Iwonder if you’ve every thought about thethorny issue of heaven and hell?
Heaven, perhaps along the lines of beingin the presence of God, and hell, in the
presence of the devil? Maybe that’s toosimplistic?
My thoughts on hell are that it would bepopulated by goats, (I don’t get on
well with goats, they take one look at meand run… not away, but towards me!) Andthen there’s the diet, it will undoubtedly becelery, cooked and uncooked, possibly lacedwith Marmite. And then there’s music,whatever it is, it will be played exclusivelyon the 5-string banjo, a terrible placeindeed!
What of heaven? The church has recent-ly celebrated the Ascension of Jesus
into heaven. It is, we believe, where Jesushas gone to be with his Father, as Luke tellsus, (24: 50-53), Jesus led the disciples out asfar as Bethany, and, lifting up his hands, heblessed them. While he was blessing them, hewithdrew from them and was carried up intoheaven.
Perhaps heaven’s like a permanent holi-day? What would be your perfect holi-
day? Of course, one thing about a holidayis that it does come to an end - not always abad thing; getting away from family mightbe pleasant for a while, but before longyou’d want to have them back with you.On the other hand, if you’ve been awaywith them, you can have too much of agood thing! But, a lovely, everlasting holi-day, sounds like the ideal paradise, doesn’tit? Or does it? Jesus said to the man beingcrucified on one of the other crosses next tohim, ‘Today you will be with me in para-dise.’ This was no holiday, the place to
which Jesus was inviting the penitent thief.
We’ve never found heaven anywhere inthis universe, so it must in an alto-
gether different dimension. If we describeheaven as a purely spiritual existence, itsounds too airy-fairy, wishy-washy andquite unattractive, dare I say boring? Butwe do believe that it is far better than any-where or anything we have ever experiencedon this earth.
God created us out of love, I’m sure hewants us to be happy in this life, but he
never created a pain and worry-free paradiseon earth, because that really would make uscompletely materialistic, a trap, which is, inany case, all too easy to fall into. No, thislife, our very existence, is a training ground,to make us long for something better, tohelp us to develop the qualities and charac-ter which will enable us really to enjoy thenext life.
We are led to believe that the next lifewill be a community experience,
where there will be a lot of people: our fam-ily, our friends, those whom we have maybeadmired from a distance, and those whomwe read about in history books, (sounds abit scary to me!), so we need to learn howto get along with other people, includingthose who are quite different from thosewe’ve been used to. There may even besome whom might think of as our enemies,so we need to practice in this life how toforgive our enemies, and to accept the for-giveness of people we can’t stand, indeed,the prayer Jesus teaches us hints at it; for-give us our trespasses as we forgive thosewho trespass against us.
So, this life is all about preparation, just asJesus is preparing a place for us, (see
John 14: 1-6), so we have to play our part.How? Learn from our mistakes, learn to say

sorry and BE sorry, learn to forgive othersand learn to love God and our neighbour asourselves - that of course is the GreatCommand of Jesus. Once we learn how tolove other people, it must get easier. Thesadness is some people never even start; andlook at the end result; mindless war andbloodshed in the name, literally of Godknows what.
How does God help us to learn? It’s nouse giving people orders; God tried
that, in the Ten Commandments, andnobody took a blind bit of notice! As everyparent knows, the only way to get people tolove is to love them. But how could he getus to understand? In the end, there was only
one way to show that love, by coming toearth and living as one of us.
So let’s call this life a kindergarten of love,which is summed up in this memorable
saying: Jesus came to where we are andbecame like us, so that we might become likehim and go where he is.

