Rev Barry Writes...... .At St Nicholas’ we are now midway through a study of 1 Corinthians, which is a letter from St Paul to the people of Corinth, a place I visited last July. I actually stood on the very spot where anyone wishing to speak publicly would have stood in the time of Paul. And so, it follows that this was the very spot Paul first preached the good news of Jesus to the Corinthians. The letter, numbered one of two, as we have two such letters, are believed to be part of a set of four. The letters are in response to the concerns of some of the people in the church in Corinth regarding standards of behav-iour within the church. This response has been used throughout the church-es’ history to determine and give guidance on how Christians should con-duct themselves. I know you are thinking, ‘well you wouldn’t think so by what we so often see today.’ You would be right. Interpretation is often the cause of debate and sadly, painful disagreement. This is ironic, because the letter is intended to do the opposite. We do not have the information Paul received to which he was responding. We do not have the information Paul received and to which he was responding and although many suggest it would help no end if we did I suggest. The difficulty does not lie in what is written, but in the superficial interpreta-tion. Some people try and make what is written support what they believe. When it comes to the Word of God, it means what it is saying to you at that moment in time. The only way to understand what God is sharing with us is to discern such, spiritually. This very letter tells us that the cleverest of peo-ple, who without God’s spirit, know little of God. Whilst, those of whatever ability can, with God’s spirit, understand a great deal. This is the answer we should give when people claim they are Christian but do not need to go to church. We do not go to church to agree with each other. We go to church to support each other as a community, being toler-ant of difference whilst lovingly building each other up. It is by serving the will of God in our community, as community, that we are gifted God’s insight. We will never find it doing our own thing. We are only privileged by God’s intervention if we live a life for Him. A life that see us help and love the peo-ple around us. Not just those like ourselves, but all people, even those we disagree with. Rev Barry

St Nicholas LOOs and LIGHTs CAMPAIGN

Have you ever used the toilet in our church? You will appreciate that, after 40 years, it needs updating. Your Church Council has decided that the toilet facilities must now be improved and plan to create 3 sepa-rate toilets (including an accessible one) and a new tea-bar in the church - all to 21st century standards. These new facilities will be constructed within the existing office and vestry area; it will cost around £35,000. At the same time, we intend to improve the standard of lighting in the church to make it less harsh and a more flexible source for services and other events; this will cost around £10,000. So, in total we need to raise £45,000. We shall be running a variety of fund-raising events in 2019 but the majority of the funds need to be raised by us in the form of donations. If you would like to see improved toilet facilities and better lighting in the church please consider making a donation. Please pick up a donation form from the back of church or from the website www.stnicholasallington.org.uk so you can contribute towards this major im-provement to our facilities. WHO ARE THEY? Where did all the Christian denominations come from?

We continue the series on Christian Churches in the UK Who Are They? - Where did the Christian Brethren come from? The Christian Brethren are conservative evangelical Christians who trace their beginnings to the 1830s in Ireland and England. The first fellowship of these ‘Believers,’ as they preferred to call themselves, was established at Plymouth, Devon, and this gave rise to the later designation ‘Plymouth Brethren.’ In fact the actual beginnings of this movement were in Trinity College, Dub-lin, in the late 1820s. Three undergraduates were to be the founders of the new evangelical movement. Edward Cronin (1801-1882) went to Trinity Col-lege in 1826. He was refused communion unless he joined a church. He pro-tested and withdrew from church attendance. He believed that the ‘Church is one body’ and so all true believers have a right to the Lord’s Table. John Gifford Bellett (1795-1864) studied law at Trinity College and became one of the founder members of the Dublin group. Anthony Norris Groves (1795-1853) went to Trinity as a high churchman to prepare for ordination. In fel-lowship with Cronin and Bellett, he came to the place where he believed that ‘ordination’ is not required in Scripture in order to preach the gospel. Such was Groves’ influence in the group that later Christian Brethren writers came to regard him as the founder of the movement. It was, however, John Nelson Darby (1800-1882) who came to be the recog-nised leader and who gave the movement very high profile. Darby had studied classics at Trinity, took up the practice of law and was ordained into the ministry of the Church of Ireland in 1825. Increasingly he became uneasy about the Episcopal Church of Ireland being the ‘Established’ Church in a country predominately Roman Catholic. In 1827 he published a book, ‘On the Nature and Unity of the Church of Christ’, and subsequently left the An-glican communion. He argued for the unity of all believers, the regenerating work of the Holy Spirit, and the Second Coming of Christ. Darby was a very forceful preacher, a biblical scholar of note and a very determined contro-versialist The earliest ‘Brethren’ leaders in England were Benjamin Wills Newton (1807-1899), George Wigram (1805-1879), and Percy Francis Hall (1804-1884). Newton was born in Plymouth of Quaker stock, studied classics at Exeter College, Oxford, experienced an evangelical conversion in 1827 and became a radical evangelical leader. In his early Christian days he was strongly influ-enced by Darby. George Wigram, a former soldier, also studied at Oxford and expressed his

