holidays, I better do it now. I could beselfish and request that Audi R8 V10Id like in the old present pile, but Ivedecided Id rather give to everyone andmake some requests that I would like tosee happen in the video games industry.

First on the list, console price cuts.Nothing gets more people playing con-sole games like making the cost o entrycheaper. Sony dropped the price o thePS3 to $249, which is a great start, butwe all know the magic number is $199,so lets go Sony and Microsof - let themasses get in on HD gaming.

Next up is new intellectual property(or IP). We all love the established giantranchises that dominate the market,but they were all new IP once, and theindustry can always use new blood

and new perspectives. Te big sequelsmake the world go round, but we neednew ideas to keep our fingers busy yearround.

I love first-person shooters as muchas the next guy, but I would reallylove to see some other genres get alittle more love (and yes, I realize thatconsumers need to do their part andbe more adventerous to make thishappen). Elder Scrolls is one o the ewRPGs hitting it out o the park thesedays on consoles, and its success showsthat people are willing to pay or greatexperiences in different genres. All youhave to do is be committed to makinggreat product.

And finally, one selfish request: Iwant my 2D Metroid in HD and Hal-Lie 3. Te wait or these two games iskilling me.

The studio got its startdeveloping spin-offs of the legendary Half-Life, portning Halo: combat Evolved to thePC with online multiplayer, and creating the World War II series Brothers in Arms.Gearbox dramatically broke out of its comfort zone with Borderlands, an inventivehybrid of slick FPS gameplay, lootgrabbing, and rpg progression. A

striking art style and absurd senseof humor made the exotic cocktail

Battleborn takes the minion smashing and ast leveling ofen

associated with MOBAs and injects it into an intergalactic firstperson battle arena. Te games dramatic story assembles auniverses worth o disparate heroes, rom an immortal samuraito a minigun-wielding giant, all battling over the last star in thecosmos. Te absurd premise blows open the doors or creativity,allowing the innovative minds at Gearbox to create a tremendousrogues gallery o playable characters.

BLEEDING GENRES ONCE AGAIN

We visited Gearboxs studio in Plano, exas to talk with thedevelopers about Battleborn and play the first announcedcompetitive match type or Game Inormers August cover story.We played hours o Incursion, an inventive 5 vs. 5 mode thatcombines ast-paced first-person gameplay with the strategicteambased elements o games like League o Legends and Dota2. Rival battleborn hunt one another in lush jungles and ariddeserts while robotic NPC minions wage an ongoing tug-o-war.Players start on a level playing field at the beginning o each match,progressing along a streamlined skill path up to level 20 filled withcustomizable abilities that unlock a variety o different play styles.Many o these gameplay elements will also bleed into Battlebornsfive-player cooperative campaign, which Gearbox isnt sayingmuch about yet.

A Massive RosterOf Playable Games

What Its Like: Gearbox likened thegames stable of playable charactersto the fighting-game genre, and the

comparison is apt; each hero notonly sports his or her own uniqueabilities, but the wildly differentthemes and aesthetics of Battlebornsgang of misfits reminded us moreof a Marvel vs. Capcom or MortalKombat than a shooter. MOBAs likeLeague of Legends and Dota 2 alsohave giant rosters of disparate and

unique characters, making it anotherobvious comparison point.Why Its Different: Many shooters

like Battlefield and eam Fortress 2feature different classes with uniqueabilities, but they pale in comparisonto Battleborns extreme sense of

variety. Te closest comparisonwould be Evolve, but unlike thehunters in urtle Rocks shooter ,

the characters in Battleborn arentjust limited to guns; melee-focusedcharacters like Rath and Phoebechange up the feel of battles and teamtactics even further. I played as five

Tanks to Borderlands, Gearboxs original IPare known as much for their art styles as theirgameplay. For Battleborn, the developer isonce again aiming for a distinctive look, onethat can accommodate the immense creativevariety present in the games universe-spanning cast of heroes. Join us as severalGearbox artists and animators walk usthrough some of Battleborns concept art and

explain why theyre excited to be workingon the new project. Battleborns art director,Scott Kester, was kind enough to provide histhoughts on several pieces of concept for the

game, which you can see below.Kester served as a characterconcept designer for thefirst two Borderlands gamesbefore taking the reins forBattleborn, and his commentsprovide great insight into thecreative process and goalsthat Gearboxs art team is striving

for. Weve also included quotes fromseveral other Gearbox designers andanimators, who we spoke to whilevisiting the studio. Battleborn does it!
