To mark Anti-Slavery day on Saturday 18th October, Soroptimist International Nottingham held an awareness raising event in Arnold (Notts). Members of the public were given copies of an awareness raising quiz and a lea� et ‘How to spot the signs of modern slavery’. � ey were asked to show their support by signing the Freedom Wall. � e event was attended by Vernon Coaker MP, the MP for Gedling and by the Mayor of Gedling, Councillor Jenny Hollingsworth and her consort. Vernon Coaker has been a strong supporter of the Freedom Wall events since 2010 and Councillor Hollingsworth showed a keen interest in the event and in the aims of Soroptimism.

Despite the abolition of slavery throughout the British Empire in 1833, there are an estimated 10 000 people in the UK living in conditions of slavery, and 30 million world-wide.

Care and Support at Home – Can 15-minute visits ever be long enough?

At Home Instead we are dedicated and committed to providing the type of service people need and deserve when they seek support in their homes. With a minimum of 1 hour visits we ensure that not only the agreed and necessary “tasks” get done but as important, we ensure the individual receives adequate support to maintain and if possible, enhance their physical and mental health.It was therefore not a surprise to hear last week of a report published by the Leonard Cheshire charity that referred to 15-minute visits for home care as “disgraceful”. � e report featured on BBC news and a number of other media organisations. � is gave rise to a debate between care organisations, supporting the view expressed in the report that 15-minute visits are unacceptable and local authority representatives who argue there is a place for them.� e Care minister Norman Lamb said that the government “can’t ban these short visits complete-ly” because they are useful in some circumstances, such as when a carer visits to give someone medicine. � e Association of Directors of Adult Social Services, which represents Local Authorities (not care managers as wrongly reported by the BBC), stated that short visits were “fully justi� ed and fully adequate”.

Interviews by the BBC included one with Tracey Currey, who was a care worker for two years but le� because her employer would not let her do more than the “bare minimum” for Clients. She said: “� ere was usually a care plan in place telling you what was needed at each visit but there was always more to do. What is a carer to do on arriv-ing for a 15-minute call to � nd the client soiled, confused and extremely distraught? What would the priorities be? To administer the medication as instructed, or to clean and change the client, or to make a hot drink and try to calm and reassure the client? All three in my book, but the present times do not allow for this.”

We understand the pressure local authorities are under to reduce their budgets and, knowing that social care is one of the largest areas of spend, how much e� ort is focused on reducing the care bill.

We know that as part of this e� ort many “re-assessments” of needs are carried out resulting in care “packages” being squeezed to a bare mini-mum. Unfortunately we can also see the impact all this has on people who are fully dependent on daily care and support.I would challenge any Director of Social Care, the Care Minister or indeed, anybody who believes that 15-minute visits are acceptable, to spend 1 week delivering care and support. We could make it just mornings so that it is not too hard for them. � ey would then understand the reality of caring for people rather than just trying to get in and out of somebody’s home as quickly as possible. � ey would realise that 15 minutes is a very short time. You might be able to park nearby, get into the individual’s home without a wait, � nd where they are (sometimes not at home…), whether they are awake or asleep, etc. You then need to ensure that they are � ne to take the medication (i.e. they are not ill, can swallow, etc.), and then dispense the correct medication from a bottle or blister pack, or other aid. Assuming the individual does not refuse (spits out meds or simply does not want to take them) you then need to record carefully what has been administered. All you need to do then is jump back in your car and put your foot down in order to get to the next person on your list!We will stick to our 1 hour visits. We believe in caring for people rather than just completing tasks.

A damp cloth on the back of the neck helps temperature regulation.• Recommend cold food, particularly salads and fruit with a high water content• Advise to drink regularly, preferably water or fruit juice but avoid alcohol and ca� eine (tea, co� ee))• Keep some cold water in the fridge. If you are visiting somebody, put some water in the fridge when you arrive and leave it within reach when you leave

Moon Over Soho by Ben Aaronovitch� is is the second in the ‘Rivers of London’ series, and if you’re looking for something a bit di� erent then it’s for you. � e book is essentially a detective story, but with the added twist of being based on the premise that magic is real. Peter Grant, the young policeman at the centre of the stories discovers that he can talk to ghosts, and is then taken under the wing of the enigmatic Nightingale, the last wizard in London who runs a very specialist and secret unit in the Met Police. � e characters are beautifully described and very easy to imagine, the relationships with other ‘specialist’ individuals are completely beliveable and a� er reading the � rst book, suspending your disbelief happens automatically. � e magical element naturally allows for more varied storylines, but the heart of the detective novel is still very well cra� ed and a really exciting story is still present. � e characters are intriguing and the desire to read on to the next book is very strong as you want to learn more about them – there are currently � ve books in the series, so roll on those dark winter nights…

Children’s ChoicePip and Posy and the Bedtime Frog byAxel Schelffl erPip and Posy are well loved characters in our house, and although on the surface they are for toddlers, the simple language and ‘real’ situations mean that once children start to read on their own the books remain popular. Pip and Posy are great friends beautifully illustrated by the legendary Axel Schel� er (of Gru� alo fame), they appear in seven quite short books about very speci� c situations that most tod-dlers will have experienced. � e Bedtime Frog, involves a sleep over with the trauma of a favourite toy having been forgotten – the pair then have to decide what to do as a suitable replacement. LETS BAKE!- CUSTARD TART