discontent with the Church of England, publishing A Protest against the Es-tablishment. Percy Hall was a naval captain and a very busy evangelical lay preacher. In 1831 Newton, Darby, Wigram and Hall began services in Providence Chapel, Plymouth. These services marked the beginning of the Christian Brethren movement, though in fact the Dublin meetings predated Plymouth by a few years. It was the Plymouth services that gave the movement its name, Plymouth Brethren, though Darby and the other leaders referred to themselves simply as Believers. The new movement spread very rapidly. Each fellowship was independent and had its own local elders. All ministry at every level was done by men and while women attended, they were not allowed to take any part in the services, not even to pray. A particular distinctive of the Brethren services was the weekly ‘breaking of bread’ service as the Communion service was called. Only those in fellowship in the local assembly and who were of known Christian character could participate at the Lord’s Table. Brethren people travelling to other places needed a letter of recommendation from their own assembly if they wanted to share in the Lord’s Table in another Brethren gathering. Biblical prophecy became one of the major tenets of the new movement. Darby, Newton, Groves and all the early Brethren leaders were very interest-ed in the Second Coming of Christ. Although they differed on details, they all stressed that it would be literal Coming and that it was imminent. Christ’s return will usher in his 1000 year reign on earth – the Millennium. This meant that Brethren teaching was pre-millennial, in contrast to the post-millennialism of the Protestant Reformers. In Plymouth some of the Brethren leaders preached a ‘secret Rapture.’ The word ‘Rapture’ refers to Christ ‘taking up’ his people at his Coming. Darby and others taught that this is what Paul meant when he wrote to the Thessalonian Christians. ‘The dead in Christ will rise first, then we who are alive, who are left, shall be caught up (Greek, harpazo, meaning, ‘seize,’) together with them in the clouds ..’(1Thess. 4:17). This teaching also emphasised that Christ’s Second Coming will be in two stages. He will come first ‘to the air’ for his people, then he will return later with his people to rule on earth. Christ’s ‘first coming’ will be secret – only his own will know of it. His ‘second coming’ will be public and all will see him. This teaching on Christ’s Second Coming and a ‘secret rapture’ was to characterise much of Brethren theology to the present day. Benjamin Newton became the acknowledged Brethren leader in England and John Nelson Darby had the same recognition in Ireland. Darby strongly advocated his distinctive teaching on prophecy and took a very hard line against most of the rest of Christendom. He argued that all true Christians should withdraw from the ‘apostate’ churches, by which he meant all the

8

denominations that did not share his theological outlook. Newton was less dogmatic than Darby and was alarmed at the spread of ‘secret rapture’ teaching, believing this was not what the New Testament taught. He was supported in this by George Muller (1805 – 1895). Born into a Lutheran home in Prussia, Muller was converted in 1825. He came to London in 1829 to train for missionary work among Jews. While in Devon he met with the Brethren movement and joined it. In 1835 he opened an orphanage in Bris-tol and the work grew from being one rented house to many buildings on Ashley Down, Bristol. With Anthony Groves, Muller became an acknowl-edged Brethren leader in the Bristol area and their ministries were charac-terised by moderation and a willingness to work with other Christians in the Lord’s work. As well as his strong emphasis on a ‘secret rapture,’ Darby began to popu-larise what became known as Dispensationalism. By ‘dispensation’ he meant a specific period of time that God has given to mankind to test their obedience to him. Darby divided all human history into 7 Dispensations. These are: 1.the age of Innocence (before the Fall), 2.the age of Conscience (from the Fall to Noah), 3. the age of Human Government (from Noah to Abraham), 4.the age of Promise (from Abraham to Moses), 5. the age of Law (from Moses to Christ), 6. the age of Grace (the Church age), 7. the Kingdom (Christ’s Millennial reign on earth). This Dispensational teaching became very influential. It was later promoted by the Schofield Bible and more recently a form of it is seen in the popular writings of Hal Lindsey, Tim LaHaye, (the ‘Left Behind’ novels and films) and the late Jerry Falwell. Tensions developed between Newton and Darby. Newton was supported by Muller and by Samuel Tregelles (1813-1875), an outstanding linguist and biblical textual scholar. Newton was strongly opposed to Darby’s teaching on a ‘secret rapture’ and a ‘two-stage’ Coming of Christ. Sadly the division was bitter and had far-reaching consequences. The original Plymouth as-sembly fell apart and the whole Brethren movement in Britain was affected. Eventually it led to two groups being formed; Open Brethren, led by New-ton, Muller and others, and Exclusive Brethren, led by Darby. The Brethren movement has spread around the world and today its adher-ents are generally known as Christian Brethren. The ‘exclusive’ wing of the movement is quite small. ‘Brethren’ Christians are known for their evangeli-cal doctrines, their missionary zeal and their strong emphasis on Bible teaching. In the 20th century quite a number of outstanding Biblical schol-ars belonged to the Christian Brethren, notably Professor F. F. Bruce (1910-1990). Dr H B McGonigle is Senior Lecturer in Historical Theology, Church History and Wesley Studies in Nazarene Theological College, Manchester, England. Originally published in 2007 - Parish Pump

