He helped establish geological studies and investigations in India, specifically at the Institute of Himalayan Geology, which was renamed in 1976 after him as the Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology. His textbook on the Geology of India, first published in 1919, continues to be in use. Officials at the Jammu University said that the estab- lishment of the Museum and naming it after Wadia will be the first ever recognition and tribute to the great geologist for his contribution not only for the nation but for Jammu and Kashmir as well. “He carried most of his research in the Himalayan region, collecting rocks and fossils”, they recalled adding that even he wrote his renowned book, which is still one of the prime books for geology students in Jammu. “Vice-Chancellor of the University Prof Mohan Pal Isher is very keen to have the Museum established at the earliest and if every thing goes well we will open it for public by June this year”, officials, who preferred not to be named, said. Separate studies on impact of bidi smoking on lung and oral can- cers and cancers of larynx and hypo pharynx in men in the 30-84 age group in Karunagappally of Kollam district showed that bidi – unfiltered tobacco flakes rolled in tendu leaf and tied with thread was among the most harmful smoking products. The cohort study on bidi and lung cancer, covering 65,829 men, found bidi smokers had a 3.9-fold increase in lung cancer incidence compared to those who never smoked bidis. Dr P Jayalekshmi of Region- al Cancer Centre and principal author of the studies, said "Main- stream smoke of bidi has a much higher concentration of carcino- genic hydrocarbons. Bidi smokers also are found to take five puffs per minute compared to two by cigarettes in the same time. All these contribute to increasing the carcinogenic nature of bidi smoke." NB- 3345 Sd/- Dy Chief Executive Officer, KVIB (K.D). 006 DIGVIJAY DEFENDS SANJAY DUTT New Delhi, Mar 24: Congress leader Digvijay Singh today came out in strong support of actor Sanjay Dutt, sentenced under the Arms Act in the 1993 Mumbai blast case, saying he had commit- ted the crime at a "young age". "Sanjay Dutt is not a criminal, he is not a terrorist. Sanjay Dutt, at a young age, in the atmosphere of that time, thought that perhaps the way Sunil Dutt had been rais- ing his voice against communal- ism and favoured the minori- ties, then perhaps he could be attacked," Singh, an AICC General Secretary, told reporters here. "So as an obvious reaction of a kid to do something, if he has committed a mistake then I feel that he has undergone the pun- ishment for it," he said. Singh's remarks come in the wake of support for Sanjay Dutt from a number of politicians and film personalities who want the actor to be pardoned. The Supreme Court had on Thursday sentenced the actor to five years in jail after upholding his conviction under Arms Act for illegally possessing prohib- ited weapons including an AK-56 rifle, which was part of the con- signment of weapons and explo- sives brought to India for the 1993 coordinated serial blasts in Mumbai by Dawood Ibrahim and associates. men, found bidi smokers had a 3.9-fold increase in lung cancer incidence compared to those who never smoked bidis. Dr P Jayalekshmi of Region-al Cancer Centre and principal author of the studies, said "Main-stream smoke of bidi has a much higher concentration of carcino-genic hydrocarbons. Bidi smokers also are found to take five puffs per minute compared to two by cigarettes in the same time. All these contribute to increasing the carcinogenic nature of bidi smoke." (PTI)

DigviJay DeFeNDs saNJay Dutt new Delhi, mar 24: Congress leader Digvijay Singh today came out in strong support of actor Sanjay Dutt, sentenced under the Arms Act in the 1993 Mumbai blast case, saying he had commit-ted the crime at a "young age". "Sanjay Dutt is not a criminal, he is not a terrorist. Sanjay Dutt, at a young age, in the atmosphere of that time, thought that perhaps the way Sunil Dutt had been rais-ing his voice against communal-

ism and favoured the minori-ties, then perhaps he could be attacked," Singh, an AICC General Secretary, told reporters here. "So as an obvious reaction of a kid to do something, if he has committed a mistake then I feel that he has undergone the pun-ishment for it," he said. Singh's remarks come in the wake of support for Sanjay Dutt from a number of politicians and film personalities who want the

actor to be pardoned. The Supreme Court had on Thursday sentenced the actor to five years in jail after upholding his conviction under Arms Act for illegally possessing prohib-ited weapons including an AK-56 rifle, which was part of the con-signment of weapons and explo-sives brought to India for the 1993 coordinated serial blasts in Mumbai by Dawood Ibrahim and associates.