IngredientsFor the shortcrust pastry300g/10½oz plain � our, plus extra for � ouringpinch salt30g/1¼oz cold lard, cut into cubes (optional - you can use all butter if you prefer)85g/3oz cold butter, cut into cubes2-3 tbsp cold water1 free-range egg, beaten with a pinch of saltFor the white sauce30g/1¼oz butter30g/1¼oz � our600ml/1 pint milk3 tbsp double cream2 tsp Dijon mustard1/3 chicken stock cube, crumbledFor the ÿ lling2 large leeks30g/1½oz butter3 Cox apples, cored and cut into large pieces70g/2½ oz bacon lardons, or streaky bacon, diced10 boneless chicken thighs, diced1 bunch tarragon, leaves only (optional)freshly ground black pepper

Preparation methodFor the pastry, si� the � our and salt into a large mixing bowl.Add the lard and butter and, using your � ngertips, rub the fat into the � our until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs. Li� the � our into the air as you do so, to get some air into the mixture and keep it cool.Add just enough cold water to form a dough and mix together with a palette knife.� en, using your hands, bring the dough together in the bowl. Turn it out onto a clean, � oured work surface and knead brie� y. Shape it into a � attened circle and wrap it in cling � lm. Chill in the fridge for at least 20 minutes.While the pastry is chilling, make the white sauce. Melt the butter in a heavy-bottomed pan. Add the � our and stir with a wooden spoon over a medium heat for a minute or two, being careful not to burn it.Add the milk all at once. Take o� the heat and whisk the mixture with a balloon whisk. Once all the lumps are whisked in, place the pan back onto a medium heat and whisk continuously until the sauce comes to the boil and thickens.

A warming Chicken and Leek Pie for the cold evenings



Cook for another � ve minutes, stirring frequently with a wooden spoon. Add the double cream, mustard and the crumbled stock cube. Stir well, then allow to cool.For the � lling, top and tail the leeks. Slice them into thick rings and wash thoroughly in a bowl of clean water, to remove any grit. Heat a heavy-bottomed pan and place the leeks into the hot pan. Add the butter.Add the apples to the pan with the leeks and cook for a few minutes. Add the bacon lardons and the chicken pieces to the pan and cook for a few minutes longer (the chicken will be only about two-thirds cooked at this stage).Preheat the oven to 200C/400F/Gas 6. Place the chicken mixture into a pie dish. Sprinkle the tarragon leaves, if using, over the top. Season with freshly ground black pepper. Pour over the cooled white sauce.For the pastry top, allow the pastry to get up to room temperature. Lightly � our a clean board and roll out the pastry into a rectangle

about one-and-a-half times the size of the pie dish.With a knife, trim long, half-inch wide strips from the pastry. Use the trimmings to make an edge around the pie dish by brushing them with a bit of water (to help the pastry adhere) and placing them in a single layer around the outer edge of the pie dish.Using your rolling pin, li� the remaining pastry sheet and place it on top of the dish to form a lid. Trim around the edge of the pie dish with a knife to cut o� the excess pastry, reserving the trimmings. Use your � ngers and thumb to crimp the edges. Make a hole in the centre to allow the air to escape.Brush the top of the pastry with the beaten egg and salt wash. Use the reserved pastry trimmings to decorate the top.Place the pie on a baking tray and bake in the oven for 25-30 minutes until bubbling hot and golden. Serve while hot.LETS BAKE!- CUSTARD TART

To enjoy a festive evening of music, ranging from laid back swing to Latin grooves, join the Tony Farrell Big Band at the Rolls-Royce Pavilion, Moor Lane, Derby, DE24 9HY on Saturday 3rd January with music for dancing starting at 7:30pm through until 10:30pm. When you're not dancing the night away, you can relax in the comfortable and friendly atmosphere and enjoy the excellent food and refreshments. Tickets for the dance night are priced at £9 (£8 for Rolls-Royce Leisure Members) and are available on the door.

Tony Farrell has been running a Big Band for over 20 years. His desire to play this great music came about a ̨er playing in a local youth band. When local bandleader Paul Du Cane was ÿ nishing he kindly donated some of his music library which served as a platform for Tony to start his own big band. Rehearsal premises were found, musician friends were eager to play, new ar-rangements were added and PA equipment was acquired. Eventually a full big band complement was achieved and the band started to perform in 1991. ˝ e line up of 4 Trumpets, 4 Trombones, 5 Saxes, Piano, Bass, Drums, and op-tional Guitar is in keeping with the traditional bands from the swing era. Along with top class singers Keyth Andrews, Craig and Tashaka Baumber, ˝ e Tony Farrell Big Band has been a winner with audiences everywhere.



New Year's Ball � e band now plays a wide range of music for all types of events including conferences, weddings, 40’s theme nights, jazz concerts, Rat Pack nights etc. � e band has appeared with some of UK ‘s top musicians including Alan Barnes, Bruce Adams and Nathan Bray, and has performed at many venues across the East Midlands and in recent years, as their fame has spread, across the country.

˜ e Tony Farrell Big Band is non-proÿ t making and also supports local charities and worthwhile causes.
