Greater Otago Model United Nations; or GOMUN, is the Otago region’s new, exciting, high school event. It will be Otago region’s first event held outside of Dunedin. It will be held in Queenstown, and is open to all high school students in the UN Youth Otago region.

A Model United Nations gives young New Zealanders the opportunity to experience international relations, and the workings of the UN first hand, and gives young New Zealanders the opportunity to develop their negotiation and public speaking skills, and to be educated about global issues.

The United Nations General Assembly is the primary decision making body of the United Nations. It is a unique forum for multilateral discussion of all international issues covered in the UN charter.

GOMUN will be held over two days; Saturday 23rd, and Sunday 24th of March. On the Saturday there will be workshops, and a problem solving exercise in the morning, followed by a plenary session during after lunch. Morning tea, lunch, and afternoon tea will all be provided. On the Saturday night there will be a ball, allowing delegates the opportunity to get to know each other, and have fun in a more relaxed environment. On Sunday, there will be one session in the morning, and the conference will finish at lunch-time, allowing out of town delegates the afternoon to travel home. Only morning tea will be provided on this day.

THE STRUCTURE

WHAT IS GOMUN?

Greater Otago Model United Nations is being held in Queenstown. It will be the first ever Model UN event held in Queenstown, and marks the first time that UN Youth Otago has held a conference outside of Dunedin. The conference venue is the stunning Queenstown Events Centre. On the Saturday evening, the committee plans to hold a ball social at The Rydges. This will give delegates the opportunity to get to know each other in a somewhat less formal environment, and the committee will also be awarding several prizes.

GOMUN will be based around a theme of sustainability; arguably the greatest global issue that faces humanity today. If human consumption stays at current levels, by 2050 three earths would be needed to keep humanity supplied with food and resources. Significant change also needs to be made to combat climate change. If change is not made soon, then massive, permanent climate change will take place. Humanity is currently unsustainable, and change needs to be made.

Typically, the issue of sustainability is one that has been debated before; most memorably at the Copenhagen conference in 2009. The was billed as a complete failure by all except the world’s big economic powers. The Copenhagen Accord was drafted, and a ‘meaningful agreement’ was reached. This agreement was ‘taken note of’, but no action was taken, leaving the world to drift closer to catastrophic climate change with no action.

Our challenge to you as delegates is to create real solutions to the world’s issues surrounding sustainability. There will be two resolutions debated; one anchored around climate change; the other around sustainability. Be the difference.

UN+

The city of Copenhagen is a crime scene tonight, with the guilty men and women fleeing to the airport. There are no targets for

carbon cuts and no agreement on a legally binding treaty. It seems there are too few politicians in this world capable of

looking beyond the horizon of their own narrow self-interest, let alone caring much for the millions of people who are facing down

the threat of climate change.