JESUS RECEIVES THE HOLY SPIRIT As Jesus started his adult ministry he was baptised by John the Baptist and then re-ceived the Holy Spirit. This month, I am using one person’s understanding of how God’s Ho-ly Spirit showed through in the life of Jesus, from a traditional commentary by G.F. Holden. In the Gospels, we see how the Holy Spirit gave to Jesus his deep understanding of the scriptures, what we know as the Old Testa-ment. We see wisdom in his choosing to spend long periods of prayer alone with God. And we see how this peasant carpenter from one of most obscure parts of the Roman Em-pire produced the most wonderful religion the world has ever seen. There was our Lord’s deep insight into the world around him. Nothing seemed to escape his notice. He saw the farm hand, people harrowing and sowing, the management of the estate or the sweeping of the dust in the house, commerce, the courts of justice and more. He used much of this background in his parables and in his teaching about the Kingdom of God. It was one thing to have acquired this understanding, it was quite another to have the gift of passing on that understanding to others. Jesus not only taught about the power of God, but showed it in how he lived his life. There was the tender love of Jesus for the sick and suffering. There was the courageous intimacy of Jesus with people with leprosy and on the outer edge of society. He showed that to be Godlike was to be full of mercy and pity. He also spent time going to meet people where they were. In his social re-lations with people, whoever they were, there was this wonderful combina-tion of sympathy, love, refinement, tenderness and acute perception. It was a power and ability to come into effective touch with others. There were also times When Jesus showed gifts of strength and courage. He challenged the attitudes of his day into what the Sabbath or Holy Day of the week should mean. He also challenged and changed the perception of how the expected Messiah should come. In those days the expectation was for a strong arm to make Israel supreme amongst the nations. Instead Jesus showed the line of prophecy that pointed to a very different kind of leader. There was a picture of true godliness. He was strong but never rough, He

was gentle but never weak. He mixed with people freely but did not allow people to presume upon him. Jesus entered into a full life of public duty after it seems thirty years of duty at home. He was conspicuous in his devo-tion to God yet no less complete in his service to men and women Overall, we can also look back to Jesus’ life of devotion. There were those long nights spent alone with the Father in prayer. There were the appeals for guidance before great moments in his ministry such as before some mir-acle, before the selection of the Twelve, the intensity and agony of his pray-er in the Garden of Gethsemane where he was betrayed and arrested. And there was the touching reliance on the Father towards the end of the cruel agony on the cross. After all this came the Resurrection and the passing on of the Holy Spirit to the first disciples. And that passing on has continued down through the years to the present day. Robin Hiam

More little bags of ‘loot’ for Liuli Twenty one bags of coins and a couple of trips to the bank, aided by a strong husband, and another cheque is on its way to the Friends of St Anne’s Hospital, Liuli, Tanzania. Lots of pennies and those irritating 5p pieces have helped to send £70 for the hospital. That doesn’t buy very much here, but in the poor area of Tan-zania where the hospital is the only medical facility within a two -day jour-ney of many villages, £70 will pay a nurse’s wages, or stock a medicine cab-inet for months. Thank you, again, to all of you who have saved small change in jam jars over the past year. Those of us who knew Daphne will miss her for many rea-sons, but I shall miss her especially for the generous and faithful way in which she supported St Anne’s Hospital over several years, collecting her pennies, bringing the full jar to church and returning with an empty one. If anyone is willing to help in this small way, just collect change in any jam jar, or take one from the table at the back of church, and return it when it’s not too full to carry! The good it does outweighs the monetary value. Thank you. Dianne White 756660

