A Queen is Crowned
InFebruary1952,forthefirsttimesince1837, the UK was welcoming a young Queen on to the throne.
The1953coronationwasthesubjectofimmensenationalenthusiasm.Manypeople’s first experience of television came when they crowded into a neighbour’s living room to gaze at a tiny black and white picture, carrying live imagesfromWestminsterAbbey.
Thecoronationwasalsofilmedincolour,with narration by Sir Laurence Olivier, and distributed to cinemas around the country in a matter of days.
See this souvenir from history on the big screen at the Compass, just as it was seen in cinemas up and down the UK in 1953.
