Prophetic News Parade

T HE year 1960 will go down inhistory as one of the most

dramatic in the 20th century.Within the year, the President o fthe United States visited most o fthe far-flung nations of earth onmissions of peace and good will.Also in 1960 Nikita Khrusche vdid an equal amount of travelin g"to and fro," including a visit t othe United States, also apparentl yin the interests of peace—commu -nist peace, that is . PresidentEisenhower was asked not tomake his proposed visit to Japan,and Khruschev cancelled the in-vitation for him to visit Russia .

This has also bccn the year i nwhich carefully laid plans weremade for a "summit conference, "only to have it torpedoed beforeit really got started . It is theyear in which disarmament talksin Geneva broke down, and themany representatives of nationsparticipating therein went home .

In these and various other waysthe "cold war" has continued andtensions have increased . Th e

prophecies of the Bible which arein course of fulfilment have bee nbrought into clearer focus by thedramatic developments of 1960 ,so that as we approach the endof the year we can be more cer-tain than ever that we are livingin the "last days," "the day ofthe Lord," the time of the Mas-ter's second presence .

The prophetic increase ofknowledge and running to and frohas been accelerated during theyear. In America jet plane travelhas become general . The forecastsare that the present jet planes ,which fly at the incredible speedof 600 miles an hour will, not to olong hence, seem slow as com-pared with the much faster onesbeing planned. This is a furthertoken of the marvelous manner inwhich Daniel's prophecy of run-ning to and fro continues to b efulfilled, and to an extent thateven students of prophecy wouldhave found very difficult to imag-ine at the turn of the century .Then, even the fifty or sixty mile s

an hour attained by railway trainsseemed almost miraculous .

And the increase of knowledg ealong general lines keeps pac ewith the "running to and fro ." Weused to speak of "labor-savin gmachinery," now it is automation .Electronics are being applied todo almost numberless things for-merly done only by human hand sand brains. This is true in offices,in banks, in factories, in the home.

In the field of communication1960 has been a memorable year .We have become accustomed toradio and television, but this yeara metallic ball was put into orbitaround the earth which is use das a "bouncer" for TV signals .Television signals, unlike radiosignals, will travel only from thei rsource to the horizon, hence th euse of high towers, and the instal-lation of these towers on the high -est terrain possible .

But now the first experimentshave been made in sending tele-vision signals upward and hav ethem bounced back to earth fro ma metal ball in orbit around th eearth. It works, and the details o foperation need only to be refined ,and then world-wide television,without the need of relay station sor the present coaxial cables, willbe possible . This is a marvelou sstep forward in a field that i salready well-nigh in the realm o fthe miraculous .

IN THE world of nations 196 0has been one of development an dalso crises. A whole group of smal lnations in Africa gained theirindependence during 1960, andmost of them were admitted a sfull fledged members of theUnited Nations . This marked afurther whittling down of some ofthe former empires of earth, suc has the Belgian and British, hencea further crumbling of thos eworld powers depicted by Nebu-chadnezzar's vision .—Dan. 2:3145

Nigeria, with a population ofthirty-five million, was the thirdto gain its independence fromGreat Britain in 1960 ; and theninth since the close of the lastWorld War . Like the Congo, Ni-geria is a country of many tribe sand clans. How well these newl yestablished nations will use theirnew-found "liberty" is a matterof grave concern to the Westernnations . The people of the BelgianCongo, it is reported, were not atall prepared for their new respon-sibilities .

The rapidity with which theworld scene is changing, particu-larly with respect to the birth ofnew nations, is high-lighted b yreports of map makers . They saythat while they can be reasonablysure that Africa's rivers, moun-tains, and oceans will not change ,this is not so with respect to itspolitical boundaries . "We have to

be avid newspaper readers to seeif yesterday's work is still good,"observed one map maker.

While small nations in Africawere being born, political and re-ligious unrest in South Americ abrought that vast continent promi-nently into the news during th eyear. Here communist forces areendeavoring to establish a bridge -head from which to promotetheir interests in the Wester nHemisphere . Cuba, under the dic-tatorial control of Castro, enter sinto this situation to a degreethat is quite disturbing to th eWestern world .

These were all situations withwhich the United Nations organi-zation was properly concerned.Most of the new nations wer emade members of the UN at asession of the General Assemblywhich began on Monday, Septem-ber 26. There came to New Yorkfor this occasion the greatestnumber of representatives of na-tions, many of them heads o fstate, ever before assembled inthe experience of man.

The powerful leaders of boththe East and the West were there.It was a General Assembly meet-ing of the "United Nations," bu tthe nations were not united. Thetwo main divisions were the com-munist and the noncommunistblocs. Then there was the so-calledneutral bloc, which was aug-mented to a considerable extentby the new nations from Africa .

World disarmament was thechief item for consideration, butthere was so little atmosphere ofgood will among the "blocs" tha tnothing could be accomplished .This animosity did not develo pspontaneously . It had been build-ing up for a long time, and par-ticularly from the failure of the"summit conference" earlier inthe year . The nations had builttheir hope on this conference,although it was a slim hope . Thecommunists had wanted it, andthe noncommunists agreed to it.But what has come to be know nas the "U2" spy incident wasused by Nikita Khruschev towreck the conference before itgot started .

And Khruschev came to theGeneral Assembly meeting of theUnited Nations to further wagehis cold war tactics against th eWest . He boisterously urged dras-tic changes in the UN setup, andinsisted on the admission of Re dChina into the organization, refus-ing to discuss disarmament unles sthese proposals were adopted . Heeven threatened to withdraw thecommunist bloc of nations fromthe UN unless he could have hi sway .

Of necessity, this resulted in avery stormy session of the Gen-eral Assembly, which preclude dall possibility of fruitful discus-sions on the subject of world dis-

armament. This was very muchin keeping with the situation fore -told by the prophecies of theBible. We read, "Why do theheathen [or, Gentiles] rage [mar-gin, "tumultuously assemble"] andthe people imagine a vain thing? "(Ps . 2 :1) Verse 4 reads, "He thatsitteth in the heavens shall laugh :the Lord shall have them in deri-sion . "

The Prophet Isaiah wrote, "Th eambassadors of peace shall weepbitterly." (Isa . 33 :7) In principle ,at least, this well describes th edisappointment that must be ex-perienced by the representativesof those nations who so earnestlydesire to see the world at peace ,yet have their every effort towardthat end come to naught. These"ambassadors of peace" have no tyet learned that human wisdo mis incapable of finding an ade-quate and lasting solution to theproblems created by human self-ishness, and that the human racewill be saved from destructio nonly by divine intervention .

Jehovah said, "I have set myKing upon my holy hill of Zion .Ask of me, and I shall give theethe heathen for thine inheritance ,and the uttermost parts of theearth for thy possession . Thoushalt break them with a rod o firon; thou shalt dash them inpieces like a potter's vessel ." (Ps.2 :6, 8, 9) The time is here forJehovah's King on symboli cMount Zion, to take control o f

earth's affairs . This is the reasonthat all human efforts, and hu-manly constituted authority mustfail. If "the ambassadors of peace"knew this, they would rejoice in-stead of "weep . "

Two Effort s

THE prophecies of the Bibl eclearly foretold the efforts of thenations in these "last days" tounite for their own protection ,and to stabilize the disintegratingsocial order . Isaiah 8:9, 10 reads ,"Associate yourselves, 0 yepeople, and ye shall be broke nin pieces ; and give ear, all ye offar countries : gird yourselves, an dye shall be broken in pieces . Takecounsel together, and it shal lcome to nought; speak the word ,and it shall not stand . "

The fact that the assertion ,"Gird yourselves, and ye shall bebroken in pieces," is repeated ,may be merely for emphasis . Onthe other hand, it could suggest ,that in the end of the age therewould be two major efforts of thi skind, such as we have seen in th eLeague of Nations and the UnitedNations . We know that the Leagu eof Nations was "broken in pieces, "and now shattering blows ar ebeing directed against the Unite dNations by the communist world .This has become distressinglyapparent to the noncommunis tworld in these closing months o f1960 .

associates the gathering of thenations with the returning cap-tivity "of Judah and Jerusalem"—a reference to the return of th eIsraelites to their Promised Land .But here the gathering is indi-cated to be more for war tha nfor peace. This is indicated late rin the chapter, where we read ,"Proclaim ye this among the Gen -tiles ; Prepare war, wake up themighty men, let all the men ofwar draw near ; let them comeup. Beat your plowshares intoswords, and your pruninghooksinto spears: let the weak say, Iam strong ."—vss. 9, 1 0

Never before in the experienc eof man has there been such uni-versal preparation for war . True ,it is not called that. The nationsare impoverishing themselves inthe building of arms in order to"keep the peace ." Doubtless manyof the world's leaders are sincerein this viewpoint, but this metho dof maintaining peace has neve rbeen successful in the past, norwill it be successful now .

"Let the weak say, I am strong, "Joel wrote. This detail o fprophecy is having a very accu-rate fulfilment . Note the varioussmall nations and peoples un-afraid to demand rights, andothers who are displaying theirmilitary might . Perhaps th eclassic example of this in 196 0has been little Cuba. Castro's ar-rogant attitude probably stems i npart from his hope that the large r

communist powers will come t ohis aid should he need their help .

Indeed, all the small nationswhich today are asserting them -selves in the international scen erealize that in the event of thei rbeing attacked some of the morepowerful nations will come totheir aid. This is true whetherthey are associated with the com-munist or the noncommunist bloc .But herein lies a grave danger,for it means that an unwise atti-tude or procedure on the part ofsome small nation could lead t oglobal war and to the horror sthat such a struggle would inflictupon humanity.

Israe l

THE little nation of Israel hascontinued to struggle on in aworld of conflict. One of th eprophecies which is being fulfilledin the experiences of this favore dpeople of God is Ezekiel 20 :33-35 .We quote :

"As I live, saith the Lord God,surely with a mighty hand, andwith a stretched out arm, and wit hfury poured out, will I rule ove ryou. And I will bring you out fromthe people, and will gather you outof the countries wherein ye arescattered, with a mighty hand, andwith a stretched out arm, and withfury poured out. And I will brin gyou into the wilderness of thepeople, and there will I plead withyou face to face ."

