has a project like this been used in OPS before:

Yes, currently we are using cameras that are six years old. The cameras takeregular batteries so we go through a number of batteries a year. The camerabuttons don't work well and pictures come out blurry. Several of our flipcamera buttons stick making it difficult to turn on and off.

At times funding may become available from other sources. Could thisproject be enhanced with more funding?

Yes, we can always use new updated cameras for each grade level.

To Whom It May Concern:

This is a request to be considered for the Otsego Public SchoolsFoundation Excellence in Education Grant. The OMS ELA department isrequesting $1000.00 to replace well-loved Book Club books, to purchase newtitles to be used in Book Club, to purchase book barcodes, and to purchase bookrepair materials. As you may have noticed, we have asked for funds for bookclub in previous years. The funds we are asking for will be used to maintain ourcurrent selections and expand to have enough book titles that all middle schoolstudents may participate.

Book Club is a program that all OMS students will participate in for the2012-2013 school year. Each child selects a new novel to read every three tofour weeks. Currently, all 6thgrade students as well as 90% of all ih and s"grade students participate in the book club program. By the end of 6thgrade, astudent will have read at least S novels, and by the end of Sthgrade, a studentwill have read at least 12 novels through the Book Club program. Book Club is aversion of a Literature Circle, and it supports several of our benchmarks set forthby the State of Michigan. (S.OS.06.01, S.OS.07.01, S.OS.OS.01, RWS.06.06,RWS.07.06, RWS.OS.06, RAT06.01, RAT07.01, RATOS.01, RMT06.01,R.MT07.01, R.MTOS.01)

Early theories about reading instruction were built on the premise thatreading was simply a process of getting meaning from the printed page;therefore, decoding the print was emphasized, and understanding the print wassupposed to follow. In recent years, we have become aware that althoughreading and comprehending are important, they are not enough to draw studentsto being a community of readers, questioning, debating, and personallyresponding to literature. Book Clubs have evolved as a way to address the issueof students being more actively and critically engaged in their own response toliterature. Lastly, Book Clubs, in one form or another, have been found to lead toincrease of student enjoyment and engagement in reading, and to an increasein multicultural awareness and perspectives on social issues (Daniels, 2002;Commeyras & Sumner 1996).

We currently either order books with Scholastic Bonus Points, or we payfor them out of our own pockets. Each time we purchase a new title for BookClub, we purchase at least five copies of the book, as there are usually 5members in a Book Club. This becomes very costly; as hardcover booksaverage $15.00 a piece ($75.00 for a set) and paperback books average $7.00 apiece ($35.00 for a set).

1. The number of students that would be impacted by Book Club on a yearlybasis depends on the overall class size. For example, next year, approximately 490 students will participate in Book Club on a weekly

Page 41: Grants 26-47

basis. This means that at anyone time, we have 490 books out in thehands of our middle school students.

2. Several of the books that we have in our collection have been used for thelast 11 years. Hardcover books tend to last longer than paperback books.Hardcover books last about 3-4 years and paperback books last about 1-2years.

3. Book Club has been used in the 6th grade for the last 14 years and in the8th grade for the last 7 years.

4. Although the administration supports Book Club, there is not enoughmoney in the budget to support the program.

5. We participate in the payroll deduction program to support the Foundation.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Title of Proposal: SCOPE:The Language Arts Magazine offered by Scholastic

Dollar Amount Requested: $612.50

Estimated number of students to benefit per year: All of the 7th Grade Englishclasses (approximately 180 students)

Classroom Life: 3-5 Estimated years (magazines may be used year after year)

Detailed description of final outcome:

SCOPE:The Language Arts Magazine offered through Scholastic Book Clubs is amagazine printed and sent to schools 17 times throughout the school year. Everyissue includes paired text readings which gives students the opportunity toexplore a topic with two different authors providing information. This isincreasingly important due to the new Smarter Balanced testing that will beimplemented in the 2014 school year to assessthe new Common Core StateStandards [CCSS).Students need to be able to comprehend different texts andalso make connections and comparisons between them. In addition, there is anarrative non-fiction piece included in each issue. As we shift our emphasis fromthe Michigan Grade Level Content Expectations to the CCSS,we realize the needto implement a greater amount of nonfiction informational reading in Englishclass. As you can see by the cover of the sample magazine, another featured itemincluded in the monthly magazine is a debate piece. Students are giveninformation on a topic and then they are expected to form an educated opinion inorder to write an essay responding to the issue presented. Another sectionincludes a reader's theater play emphasizing drama which includes fictional aswell as nonfictional pieces for students to read aloud. Lastly, the grammar review

Page 43: Grants 26-47

is covered within the confines of a high interest article so students will be readingan article while editing for correct grammar and punctuation.