News of the Church in the UK How do you become a vicar? This month, dioceses across the Church of England will welcome new dea-cons and priests at special services in their cathedrals. This is because, tradi-tionally, most ordination services take place at the end of June, during Peter-tide. Have you ever wondered how someone becomes a vicar? Here is a brief description of the journey: It begins with a call from God upon your life. Dis-cerning this can take months or even years of reflection and prayer. The next step is to talk to your vicar, or to a member of the vocations team in your diocese. Your diocese will help you to identify what type of ministry could best suit your gifts and talents. Your bishop will then send you to a se-lection residential known as a Bishop’s Advisory Panel. Here they will assess your understanding of the Church, your faith, your sense of vocation, leader-ship, and collaboration. The panel will decide whether or not to recommend to your bishop that you go forward for ordination training. If you are recommended, then the next step is to enter a training course at one of the theological education insti-tutes (TEIs) based around the country. These can be either residential or non-residential. Training usually takes two to three years. After the course, an ordinands will normally receive either a bachelor’s degree or a diploma of higher educa-tion. Your tuition fees are covered by the Church, which also pays a contribu-tion towards your living expenses. After ordination, newly ordained clergy begin their ministerial life as dea-cons. The first jobs they do are called curacies (they are known as curates). Your curacy will be an opportunity to serve alongside an experienced vicar. Here you can put into practice the knowledge gained from your course and learn from them as you prepare for your own ministry. After a year, most deacons are ordained again, as a priest. All sorts of people train for ordination. There really is no such thing as ‘typical’ ordained person. What all candidates do share is a genuine and heartfelt desire to serve God and to serve others. How long could you make £60 last? That is the latest challenge from Children’s Society, as they seek to highlight the plight of many poor people. Children’s Society says: “Imagine the worst week. Your car needs repairs, your boiler has broken, you need to get the groceries in, but you have only £60 left until you get paid next week. Can you make it last?” If you would like to test yourself, to see how you would manage, take the quiz at https://www.childrenssociety.org.uk/news-and-blogs/our-blog/

God’s Creation

God’s creation, what a sensation Myriads of stars all known by name, Each constellation telling their story, Bursting with glory, God’s power to proclaim.

Beautiful Pleiades, The Bear with its Cubs, Orion’s Belt, all set in the sky Our planet of blue transfixed in the heavens Touched with the finger of God from on high.

The sun like a bridegroom rejoices on rising His course devising from east to west As he leaves his pavilion in golden splendour With warmth and light on our earth to bless.

Light from darkness, order from chaos Land and oceans come into view, Magnificent Artist, Architect, Builder, Not only Creator – but a Saviour too.

difficult-decisions-in-a-crisis? Behind the quiz, however, the Childrens’ Society is deadly serious. “Low wages, poor housing and public service cutbacks have left many families struggling. They have to make impossible choices every single day. One bit of bad luck quickly leads to families not being able to afford the basics. “To make matters far worse, the council-run emergency funds that used to be there to support vulnerable families are at risk, and have disappeared altogether in some areas, leaving people with nowhere to turn.” If you can help, go to https://www.childrenssociety.org.uk/ Editorial from Parish Pump

Wordsearch - St Columba - June 2019 This month the Church remembers the Irish monk who first brought Christi-anity to Britain in around 565. He was St Columba, and he left Ireland with 12 companions to settle on Iona, a tiny island off Mull, A prayer of St Columba runs: My dearest Lord, Be Thou a bright flame before me, Be Thou a guiding star above me, Be Thou a smooth path beneath me, Be Thou a kindly shepherd behind me, Today and evermore. Pam Blake WESTBOROUGH BOWLS CLUB One of the things that I enjoy most about playing at Westborough Bowls Club is the roll-ups. No, I am not a smoker — a roll-up is an informal “turn up and play” session where members are drawn at random into teams to play matches against other members. These are very sociable occasions and a great way to prac-tice your game in a relaxed environ-ment. They are also an excellent op-portunity to encourage the newer members and familiarise them with the mechanics and etiquette of the game of bowls. Our roll-ups are held during the sea-son on Mondays starting at 3pm and Thursdays starting at 5pm. Alt-hough the sessions are primarily for members, if you are at all interested in trying the game of bowls, just come along and we can introduce you to the rudiments of the game. If