How true it is of the Israelites ,that while a million and a hal f

of them have been brought "ou tfrom the people," and from th ecountries wherein they were scat-tered, so far as security andpeace are concerned they are stillin "the wilderness of the people. "They are sharing in the turmoilof the world, and their hearts ar efilled with fear, even as it is tru eof the Gentiles .

But the trials, the tensions, th estrains, through which they ar epassing are the means by whichthe Lord is "pleading" with them ,a pleading which will continueuntil they recognize his hand intheir affairs . The use of the wor d"wilderness" in this prophecy re-minds us of Israel's exodus fro mEgypt . Their destiny then was th eland of Canaan, but the Lord per-mitted them to remain in the wil-derness for a long time .

And so it is today . Their returnto the Promised Land is not allthat God has designed for his an-cient people. Even though manyof them are now in the land, sofar as security is concerned, theyare still in the "wilderness," an dwill be in that condition until b ythe Lord's "pleadings" they cometo know him, and accept the lov-ing provision of life he has madefor them through Jesus, who mthey will then gladly acknowledgeas their Messiah.

The Lord further said, throughEzekiel : "Like as I pleaded withyour fathers in the wilderness o f

the land of Egypt, so will I plea dwith you, saith the Lord God. An dI will cause you to pass underthe rod, and I will bring you int othe bond [margin, delivering] o fthe covenant."—Ezek . 20:36, 3 7

The reference here seems to b eto God's promised New Covenant,which is to be made "with th ehouse of Israel, and with thehouse of Judah." (Jer. 31 :31-34)We rejoice in this ultimate ob-ject of God's design for Israel . Itis reassuring to spiritual Israelat this time to recognize God'shand in the affairs of naturalIsrael, even before the Hebrewpeople themselves realize wha tthe Lord is doing for them.

It would be difficult to select asingle outstanding experience ofIsrael during 1960, and say thatthis fulfils such and such aprophecy . Nor could we say thatthe jet plane alone fulfils Dan-iel's prophecy of running to an dfro . The prophecies which fore-cast the major world develop-ments in this "day of the Lord "seldom refer to a single event,but to the significance of all theevents along a particular line ;and as we have watched the hap-penings of 1960, our faith in th enearness of the kingdom has bee nstrengthened. So we lift up ourheads and rejoice, knowing tha tour deliverance is near, and alsothe deliverance of the wholeworld from sin and death .

ral Israel, another prophet wrote ,"They like Adam have trans-gressed the covenant ." (Hosea 6 :7 ,margin) God's promise of the NewCovenant, therefore, calls for arestoration to the original perfec-tion in which Adam was created .It is one of the promises of "resti-tution" which Peter declared hadbeen spoken by all God's holyprophets . (Acts 3 :19.21) While ini-tially made with Israel, the bless-ings of the New Covenant will b eextended to the whole world o fmankind .

ROMANS 8 :1, 2, 38, 3 9THE New Covenant of Jere-

miah 31:31-34 is not made withthe followers of Jesus. However,in the making of the New Cove-nant Jesus will be the Mediator,and his faithful followers of thi sage will be associated with him i nthat future work . For this reasonPaul speaks of them as bein g"able ministers of the New Testa-ment, or New Covenant ."—II Cor.3 :6-10

The divine principles of right-eousness which will be taught tothe people during the kingdo mage are being implanted in thehearts of those who are now suf-fering and dying with Jesus i norder that they might live an dreign with him. This is a neces-sary preparation to be ministers ,or servants, of the New Covenant .These are also referred to as"epistles of Christ." The tables ofstone on which the original La w

of the mosaic covenant was writ-ten could be referred to as theepistles of Moses ; but the churc hwill be associated with Christ i nthe administration of the law ofthe New Covenant, writing it i nthe inward parts and in the heart sof the people.—II Cor. 3 : 3

God can deal with us in connec-tion with this preparatory workonly because our relationship wit hhim is through Christ, and be -cause we are "in Christ ." Being"in Christ," and covered with therobe of his righteousness, we havea "no condemnation" standingwith our Heavenly Father, and hecontinues to lead us by his Spirit ,through his Word. The Spiri tleads us as it did Jesus, in th eway of sacrifice, even unto death .

But this is not an easy way. Towalk in it entails wearisome toil,opposition from the world, th eflesh, and the Devil, persecutionand affliction. But God's lov eovershadows and protects us . Be-cause of this we are persuaded, a sPaul observed, that nothing willbe able to separate us from "thelove of God, which is in ChristJesus our Lord. "

16YMBOLICALLY speaking, theentire period of the reign o f

sin and death, beginning in Eden ,has been one of darkness, a night -time of suffering and weeping.David wrote, "Weeping may en-dure for a night, but joy comethin the morning ." (Ps. 30:5) The"morning" of earth's new day willbe ushered in by the rising o f"the Sun of righteousness withhealing in his wings."—Mal. 4 : 2

The people generally through -out all this long night of weepinghave walked in darkness, in thesense that they have not knownGod or his loving plan for th eultimate blessing of all the fami-lies of the earth. That was trueof the Israelites at the time ofour Lord's first advent, althoug hprofessedly they were the peopl eof God .

As Isaiah foretold, a "grea tlight" then appeared in the per-son of Jesus Christ . Only a few at

that time recognized Jesus as "th elight of the world ." (John 8:12)Israel as a nation did not . Thereligious leaders of the time hatedthe light, and put the Light-bearerto death. Jesus' ambassadors havesince continued to shine as lightsin the world .—Matt . 5 :1 4

Zacharias referred to Jesus asthe "sunrising" (margin), wh ocame in fulfilment of Isaiah 9 :2 .(Luke 1 :78) While he came int othe world humbly, as a babe, h ewas destined to be, not only th egreat Light-giver of the world ,but also one who would be mightyto save and to rule. The "govern-ment," the long-promised king-dom of the Messiah, was to b eon his shoulder.

We prefer the translation ofthis text which omits the comm abetween "Wonderful" and "Coun-sellor," making this one title ,"Wonderful Counsellor." Just howwonderful Jesus will be as a"counsellor" and judge is ex-plained by Isaiah in chapter 11 ,

verses 2 to 4 : "The Spirit of theLord shall be upon him, thespirit of wisdom and understand-ing, the spirit of counsel andmight, the spirit of knowledgeand of the fear of the Lord; andshall make him of quick under-standing in the fear of the Lord :and he shall not judge after thesight of his eyes, neither reprov eafter the hearing of his ears : butwith righteousness shall he judg ethe poor, and reprove [margin, or,argue] with equity for the mee kof the earth . "

Jesus will also be "The mightyGod"—not The Almighty, bu tnevertheless a mighty God whomthe people will worship becauseof what he has done for them ,and to whom they will rende robedience. Every knee will bo wto him, and this will be to th eglory of God .—Phil . 2 :9-1 1

In addition, Jesus will be "Theeverlasting Father"—not theHeavenly Father, but the On ethrough and by whom life will b egiven to all the willing and obe-dient of the millennial, or king-dom age . The word "Father"—de-notes life-giver.

"The Prince of Peace" is an -other title which Isaiah ascribesto Jesus . He is the One who wil lestablish peace on earth . And i tis through him also that peacebetween God and men will bebrought about . Apart from thi srelationship between God and hi s

human creatures there couldnever be peace among men .

Verse 7 reminds us that the"government" which Jesus cameto establish will be an antityp eof the kingdom of Israel as it wasestablished in the family of Da-vid . The angel Gabriel announce dthis to Mary when he told herthat she would be the mother ofJesus .—Luke 1 :30-33

GALATIANS 4:4-7 explains thatit was in the "fulness of the time"that Jesus was born. Every fea-ture of God's plan is carried outin his "due time ." There is neverany delay, although in our impa-tience we often long to see th edivine plan develop more rapidly .It was necessary that Jesus b emade flesh to redeem the fallenhuman race from death . It wasalso necessary that he be bornunder the Law, that he might re -deem those under the Law . Paulspeaks of the privilege of becom-ing the Sons of God, not by "adop-tion," as the King James Versionstates, but by the begetting of theHoly Spirit .

c HE compassion of Jesus was a1~J. compelling influence in hi slife of sacrifice on behalf of th eworld of mankind. Standing withmourners near the tomb of Laza-rus, "Jesus wept . " (John 11 :35)When Jesus took his disciples toa "desert place to rest a while, "he found a "great multitude" ofpeople waiting for him, and hewas "moved with compassiontoward them, and he healed theirsick."—Matt . 14 :13, 14 ; Mark 10 :3 1

The commission given to Jesu sby the Holy Spirit to "preach goodtidings unto the meek," and t o"bind up the brokenhearted" wasnot burdensome to the Master . Hiscompassionate heart of love de -lighted in radiating joy and com-fort to the people whenever andwherever he could . For this rea-son he was also glad to proclaimthat in God's due time those hel dcaptive by sin would be givenliberty, and that those held in thegreat prison house of death woul dbe released. This was indee d"good tidings," and this Gospel

of coming blessings for all man -kind was proclaimed faithfully byJesus. The loving-kindness of hi sHeavenly Father was not con-cealed in his heart, but was mad eknown to the "great congrega-tion ."—Ps . 40 :9, 10

The "robe of righteousness "with which we are covered wasprovided by Christ . It is his right-eousness, imputed to us throughfaith. Wearing this robe, we ar elooked upon by our Heavenly Fa-ther as perfect, and therefore ac-ceptable to be joint-sacrificerswith Jesus . We lay down our live sas he did, in proclaiming the goodtidings of the kingdom . To be ac-ceptable to God our work mustbe prompted by love and compas-sion, even as it was with Jesus.

