The Royal’s name refers to a celebrated visit by that most regal of figures, Queen Victoria. Her faithful servant and confidant, John Brown, accompanied her and signed the guest register.

Today, this delightful 18th century coaching inn enjoys a regal reputation for serving fine food and wine - not to mention a choice of 170 single malt whiskeys.

Locally sourced ingredients are central to the menus created by Chef Patron David Milsom, which can be enjoyed in the restaurant, the lounge, or the brasserie - with lovely views of the surrounding hills. On warm days, the walled garden is a delight. Beautifully appointed bedrooms feature furniture made by local craftsmen; suites are graced with stately four-poster beds, whilst rich fabrics and antiques create restful havens. The Perthshire Highlands, great golf, walking and fishing are on the doorstep; Edinburgh and Glasgow are but a short carriage-ride away.

The Horseshoe InnEddleston, by PeeblesPatrick and Vivienne Bardoulet

Traditional Scottish hospitality meets gourmet Gallic cuisine at The Horseshoe Inn. The flower-filled urns and charming horse-shoe shaped windows give visitors just a hint of the character and quality to be found inside the doors of this former blacksmith’s ‘smiddy’.

Since 2005, husband and wife team Patrick and Vivienne Bardoulet have transformed The Horseshoe Inn into one of Scotland’s top Restaurant with Rooms. As proud holders of 3 AA Rosettes, an EatScotland Gold Award and a former AA Restaurant of the Year, Patrick uses the Scottish Larder to the full in both the Fine Dining Bardoulet’s Restaurant and the more informal Bistro. The former Victorian Primary School houses the 8 individually furnished rooms which have recently been refurbished to a high standard and include luxury bedding and furnishings with complementary WI-FI. Located only 30 minutes south of Edinburgh and 5 minutes north of Peebles in the Scottish Borders, The Horseshoe Inn is the perfect base for walking, cycling, golfing or fishing on the magnificent River Tweed.

The Rose & CrownRomaldkirk, TeesdaleChris and Alison Davy

Overlooking not one, but three village greens, medieval stocks, a Saxon Church and charming stone built cottages – it’s certainly a case of location, location, location for the Rose & Crown in the picture-perfect setting of Romaldkirk in Teesdale.

Since 1733 the Inn has been a central feature of this lovely village; under the inspired and experienced ownership of Chris and Alison Davy, it remains a popular venue for locals and visitors alike - with its polished panelling, oak settles, old prints, gleaming brasses and a huge open fire.

The twelve en-suite bedrooms are individually decorated and furnished, featuring luxury fabrics and Bose music systems. In the main house, rooms boast period features, some with exposed beams and antique furniture, while the Courtyard Rooms are more contemporary in style.

Menus in both the candlelit Brasserie and the fine-dining Restaurant celebrate local and regional produce, complemented by a wide selection of wines and real ales.

The PheasantBassenthwaite, CumbriaBarbara and Matthew Wylie

A charming old coaching inn nestled in a peaceful setting close to Bassenthwaite Lake, The Pheasant dates back over 500 years; it is one of the last remaining traditional Cumbrian hostelries and exudes a peaceful, period atmosphere.

The huntsman John Peel, celebrated in legend and song, enjoyed many a pint in The Pheasant’s tap room, whilst the artist Edward Thompson, when unable to pay his considerable drinks bill, handed over two of his watercolours instead – and they still hang in the bar today. The Inn’s new bistro offers a rustic homely style of food in a relaxed atmosphere, perfectly complementing the well established fine dining restaurant, now elegantly located to enjoy gorgeous views across the garden and forest beyond. The individually decorated bedrooms and suites combine understated luxury with modern comforts, fine fabrics and antiques. In the lounge, the draw of comfy sofas and log fires make it almost impossible to resist the temptation of cosy afternoon teas. All in all, The Pheasant continues to fly very high indeed.

The Blue LionWensleydale, North YorkshirePaul and Helen Klein

The Blue Lion is a rare beast: a rural inn that remains true to its roots – the stone flagged bar features the original highbacked wooden bench seats and a massive log fire – and blackboard menus that reflect an abundance of local produce.

