On November 6th, your child will bring home their Elementary Progress Report.

The format was created after years of consultation with parents, teachers, princi-

pals, and students across the province. Although it looks much like the Report

Card, this report has a very different intent. The purpose of the Progress Report is

to share early and specific feedback on your child's development of work habits

and learning skills as well as his/her progress towards achieving the curriculum

standards by the end of the school year.

Traditionally, when reporting to parents about their child’s progress, teachers have

prepared by looking back over the work done. The teacher evaluated your child’s

progress from the beginning of the school term to the current point in time, and

reported on the highlights of achievement as they compare to overall curricular

expectations. Teachers continue to report on Provincial Term One and Term Two

Report Cards in this manner.

Reporting on the Progress Report is about looking forward. The purpose is to set the

course for the learning journey ahead. Based on the evidence teachers see, as well

as what teachers know about learning at this grade level, the report communicates

the path your child is on towards achieving the grade level expectations by the end

of the year. For students who are on a modified Individual Education Program, the

teacher uses those modified goals when determining whether a child is progress-

ing well, progressing very well, or progressing with difficulty.

All subjects that are part of your child’s program in the first weeks of school will be

assessed according to the following indicators:

Progressing Very Well: In the first weeks of school, evidence shows that the stu-dent is demonstrating consistent progress and is on track to meet and/or surpass

the provincial standard set for the end of the year.

Progressing Well: In the first weeks of school, evidence shows that the student is

demonstrating consistent progress and is on track to meet the provincial standard

set for the end of the year.

Progressing With Difficulty: In the first weeks of school, evidence shows that the student is experiencing difficulty towards meeting the provincial standard set for

the end of the year.

For subjects in which your child is Progressing With Difficulty, the teacher will dis-

cuss specific next steps plans needed for success. We look forward to partnering

with you and your child for a year of great learning and growth.

Progress Reports (SK- Grade 8) will be going home on Thursday, November 6, 2014 and details

about Parent/Teacher Interviews and the interview process will be sent home

closer to the end of October.

Term 1 Report Cards (JK- Grade 8) will be going home on Friday, February 6, 2015. Parent

teacher interviews will be scheduled only on an "as needed‟ or requested basis

before or after these report cards go home.

Term 2 Report Cards (JK- Grade 8) will be going home on Wednesday, June 24, 2015.

Details regarding Kindergarten reporting/ interviews and parent observations will

be shared through the Kindergarten Program newsletters

At a young age, we all learn to share. We share our belongings,

thoughts and ideas.

Although we usually encourage children to share, there is one

thing that we’d prefer that doesn’t get passed around this year: germs!

While being back at school gives children more opportunity to interact with

each other and play together, there are some simple steps we can all take to help each other avoid

coughs, colds and more serious types of infections.

Wash those hands! We recommend that students, and even parents, wash their hands with

soap and water regularly. If there isn’t a sink nearby, using a good hand sanitizer should do

the trick.

Cover all coughs and sneezes. This will cut down on the number of icky things floating

around in the air and landing on surfaces, making it less likely that children will breathe

them in or touch them. If you have to cough or sneeze, do it into a tissue or onto your upper

sleeve.

If you’re sick, stay home. Although it’s important to be in class, don’t be a superhero. Take

some time, feel better and then come back when you’re healthy, alert and ready to learn!

At the Grapeview, we follow an infection control program to help keep both our students and staff

healthy and in class. Our staff will be reinforcing proper handwashing techniques as well as cough

and sneeze etiquette. In addition, all classrooms are equipped with hand sanitizers and our care-

taking staff will disinfect our commonly used areas, such as desks and doorknobs, regularly.

PROMOTING INDEPENDENCE AND KEEPING STUDENTS SAFE

Now that our students are familiar with our school and know how to get to their classrooms,

please help promote their independence by allowing students to walk to their classrooms

by themselves.

For safety reasons, it is essential that we are aware of every adult in the building.

Every non-staff member adult in the building during school hours must wear a visi-

tor’s pass, as per our school safety plan.

Please drop off and pick up your child outside. If you would like to see your child’s teach-

er, please call to make an appointment. If you are volunteering during the day (which we

truly appreciate), please sign in at the office and obtain a visitor’s pass.

STAFFING UPDATE

A Grapeview Welcome goes out to Mr. Neil Carnegie who is teaching Grade 7/8, Mrs.

Michelle Visser who is teaching Grade 3 and Mrs. Lourdes Rosito-De Simone who is teach-

ing Grade 2/3. Thank you for your support with these transitions.

LATES AND ABSENCES

HELPERS WANTED—PIZZA

If you are interested in helping to organize, collect and order

pizza for our student pizza days please contact Mrs. Gadsby

in the office! We thank-you for your continued support!!!

When a student is late, he/she must report to the office prior to going to the classroom to get a

“late slip” to present to the teacher. If you know your child will be late please contact the office.

This will save a phone call from Mrs. Brown to ensure your child’s safety. If your child is ill, please

be sure to notify the office prior to 9:00 a.m. We have an answering machine available for your con-

venience, if you need to phone in the evening or early morning. If your child is absent and we do

not receive a call, Mrs. Brown or Mrs. Thoms, our secretaries, will contact you in order to

ensure that your child is safe.

Instructions:

Ask your adult helper to cut the bottoms off of the two plastic soda bottles.

Fit the bottles together so there is a neck on either end. Tape the bottles together to form a football shape.

Cover the bottles with construction paper and ribbon if you want to decorate your zoom ball.

Thread the two strings through the bottles.