Jesus' invitation is, "Come unt ome, all ye that labor and ar eheavy laden, and I will give yo urest ." The first application of thiswas to those burdened under th eweight of the Law of Moses, an dby the traditions of men as taughtin the Jewish Talmud . But all whorecognize their sinful condition ,and long for righteousness, areburdened and heavy laden . Andhow sweet the assurance thatJesus will give us rest of mindand heart !

Accepting Jesus' invitation, andentering into the rest which heprovides, does not imply releas efrom all responsibility. Relievedof the burden of sin, Jesus invitesus to take his "yoke," to be boun dtogether with him in the holyservice of his Father's plan. It isonly in this way that we can hop eto find joyful rest for our souls .

His yoke is easy and his burde nis light for us because of his help .His yoke and burden are noteasy and light because there i slittle to do in the service of theLord, for there is much to do.

And, if we truly appreciate theprivilege we have of being yoke -fellows with Jesus, we will realizethat there is the weighty respon-sibility upon us of being faith-ful—faithful even unto death .

Our "rest" in Jesus is a res tof faith in his shed blood. Weknow that we do not have to earnsalvation through our own works .Such a futile attempt would be aheavy burden indeed. But we areto labor in the Lord's vineyard.We are to proclaim good tiding sto the meek, and to participate inall the various activities for whichJesus was anointed, for, as wehave seen, that same anointing i supon his followers . T HE expression, "unspeakabl e~J. gift," as used by Paul in ourGolden Text, simply denote sPaul's inability adequately to de -scribe all the virtues of Jesus, an dall that he means to us and tothe world as the gift of God'slove . eUR text is a prayer by Moses for the preservation of th echildren of Israel, and the fulfilment of God's promise t o

their fathers to give them the land of Canaan . There is a reveal-ing background to this prayer. While Moses was in the mountreceiving the Law from God, the Israelites, under the temporaryleadership of Aaron, had set up a golden calf to worship, an dwere indulging in other gross sins .

Then "the Lord said unto Moses, Go, get thee down ; for thypeople, which thou broughtest out of the land of Egypt, have cor-rupted themselves ." To this the Lord added, "I have seen thi speople, and, behold, it is a stiffnecked people . Now therefor elet me alone, that my wrath may wax hot against them, and tha tI may consume them : and I will make of thee a great nation ."—Exod. 32:7, 9, 10

Moses' prayer was, in effect, a request for the Lord to recon-sider his decision to destroy the Israelites as a people, remindinghim of his promise to the fathers concerning the land. The Lordrespected the wishes of Moses, and the Israelites were not de-stroyed. After forty years of wandering in the wilderness the ydid enter into the Promised Land, although because of theirdisobedience they later lost possession of it .

Moses foretold this loss of the land. We quote, "I call heave nand earth to witness against you this day, that ye shall soo nutterly perish from off the land whereunto ye go over Jorda nto possess it ; ye shall not prolong your days upon it, but shal lutterly be destroyed . And the Lord shall scatter you among the

nations, and ye shall be left few in number among the heathen ,whither the Lord shall lead you ."—Deut . 4 :26, 27

Continuing this prophecy, Moses said to the Israelites, "Whenthou art in tribulation, and all these things are come upon thee ,even in the latter days, if thou turn to the Lord thy God, andshalt be obedient unto his voice ; (for the Lord thy God is a mer-ciful God;) he will not forsake thee, neither destroy thee, norforget the covenant of thy fathers which he sware unto them ."—vss . 30, 3 1

Here is a prophecy embracing more than three thousand year sof time, which, in the light of history, is seen to be remarkabl yaccurate . The Israelites were uprooted from their land for sev-enty years during the Babylonian captivity, and again when thenation was destroyed by Titus, and the people scattered . Thiswas a scattering among many nations, and as Moses indicate din his prophecy, it was to continue until the "latter days . "

Moses projects the prophetic picture slightly beyond the pres-ent, to a time when the Lord's full blessing will be showere dupon the Israelites in response to their turning to him, andseeking him with all their heart and all their soul . The Lord'sreturning favor upon his people will be based upon his mercy ,Moses explains, and because he will not forget the covenan twhich he made with their fathers .

Moses' prophecy pertains, not to the faithful remnant of Israel-ites in each generation of that typical people, but to the man ywho failed to qualify for the special rewards which faithfulnessand obedience would bring to those who received the testimon ythat they pleased God . The climax of unfaithfulness on the partof Israel as a whole came at the time of Jesus' first advent . Itwas their rejection of him as their Messiah that led to thei rscattering among the nations .

The "Election "IN THE 11th chapter of Romans Paul makes some enlighten-

ing observations as to just what happened at that time, and whatGod proposes to do about it . First he asks the question, "HathGod cast away his people?" Answering this, Paul says ,

"God forbid . For I also am an Israelite, of the seed of Abraham ,

of the tribe of Benjamin. God hath not cast away his peoplewhich he foreknew. Wot ye not what the Scripture saith of Elias?how he maketh intercession to God against Israel, saying, Lord ,they have killed thy prophets, and digged down thine altars ; andI am left alone, and they seek my life . But what saith the answe rof God unto him? I have reserved to myself seven thousand men ,who have not bowed the knee to the image of Baal . Even s onow at this present time also there is a remnant according t othe election of grace . . . . What then? Israel [as a nation] hath no tobtained that which he seeketh for; but the election [that is ,the elect remnant of faithful ones within the nation] hath ob-tained it, and the rest were blinded [margin, hardened] ."—Rom. 11 :1-7

Paul explains that all those not of the "election," or elect clas swere, as branches, broken off from an olive tree, and that be-lieving Gentiles were being grafted into the tree to take theplaces of the unbelieving Israelites. Later in the chapter Paulexplains that these cast off branches, or unbelieving Israelites ,will have mercy shown toward them, and that "all Israel" shallbe saved .—vs . 26

Actually the whole nation of Israel were an elect people, spe-cially chosen of the Lord . Moses said to those of his generation ,"Thou art an holy people unto the Lord thy God : the Lord thyGod hath chosen thee to be a special people unto himself, aboveall people that are upon the face of the earth . The Lord did notset his love upon you, nor choose you, because ye were morein number than any people ; for ye were the fewest of all people :but because the Lord loved you, and because he would keepthe oath which he had sworn unto your fathers, hath the Lordbrought you out with a mighty hand, and redeemed you out o fthe house of bondmen, from the land of Pharaoh king of Egypt . "—Deut . 7 :6-8

It is this general "election," or choosing of the people ofIsrael, that Paul referred to when he wrote, "As concerning th eGospel, they are enemies for your sakes : but as touching theelection, they are beloved for the fathers' sakes . For the giftsand calling of God are without repentance ." (Rom. 11:28, 29)Yes, "for the fathers' sakes"—through whom all Israel becam e

God's chosen people—he has made provision to bless even theunbelieving among them—not, however, in their unbelief, butwhen their sin of unbelief is removed .

And God has made a wonderful provision for taking away th esin of his unbelieving people . It is the provision of the New Cove-nant foretold in Jeremiah 31 :31-34. Jesus will be the Mediatorof this New Covenant, and associated with him will be the elec tspiritual Israelites of the Gospel Age . Together these are referre dto as the "Deliverer," and Paul wrote, "There shall come out ofSion the Deliverer, and shall turn away ungodliness from Jaco b[Israel] : for this is my covenant unto them [the New Covenant] ,when I shall take away their sins ."—Rom. 11:26, 27

A glance at the promise of the New Covenant reveals how far -reaching it will be in removing the sins of those who are brough tinto relationship with the Lord under its terms . The Lord said ,"I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in theirhearts ; and will be their God, and they shall be my people . Andthey shall teach no more every man his neighbor, and every manhis brother, saying, Know the Lord : for they shall all know me ,from the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith the Lord :for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sinno more."—Jer. 31:33, 34

This is God's provision for unbelieving Israelites . It is a pro -vision of his mercy extended through Jesus, their Redeemer fromsin, and the Redeemer of all mankind . Paul further wrote con-cerning the Israelites, "God hath concluded them all in unbelief ,that he might have mercy upon all ." (Rom. 11:32) No wonderPaul observed, "0 the depth of the riches both of the wisdom an dknowledge of God! how unsearchable are his judgments, and hi sways past finding out ."—vs . 33

Nor is God's provision for the Israelites, who failed to obtai na good report through faith, limited to those of any one genera-tion. This provision of mercy is on behalf of the wayward an dunbelieving of every generation . Paul explains how . He said ,"What shall the receiving of them be, but life from the dead? "(Rom. 11 :15) Thus again we are reminded of the importance o fthe resurrection in the outworking of the divine plan for Israe land for the world . For the Israelites it means that God's mercy

when the house of Israel dwelt in their own land, they defile dit by their own way and by their doings : their way was befor eme as the uncleanness of a removed woman . Wherefore I poure dmy fury upon them for the blood that they had shed upon theland, and for their idols wherewith they had polluted it : and Iscattered them among the heathen, and they were disperse dthrough the countries : according to their way and according totheir doings I judged them ."—vss . 16-19

Nor was the conduct of this people any more praiseworth yafter they had been driven out of their own land . Concernin gthis the Lord explained, "When they entered unto the heathen ,whither they went, they profaned my holy name, when they saidto them, These are the people of the Lord, and are gone forthout of the land. But I had pity for mine holy name, which thehouse of Israel had profaned among the heathen, whither theywent ."—vss . 20, 21

Then follows the Lord's explanation of his motive in restorin ghis people to their own land . We quote, "Therefore say unto thehouse of Israel, Thus saith the Lord God ; I will not do this fo ryour sakes, 0 house of Israel, but for mine holy name's sake ,which ye have profaned among the heathen, whither ye went .And I will sanctify my great name, which was profaned amon gthe heathen, which ye have profaned in the midst of them ; andthe heathen shall know that I am the Lord, saith the Lord God ,when I shall be sanctified in you before their [margin, your]eyes ."—vss . 22, 23

