We are sorry we can’t accept your donaons at this me.
Please do not bring items to the Senior Center.
Thank you for helping us protect each other.
TBND* “The Building Next Door” — Formerly Chemical Bank
THE CENTER IS CLOSED
to group programming, activities,
and meetings until further notice.
See page 2 for more details.

PLANS FOR REOPENING THE CENTER
The Center is in frequent contact with the Berrien County
Health Department, County and State Officials to take
appropriate precauons and implement strategic phases in
reopening. Decisions will be made about future closures based
on informaon from BCHD and the State of Michigan if staff,
volunteers, or a member becomes ill. While we miss all of you
tremendously, we don’t want to take 1 step forward and 3
backwards! Things will be different moving forward unl there
is a vaccine or cure. Please be paent.

At the me of this prinng, the Center’s phase 1 of reopening
began June 15. During Phase 1, we can offer only basic,
essenal services. There will be no INPERSON programming,
groups, or acvies. Please only come to the Center if you
have an appointment or for a specific service. While you are
here, pracce social distancing and wear a mask. Thank you for
your faithfulness, perseverance, grace, and understanding as
we learn, lead, and navigate through this new landscape.

To maintain social distancing we will have to be creave. Taxes
may require a temperature taken at the door and you waing
while they are being prepared in another room. To ensure
each area is cleaned and ready for the next day we are
currently unable to host groups. Many programs are cancelled
due to the number of parcipants and the inability to social
distance properly during the acvity.

We have received calls about “booking rooms and dates this
summer” which we cannot accommodate. We don’t have a
date when program groups or outside groups will be able to
resume meeng. While this may be frustrang, we have to
remain diligent in minimizing the traffic flow inside the Center
during phase 1. Providing essenal services is our top priority.
If your group is meeng remotely and you would like to share
that informaon, please contact the Center at 6839380.

Income Taxes for Niles & Buchanan Senior Centers
We had hoped to prepare taxes at Niles Senior Center at
TBND*(formerly Chemical bank). The AARP tax aide
program is a naonwide, volunteer program. They assess
data reported for COVID19 on a connuous basis in
granng permission which sites are allowed to open up
and which sites must remain closed. This IS NOT A
SENIOR CENTER decision. The Senior Centers’ are only
the “hosts” to this wonderful service provided year a4er
year. These are unsure mes that affect a lot of people
and we understand many are frustrated. Please seek an
alternave for your income taxes. (Paid preparers)
Unfortunately, we have no guarantee or assurance our
site will be one of the Michigan sites granted permission
to open.

Drumming with Liz! Starts August 4th
Tuesdays at 9:00 a.m. & 10:00 a.m.
This class will be held OUTSIDE behind our

rhythm, and movement for physical fitness that is
fun and crea ve. Please wear a mask/face covering
upon arrival. Masks will NOT be required during the
class. Water is not provided at this me, feel free to
bring your own. To ensure social distancing, each
class is limited to 10 par cipants, not including the
instructor. Please call the center at 6839380 to
register for the 9am or 10am class.

need.* I work through Lakeland Health Services and am
happy to provide this service for you if you can no longer
perform it for yourself.

The cost of your first visit is $30. At this visit you receive

board and a manicure sck. These items are yours to
keep and you will bring them with you each me you
come for a nail clipping. Each subsequent visit is $25.

If you are interested, call the senior center for an
appointment. The only other thing you need to bring is
a towel (for drying you feet a4er soaking). Did I
menon that a4er I clip your nails you get a free foot
massage as part of the package? Some paents say this
is the BEST part of the appointment!

VOTE YES FOR RENEWAL OF
SENIOR CENTERS PROPOSAL
On August 4
th
voters in Berrien County
will be vong to connue the millage
that supports our Senior Centers for
another 4 years. The seven Senior Centers in Berrien
County are largely funded by this millage, which is based
on your property tax value

A “YES” vote will support our Senior Centers so we can
connue to provide you with services like
transportaon, cards and games, social events,
commodies, loan closet, Medicare & Medicaid
assistance, health and wellness classes, daily lunches,
educaonal programs, and so much more.

During the past few months, the Senior Centers have
had to limit direct services due to the COVID19 virus.
However, most are planning to reopen safely over the
next few months to get back to services we have been
providing over the years! We hope that you will be able
to come enjoy the acvies and events at each Senior
Center very soon.

How much does this cost? First, this is a connuaon of
the same amount that Berrien County Property
Taxpayers have been paying. That is $.30 cents per each
$1,000 of the Taxable Value of the property or.3 mills.
For example, if your home has a property assessment of
$100,000, your contribuon for the seven Senior
Centers is approximately $30 a year. Each Senior
Center receives 1/7 of the total amount collected by the
County.

Please votewhether in person or by Absentee ballot.
An Applicaon for Absentee Ballot will be mailed to you
by the clerk for the city or township where you are
registered to vote. Or, you can complete the applicaon
online on the website of the municipality you live in.

When you receive the official balloteither by mail or
at the polls, PLEASE mark YES for the millage to support
the Senior Centers. And PLEASE pass along this message
to your friends and relaves!
Please vote “YES” Tuesday, August 4

Opera6on COVID Cheer
Operaon COVID Cheer was born
out of a desire to get in touch with
isolated senior cizens who receive
services from places like the
Center. The public is invited to send
cards, leOers and artwork so staff
can distribute to seniors during this difficult me of
physical distancing.
Please send cards, artwork, and le9ers to:
Niles Senior Center
AOn: Jennifer Krueger
1109 Bell Rd.
Niles, MI 49120

This is a much needed, simple way to spread cheer to
area seniors who may be having a hard me. Staff will
distribute random pieces of artwork, cards, & leOers
throughout the summer.

Thanks to those who have already sent cards for our
area seniors!