The Blue Lion is the pride of East Witton: the front door overlooks the rectangular village green, a wooded hillside rises steeply to meet the moors above and the River Ure flows through the peaceful valley. This is a walker’s paradise and few pleasures beat touring Wensleydale and Swaledale. The towering stone walls of Richard III’s Middleham Castle dominate this end of the dale, whilst the Black Sheep Brewery tempts many a visitor. Brilliant bar meals are complemented by fine hand-pulled beers, the candlelit restaurant is the perfect setting for the acclaimed menu and the inn’s comfortable, stylish rooms provide a real retreat.

So, forget the safari, search out the Blue Lion instead and put your life on paws.

The Yorke ArmsRamsgill, North YorkshireFrances and Bill Atkins

The Yorkes blazed a colourful trail through history. Sir Richard Yorke was knighted by Henry VII. His grandson was knighted by Edward VI before being thrown into the Tower by Mary Tudor. Sir Edward Yorke repelled the Armada before circumnavigating the world.

You could circumnavigate the world many times before you found a place as lovely as the Yorke Arms: built in 1813 as the coaching house and shooting lodge for the nearby manor house, the beautiful stone building overlooks Ramsgill village green, surrounded by magnificent Dales countryside. Named after local game birds, rooms are dressed in sophisticated colour schemes and luxurious fabrics. The Yorke Arms’ towering reputation for fine dining rests on the outstanding fare that emerges from Frances Atkins’ kitchen. Her creative approach and deft touch, combined with seasonal produce from Yorkshire’s abundant larder and specialist suppliers, have earned a Michelin star for eight years running. All in all, this truly is a great inn.

Grassington HouseGrassington, North YorkshireSue and John Rudden

His own hand-reared rare breed pigs and fresh laid eggs from Snow White and Cinderella (Cherryvalley ducks!) are just two examples of John Rudden’s passion for using the very best ingredients to create his award winning menus - with impeccable ‘field to fork’ credentials.

Grassington is a picture-perfect village in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales: the cobbled market square in front of the Hotel is alive with shops, cafés and tearooms – a magnet for visitors to the area’s picturesque rolling hills and river valleys.

Since 2008 John and Sue Rudden have transformed Grassington House into an informal, relaxed, yet very stylish inn. John’s culinary skills shine in the 2 AA Rosette restaurant – 5 The Square, whilst Sue’s touch is evident throughout the 9 individually designed luxury rooms. Italian lighting and fabrics are combined with designer furnishings and rooms range from the contemporary chic of the Red Room to the cosy Georgian Cottage Room. Second floor rooms have memorable views over the spectacular surrounding countryside.

The Boar’s Head Ripley, North YorkshireSir Thomas and Lady Ingilby

The Ingilbys have received visitors at Ripley Castle for 700 years. Some, like Oliver Cromwell, were highly unwelcome: the rebel general found himself held at pistol point by ‘Trooper Jane’ Ingilby in the castle library!

The Boar’s Head refers to the ferocious animal killed by a 14th century ancestor while it was attacking Edward III: instead of becoming an overnight celebrity the boar ended up as the main course at that night’s banquet. Today’s guests will find the atmosphere rather more welcoming! Many of the Inn’s very comfortable bedrooms overlook the village’s cobbled market square and historic church, others have views of the garden. The restaurant is featured in most of the best known food guides and the bar/bistro is a lovely place for an informal meal in welcoming surroundings. Overnight guests get free tickets to visit the Castle and its beautiful walled gardens, deer park and grounds. Ripley is located in lovely countryside, just 3 miles from Harrogate and on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales National Park.