The Lord then promises to restore his people to their ow nland, and adds, "Then will I sprinkle clean water upon you ,and ye shall be clean: from all your filthiness, and from all youridols, will I cleanse you . A new heart also will I give you, an da new spirit will I put within you : and I will take away thestony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart o fflesh. And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to wal kin my statutes, and ye shall keep my judgments, and do them .And ye shall dwell in the land that I gave to your fathers ; andye shall be my people, and I will be your God ."—vss. 25-28The Valley of Dry Bone s

the Lord had already commissioned Ezekiel to say to the hous eof Israel, and a further assurance that he would restore themto their own land, and that this land would become "like th eGarden of Eden ." (Vs. 35) Then, in chapter 37, Ezekiel record swhat he saw in a marvelous vision which the Lord gave to him.This was the vision in which the prophet saw a valley of dr ybones, with the explanation that "these bones are the whol ehouse of Israel ."—vs . 1 1

Ezekiel hears the whole house of Israel say, "Our bones aredried, and our hope is lost: we are cut off from our parts ." ThenEzekiel was authorized to say to the house of Israel, "Thus saiththe Lord God ; Behold, 0 my people, I will open your graves ,and cause you to come up out of your graves, and bring youinto the land of Israel . And ye shall know that I am the Lord ,when I have opened your graves, 0 my people, and brought yo uup out of your graves, and shall put my spirit in you, and y eshall live, and I shall place you in your own land : then shall y eknow that I the Lord have spoken it, and performed it, saith th eLord ."—vss . 12-14

This is not a promise of the resurrection of the dead, but a nassurance that the Israelites were to be gathered from the landswherein they were scattered, and that God's spirit would b epoured out upon them. Earlier in the chapter, Ezekiel describe sthe progressive steps in this work of restoration, as he sees i tportrayed in the vision . The bones come together, flesh appear son the bones, and finally the breath is given . (vss . 1-8) The Lordsaid to Ezekiel, "Prophesy unto the wind [margin, breath], proph-esy, son of man, and say to the wind, Thus saith the Lord God ;Come from the four winds, 0 breath, and breathe upon thes eslain, that they may live ."—vs . 9

Now the Due Tim eMANY prophecies reveal that we are now living in the begin-

ning of the "latter days" foretold by Moses when the Israelite swould be restored to the Promised Land . Undoubtedly this isthe true significance of what we have seen taking place in Pales -tine during this generation. There have been various progressivesteps in the occupation of the land by the Israelites, and thes econtinue. However, the symbolic "four winds" have not yet

blown upon them, so, they have not yet been given the Lord' sSpirit, and from the Lord's standpoint, do not yet have life .

Indeed, as yet, the Israelites have only part of the Promise dLand. We do not yet see the prophecies of their restoration tothe land completely fulfilled, but we do see the beginning of thei rfulfilment . This means that we are living in a momentous perio dof the divine plan. It is a time when, before our eyes, we seethe beginning of events which are leading into the full establish-ment of the kingdom of Christ .

While the 37th chapter of Ezekiel does not directly prophes ythe resurrection of the dead, it is true, nevertheless, that thereceiving of Israel into divine favor calls for the resurrection ,for so many generations of Israelites have fallen asleep in death .Following the death of Solomon, the nation of Israel was divide dinto two kingdoms, known as Israel and Judah . Verse 22 assuresus that this division will be healed, implying that those wholived in that ancient time are to be awakened from death toparticipate in the blessings of that new kingdom to be rule dover by the antitypical David, even Jesus . (vs . 24) How far-reach-ing is the mercy and love of God !

Intervening Event sCHAPTERS 38 and 39 present prophecies of certain event s

related to Israel which must intervene prior to the full estab-lishment of the kingdom, and prior to the time when their sin swill be removed and they receive the Spirit of the Lord, an dhearts of flesh are given unto them. Briefly, chapter 38 depictsan attack that will be mounted against Israel by forces out of th e"north," under the leadership of one named Gog, from the lan dof Magog.

In view of the present situation, many students are inclinedto think that this army of aggression against Israel might wel lhail from Russia . Perhaps so . It is not especially important tha twe know in advance the exact details of events foretold in th eprophecy. Verse 8 indicates that this aggressive attack will notbe made against Israel until the nation is enjoying a measur eof prosperity and safety in the land, which is not the situatio nnow. This, then, is definitely a development of the future, an dit is not wise to speculate as to the details .

However, the final result of this aggressive attack against th eIsraelites is clearly indicated . Ezekiel points out that it will bethen that the Lord will manifest his hand in protecting and de-livering his people by the destruction of their enemies . TheLord says, "I will plead against him [Gog] with pestilence andwith blood ; and I will rain upon him, and upon his bands, andupon the many people that are with him, an overflowing rain ,and great hailstones, fire, and brimstone . Thus will I magnif ymyself, and sanctify myself ; and I will be known in the eyes ofmany nations, and they shall know that I am the Lord ."—vss .22, 2 3

It is evident, we think, that when the eyes of the nations areopened to realize that the great God of the universe, the Creatorof heaven and earth, has intervened on behalf of Israel, an dagainst themselves, they will realize the futility of continuin gtheir opposition. It would seem that from this point onward Chris twill be directing the affairs of the world, through the variouskingdom personnel previously proved worthy of this high posi-tion of trust . There will be his own footstep followers who, to-gether with him, will be the invisible rulers ; and these willfunction through their human representatives, the ancient wor-thies, who will be "princes in all the earth ." (Ps. 45 :16) Thebringing forth of these in the "better resurrection" will, i nitself, be a marvelous demonstration of divine power .—Heb. 11 :35, 39, 40

The Israelites themselves will then understand the meaningof their restoration to the Promised Land . The Lord says, "Sowill I make my holy name known in the midst of my peopleIsrael ; and I will not let them pollute my holy name any more :and the heathen shall know that I am the Lord, the Holy One i nIsrael ." (Ch. 39 :7) This thought is set forth in greater detailin the closing verses of the chapter, which we quote :

"Thus saith the Lord God ; Now will I bring again the captivit yof Jacob, and have mercy upon the whole house of Israel, andwill be jealous for my holy name ; after that they have bornetheir shame, and all their trespasses whereby they have tres-passed against me, when they dwelt safely in their land, andnone made them afraid . When I have brought them again fro m

the people, and gathered them out of their enemies' lands, an dam sanctified in them in the sight of many nations ; then shallthey know that I am the Lord their God, which caused the m[margin, by my causing of them] to be led into captivity amongthe heathen: but I have gathered them into their own land ,and have left none of them any more there . Neither will I hidemy face any more from them: for I have poured out my Spiritupon the house of Israel, saith the Lord God ."—vss. 25-29

In his various messages to the Israelites, the Lord has beenvery frank in his indictment of them because of their transgres-sions . He makes it plain that they had brought dishonor uponhis name among the Gentiles . But, as we have seen, this is notalways to be the case ; and, through the Prophet Zechariah, theLord explains what will cause a change in the situation . Againwe quote :

"It shall come to pass, that as ye were a curse among theheathen, 0 house of Judah, and house of Israel ; so will I saveyou, and ye shall be a blessing : fear not, but let your hands b estrong. For thus saith the Lord of hosts ; As I thought to punishyou, when your fathers provoked me to wrath, saith the Lor dof hosts, and I repented not : so again have I thought in thes edays to do well unto Jerusalem and to the house of Judah : fearye not. These are the things that ye shall do [in order to be ablessing] ; Speak ye every man the truth to his neighbor ; executethe judgment of truth and peace in your gates : and let non eof you imagine evil in your hearts against his neighbor; and loveno false oath : for all these are things that I hate, saith the Lord ."—Zech . 8 :13-17

Truly all those who are filled by the Spirit of the Lord, an dguided by divine principles of truth and righteousness will, o fnecessity, be a blessing to those with whom they come in contact .Thus the restored Israelites, cleansed of their defilements, willbe a powerful influence for good. And so will those of othe rnations who, as the kingdom authority spreads under the direc-tion of its ruling agencies, likewise become enlightened, an dbring their conduct into line with the laws of God then in forcethroughout the earth.

How wise, and all comprehensive is the divine plan of salvatio nfor "all the families of the earth" !

ICHRISTIAN LIFE AND DOCTRINE1

"In All Things

IN EPHESIANS 4 :15 we read ofgrowing up into Christ "in all

things." Truly has it been saidthat the evidence of life is activ-ity. Workmen tell us that unusedtools become rusty. An unused,inactive Christian becomes "rus-ty" also. The healthy Christianis an active Christian . The health yChristian life is a life of develop-ment and growth.

Paul taught that we shouldgrow in the likeness of Christ Je-sus, "in all things ." This mean sthat we should seek to emulatehis example in respect to our ev-ery effort to know and to doGod's will . Growing up into Christin all things means that we wil lnot attempt to specialize on somepoints of his character exampleand ignore the pattern set for u salong other lines .

Growing up into Christ in al lthings means that we will b ebalanced Christians . We shall notchoose those aspects of the Chris-tian life that specially appeal t ous to the exclusion of that whichthe Master taught and did alon gother lines.

In The Song of Solomon (5 :16)Jesus is referred to as the On ealtogether lovely . The verse reads,"His mouth is most sweet: yea,he is altogether lovely . This i smy beloved, and this is my friend,O daughters of Jerusalem." Soperfect and complete was th eMaster's character in harmon ywith the divine standard that h ecould say, as recorded in John14:9, "He that hath seen me hathseen the Father." Yes, Jesus wa sholy, harmless, undefiled, an dseparate from sinners . (Heb . 7 :26 )He met the divine requirement sin all respects . He made no mis-takes .

