As the Greater Burlington Partnership moves forward to implement its Talent Pipeline initiative, a new Workforce Advisory Council has been

convened to guide the work. Led by private sector employers in partnership with K-12 and higher education along with area non-profits engaged in youth development programs, this new advisory team has already demonstrated great vision. Our first few meetings resulted in the creation of an Action Plan that is now being implemented. Here are the highlights:

Purpose StatementTo develop our area’s future workforce by providing students and their families with a deeper understanding of career opportunities and aligning skills with current workforce needs; engaging employers directly with students, education and training providers; and better aligning programs and curriculum to the realities of the SE Iowa economy.

Main objectives • Improve the ability to recruit a skilled and able local workforce • Provide an avenue for area businesses and educational institutions to effectively work together and understand each other’s needs and processes • Maintain an Advisory Council structure that is inclusive and encourages collaboration between higher education institutions, K-12 educators and business leaders • Pursue heightened engagement from more schools in the area, including the homeschool community • Ensure that tracking is in place to measure impact of all projects

The Approach • Provide tools that help students discover their interests and aptitudes to help guide their school and career choices • Change the conversation from “where do I want to go to college?” to “what do I want to do?” • Provide tools that help students develop work-ready and marketable skills while in high school, then pursue a higher education path • Align programs and tools with high demand, good pay opportunities in the local marketplace

Proposed Projects/Activities for 2019 - 20: (Theme – Heighten Visibility “The Future You”) • Support STEM Festival – February 22, 2020 • 5th & 8th Grade Career Exploration Days – March 16 - 18, 2020 • Senior Signing Day – May/June, 2020 • 30 Under 30 – Trained Young Professional Speakers Bureau – operational January, 2020 • Careers promotional video project – featuring area businesses and in-demand careers • Complete and distribute Workforce Asset Inventory Report (identify Tools/Resources and Programs/Initiatives in place in Des Moines County, including business, education and non-profits) • Pilot - CEO in Classroom to 8th grade – Fall 2019 – business executives engage with 8th grade students to encourage them to think about their career choices and how their decisions in high school will open opportunities to them after graduation Additional projects to pursue when the above is assured: • Teacher Externships – Summer 2020 • Pilot a Guided Pathway and/or credential program with an area high school and assess impact • Mentors to students with emphasis of identified career fields

If you are interested in learning more about the Workforce Advisory Council and how to be involved, please feel free to reach out to Della Schmidt.

ON THE COVER 100 Year Anniversary Sneak Peek

In 2020, the Chamber of Commerce will observe its 100th Anniversary. While much has changed over the past 100 years, one thing has stayed the same: The Chamber of Commerce has always been and will always be a steadfast supporter of members and the community.

To celebrate this milestone achievement, the Chamber of Commerce plans to honor the storied past and bright future through a combination of ways throughout the year. Starting in January, you will begin to see new and exciting things rolled out. While we won’t spoil what is in store, there are a lot of exciting initiatives on the horizon. Consider this month’s cover a sneak peek into what is to come next year.

This month, we have created what a photo of 100 years ago would have looked like with the current Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors.

Why did you join YP? I joined YP to meet new individuals, learn more about our local businesses and get more involved in the community. I enjoy the opportunity YP provides to socialize with people from different backgrounds and professions...I have met so many new people! YP also provides so many great learning opportunities like the Lunch & Learns, Business Tours and the conferences. I have learned quite a bit more about our community businesses through attending these events.

Which community organizations/events do you volunteer for? I volunteer with several organizations and events in the community, which include Great River Home Health and Hospice (cooking meals for the families there visiting loved ones), Milestones Area Agency on Aging (Meals on Wheels), Salvation Army (bell ringing, Toy Shop set up at Christmas, helping with their move to the new building), Junior Achievement of the Heartland, Kiwanis (Shamrock Shuffle), Burlington RAGBRAI, Rotary Club chicken dinner help, Greater Burlington Partnership events (Ribbon Cuttings, Business After Hours, Teacher Appreciation), The Homestead 1839/Des Moines County Master Gardeners (Pop-up Farmers Market), and Paint-A-Thon.

Unique about me: I am not sure if this makes me unique or just odd, but I have a habit of randomly breaking out in song. It might be an actual song, or one that I make up as I am completing a task or activity.

The 2019 Manufacturer of the Year opened the Burlington based flagship location for the worldwide company in 2016. As the largest can company in North America, Silgan has been making cans for over 100 years. With over 15 large customers, they ship cans all over the east coast, the Midwest and Canada.

Here in the Burlington facility, Silgan produces over 5 million cans a day while continuously working on ways to improve and increase production. They lead the company in WEIs (waste eliminations) and hold kaizen and mini-kaizen events involving all employees to solve issues.

While being a world leader in can manufacturing, Silgan takes pride in its employees. They rotate mechanics around to learn as much machinery as possible. In addition, they develop their own electricians with PLC training, hold annual week-long training sessions at the beginning of the year to ensure completion, and promote from within at all levels through continuous

development. They do this through a management trainee program as well as tuition

reimbursement for employees interested in furthering their careers. Furthermore, safety of their workers is of the utmost importance. Silgan has never had a lost time accident, and their frequency rate has been well below 1 over the past 3 years.

To them, community involvement is key. This company is involved through sponsorships, volunteers and support in many area activities. A few examples are Burlington Steamboat Days, Burlington Noon Lion’s Oktoberfest, Burlington Bees, Chamber of Commerce Golf Classic, Burlington Greyhounds and being a Partnering for the Future Platinum Sponsor.

Please help us honor a company that is not only a world leader in their industry, but a tremendous asset to our community. Congratulations to Silgan Containers, the 2019 Manufacturer of the Year!

Hello, everyone in Greater Burlington! I’ve missed you this year, but I’m back and ready to play! Starting Saturday, November 30, I will be hiding in some awesome area businesses and leaving clues for you to find me. If you can solve my riddles and figure out where I am that day, you’ll be entered to win a prize! Better yet, come find me in person, take an “Elfie” (I LOVE THEM!) and post them under that day's riddle on the Greater Burlington Partnership’s Facebook

page for an ADDITIONAL chance to win. You’re going to want to come find me in person; there’s a reason I picked these amazing stores. I’m going to put in a good word with the big guy and have them certified as “Officially Santa Approved!” Anyway, I need to get back to planning my shenanigans. See you soon!

Yours in Mischief,