The Feversham Arms & Verbena SpaNorth YorkshireSimon and Jill Rhatigan

Having spent 5 years at Le Manoir aux Quat’Saisons followed by Seaham Hall and The Samling, Simon pitched up in Helmsley, a beautiful market town on the edge of the North Yorkshire Moors, complete with a Castle, stately home and impressive walled garden. Full of period charm, the Feversham Arms was originally a coaching inn which was rebuilt and renamed by the Earl of Feversham in 1855. Today, it’s affectionately known as ‘The Fev’ and offers 33 luxurious bedrooms (including 22 suites), a stunning two storey reception, library, an outdoor heated pool and the award-winning Verbena Spa. The Hotel, voted AA Hotel of the Year in 2009/2010, is also renowned for its excellent food, much of which is sourced from specialist local suppliers.

Shibden Mill InnShibden, West YorkshireSimon and Caitlin Heaton

A special welcome is reserved for guinea-pigs at Shibden Mill Inn! And they flock here every month to take part in the Inn’s hugely popular ‘Guinea Pig Nights’, when guests taste and try new recipes prepared by the Head Chef and his team!

In the restaurant, Head Chef Darren Parkinson’s inspired menus combine with original oak beams and candlelit tables to create a special, romantic atmosphere; the award-winning food can also be enjoyed in the cosy bar or, during warm weather, in the lovely riverside gardens.

The 17th century Inn is steeped in history and beautifully located in the stunning Shibden Valley, close to Halifax. Built as a corn mill, used as a spinning mill and converted to an inn in 1859, Shibden Mill has been carefully coaxed into the 21st century by owners Simon and Caitlin Heaton, with General Manager Glen Pearson.

Eleven super-stylish en-suite rooms and the splendid Bower Suite complete the idyllic picture.

The Inn at WhitewellForest of Bowland, LancashireCharles Bowman

Dating from the 1300s, The Inn at Whitewell was originally home to the Keeper of the King’s royal hunting Forest of Bowland; 700 years on, a warm welcome continues to be extended to guests in pursuit of top class food, wine and lodgings.

The Millstone at MellorMellor, LancashireAnson and Sarah Bolton

Anson was the original Bolton Wanderer - until he fell in love with Sarah and returned to his native Lancashire. A career chef since school, his culinary skills were honed at some of London’s top hotels and the worlds’ most luxurious cruise liners.

Having waved goodbye to the sea, Anson took over the rudder as Chef Patron at the Millstone, a delightful restaurant with rooms in a peaceful hilltop village between Preston and Blackburn. Anson’s inventiveness in the kitchen has earned a strong local following and 2 AA red rosettes; he works closely with local suppliers and favourites include Morecambe Bay potted shrimps and Pendle Lamb. Unsurprisingly, the Millstone hosts regular foodie events and evenings. Rooms are wonderfully comfortable, using sumptuous fabrics and fine linen. All have beautifully appointed bathrooms and the suites feature cosy sitting areas.

And, whilst Anson may have left the sea, this Bolton will always be a Wanderer - and he has the season ticket to prove it!

The White Hart at LydgateLydgate, LancashireCharles Brierley

Charles Brierley first became acquainted with The White Hart as a child, when he attended the adjacent Sunday School. Having ventured next door to satisfy his thirst for knowledge he was found out – and thrown out - after just one pint!

Years later, Charles returned, as the owner of The White Hart, which was built in 1788 to offer respite to travellers heading across the Pennine hills. He has restored the Inn, and the faith of food-lovers, by bringing award-winning cuisine and hospitality to this dramatic location. Fabulous food is served in the informal brasserie or the two AA rosette restaurant, whilst today’s weary travellers will find comfort in the twelve individually styled bedrooms with luxury bathrooms. The impressive new Oak Room is the perfect choice for weddings, parties and events. And Charles isn’t the only one to have been tempted by the excellent beer – the BBC’s famous Last of the Summer Wine series was based on three characters who frequented the popular locals’ bar!

Ye Olde Bull’s HeadBeaumaris, Isle of AngleseyDavid Robertson and Keith Rothwell

‘The Bull’ has been a feature of Beaumaris since 1472: it was rebuilt in 1617 and Cromwellian General Mytton occupied it during the Civil War. At one time it was a Quaker meeting house - they clearly enjoyed the ‘oat cuisine.’