Take the six-pack holders and cut the rings apart to make four two-loop handles.

Tie a set of handles to the ends of each string.

Get at friend and you are ready to play. Each player holds onto two handles and pulls on the strings until they are tight. Slide the

zoom ball to one end. When it is at your end snap your hands apart to send the zoom ball back to your friend. To catch the

zoom ball, keep your hands together.

Explanation:

The pushing action of the strings sets the zoom ball in motion. When the zoom ball reaches the other end of the strings, an oppo-

site pushing action, this is your friend snapping the strings, stops the ball for a moment and then sends it in the reverse direction.

Mad Science, the world’s leading provider of educational and entertaining science programs for children is

coming to Grapeview Public School. Their mission is to spark the imagination and curiosity of children eve-

rywhere by providing them with fun, entertaining and exciting activities that instill a clear understanding of

what science is really all about and how it affects the world around them. They use exciting activities and

spectacular demonstrations to capture the attention and imagination of children as we will fidn out during

our assembly.

Both the students and teachers will be thrilled on Oct 17, 2014 at 1:50 PM when Mad Science comes to the

school to do a Spectacular Science show. The assembly will be educational, entertaining and also the kick

off to the Mad Science Club. The Club is a 6-week science enrichment program offered to the students. Sign

up sheets will be sent home that day.

Students who join the science club will go on a voyage of discovery designed to support the Ontario Sci-

ence and Technology curriculum. They will explore various topics while participating in our Crazy

Chemworks program. The Club will take place on Thursday, Nov 6, 13, 20, 27, Dec 4, 11 from 3:25 PM - 4:25

PM.

For those of you who have been in the Mad Science Club before, this is a different club than last year with

exciting experiments, cool demonstrations and amazing take home activities.

Our Magazine Fundraiser Campaign is back! Thanks for waiting to

order your magazine renewals. The money raised will help support

the many programs and activities that will benefit our students.

IMPORTANT NOTE:

We have extended the end date to our campaign to

Tuesday, October 14th.

Communication Classes will be holding a cake raffle (Cakes for Autism). Tickets

are 2 for $1.00 or 5 for $2.00)

Thank you to everyone who purchased tickets for our first cake raffle

in September. The proceeds will help subsidize the Communication

Class trips this year.

A huge thank you goes out to Medin Basic and his mom Selma for

providing our amazing cakes each month. You are so talented Selma!

Thank you Grapeview for your support!

Mrs. Rupcic and Ms. Press

We are encouraging all parents to use the Kiss n' Ride at the front of the school. Remem-

ber Kiss n' Ride is a drop off lane....no permanent parking. Your child can then proceed

directly to the playground.

Please remember that we have many buses dropping off students and picking up stu-

dents at our school. The bus lane is marked on the tarmac (in front of the entrance to our

school) and is a no parking zone. Please cooperate with staff supervisors to ensure that

students are safely dropped off and picked up each day!

St. John’s Ambulance Therapy Dogs Visit

Grapeview on Wednesdays

Grapeview school is very fortunate to be participating in the “PAWS 4 STORIES” pro-

gram. There are many benefits that children gain in brief one on one sessions with

the companionship of a certified St. John Ambulance Therapy Dog. It has been found

that when a therapy dog is listening, the environment is transformed and a child’s

dread of reading is replaced by eager anticipation, which allows learning to occur.

The children also make great strides in their reading and communication skills while

building self-esteem, confidence and social skills. Children find great comfort in sit-

ting with their 4-legged friends, stroking them or telling them about their day. The

dogs seem to know that children just need a furry ear to listen to them quietly as they

form a wonderful bond! A former Grapeview parent, Lori Thwaites along with several

trained St. John’s therapy dogs and volunteers have started to visit every Wednesday

morning to run this worthwhile program. The dogs have been “child tested” by the

St. John Ambulance Therapy Dog Program and their handler is with them at all times.

The students from the Communication Classes and Fundamental Skills Class have

kicked off the program with great excitement. Several other students throughout the

school will be given permission forms as they are invited to participate over the next

few weeks.

SCHOOL COUNCIL VOTING FORM

I declare myself/ourselves ______________________ OR

_____________________________ to be one voting household of the Grapeview Public School Council Member for the 2014 – 2015 school year. Voting members will then be elected, from amongst themselves, the Executive for the School Council at our next meeting November 11, 2014. I am/am not an employee of the District School Board of Niagara at Grapeview School (Circle as applies). I understand that only one parent/guardian from each household may hold a voting position on the Council. ________(initial). I understand that employees of the District School Board of Niagara that work at Grape-view School may not hold an executive position on the Council. __________ (initial).

Please return this form to Grapeview Public School to the attention of the Vice Principal

by October 24, 2014. DECISION MAKING PROCESS by CONSENSUS

The Council makes decisions through consensus.

Consensus means that:

I can live with the decision

I will support my colleagues in implementing this decision

I will do absolutely nothing to impede the implementation of this decision

Each Council member supports the decision as the best choice for the entire school community.

After the Council members fully explore a proposal, all concerns and questions have been resolved and it appears that consensus has been reached (using the Chair who

double checks for consensus) by asking:

“Are there any other questions, issues or concerns?”

If no one speaks, then the Chair calls for an affirmation of the consensus to indicate

that a decision has been made.

Once consensus is reached on a decision, the group will determine:

What the next steps are, who will take them and by when

Who needs to know, who is going to tell them and by when

If individual members of the group cannot support consensus, they are invited to the next meeting of the presenting group to work through their differences and decide upon a

vote.