Describe the Educational Objective:

The SCOPEmagazine will be a supplementary tool to assist seventh gradeteachers in preparing students for the rigorous testing of the state assessments(MEAP-Grade Level Content Expectations and Smarter Balanced Assessment-Common Core State Standards).

Has a project like this been used in OPSbefore?

Other classrooms have utilized different magazines from Scholastic and othercompeting companies.

At times funding may become available from other sources. Could this projectbe enhanced with more funding?

No, additional funding would not be needed. If the funding is received, it wouldprovide two classroom teachers with 35 magazines to utilize in all 7th Grade ELAclassrooms. If partial funding is available, one classroom set of 35 could bepurchased for $306.25.

I attest that funding of this item is outside the scope of the building budget at thistime. If in subsequent years operating supplies are required, I understand thatthey will be funded through the budgeting process and further grants for such

ratin ies will be denied.

Educational Objective for the Excellence in Education Grant:

To foster literacy independence in our first grade classrooms.

Daily 5 is a series of literacy tasks (reading to self, reading withsomeone, writing, word work, and listening to reading) which studentscomplete daily while the teacher meets with small groups or confers

with individuals. It is based on literacy learning and motivation

research, and has been practiced and refined in various classroomsover the past 10 years. Currently, many schools are "going" school wide with thepractice of Daily 5 in elementary classrooms across the country. Within our own county,

Hopkins Elementary, Baker Elementary, Dorr Elementary, and Martin Elementary, are

just a few of the schools that are implementing the program. Current research suggeststhat 80% of a teacher's day is spent instructing, leaving only 20% a student's day toactually practice the skills we are instructing them in (Boushley & Moser). Our goal

should be the direct opposite.

Daily 5 Background Information:

Therefore, Daily 5, is a classroom management system, or framework, that fosters

literacy independence in the elementary classroom.

Current Practice:

Currently myself and the other two first grade teachers are implementing the Daily 5 in

our first grade classrooms at Dix Street Elementary. We feel that we have had greatsuccess and have found that the children have not only gained a love for books, buthave also gained the confidence in becoming an independent reader. This is extremelycritical at the first grade level.

Additional Training:

I have had the opp.ortunity to observe Daily 5 take place first hand in the other two firstgrade classrooms at Dix Street and have taken what I have seen and implemented theDaily Five framework into the classroom. I have also done my own personal research of

Daily 5 through reading and watching online trainings.

Funding needs for better implementation:

Page 48: Grants 26-47

Currently there are a few materials that would make the implementation of this"program" run smoother on a daily basis. Listen to Reading is one of the Daily 5strategies that help to foster strong reading vocabularies. Currently I have no means for

the students to participate in this form of Daily 5. After researching the best method forutilizing this in the classroom, the other two first grade classes use playlists of variousbooks that can be easily developed and downloaded on mp3 players. The children canthen listen to their own "playlist" of multiple book titles, including their favorites.

Therefore, we are asking for the Excellence in Education Grant to fund 5 mp3 players for

my classroom. I would use Michelle Triemstra to help in purchasing these 5 mp3 players.

The second expense I am looking for that falls under the same Daily 5 umbrella, is wordwork storage units. How to best utilize space seems to always be an issue in theelementary classroom. With word work children need to be able to quickly and easily

organize word work materials. The children would use these to store manipulativessuch as letter tiles, and wiki sticks to form spelling words and syllable types beingdiscussed in the classroom. Therefore we would like to purchase pull-out shelvingdrawers that can be found at most retail stores or educational catalogs. These costapproximately $60.00 a piece. We would need one of these units.

Overall Estimated Expense:

I am asking for $750.00 as an estimated amount to cover the expenses for the items

discussed above in enhancing the Daily 5 program.

Thank you for your time and consideration. Please feel free to contact us with anyquestions.

(75-90 students)5-10 yearsEstimated classroom life (in years):

Detailed description of final outcome (attach additional pages as needed):

Our hope is that the students who use these IPads will benefit from the ability to learn usinginteractive technology and that the technology will allow for a greater use of differentiatedinstruction in the classroom. We love when our students have the opportunity to use technologyto present what they are learning and to increase the depth of their learning. Weare aware thatour student's MEAP scores have declined over the years and students are not coming to the 4th

grade with their basic math facts mastered. We believe that the IPads will be a greatenhancement to reinforce the lessons, reteach basic skills, and help accelerate high achievingstudents. They will also allow students a creative way to present what they are learning.