Jesus was always wholly devot-ed to the doing of the Heavenl yFather's will . This was true ofhim as the Logos, before he wasmade flesh for the suffering o fdeath. In Proverbs 8 :30 we read,"Then I was by him, as on ebrought up with him : and I wa sdaily his delight, rejoicing alway sbefore him. "

During the boyhood days of hi shuman life Jesus maintained th esame attitude of devotion to God .

only when we are in trouble . Je-sus considered popularity a timefor prayer . When we feel strong,that is the time we need thepromised grace. The Bible says,in I Corinthians 10 :12, "Where -fore let him that thinketh hestandeth take heed lest he fall . "

In Luke 6 :12, 13 we read, "Andit came to pass in those days, thathe went out into a mountain t opray, and continued all night inprayer to God. And when it wa sday, he called his disciples : andof them he chose twelve, who malso he named apostles ." The se-lection of the apostles was a mat-ter of great responsibility to Je-sus. Before undertaking it hesought and obtained that wisdo mwhich is from above . If we areto grow up into him in all things,then everything we undertake fo rthe Lord should be an occasionfor prayer .

Again, in Luke 22 :41, 42, weread, "And he was withdrawnfrom them about a stone's cast ,and kneeled down, and prayed .Saying, Father, if thou be will-ing, remove this cup from me :nevertheless not my will, butthine, be done." Now Jesus wasno longer popular with the public.None of his own was able to givehim the comfort he needed. It wasthrough prayer he obtained thenecessary strength for the lasttrying hours of his earthly life.Here the experience of Jesus tell sus the need of prayer when trial sbear heavily upon us.

In Matthew 11 :25, 26 we read ,"At that time Jesus answered andsaid, I thank thee, 0 Father, Lordof heaven and earth, because tho uhast hid these things from thewise and prudent, and hast re-vealed them unto babes. Even so ,Father : for so it seemed good inthy sight." Here is an experience ,the very nature of which shouldkeep us humble before the Lord .To the extent that we keep be -fore our minds the fact that Go dgives grace only to the humble i twill safeguard us from the dispo-sition to become proud, self-suf-ficient and independent .

Lastly we have the prayer o fJesus recorded in the 17th chap -ter of John . The greater part ofthis prayer is on behalf of hi sdisciples . Let not our prayers b eexclusively in our own interest.Such prayers would be selfish andexpensive . Let them be on behal fof all the brethren wherever andwhoever they may be. The Apostl ePaul, after seeing the Christianfully armed, concludes with thes ewords recorded in Ephesians 6 :18, "Praying always with allprayer and supplication in th eSpirit, and watching thereunt owith all perseverance and suppli-cation for all saints . "

Loyalty to the Wor d

JESUS was loyal to the Wordof God . If we are to grow up int ohim in all things then we, too ,must be loyal to the Word of God .The loyalty of Jesus to the Word

of God is evidenced in every de -tail of his life . Even the time fea-tures of the divine plan were giv-en due weight in their expressionof God's will for him.

To the Master there was a duetime for everything. In John 7 : 6Jesus said, "My time is not ye tcome." In John 8 :20 we read, "Hishour was not yet come," yet i nJohn 17:1 we find Jesus usingthese words, "Father, the hour iscome." In harmony with this wehave those words of Jesus record-ed in Matthew 26 :18, "My time i sat hand; I will keep the Passove rat thy house with my disciples . "

As the Jewish age did not closeuntil after the death of Jesus, heknew it was not for him to sendthe Gospel message to the Gen-tiles. Jesus restricted his effortsand the efforts of his disciples t o"the lost sheep of the house ofIsrael ." We will remember hi swords recorded in Matthew 10 :5, 6, "These twelve Jesus sentforth and commanded them, say-ing, Go not in the way of th eGentiles, and into any city of th eSamaritans enter ye not : But gorather to the lost sheep of th ehouse of Israel . "

How different were his instruc-tions after his resurrection! Ye tthey are in full accord with th edispensational truth of God'sWord . His commission to his dis-ciples after his resurrection isfound in Acts 1 :8, where we read ,"Ye shall receive power, afte r

that the Holy Spirit is come uponyou: and ye shall be witnessesunto me both in Jerusalem, andin all Judea, and in Samaria, andunto the uttermost part of theearth . "

Like Jesus, in whose steps w eare called to follow, we, too ,should recognize the value of dis-pensational truth. We should b esimilarly guided in our serviceto God. Many years ago the breth-ren had for their motto text forthe year, "In due time." We stillneed it . This should be true inrespect to the time features ofGod's plan as a whole . It shouldalso be true in respect to his tim efor those individual experienceswhich go to make up the Chris-tian life. We should leave ourtimes fully in his hands . Weshould be willing and glad to wai tupon him under all circumstan-ces .

Temptatio n

HEBREWS 4:15 tells us tha tJesus was tempted in all pointslike as we are, yet without sin .By observing how Jesus mettemptation we can follow his ex-ample . Let us consider how Je-sus met those three temptation sthat were presented to him earl yin his ministry . Matthew 4:2, 3reads, "And when he had faste dforty days and forty nights, hewas afterward an hungered . Andwhen the tempter came to him,he said, If thou be the Son of

God, command that these stonesbe made bread. "

Here the temptation was to usethe power of God which he ha dat his disposal to turn stones intobread in order to satisfy his hun-ger . Seeing that the Master hadfasted forty days and forty night sthis was a very crucial test . Howdid Jesus meet it? He replied t oSatan, "It is written, Man shallnot live by bread alone, but byevery word that proceedeth ou tof the mouth of God."—vs . 4

The principle involved in thistemptation is that of using spirit-ual advantages to receive materialblessings . We are not tempted toturn literal stones into bread, bu twe may be tempted to misuse ourspiritual blessings and advan-tages. One of the greatest spirit-ual blessings we can enjoy is thewonderful privilege of fellowshipwith those of like precious faith.Those who have been drawn to-gether by the blest tie that bindsour hearts in Christian love, se -cure benefits of friendship whichthe world can neither enjoy no rfully understand . Let us see to i tthat we do not exploit this ad-vantage for earthly gain.

The second temptation was thatJesus should cast himself fromthe pinnacle of the temple . TheDevil quoted Scripture to assureJesus that God would protect him ."Then the Devil taketh him upinto the holy city, and setteth hi mon a pinnacle of the temple, and

saith unto him, If thou be theSon of God, cast thyself down :for it is written, He shall give hisangels charge concerning thee :and in their hands they shall bearthee up, lest at any time thoudash thy foot against a stone . "(vss . 5, 6) How did Jesus mee tthis temptation? "Jesus said untohim, It is written again, Tho ushalt not tempt the Lord thyGod ."—vs . 7

The principle involved in thi stemptation is that of deliberatel ydoing something to prove oneselfto be a child of God . To follo wthe Master's example, to grow u pinto him in all things, we willalways have to be on the alertto resist suggestions of this kind ,even though Scripture is quotedin support of such suggestions.

The third temptation was thatSatan offered Jesus all the king-doms of this world on conditio nthat he fall down and worshi phim. "Again, the Devil taketh himup into an exceeding high moun-tain, and showeth him all thekingdoms of the world, and theglory of them ; and saith unto him ,All these things will I give thee ,if thou wilt fall down and worshipme." (vss . 8, 9) How did Jesusmeet this temptation? In the sam emanner! "Then saith Jesus untohim, Get thee hence, Satan : forit is written, Thou shalt worshi pthe Lord thy God, and him onlyshalt thou serve ."—vs. 10

the temptation to sidestep thepathway of suffering and sacri-fice . In his consecration, Jesushad agreed to do all that was writ -ten of him in the volume of th ebook, in the Word of God . Hisloyalty to that covenant of sacri-fice would not permit him, evenin the slightest degree, to renderallegiance to the adversary o fGod . When the tempter came, h ewas promptly rejected by a "thu ssaith the Lord . "

As his disciples, we must fol-low his example if we are to growup into him in all things . We havebeen invited and have agreed t ofollow his steps . Whenever anysuggestions come to sidestep th epathway of sacrifice and suffer-ing, we can immediately concludethat they are from the Adversary .Only through loyalty to the truth ,irrespective of what it may cost ,can we be protected against th ewiles of the Devil . Let us contin-ue to make straight paths for ou rfeet.—Heb . 12 :1 3

Humilit y

THOUGH perfect, Jesus alway smanifested the true spirit of hu-mility and submission. While hewas glad to claim his true rela-tionship with his Heavenly Fa-ther, yet he did not claim equalitywith the Father . On the contrar yhe said, "My Father is greaterthan I ." (John 14:28) Again, h ehumbly acknowledged, "I can o fmine own self do nothing ."—John 5 :3 0

CHRISTIAN LIFE AND DOCTRINE

Yes, the humility and submis-sion of Jesus were always mani-fested in his attitude toward andhis relationship to God . No matterhow exacting the trials, Jesussubmitted to them all in humility .As we read in I Peter 2 :23 :"When he was reviled, [he] re-viled not again ; when he suffered ,he threatened not ; but committe dhimself to him that judgeth right-eously. "

To grow up into Jesus in al lthings means that we, like him ,will submit ourselves in all hu-mility to whatever trials theHeavenly Father in his wisdomsees fit to come upon us . Let u snot spend time and energy in ef-forts to justify ourselves . It is Go dwho justifies. (Rom. 8 :33) Therewill be nothing unrighteous, un-true, or unfair about the divinejudgment.

It is not so much the positio nin which we find ourselves thatmatters. Very often that is be-yond our control. It does matte rhow we behave and conduct our-selves in that circumstance or po-sition . If, when we do good an dsuffer for it, let us remember thewords of I Peter 2 :21 : "For eve nhereunto were ye called: becauseChrist also suffered for us, leav-ing us an example, that ye shoul dfollow his steps. "

In Matthew 11 :29 we hear Jesu ssaying, "Learn of me; for I ammeek and lowly in heart." One of

It is only because of the for -

giveness and compassion of ourHeavenly Father toward us thatwe enjoy the blessings of sonshipthrough Christ Jesus . The shortest verse we have inour Bible comprises two words ,"Jesus wept ." (John 11:35) Thi swas in connection with the deat hof Lazarus and the sorrow whichhad come upon that home i nBethany. We believe that Jesu swept, not only because of sympa-thy for Martha and Mary and thei rfriends, but because he realize dthat it would be a long time be-fore the curse of death would beremoved . Such a realization woul donly serve to increase his deepsympathy for the sorrow of man-kind.