you are already a bowler and want to give Westborough a try, you would be welcome to join in the members’ roll-up games. You will be guaran-teed a warm welcome. Just contact me if you are interested. Although the roll-ups are fun, it is good to play competitively from time to time and so we have club knock-out tournaments each year, pitting member against member. There are singles, pairs and triples competitions, with a combination of ladies’, men’s and mixed events. New for this year, we are trying a mixed singles com-petition where we are applying hand-icaps to give everyone a fair chance. It will be interesting to see how this goes. The tournaments continue over the summer, culminating in a finals weekend in early September when the winners and runners up are decid-ed. Last year, I did not win anything so I must be off now to get some prac-tice in. Bye for now! Steve Cordery 725650 [email protected] www.westboroughbowls.co.uk OPEN CIRCLE Easter was a busy time for all of us I expect, but it was also a time to read a bit more in the lighter eve-nings. I enjoyed Vinegar Girl by Anne Tyler, a simple (and short!) re-telling of Shakespeare’s Taming of the Shrew designed for modern readers. It’s a light read, quite amusing in parts and worth picking up at the library. Vox, by Christina Dalcher was quite a different novel, set in America in a dystopian future, ruled by men, where women are only allowed to speak 100

words a day. The central character, Jean McClellan, was an expert ge-neticist before the revolution, and the novel charts her revolt against the system to rescue herself and her daughter from silence when she and her husband uncover a fiendish plot to silence all America’s enemies. Still not as convincing as The Handmaid’s Tale, it was a good read and a hun-dred times better than the ghastly Power. The Death of Mrs Westaway by Ruth Ware was also a good read involving an inheritance, a deception and a few deaths along the way. Ruth Ware is a good writer of psychologi-cal novels and I’m looking forward to reading more of them. The Woman in Cabin 10 and In a Dark, Dark Wood all come highly recommended. I’m currently reading Shadow of Night, the second in the All Souls tril-ogy by Deborah Harkness. I really enjoyed A Discovery of Witches, and the dramatisation of it on television last autumn, but I want to finish Shadow of Night before the second television series begins. Finally, our book for June is the third S.G. Maclean historical novel, De-stroying Angel, with his central char-acter, Damian Seeker. Set in Crom-well’s Puritan England in York in 1655, no doubt there will be a mur-der to solve and plots to uncover! Our meetings in June are on the 12th at Margaret Salvage’s (36 Poplar Grove) for the book discussion, and at Eleanor Bole’s (44 Leonard Close) on 26th for coffee and chat. All are welcome. ST NICHOLAS FELLOWSHIP It was a cold spring Friday afternoon when sixteen members of the Fellowship were given a warm welcome to All Saints Church, Maidstone, by the Rev’d Ian Parrish. There has been a Church on this site from as early as the 7th century, with the neighbouring manor house being given to the Archbishop of Canterbury c1207. The Rev’d Ian Parrish explained how the Heritage Trail within the Church had evolved as part of the welcome offered to visitors and he remained through-out our visit and answered any questions. We were able to follow at our own pace the fourteen col-ourful interpretive panels which showed the Christian heritage and history of the magnificent building. The Heritage Trail is well worth a visit. Our next meeting will be on Friday 14th June at 2.30 p.m. at St. Nicholas Church when the speaker will be a representative from Bloodrunners Everyone is welcome to come along to our meetings Michael Froude 01622 759098 ALLINGTON TREFOIL GUILD On the 13th April Allington hosted the Annual County Trefoil meeting, after the AGM Mary Smith gave a presentation called A Schoolgirl's War, which was set at Maidstone Girls' Grammar School in WW2.

Several members went on a Royal Parks Ramble in London covering St James, Green Park and Hyde Park, afterwards they enjoyed a cream tea at Girlguiding HQ. At our next meeting in May we have a presentation on how to create a wild-life friendly garden. If you would like to join us for our meeting please email us at [email protected] Nicola [email protected] MENS BREAKFAST Although there were only 8 of us we still found plenty to talk about including an insight of Medway Aircraft Preservation Society ( MAPS ) . Maps are based at Rochester airport and have an international reputation for restoring and preserving historical aircraft. MAPS started life in 1977 founded by Lewis Deal and the first restoration was the Manston 'gate guardian' Mk XVI Spitfire it was preserved and re-turned to the station in 1979. Brian was privileged to be invited to see what goes on and invited Mike and Malcolm to go along knowing that they had an interest in flying hav-ing recently been up in a Tiger moth and a Spitfire respectively. We were met by Brians friend Tom Bowling an ex RAF chap and given a detailed tour of the workshops and hanger. We were amazed at the skills shown by the volunteers all of whom were-from different background and skills and of course of a certain age group. At the time of our visit, they were working on a Shorts Scion fuselage

