This visual solution is created by manipulating and combining shape, colour, images, typography and space.


Graphic Design Elements

The five elements of lines, shapes, mass, texture, and color

are the building blocks of designfor desktop publishers


Lines

‣ Sometimes a designer uses a line alone to divide or unite elements on a page

‣ Lines can denote direction of movement (as in diagonal lines and arrows) or provide an anchor to hold elements on a page (such as lines at the top, bottom, or sides of a page)


Shapes

‣ Circle, square, and triangle are the three basic shapes used in graphic design

‣ The most familiar shape to desktop publishing is the square (and rectangle)

‣ Paper is rectangular. Most text blocks are square or rectangular ‣ While you may encounter printed projects cut into other shapes,

most circles, triangles, and freeform shapes in desktop publishedmaterials are found on the page within the graphics or in the way the elements are placed on the page

Mass

‣ Mass is size ‣ There is physical size and visual size ‣ Size can be relative ‣ A physically small brochure can have a great deal of mass

through the use of heavy text and graphic elements ‣ A physically large brochure can appear smaller, lighter

by using text and graphics sparingly

Texture

‣ For desktop publishing, actual texture is the feel of the paper ‣ Is it smooth to the touch or rough? ‣ Textures can also be visual. On the Web, especially,

backgrounds that simulate familiar fabrics, stone, and other textures are common


Color

‣ Color can be used to elicit specific emotions and reactions ‣ Red is typically thought of as an attention-grabbing, hot color ‣ Blues are more calming or convey stability

Some color combinations are used to create a specific identity(corporate colors, school colors) or may be used in conjunction with texture to simulate the look of other objects

‣ Color may provide cues for the reader

‣ Provides stability and structure to a design ‣ 3 types of balance in page design:

• symmetrical • asymmetrical • radial

Asymmetrical Layout The 2 columns of text are balanced by the blocks of color and a large block of white space

Radial Layout The year represents the center of the design with the subtle color sections radiating from that center


Proximity

‣ Keeping like items together‣ Creating unity

by how close or far apart elements are from each other


Alignment

‣ Alignment creates a sharper, more unified design ‣ Align text and graphics to create more interesting, dynamic,

or appropriate layouts

Repetition/Consistency

‣ Repetition unifies & strengthens a design by tying together otherwise separate parts

‣ Consistent and balanced look through different types of repetition


Contrast‣ Contrast is the most effective way to emphasize

and generate impact with a design ‣ There are some ways to create contrast and visual interest :

Big vs. small, black vs. white....etc.• Contrast in Value• Contrast in Shape• Contrast in Scale• Contrast in Movement/Direction• Contrast by Space

‣ The art of nothing is another description for this principle


Graphic Design Process

There are four major steps involved in graphic design:1. Briefing 2. Design 3. Artwork4. Production


The briefing stage may consist of either or both of

• Initial informal discussions between you, the client, and printer – covering project objectives, timing and budget.

• Formal meetings to discuss project in detail and clarify any technical issues including budget, timetable and corporate identity guidelines.


Development•The graphic designer reviews the brief, background

material and identity standards of the project context corporate requirements.

•Develops the draft concepts and preliminary designs and selects the most appropriate options for further development.


Presentation • The designer presents visual solutions

and explains design decisions.•Evaluate the visual presentation against the brief.

Refinement•Following clientʼs review and feedback,

the designer amends the material as required and,if necessary, presents with new design/s.


Artwork •Prepares the artwork files and provides a proof (email or

hardcopy)•A further proof is provided if required•Any “authorʼs corrections” (client requested changes to

content already provided which may include additional charges)


Production•The designer forwards the artwork to the printer• The designer views a bureau proof and passes the proof on

to the client for approval