film quiz in aid of our tower funds.Very well done to you both and manythanks for donating your prize win-nings back to the tower. I hope every-one who entered enjoyed the challenge!
Our bells were silent on SundayMay 1st, this being the traditional
weekend for our Norfolk ringing out-ing. Eight of us – 3 ringers, 3 spousesand 2 dogs – made our way on a coldbut mainly dry weekend to theNorfolk Broads, where we had a greattime full of fun and friendship togetherwith 17 other local ringers and weenjoyed ringing in a total of 11 towers,four of them in Norwich.
Mediaeval Norwich had 57 church-es within its city walls, and as
Norwich escaped much of the worstbombing by the Luftwaffe duringWorld War Two, 31 of the original 57still remain, although only 11 of theseare still open for worship. Many of theothers are now looked after by theChurch conservation trusts preservingthem and ensuring they are adequatelyprotected, and most of them are nowused for other purposes – arts venues,antiques markets, drop-in centres etc.In several the trusts have been keen toretain the bells and we rang in 3 ofthese while we were there – All Saints(6 bells) which has never been deconse-crated; St Michael Coslany (8) a beauti-ful elegant church now used as a gym-nastics space; and St George’s Colegate(6) which has a 200 foot high tower
standing on top of a hill in a command-ing position and which has a wisteriaintertwined on the railings on 3 sides ofthe churchyard – this must be a won-derful sight when it is fully in flower.As indeed is the wisteria on the wall ofthe cottage by our lychgate which givesso much pleasure to us and to others aswe pass by.
Ihave recently been struck by theweird terminology we ringers use
and I will try to demystify some ofthese terms in the months to come. If Imention to anyone that I ring bells,their first comment is often – “oh, right– you’re a campanologist then”. Thoseof us who ring bells always refer toourselves as ‘bell-ringers.‘Campanology’ refers to the study ofbells and bell ringing rather than theactual physical activity of pulling therope. The word campanology comesfrom the late Latin ‘campala’ meaningbell. Of course, in order to ring welland to learn new methods, a degree ofstudying is necessary, but the reverse isnot true. A campanologist may beinterested in the technology, castingand tuning of bells, their history andtraditions or perhaps in the mathemati-cal basis on which method ringingdepends. But a campanologist does notnecessarily know how to ring bells –that’s what a bell ringer does!
This month our Annual WesternDistrict Striking Competition was
held. Each tower in the district canenter one or more bands and 7 bandsentered - but we were not one of them.

At Great Gaddesden we have not beenable to field a band for many years, butwe are hopeful that with our newringers learning fast, that situation maychange in the near future. There were 7bands competing, and their performancesare marked by independent judges whoscore each row or change for accuracy.The aim of the band is to ring as evenlyas possible. Generally bells swing fullcircle about every 2 seconds, so with our6 bells striking every 2 seconds, thismeans that there should be a 1/3 secondgap between the sound of successivebells. This is what the judges are scor-ing! The winners were St Mary’sHemel Hempstead who fielded 2 bandsand came 1st and 2nd and will represent usin the County striking competition laterin the year.
Of course, the hope is that the com-petition will encourage all ringers
to improve their accuracy in striking.Local residents and passers-by who mayhave no knowledge of the complexitiesand techniques of ringing will never theless have some very strong opinionsabout whether it sounds good or not –and that is generally based on the even-ness and fluidity of the sound. So we areall being judged whether we like it ornot!
Please be assured that we all do ourvery best to make our ringing as
good as possible!

It’s hard to believe that the summerterm has come around so quicklyagain! The children are appreciatingbeing able to spend more time outsideenjoying the beautiful surroundings ofthe school and staff are always keen toget children out of the classroom andhold lessons in outside spaces wherepossible.
This month, the whole schoolembarked upon a Bluebell Walk oneafternoon which was kindly organisedby Ms Waites. Diligently prepared forthe great British weather with RainMacs, Wellies…. and Sun Cream andHats, pupils and staff enjoyed a walkthrough the fields and into the woodsto see the Bluebells.
Eleanor from Year 4 said:
I liked our Bluebell Walk. Everyone inthe juniors had someone from Infantsas our buddy and we got to chat tothem and help them if they needed it.We saw the lovely Bluebells and wewalked in some very squelchy mud.Afterwards my wellies were reallymuddy!
In Physical Education pupils arefocusing on Athletics for the summerterm, with lots of relay race practicingin readiness for Sports Day. Pupils arealso enjoying Football, Rounders’ andTennis.
This month, members of the school
community, including Mrs Comer ourhead teacher, parents and pupils, tookpart in the “RBC Race for the Kids”5K event in London in aid of GreatOrmond Street Hospital. One of ourpupils has been supported throughleukaemia treatment at GOSH thisyear and we were so proud that hemanaged to get round the wholecourse independently and complete the5K. “Team Woody for RoRo” raisedover 15k for Great Ormond StreetHospital.
Nursery and Reception have beenlearning how to create exciting similesthis month and have been looking atexamples like “As hot as the sun” or“As big as an elephant” and trying tocreate their own. One example I wasgiven by our pupils included “As kindas Miss Ayres!” which I thoughtsummed her up perfectly!
Years One and Two are studyingweather for their topic and they havebeen creating musical instruments tomake weather sounds.
In Years Three and Four pupils havebeen focusing on fractions in Mathsand looking at explanation texts inLiteracy.
This month has been SATS focused forour Year Six pupils. The first year totake the new government SATSpapers, I’m sure some of you may

