THE CITY

Photo: Graz Tourismus

Tasting and smelling - In Graz you can and should actually sample with all your senses: First of all, you shouldobviously use your sense of taste and smell, because in noother city is “Austria’s delicatessen” as omnipresent as itis here. Countless bars, coeehouses, wine bars, inns andrestaurants invite you to sample regional delicacies madewith products from the nearby Styrian culinary regions. The ideal starting point for culinary walks is one of the twocentrally located farmer’s markets where farmers fromthe surrounding area still actually sell their fresh productsthemselves.

Thanks to this close relationship to nature, southern light cooking dominates the kitchens in Graz in summerwhereas the nearby mountains and traditional alpinecuisine play a role in winter. This interplay alsocorresponds to that between easy summer living in thenumerous outdoor dining establishments in the city.

Hearing and seeing - The oer of the cultural capital of Graz is also devoted to an abundance of sights andsounds. For example, there is the historic old town centerat the foot of the Schlossberg with its city palaces, churches, private townhouses and archetypal buildings. The romance of the Renaissance accounts for a good partof the southern air that both locals and visitors cherish somuch about this city.

Yet what’s really typical of Graz is its old town for a completely dierent reason: Time and again, the historical

architecture is disrupted by contemporary buildings suchas the striking “Kunsthaus” art exhibition center in Graz, also referred to as the “friendly alien”. A type of art ispresented here which one seems to master condently inGraz: the interweaving of tradition and modernity into anew form composed with an ever-assured sense of style.

Thus, the city appears lively and constantly in motion with regard to all cultural aspects not only in its architecture, but in music, theater, literature, design and the ne arts. This can also be demonstrated by the wide range offestivals such as styriarte, La Strada, steirischer herbstand Elevate, which appeal to a diverse audiencethroughout the year, yet share the same high standard ofquality.

Farmer’s Market on Kaiser-Josef-Platz

In former times theKaiser-Josef-Square used tobe a timber-market.Today thepeople of Graz rather think ofculinary delights than ofhistory when they talk about

this market. Fresh local products are oered by their producers on a daily basis. Many products are grownorganically and some of them have a long standing

tradition such as the "Käferbohne" (special kind of largebeans), apples and of course the pumpkinseed oil.Monday-Saturday 6AM to 1PM

Cathedral

Today’s cathedral reminds ofthe days when Graz was animperial city. EmperorFrederick III erected thechurch together with his newresidence in Graz. In the

course of history, the cathedral saw many changes. Construction work of the court and parish church inlate-Gothic style was started in 1438, as Jesuit church itwas refurbished in Baroque style in the late 17th and early18th centuries. Since 1786 it has been the cathedral.

A wall-tattoo on Herrengassestreet? Sure! On the façade ofthe Herzoghof building in thecentre of Graz, Greek andRoman Gods engage in arendez-vous. The building was

rst painted as early as 1600. The Baroque painter JohannMayer applied the ‘divine’ frescos in 1742, since whichtime it has been known as the ‘painted house’. If you takea moment to immerse yourself in the images, you enjoyan intense sense of submersion right there in the middleof the urban hustle and bustle.