Charity of the Month CAST/Family Trust

The Family Trust foundations were first formed in 1986 when a Christian children’s worker started visiting local Primary schools to deliver Christian themed assemblies. Alongside this work they also visited local mainstream Churches of various denominations to support their Sunday Schools and lead holiday clubs – The Family Trust was born! Now a registered Christian Charity with employees, associates, valued vol-unteers and prayer partners, The Family Trust reaches children across Maidstone, Medway and Swale regularly by visiting over 170 schools and supporting numerous Churches with their children’s activities.

which will be completed to its for-mer glory in every detail. These guys work meticulously in every detail and in most cases, the fin-ished rebuild will be mainly for stat-ic display. The aircraft that have been re-stored are endless including Super Marine Spitfire's, Hawker Hurrican, Hawker Tempest even a Bristol Sycamore helicopter to name but a few. MAPS are always looking for volun-teers regardless of skills just enthu-siasm and a lot of friendly chat. MAPS website www.maps.co.uk Brian Davison 01622 759278 NEW ALLINGTON PLAYERS Although we are not currently re-hearsing for any particular show, we have been meeting for eve-nings of play-readings. This is partly to amuse ourselves, but also partly to see if anything jumps out at us which might be worth producing. Our next meeting will be on Friday

14th June at 7.30at Sally Brailsford’s (54 Poplar Grove). Anyone is free to come along and read a part, with no commitment to perform on stage, un-less you feel like it! In the meantime, I’m sure many of us have been enjoying performances at the Hazlitt recently, including Oliver by the Maidstone Amateur Operatic Society, and Arsenic and Old Lace by the Willington Players. We’re very for-tunate in having an active, local thea-tre and it’s always good to support it, especially as Frederic’s restaurant around the corner from the theatre offers such an excellent two-course pre-theatre dinner! Dianne White 756660 MID KENT FUSCHIA CLUB The speaker at our meeting on 11th April was Kent author Bob Ogley who gave a talk about ‘Kent in the 19th Century.’ We do not have a meeting at St Nicholas in June; instead we are attending our Annual Dinner at The Grange Moor Hotel Mary Hart

God among the ruins The tragic fire at Note Dame Cathe-dral shocked the whole world. See-ing such a magnificent building en-gulfed in flames saddened all who saw the devastation unfold. It was a monumental blow to the nation of France. It will take years to rebuild this famous place of worship. One striking image from the fire showed the interior of the church scorched and ruined, its art treasures lost, its contents still smouldering. But high up in the background, unbowed by the flames, stands a golden cross, brightly shining in the darkness of the surrounding debris. Since the fire took place at Easter, it is hard not to see this picture as a para-ble. One Anglican vicar made this comment: ‘Notice what is left inside, un-touched, after the destruction of all sorts of ‘priceless’ works of arts at Norte Dame Cathedral? The Cross. What an image for Holy Week and what a pic-ture to describe secular Western Europe.’ As I pondered the picture it spoke to me of the abiding value of the Cross. The words of a hymn came to mind:

In the cross of Christ I glory, Tow’ring o’er the wrecks of time; All the light of sacred story Gathers round its head sublime.

The place of worship may be destroyed, but not the God we worship. The message of the Cross, at the centre of our faith, remains a timeless, undam-aged truth. The hymn continues:

When the woes of life o’ertake me, Hopes deceive, and fears annoy, Never shall the cross forsake me, Lo! It glows with peace and joy.

Even among the ruins of our own lives the Cross stands tall, reminding us of the presence of God and His grip on our lives. Tony Horsfall - Parish Pump

SONGS AND TALES!

with Jonathan Veira

Our continuing series of the Bible Project is looking at 1 Corinthi-ans. Having come to appreciate God’s promises and our hope for the future through our study of Revelation, we look at the early church in Corinth and the guidance St Paul gave them. What does that say to us today? Many, if not all, of the challenges experienced in the early church are no different to those we face today. We will seek to grow as individuals and as a church in unity facing the mission of today and what it means to be followers of Jesus. Now we have lighter evenings there will only be meetings on Tuesdays, at 7.30pm.