have seen reactions in the media fromteaching staff and parents to thequestions set, which were consider-ably harder than in previous years.
Miss Williams our 5/6 teacher hastold me how proud she is of all of thepupils who worked so hard in thelead-up to the exams. She was espe-cially impressed with how much allof the pupils supported each otherduring SATS week, sharing support-ive words and boosting moraleamongst each other. The camaraderieand resilience they displayed duringSATs week was excellent.
I’m pleased to report we had no tearsfrom pupils, although there was somescratching of heads from Governorstrying to decipher some of theanswers to the questions!

“This half term in year 1 and 2 wehave been focusing our English workon the story ‘Monkey and Me’ byEmily Gravett. We really enjoyedrole playing the story which is about agirl and her cuddly toy monkey goingto a zoo. We monkeyed around pre-tending to be different animals, whichincluded actions and sound effects aswe recounted the story.
We even had a visitor to help inspireour writing, a monkey! Well, it wasMiss Groves dressed as a monkey.
We became authors of our own‘Monkey and Me’ stories this half temwhen we wrote mini books. Wedesigned and created the front coverfor our books. We then studies blurbsfrom other books before writing ourown. As well as writing, we drewillustrations to accompany our sto-ries.”

Gaddesden Estate NewsGaddesden Estate NewsThe crops continue to look well, and
work continues with fungicides andnitrogen as required. With the change-able weather we are having, this can bea tricky job, catching the dry spells in-between the showers.
This nurturing of the farm and constantsupervision of the plants to identifyoutbreaks of fungal diseases isabsolutely vital to enable us to producea high quality, clean and saleable prod-uct at harvest time.
Within the farmyard, we are currentlyreplacing the roof of our main grainstore. It was built in 1970 and theasbestos-cement sheeting has becomeporous over the past 45 years or so, andrain has onto the stored grain. It is ajob we had put off for several years,but have now put in place, and allshould be ready for harvest.
We were honoured to host the AGMof the Herts and Middlesex Branch ofthe Country Land and BusinessAssociation (CLA), the first time forabout 15 years. Seventy local farmers,land managers and professionals weregiven a conducted tour, on tractors andtrailers, of the Gaddesden Estate, incor-porating stops at The Home Farm,Gaddesden Place Stables, WhitehouseBusiness Centre and Upperwood FarmStud, concluding with lunch in one ofthe grain stores.
On the general estate maintenance side,we have now replaced the windows inthree properties, to bring them up to asatisfactory EPC. We are doing internaland external decoration on some othersand also re-roofing work. When theseare complete, we hope to draw breath,before we embark on any further largemaintenance projects!
Ride members are reminded thatrenewal starts from 1st June. The firstmonthly “Park & Ride” took place inApril; afterwards we had some gratify-ingly appreciative emails and post onour Facebook page! Our new signagesystem was particularly appreciated.
There is no news to report on theforestry side, as we are still in the handsof Natural England. The wood wehave thinned over the past five or sixyears are responding well and puttingon volume. In many cases the canopiesare closing up.
However we hope to do some thinningof our Farm Woodland Scheme blockslater in the summer, and maybe somefelling in the woods as well. We con-tinue to work on the control of thevery damaging pest the Grey Squirrel,as well and culling deer numbers.