Are we growing up into Chris tin all things? If so, we too wil lbe sympathetic toward the groan-ing creation, especially towardour brethren. If our hearts arevoid of compassion and sympathyfor others in their troubles, weare just that much behind in ou rChristian growth . Does not theBible say, "Weep with them thatweep"? (Rom. 12:15) Again I Co-rinthians 12 :26, Diaglott, "Wheth-er one member suffer, all themembers sympathize; or, whethe rone member is glorified, all th emembers rejoice with it. "

Not only Jesus, the Head, butthe church, his body, come unde rthe declaration of Isaiah 61 :1-3 .Here we are told that the Spiritof the Lord commissions us tocomfort all that mourn . The ministry of Jesus .was atwofold one. As the Good Shep-herd and Elder Brother he minis-tered to his disciples . As the Tru eand Faithful Witness he bore tes-timony of the truth to others . Hedid not neglect one in favor ofthe other. Both were included i nthe divine will for him. Both weregiven due consideration through-

out the entire period of his min-istry .

To grow up into Christ in allthings means that we, like him,will be zealous in his service . Thi szeal will consume us, as it con-sumed him . In Titus 2 :14 we rea dconcerning Jesus and the church ,"Who gave himself for us, tha the might redeem us from all ini-quity, and purify unto himself apeculiar people, zealous of goo dworks ." These good works are acontinuation of the works begu nby Jesus . Jesus said in prayer t ohis Heavenly Father, "As thouhast sent me into the world, evenso have I also sent them into th eworld ."—John 17:1 8

His JoyWHILE Jesus was "a man of

sorrows and acquainted wit hgrief," he was filled with joy . Apart of the heritage he left fo rhis followers was his joy. Inprayer to his Heavenly Father ,Jesus said, "And now come I tothee ; and these things I speak i nthe world, that they might hav emy joy fulfilled in themselves . "(John 7 :13) If, then, we are grow-ing up into Christ in all things ,we too will experience his joy .

The Bible says, "Rejoice in theLord alway: and again I say, re-joice ." (Phil . 4:4) We cannot havetoo many rejoicing Christians ,providing they rejoice in th eLord. This joy is set before usnow, and forms part of our pres- .

ent inheritance . One day it wil lbe fully realized. That will bewhen we hear those covetedwords of the Master, "Well done ,good and faithful servant : . . .enter thou into the joy of thyLord ."—Matt . 25 :2 1

His Love

OUR last consideration is thelove of Jesus. It is a love whichwe find exhibited in every detailof his life of faithfulness . We findit in all his dealings, not onlywith the disciples but with othersalso . It was his supreme love fo rGod and for his cause that carrie dJesus through to glorious victory .

Using the phraseology of I Co-rinthians 13, we can say that Je-sus suffered long; he was kind :he did not envy: he did not vaunthimself ; he was not puffed up ;he did not behave himself un-seemly; he sought not his own ;he was not provoked ; he though tno evil ; he rejoiced not in ini-quity ; he rejoiced in the truth ;he covered, he believed, he hoped ,he endured .

Our text says we are to growup into Christ in all things, whichincludes love . It is so importantthat we do grow up into his lovethat Jesus made it a subject o fone of his commands saying, "Thi sis my commandment, that ye loveone another, as I have loved you . "(John 15:12) Again, Jesus said ,"By this shall all know that ye

are my disciples, if ye have loveone to another ."—John 13 :3 5

Love is the complete expressio nof unselfishness . This definitelyapplies to the love of God, whogave. It applies to the love ofJesus, who gave . It must applyto us, who are to grow up intohim in all things. Love, like allother attributes, is somethingmore than a topic .

Merely to say, "I love theLord," is not enough . Jesus said ,"He that hath my commandments ,and keepeth them, he it is thatloveth me." (John 14:21) As weread in I John 2 :5, "Whoso keep-eth his Word, in him verily is thelove of God perfected ." In ourendeavor to copy Christ, to growup into him in all things, w eshould always be guided by th eterms of our covenant of sacri-fice, and be obedient to every de -tail given to us in the Word ofGod.

May our attention be fixed onJesus. Let us copy him as ourpattern in every respect . Let usnot just follow part of God's in-structions . Let there be no ne-glect . het us be devoted to God,laying hold of the privilege o fprayer . Let us be loyal to th eWord of God; meet temptationsas Jesus met them; be humble ,be compassionate, be sympathetic ,be zealous in service, be joyful ,be loving toward our brethre nand toward all. Thus we shal lgrow up into him in all things .

It is imperative that we lovethe truth . Doing this, we shal lrejoice to walk and grow in thetruth . We shall delight also t oserve and guard the truth, withall the decision and zeal that wecan acquire and command .

It is the divine purpose thatwe be sanctified through th etruth . (John 17 :17) It is thus thatwe will be counted worthy of th ehigh calling of God in Christ Je-sus, and "fulfil all the good plea -sure" of our Father's will.(II Thess . 1:11) We should hav e

regard for the fact that God waspleased to call us with a high andheavenly calling, and should b eenthusiastic about the truth andits service.

Are we as pleased and gratefu las we once were? Or, are we dis-appointed and discontented withthe beauty and the grandeur ofthe truth? Are we "lukewarm "because of losing our "first love" ?Those in this condition are theones most likely to be deceivedby the great Adversary .—Rev . 2 :4 ; 3 :15, 16

We are to "buy" the truth, and"never part with it." (Prov . 23 :23, Moffatt) As consecrated foot-step followers of Jesus, we wouldsacrifice life itself in order tohold the truth, and to serve i tto others . On no account shouldwe put creeds and traditions ofmen before the truth . Nor wouldwe sacrifice the truth for sect o rparty, for we have heard the call ,"Come out of her, my people, tha tye be not partakers of her sins ,and that ye receive not of he rplagues ."—Rev . 18: 4

The breth-ren generally throughout theBritish Isles have been advised ofthis opportunity, and their sup-port has been very encouraging .Requests for booklets offered ina monthly magazine four monthsago are still being received . We have heard from a brother ,a former full time pilgrim, who ,for twenty-five years, has been"lost" in a large English city .Through one of The Dawn book-lets which was placed in hi shands, he discovered that therewere still some brethren who re-tained the truths which he em-braced in 1911. Today, the brotheris greatly rejoicing . We quotefrom one of his letters :

"I had one of your booklets ,`When a Man Dies,' handed to me acouple of days ago . Believe me, itwas like a breath of fresh air to atlast contact someone who still ac-cepts `The Divine Plan of the Ages 'as a basis for Bible study . I ac-cepted the truth as given thereinforty-nine years ago, and althoughlatterly much isolated, I have con-tinued to keep my faith . I wouldmuch like some fellowship withlike minded brethren, and to at-tend meetings ."

In a subsequent letter thisbrother wrote :

"This contact with you hasbrought back memories like a flood,and it has lifted me up as nothingelse could . I do thank our HeavenlyFather for his grace and love a tthis time . It is difficult to expressmy feelings, and my gratitude tothe Lord, for the way, through you ,he has brought such joy and bless-ings into my life, also that of my

dear wife . May he richly bless youall."

This brother continues to b egreatly blessed by the Lord . Anewly formed ecclesia now meetsregularly in his own district, an dhe is very happy in letting hi slight shine to assist others alon gthe way that leads to life. The Unity of the Spiri t"Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwel ltogether in unity! It is like the precious ointment upon the head ,that ran down upon the beard, even Aaron's beard : that went

down to the skirts of his garments ."—Psalm 133 :1, 2

ON THE eve of Jesus' crucifixion he prayed for the unity o fhis followers . He prayed that they might be at one wit h

each other even as he and his Heavenly Father were one . (John17:20, 21) The oneness that has always existed between the Heav-enly Father and his beloved Son is a complete unity of purpos eand objective resulting from the unreserved dedication of Jesu sto do his Heavenly Father's will . Of Jesus it was prophesied, " Idelight to do thy will, 0 my God: yea, thy law is within myheart ."—Ps. 40 : 8

The oneness of the Father and the Son is not the outgrowthof a mutual agreement between the two, but is the result of Jesus'humble obedience to his Heavenly Father ; and this is the basi sof our unity with the Father, with Jesus, and with one another .It is described in Ephesians 4 :3 as a unity of the Spirit, a unityproduced by the Holy Spirit of God . It was this that was illus-trated by the holy anointing oil poured upon the head of Israel' shigh priest .

The Spirit of God is the power of God, and in this associatio nwe may think of it as the power of his mind, his thoughts, hiswill, as these reach us through his written Word of truth . Everypart of the Word of God is a product of the Holy Spirit. Theprophets of the Old Testament wrote as they were moved bythe Holy Spirit . Jesus' teachings are the setting forth of truth srevealed by the Holy Spirit at the River Jordan, when the "heav-ens" were opened to him. The teachings of the apostles reflect

the truths revealed to them by the outpouring of the Holy Spiritat Pentecost, and later by a special dispensation to Paul .

Thus when the fully consecrated humbly search the Scripture sthey find the will of God expressed therein : and if they ar eobedient to what they find they will be at one with the Heavenl yFather, with his Beloved Son, and with their brethren . Thus theformula for true unity of the Spirit is a very simple one, an dthe real test of its workability depends upon the genuineness o four full and humble devotion to the Heavenly Father's will .

Every follower of the Master from Pentecost until now ha sbeen afflicted by human imperfections which have hindered ,in varying degrees, a complete subjection to the molding influ-ences of the Holy Spirit in the life . Nevertheless, it is encourag-ing to note the degree to which the Spirit's influence in the heart sof God's people has brought them together, and enables them t owork harmoniously in a common cause, which is the service o fthe Lord .