Later guests included Charles Dickens and Samuel Johnson; much later – in 1987 in fact – David Robertson and Keith Rothwell took The Bull by the horns and it continues to be a favourite meeting place for locals and visitors alike. The Bull’s 13 ensuite bedrooms feature stylish décor and antique furnishings, whilst the adjacent, recently opened Town House offers an additional 13 contemporary rooms styled around bold colours.

The Bull’s roots as a medieval coaching inn are clearly evident in the bar, with its oak beams, the old ducking stool and a welcoming open fire. The Brasserie and the Hayloft restaurant combine striking interior design with ancient features and enjoy enviable reputations in their own right. The award-winning cuisine takes its lead from the finest Anglesey and seasonal produce: fantastic fodder, by anyone’s standards!

Barnsdale LodgeOakham, RutlandThe Hon. Thomas Noel

Rutland is England’s smallest county and, of its 16 square miles, some 30,000 acres is under Rutland Water: on the north shore of the lake is Barnsdale Lodge, part of the Exton Park Estate, which has been home of the Earls of Gainsborough since 1760.

Barnsdale Lodge is arranged around a lovely large courtyard; filled with trees and fragrant flowers it’s a wonderful place to meet, dine and generally unwind. The charming bedrooms surround the courtyard and many have idyllic views across the surrounding countryside. Superb dining features local specialities, ingredients from Barnsdales’ kitchen garden and eggs from their hens – whilst the freshly baked bread and pastries from the traditional wood-fired ovens of Hambleton Bakery are something of a speciallity. The historic market towns of Stamford, Oakham and Uppingham are minutes away and Rutland Water offers an excellent choice of outdoor activities. The proprietor, the Hon. Thomas Noel, loves flying helicopters and says that he ’occasionally drops into the hotel’: we’re fairly sure he doesn’t mean that literally.

The Hundred House was previously a rent collector’s house and courthouse, complete with ducking pond and stocks. Some things don’t change. Cases are still heard - few sounds please the ear more than a case of fine wine en route from the cellar.

This charming hotel lies amidst rolling countryside close to the beautiful Severn Valley and Ironbridge Gorge.

The Hotel interiors are embellished throughout with herbs and flowers grown in the lovely gardens, where guests are welcome to wander amongst unusual roses, trees, herbaceous plants and over 100 varieties of herbs – used extensively in the kitchens. Head Chef, Stuart Phillips, has two AA Rosettes for his imaginative cuisine. The distinctive bar and restaurant feature mellow brick, stained glass, Jacobean wood panelling and cosy log fires. Above are ten sumptuous bedrooms fragrant with lavender-scented sheets and some with velvet-seated swings attached to the old oak beams! The Hoste ArmsBurnham Market, NorfolkJeanne Whittome

The Hoste Arms is where the Great Inns of Britain first began – and this wonderful inn, overlooking the beautiful Burnham Market Green and close to the wild North Norfolk coast, continues to set the benchmark for hospitality, service and style.

Built in 1550 as the manor house of Burnham Westgate, the building served time as a court house, livestock market, art gallery and brothel before welcoming its first guests as an inn in 1651! Today’s guests bask in the country house ambience, from the cosy front bar, panelled dining room and 35 sumptuous bedrooms, to the light filled conservatory, pretty walled garden and stylish Moroccan themed terrace. Jeanne Whittome, Emma Tagg and Andrew McPherson continue in the footsteps of The Hoste’s visionary founder, the late Paul Whittome, in creating the ultimate convivial inn specialising in local, seasonal food and service of the highest standard. The Hoste is a gem of an inn – the jewel in North Norfolk’s crown.

Personally selected by proprietor, and Master of Wine, John Hoskins, the Old Bridge wine list has been declared the best in the UK by Egon Ronay and Harpers’ Wine Trade Journal; in 2010 the Hotel was awarded the AA wine award for the second time.

