High Ash School
The last two weeks of term were very busy….
We had an Oracy Showcase where our successfulfinalists performed their speeches on global warmingto their parents and the staff at High Ash. Thechildren had scripted their own speeches and theywere articulate, expressive and moving with someamazing vocabulary- a real showcase indeed! EachKS2 Finalist received a personal certificate to remem-ber this achievement.
We also had our Music Concert in the evening where our talented orchestra andchoir performed along with individual musicians, with some duets and groupperformances. Many of these were arranged by the children themselves which isa credit to their progress in music. It was also great this year to be joined bymembers of the choir from St Mary’s Church, Great Brickhill who sang with ourchoir as well.

As you know we are looking to update our reading booksand I am delighted to inform you that the Summer Fair raised £3,200. What agreat contribution this will be! The new‘log cabin’ will be built by the Parish Council and then looked after by the ParishHall Committee as an additional Parish asset for use by all when not needed byLittle Ashes. More news on this exciting new project will be circulated in duecourse.

Thank you.
Visitors from Bow Brickhill WI, husbands, lovers and friends, were all welcomedto our meeting in July to enjoy an evening of “Magic Hands” with Paul Corum.Paul became entranced with magic effects, as he prefers to call them, as a teenagerwatching David Blaine performing close up tricks with cards.
Paul started his working life as a footballer and had to give up following injury.During his recovery he joined a group of magicians in Dunstable who taught himhow to shuffle a pack of cards until he could draw out the jokers. This took him6-7 years of practice and formed the basis of his performance with us. Our wouldbe Debbie McGee members helped him with intricate card tricks, mind readingsequences and even a Rubik’s cube that apparently solved itself! One NOT for thesqueamish was when he pushed a long steel nail into his nose! Do not try this athome! How did he do it all? It’s magic……
Our next meeting is members’ night but on 11 September we will be back tonormal with Paul Rabbitts telling us about Great British Parks.Come and join us in the Parish Hall. Want more information? Email us [email protected].

Church News - August 2019 Notes from the Parish Council
It has been noted that several of the Scots Pines in The Spinney have died and needremoval before they become rotten and dangerous. In the early Autumn the ParishCouncil will cut down these trees and also engage a specialist tree surgeon toconduct some surgical work on the large oak tree at the edge of the Spinney as thishas lost two large branches in recent years and there is a worry that more maybreak off in stormy weather. As this is a large specimen tree we would like topreserve it as best we can as we believe there are many years of life left in it, if wecan make it safer.
As part of this tree work we will also remove some birch trees on the edge of thecricket field as these have now grown too large for their current location.
The Parish Council is very conscious that the removal of trees is detrimental toboth the village and the wider environment, thus we will be replanting Scots Pinesin the Spinney and native species trees close to where the birches will be removedso future generations can enjoy woodland areas around the village.