In worldly circles people are brought together by similaritie sof taste, or nationality, of background in life, and other factor swhich make it congenial for them 'to be associated with on eanother. But this is not true with the followers of the Master ,and apparently by divine design. For example, the twelve apostleschosen by Jesus were of different temperament and social back -ground. Certainly Peter would never have chosen Matthew th epublican and tax collector to be his partner in the fishing busi-ness . Nor can we imagine Matthew inviting Peter to assist himin the collection of taxes .

But these two, and the remainder of the twelve—all differ-ent—were fused into' a working unit by the power of the Hol ySpirit, this being made possible by each one's dedication to theHeavenly Father, and to the doing of his will . The outworkingof the Heavenly Father's plan became the common cause o fall, and they rejoiced in that "good and pleasant" experienc eof dwelling together in unity.

heirs of the promises with believing Jews . It is difficult to imag-ine two groups of people who by nature had so little in common ,and at the same time entertained so many prejudices against eac hother, yet, through the Gospel, individuals from these two group swere brought together into one fellowship .

This was not accomplished without difficulties . There is muchin the Book of Acts and in Paul's epistles concerning the prob-lems created in the church by the incoming Gentile converts .But we can be confident that the fully consecrated among themsuccessfully scaled the hurdles, and found the way to a true unit yof the Spirit .

Paul's admonitions were a great help along this line. To thechurch at Galatia he wrote : "Ye are all the children of God[his household] by faith in Christ Jesus . For as many of you ashave been baptized into Christ have put on Christ. There is nei-ther Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there i sneither male nor female : for ye are all one in Christ Jesus . Andif ye be Christ's, then are ye Abraham's seed, and heirs accord-ing to the promise ."—Gal . 3 :26-29

What a wonderful family—God's family! They are all draw nto him by his love, the power of which is operative through theirfaith in his promises, a faith that leads to the full dedication o fthemselves to the doing of his will . Thus they are accepted intohis family as "children"—accepted in and through our belove dChrist Jesus .

It matters not who or what they may have been when th etruth of the Word first touched their hearts, for they are nownew creatures in Christ Jesus. They all have one Father—th eHeavenly Father—whose will they delight to do. They also havean Elder Brother—Christ Jesus—whose precepts and exampl ethey follow. They are all one in him, and brought into this blesse dunity by the power of the Holy Spirit .

Paul makes a general reference to Jews and Gentiles ; malesand females ; the bond and the free . In these general categorieswe think of individuals . There was the Gentile, Cornelius, a cen-turion of an Italian band . There was the wealthy Philemon, an dhis runaway slave, Onesimus . There was Lydia, the seller of

purple, who evidently was also a woman of means. There wasthe young disciple, Timothy .

We might continue mentioning the names of faithful disciple sin the Early Church. What we know of the characteristics of eac hof them suggests how unlikely any of them would have soughtout the companionship of the others, yet they all became breth-ren in Christ Jesus through the power of the Holy Spirit .

Not Al l

BUT not all who attached themselves to the Early Church wer eat one with the brethren. Paul warned the elders at Ephesus thatgrievous "wolves" would come in among them, not sparing theflock; also that of their own number men would arise, speakin gperverse things, to draw away disciples after them .—Acts 20 :28-3 0

One of the prevalent causes of disunity among the Lord' speople in every part of the ages has been the desire to have afollowing. This is a clear manifestation of failure to recogniz ethe basic principle of Christian unity, which is a recognition ofthe will of God that Jesus Christ alone is to be the Head andLeader of the church .

There are those among the human race who are not happyunless they are leading somebody or directing something . If per -chance a person of this nature is attracted by the Gospel an dassociates himself with the Lord's people, he has difficulty over -coming this desire to be a leader . If he fails to overcome it, thensooner or later he is likely to be found teaching "pervers ethings"—things, either of doctrine or practice, hoping thus t oattract a following .

As Paul indicated, there were such in the Early Church, an dit is the same now . But this does not imply that the Lord's trulyconsecrated and humble people are not at one . God may permitsome of these to be influenced temporarily by false teachers s othat they might learn needed lessons . However, if their heartsare perfect before him, he will draw them back to himself, an dto that blessed oneness with his people which is a part of thei rpresent heritage of joy .

CarnalityIN THE church at Corinth a state of immaturity existed amon g

the brethren which Paul described as carnality, meaning thatthe viewpoints and desires of the flesh were not being fullyyielded up in preference to the will of God . Paul explains howthis spirit of carnality manifested jtself . We quote :

"I, brethren, could not speak unto you as unto spiritual, bu tas unto carnal, even as unto babes in Christ. I have fed you withmilk, and not with meat : for hitherto ye were not able to bearit, neither yet now are ye able . For ye are yet carnal : for wherea sthere is among you envying, and strife, and divisions [margin ,factions], are ye not carnal, and walk as men [margin, accordin gto man]? For while one saith, I am of Paul ; and another, I amof Apollos ; are ye not carnal? Who then is Paul, and who i sApollos, but ministers by whom ye believed, even as the Lor dgave to every man? I have planted, Apollos watered; but Godgave the increase. So then neither is he that planted any thing ,neither he that watereth; but God that gave the increase . Nowhe that planteth and he that watereth are one : and every manshall receive his own reward according to his own labor . Forwe are laborers together with God."—I Cor . 3 :1-9

This admonition is not addressed to those who desired to at -tract a following, nor to "wolves in sheep 's clothing," but to thesincere, fully consecrated, but immature followers of the Master .Instead of seeking a following, they desired to be followers o fmen rather than the Lord . And with this immature viewpoint ,there was naturally envying and strife among them .

This viewpoint also has prevailed throughout the age, an dexists here and there today. It reflects a state of immaturitythat is due to a lack of full faith and confidence in the Lord an din his leadership . One reason some of the brethren in Corinthwanted to be Paulite and others Apollosites is that these brethrenseemed nearer to them than the Lord, and were more tangible .

This lack of faith has led, in all periods of the age, to thesetting up of human leaders, with the claim that they spoke withequal authority in the church to our Lord himself . Paul hopedthat the brethren in Corinth would outgrow this lack of faith ,and learn to look directly to the Lord and to his Word for au -

thoritative leadership, and he endeavored to help them towar dthis end .

And in this connection what humility and nobility of characte rPaul manifested! Actually, Paul did speak with authority in thechurch, for he was not "a whit behind" the other apostles as th einfallibly inspired servants of the church . (II Cor . 11 :5) Never-theless, he was determined to point the Corinthian brethren totheir true Head and Leader, Jesus, and to do this he emphasize dthat in his personal ministry to the brethren in Corinth he wa smerely one of the laborers together with God, putting Apollo sin the same category .

The Lord's Servant sONE of the evidences of growth in grace is the ability to

discern the true position of the Lord's servants in the church ,and the ability to give proper honor where proper honor is due .The mature follower of the Master knows that there is only on eHead of the Church, who is Christ Jesus . He also knows thatthe holy prophets of the Old Testament, the twelve apostles o fthe New Testament, and our Lord Jesus Christ, are the onlyinfallible guides of the church . These are the ones who havebeen used by the Lord to fill his great storehouse of truth wit hthe precious doctrines of the divine plan which constitute th etrue basis of our unity in Christ .

And then there are the pastors, teachers, and evangelists who mthe Lord uses to help us understand the doctrines of the divineplan . Jesus spoke of "that servant" who, at the end of the age ,and the time of his second presence, would be used as a "stew-ard" to take from the "storehouse" and serve those gloriou sgems of truth placed there by God's infallible servants of th epast .

Wisely and faithfully that servant emphasized and re-empha-sized the vital need of proving all things by the inspired Word ,and of looking to Jesus as the true Head and Leader of his people .Human nature has not changed since the days of the Earl yChurch, and we need to be reminded over and over again tha tit is not God's will to be of Paul, or of Apollos, or of Peter, o rof any beloved and greatly used servant in the church . We

honor them most when we take heed to their instructions, in-structions in keeping with Jesus' statement, "One is your Master ,even Christ ; and all ye are brethren ."—Matt . 23 : 8

Today's DiversitiesCONSIDERING the lessons and examples of unity we find i n

the Word of God, and bringing them down to our day, we fin dthat God's Spirit is working among God's people now, even asthen; for it continues to hold the brethren together despite thei rdifferences of background and characteristics . This is a greatencouragement, for it is one of the evidences that God is dealingwith us, even as his blessing was upon the brethren in the EarlyChurch .

Actually, conditions are not too different among the brethrennow than they were at the beginning of the age . True, we do nothave the Jew-Gentile problem as a deterrent to unity, but we d ohave brethren of many nationalities, races, and former faiths .By the power of the Holy Spirit these have been brought intoa blessed unity of the Spirit in the bonds of peace . If Paul werewriting to us now he might well say, "There is neither Greek no rItalian ; there is neither German nor French ; there is neithe rBritish nor American; there is neither Polish nor Scandinavian ;there is neither colored nor white ; there is neither Spanish no rIndian, for ye are all one in Christ Jesus . "

Before coming into the truth, some of these were Catholics ,some were Methodists, Baptists, Episcopalians, or members ofone or another of the many other denominations . Some wereassociated with non-Christian groups, and some were unbelievers .In the Early Church there were both young and old, and tha talso is true today. All these factors make for diversification o ftemperament which would tend to separate rather than drawtogether. But the power of the Holy Spirit overcomes these dif-ferences, and blends the hearts of the Lord's people into tha t"good" and "pleasant" unity of the Spirit .

Regardless of nationality, race, or former religious affiliations ,or lack of them, each of the Lord's truth-enlightened, Spirit -filled people has something to contribute toward the spiritua lupbuilding of the brethren with whom he may come in contact .This is also true regardless of age . Paul wrote to Timothy, "Let

no man despise thy youth ." To this he added, "But be thou anexample of the believers, in word, in conversation [Greek, con -duct], in charity, in faith, and in purity ." (I Tim. 4:12) In otherwords, if Timothy displayed from the heart these genuine quali-ties of a mature new creature in Christ Jesus, which we haveevery reason to think he did, he would continue to be accepte dby those of "like precious faith," and by his ministry be a bless-ing to them .