But every year is a vintage year at the Old Bridge: a handsome 18th century building in an idyllic location overlooking the River Ouse, the friendly, relaxed atmosphere is a well-rounded blend of town-house hotel and traditional inn. There’s an elegant panelled private dining room and lounge, both dressed with fine fabrics and artwork, the informal Terrace restaurant and a welcoming bar. The 24 luxurious bedrooms, individually styled by Julia Hoskins, range from traditional four-poster luxury to Scandinavian minimalism. The Old Bridge Wine Shop sells wonderful wines for everyday drinking through to rare and mature vintages; a choice of 24 wines is available to taste everyday. All these ingredients have farm to fork credentials of the highest pedigree and are put to fantastic use by Head Chef Claire Nicholls, who creates the award-winning menus at Castle House Restaurant and Castle Bistro. The King’s Head InnBledington, OxfordshireArchie and Nicola Orr-Ewing

Archie Orr-Ewing saw five years’ service with the Blues and Royals: where he led, princes followed. As a member of the regimental ski team his career went rapidly downhill when he spent most of his time on the piste … the perfect qualification for an innkeeper!

The King’s Head Inn is close to Stow on the Wold, deep in the heart of the Cotswolds. Overlooking Bledington’s village green, the Inn is a converted cider house dating back to the late 1500s; the Cotswold stone walls, old oak beams and flagstone floors and inglenook fireplace create a stunning interior. The 12 gorgeous guest rooms retain their charming 16th century characteristics, blended with a contemporary edge and all modern comforts. The Inn’s restaurant is renowned for its imaginative menus which include Aberdeen Angus beef from the family farm, home-grown vegetables from nearby Evesham Vale and fresh bread from Daylesford Organic. Whether you are escaping from the blues - or the royals - set your sights on the King’s Head.

The Pier HotelHarwich, EssexPaul and Geraldine Milsom

Paul Milsom, a fanatical surfer, has been making waves at The Pier for many years. Together with his interior designer wife, Geraldine, they’ve found the Quay to success in this stylish, harbour-side gem, with its two restaurants and sparkling champagne bar .

Standing proudly on the Harwich quayside, where the Stour and Orwell meet and the fishing boats deliver their daily catch to the Hotel, The Pier is beautifully restored, with a nautical theme throughout. The Harbourside is a celebrated seafood restaurant – with amazing views – which is complemented by the Ha’Penny brasserie on the ground floor.

The fourteen individually styled en-suite bedrooms are dressed with crisp linen and fluffy towels – and many also have splendid views over the harbour. milsomsDedham, EssexPaul and Geraldine Milsom

Owner Paul Milsom has happy memories of this grand house; originally purchased by his grandparents in 1959, it was later sold to an insurance company. When, a few years later, the insurers ran for cover, the Milsoms gladly claimed it back.

Paul and his wife, Geraldine, set to work, skilfully converting the grand Victorian country house into milsoms, a stylish bar/brasserie with fifteen comfortable, contemporary bedrooms. Food at milsoms is created by Chef Director Stas Anastasiades, his influences are taken from around the world but his creative menus always use lots of local and seasonal produce and have earned an AA Rosette. Seating in the restaurant is on 2 levels and leads out on to a fabulous terrace and extensive manicured gardens. A huge ‘sail’ canopy and outdoor heaters make outdoor dining a reality for much of the year. And, if you can judge the quality of an inn by the premium cars in the car park, then milsoms is up there with the best.

The Bell InnHorndon on the Hill, EssexJohn and Christine Vereker

The Bell Inn had something of a chequered early history. Built in 1553 on a local high point, from where you can see the Thames, the low point of the Inn’s history was the burning of the Lord of the Manor for heresy!

In the middle ages pilgrims and wool merchants would stay here until low water when they could cross the river at Higham’s Causeway, although whether or not some of those early travellers would now recognise the five magnificent suites is a moot point. They may well recognise the names of the bedrooms though - all famous mistresses in history whose personalities are reflected in the rooms’ lavish and witty decor.

The building’s impressive architecture includes the courtyard (awash in summer with magnificent flowers), balcony and archway entrance. Renowned as a ‘real social centre of village life’, The Bell has a wonderfully welcoming atmosphere; the bars, with oak panelling, flagstone floors and an open fire, serve a wide selection of well kept real ales and fantastic wines, whilst the impressive menu frequently features local specialities.
