Grasping the Future ’08: a Challenge for Future Learning and Innovation is a conference held on 2nd of April (pre-event) and 1-3. of October at Wanha satama, Helsinki
Conference is organized by Wanha satama, OECD, Finnish National Board of Education and Finland Futures Research Centre
Sponsored by Nokia, Microsoft, WSOY, Elisa and Lemminkäinen
Grasping the Future ’08 Online is a social media service consisting of blogs, wikis and online presentations provided by Dicole Ltd. (provider of the online platform) and Humac Ltd. (provider of Adobe Connect Pro)
Background
Development
As the title of the conference reflects, we wanted to create a unique, non-traditional and technologically empowered event utilizing latest social media services
Wanha satama contacted Dicole Ltd. to discuss possible approaches to make the event stand out. Together we shared ideas and developed a plausible workshop methodology with the support of event sponsors
Learning Café (pre-event in April) is a highly participative format inspired by World Café where people sit on round tables. Participants can literarily write their notes on the table covers together and the main focus is on conversation
The event was moderated by Teemu Arina from Dicole Ltd.The day consisted of three sessions and a closing panel. All keynotes were recorded for web streaming purposes
Each session consisted of a keynote presentation (20 minutes) and four flash talks (6 minutes) and opportunities for conversation within the 16 tables (15-30 minutes each)
The task for each table was to define three key points arising from the table conversation on each session and blog the results to GTF’08 Online
Methodology
The closing panel discussed the themes arising from the conversations during the day
George Siemens from University of Manitoba, Canada was asked to comment on the online conversation through Adobe Connect Pro, an online conferencing solution
Each table had a Nokia N810 Internet Tablet that was configured to work with GTF’08 Online for blogging purposes and reading & commenting the contributions from other tables during the day (cross-table conversation)
Some participants recorded video podcasts or used Jaiku microblogging service to quickly share points arising from presentations with the rest of the world