In our numerous years of teaching we have come across many students who have had troublewith different concepts in the typical classroom environment. Students often get tired with aninactive pencil and paper. IPads will give students the opportunity to interact with a lesson, expand on a concept and help teach other students in the classroom. We believe that the IPadswould give students the freedom to discover concepts at their own pace and therefore deepentheir comprehension of the Common Core.

Overall, we want students to have another tool to deepen their understanding and enhance theirlearning experience.

Describe the educational objective:

Many classrooms are beginning to use IPads, and they are seeing good results! We hope to seethe same results within our classrooms. We have taken after school classes on differenteducational apps and realize the value these tools can have for our students. Research alsosupports the idea that IPads in a classroom will positively affect a child's learning.

Ipads have been found to enhance critical thinking and creativity. The interactive screen andcolor graphics will keep students engaged and excited about learning. We have no doubt that wewill see positive results, both behaviorally and academically, if we can incorporate IPads into ourclassrooms.

Has a project like this been used in OPS before: Yes X No __If "Yes" please explain.

We have 10 IPads available in the Media Center. However, due to our increasing class sizes wewill need more to meet the needs of our students. It would be beneficial to have two on hand inour classroom to help with students when we immediately see a need for reinforcement orenrichment.

At times funding may become available from other sources. Could thisproject be enhanced with more funding: Yes _X__ No __If 'Yes" please explain:

If there is extra funding we would love to have an IPad for every student! ©

IPads in ELA

Immediately

Estimated classroomlife (in years) _5_+ _

Detailed description of final outcome (attach additional pages as needed)With the help of Michelle Triemstra I would like to purchase IPads (2-3 depending on price) to use in my high school ELA classes.

The IPads will be permanently in the classroom, therefore, they will be available for student use on a daily basis. Recently, Michelle

has purchased a user license for me through ProProfs.com--a site which allows me to give short comprehension quizzes online with

immediate feedback. I am currently using the site for quizzes that most students are accessing through their personal devices (smartphones,

Ipods, etc); however, there are typically 4-5 students per class that do not have these devices. Having a few ipads in the classroom will allow

all students to participate.

Describe the educational objective:To increase student comprehension, achievement, and engagement through a technological device that is able to

provide instant feedback to the learner. Additionally, the teacher will be able to modify instruction in a more timely

fashion in order to help all students succeed.

Has a project like this been used in OPS before: Yes x NoIf "Yes" please explain.I believe that IPads are currently being used successfully in multiple elementary school classrooms.

At times funding may become available from other sources. Could this project beenhanced with more funding: Yes _x_ No __If "yes" please explain:This project could be enhanced with more funding in a variety of ways. First, additional funding could be used to purchase

more Ipads. Second, additional funding could be used to buy protective cases for the Ipads. Third, additional funding could

be used for downloading relevant educational apps. Finally, additional funding could purchase specialized storage I charging units.

I attest that funding of this item is outside the scope of the building budget at this time. Ifin subsequent years operating supplies are required, I understand that they will be fundedthrough the 'budgeting process and further grants for such operating supplies will bedenied.

Detailed description of final outcome.

An Otsego Public Schools Foundation Grant would purchase materials needed to transition ourmiddle school students from the MEAP Test to the Smarter Balance Common Core Assessment. Thetest will be gradually implemented beginning the 2014 academic year. For the past 7 years the State ofMichigan followed Grade Level Content Objectives. Presently, the state is transitioning to Common CoreCurriculum. Common Core Curriculum is rigorous and demanding. It will prepare our students well forthe ACT assessment.

The materials requested are a series of books that promote best teaching practices needed toaddress the Common Core. They include guided reading, independent practice, and critical/analyticalthinking. The lessons are intense and they model the types of activities our students will be performingon the Smarter Balance Common Core Test.

Attached are a set of the s" grade books. Take a look at the lessons and notice the depth ofknowledge our middle school students are required to obtain. The standards are impressive, for ourstudents are being held to very high expectations. However, our middle school Language Artsdepartment is in sincere need of materials to enable our students to meet these standards.

Describe the educational objective:

The educational objective is to ensure students in Otsego Middle School can meet the demands ofthe curriculum developed by the State of Michigan. In turn; this curriculum will promote very welleducated students that will have choices when determining their post high school education, careers, and livelihoods.