Unity in the MinistryWE ARE . to use every possible opportunity to minister th e

glorious Gospel of Christ . As we grow in grace we will rejoiceto co-operate with the brethren in that ministry, and thus enjoythis aspect of the blessed unity of the Spirit . Our increasing faithwill enable us to discern that the Spirit of the Lord would no tbe leading his people in different directions .

Faith is a tremendously important adjunct to the unity of th eSpirit, both as it is related to our fellowship in the meeting sand to our ministry of the truth . If we truly believe that Go dis dealing with us, and teaching us through his Word, there willbe little danger of our doing and saying things which may tendto disrupt the blessed unity of the Spirit which we enjoy withhis people. If we lack faith, any slight spirit of ambition mightwell cause us to go contrary to the Holy Spirit, and thus fail ,temporarily, at least, to enjoy the blessings which belong t othose who are at one with Christ Jesus and with his people .

Our faith should enable us to believe that God is caring forhis people today, even as he has in the past. By faith we acceptthe divine commission of the Spirit to be heralds of the kingdommessage, and thereby bind up the brokenhearted, comfort th emourning, proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening ofthe prison to them that are bound . We also have the privilege ofproclaiming "the day of vengeance of our God ."—Isa . 61 :1- 3

Faith will accept the instructions of the Word of God as t ohow this is to be done—that Jesus is to be the hub around whic hour message is proclaimed—for we are to be his witnesses . Byfaith we will rejoice in the knowledge that it is those who ar ebeheaded for "the witness of Jesus and for the Word of God"who will live and reign with Christ a thousand years. Faith i n

the Word of God should help us to realize that we are not com-missioned to proclaim any other message .

Thus we will continue to rejoice in the privilege of "together "lifting up the voice of truth in proclaiming the glorious Gospe lof the kingdom. (Isa . 52:8) Truly our partnership in the ministr yof the truth is one of the blessed aspects of our unity in Christ .The Spirit's Powe r

WE SHOULD not underestimate the power of God's Spirit inkeeping his people together . Some years ago a brother fromanother part of the world attended one of the general conven-tions of the brethren in America. He observed the harmony thatexisted, not only in the many discourses which were given fro mthe platform, but also in the general fellowship of the brethren .In reporting his experi3nce he implied that in his opinion ther emust have been some form of dictatorship that was holding thebrethren in line . He seemed unable to believe that the Spirit o fGod could so fully be working among the brethren in these lastdays .

How blessed it is to, realize that the Spirit of the Lord is stil lin the midst of his people! We believe that we have been begot -ten by the Spirit, and have received the Spirit's anointing . Weare assured of our sonship by the witness of the Spirit . By theseal of the Spirit our victory of faith is guaranteed, if we continuefaithful . Shall we doubt that the same Holy Spirit of God thathas come on down from Jesus, the Head, even to the presen t"feet" members of the body, functions to hold us together in asweet and blessed oneness, even as it did in the Early Church ?

Outwardly, it is not a perfect unity now, even as it was not aperfect unity at the beginning of the age. "Wolves" appear amongus, even as among them. From time to time there are those whoseem more interested in a following than in the spiritual pros-perity of Zion. There are also those whose faith is not yet quitestrong enough to let go of the arm of flesh and lean wholly o nthe Lord. But we are all maturing into a deeper spiritual life ,and into a more precious and fuller unity with our Lord an dwith one another. And we are rejoicing in the hope of tha tperfect oneness beyond the veil, when the Master's prayer fo runity will be fully and gloriously answered .

Privilege of Service

"Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these Mybrethren, ye have done it unto Me."—Matthew 25 :40

A LTHOUGH this scripture ha sreference to those who wil l

become the Lord's sheep—hisbrethren—during the millennia lage, as indicated by the openingwords of the parable, "When th eSon of Man shall come in hi sglory" (Matt. 25:31), the principl eof the verse is equally applicabl eto the Lord's people of the Gospelage. Any service, even the small-est act that would bring refresh-ment, or comfort, to any of theLord's followers ("a cup of coldwater"), the Lord Jesus, the greatHead of the church, counts a sdone directly to himself.

Hence, there is no need for th eremark we sometimes hear, "HowI envy those who enjoyed per-sonal contact with the Masterwhen in the flesh . How much Ishould have appreciated the privi -lege of attending to his needs!"for the Lord is still present asrepresented in his people, th emembers of his body. thatreceiveth you receiveth me . "

Thought of from this stand -point, our service for one anothe ris lifted far above the level o f

those things which may be de -scribed as good works, and place din a category by itself, a class ofprivilege that can be enjoyed byfew beyond the Lord's conse-crated children .

There are two pictures in th eGospels in which our privilege ofservice for the Lord is particu-larly brought to our attention :

(1) In Mark 14 :3-9 we have th eaccount of a woman, who, whenJesus was in the house of Simo nthe leper in Bethany, anointed hishead with ointment, the odour ofwhich filled the house. John 12 :1-3 tells us that this woman wasMary, the sister of Martha an dLazarus . (2) Luke 7:36-38 tells ofan anointing while Jesus sat atmeat in a Pharisee's house . Awoman who was a sinner anointe dhis feet .

The first of these two incident sappropriately pictures the privi-lege of those who came into per-sonal contact with the Master athis first advent, which gave themthe opportunity of anointing himwith the sweet perfume of love .This service could only be appre -

ciated in proportion to one's un-derstanding of the truth concern-ing the Lord Jesus, who he was,and the great work he had cometo do . This was service which be-came more and more costly astime went on, owing to the in -creasing unpopularity of Jesuswith the scribes, Pharisees anddoctors of the law, and as man yas they could influence .

The second incident reminds u sthat it is still our privilege toserve the Lord in a very direc tand real sense. The great Hea dof the church is no longer wit hus in the flesh, but our Lord's"feet" would well represent th echurch still on the earth afterJesus, the Head, had ascended t othe Father.

The members of the church i ncontact with the earth throughou tthe Gospel age are appropriatel yrepresented by the feet. But ina special sense this would applyto the last members at the end o fthe age, who are specifically de-scribed as "the feet of him." (Isa.52 :7) These we may anoint withthe ointment of truth, anointingtheir eyes of understanding thatthey may see the wonders of thedivine plan. (Rev. 3 :18) We canfurther refresh and encouragethem by the inspiring promisesof the Lord's Word, as we haveability and opportunity.

The ointment used in th eanointing at Bethany was verycostly . (Mark 14:3) The same

thing is implied of that used fo rthe anointing in the Pharisee' shouse. Just so, considerable cos tin the way of labour and sacrificeis frequently necessary if wewould find one ready to receiv ethe blessing and refreshment ofthe harvest message .

Further, it should be notice dhow this act of loving service pro -duced a murmuring on the partof some who did not fully appre-ciate either the motive or theservice that had been performed .Similarly, our endeavors to anointothers with the sweet influenc eof present truth will often pro-duce murmuring and oppositionon the part of those who canno tappreciate either the motive sprompting our efforts or theircost, to bless our fellows with themessage which has so refreshe dour own hearts .

Large sums of money havesometimes been spent in arrang-ing and advertising public meet-ings, with the hope that som emight be reached and blessedwith the light of the true Gospel .Some, because of not understand-ing the work being done, havesaid, "What a waste of energyand means, which could havebeen put to so much better use ;for instance, to assist some of thepoor world' who are in materia ldistress . "

Just as in both of these inci-dents under discussion it :s acomfort to note how the Lord un -

derstood and approved the motiv eprompting the loving service, s othe loving self-sacrificing servic efor him and his, performed by th e"woman" (the true church), isdeeply appreciated by the sameMaster .

We are further informed tha ta memorial of what had beendone would be made knownthroughout all the earth . The ac -counts of these two anointingshave been, of course, circulate das a part of the Gospel storywherever the Bible has gone. Inthe fulfilment of the symbolicalpicture it can also be seen ho wthe work of the church—the self -sacrificing efforts to preach theGospel in all the world for a wit-ness with a view to bringing theprospective members of Christunder the anointing of the Wor dand Spirit—frequently carrie dforward in spite of much opposi-tion and suffering for righteous-ness' sake, will be known and ap-preciated by all during the periodof Messiah's kingdom .

Our work, now frequently mis-understood and evilly spoken of ,will be fully understood and ap-preciated in that great day whenall secrets will be made known .(I Cor. 4:5) As Peter says, "The ymay by your good works, whichthey shall behold, glorify Go d[not now, but] in the day of visita -tion." (I Pet . 2:12) That will bewhen all men, living and dead ,will be brought to an accurate

knowledge of the truth, includinga knowledge of how the Lord'swork of "taking out a people fo rhis name" has been, in spite ofevery satanic hindrance, carrie dforward .—I Tim. 2 :4 ; Acts 15:14,Diaglot t

Let us, then, appreciate everyprivilege of service coming withinour reach, and specially every op-portunity we may have of reach-ing with the truth some of thefeet members of Christ still con-fused with misconceptions of thedivine character and plan. Theodor of such faithful servic eeven now fills the house of God ,and in the future the records ofsuch faithfulness will be know nin all the world—a memorial ofwhat has been previously done.

In both Matthew's and Mark'saccount of the anointing at Beth-any, we are told that a woma ndid the anointing. John, in hisaccount of the same thing—prob-ably written long after the familyat Bethany had passed away—in-forms us that it was Mary, thesister of Martha and Lazarus, wh operformed this loving service . Itis enough for the Lord's faithfu lfollowers to have the satisfactionof serving their Master and hi sbrethren, whether what they d ocomes to the notice of others, oris known to their Lord and Headonly . "Let not thy left hand knowwhat thy right hand doeth" is th eMaster's wise counsel againstseeking for publicity.—Matt . 6 :3
