One week after a record heatwave, Mother Nature cooperated by cooling down for the Greater Paterson Chamber of Commerce’s 10th Annual Vincent Cortese Memorial Golf Outing.

The outing took place at the Wild Turkey Golf Course of the 3-course Crystal Springs golf resort in Hamburg, NJ for the third consecutive year. The course has been ideal for the GPCC’s players of all levels and talents, featuring fairways that are usually pretty level with only some elevation changes on a couple of holes. Wild Turkey was previously ranked 8th in a state-wide ranking of public courses in New Jersey Monthly magazine.

Upon arrival, golfers were greeted at the bag drop where staff are clad in traditional knickers. After checking in at the GPCC outing table, each golfer was given their starting tee, a bag full of swag donated by several Chamber members, and other gifts such as a new glove and a set of cleats for thier particular shoe brand. Then, a boxed lunch was served in the well-appointed three-level club house, or players could use that time instead to warm up at the golf range with a complimentary bucket of balls.

At 1:00 PM, golfers were lined up for the Texas Scramble tee off. A Texas Scramble is simple and straightforward: Each player hits a tee shot and the best ball (or best of four drives) is determined. All four team members then hit from that spot, and so on. This style of play allows even the weakest driver on the team to get into the action.

The Greater Paterson Chamber of Commerce would like to thank Mayor Jeffery Jones, who served as the Outing’s Celebrity Golfer. Mayor Jones played his fi rst 9 holes with a team of golfers from Greenstar Recycling, the largest residential recycler in Passaic

FREE BUSINESS TRAINING

Dear Chamber Members,

Special events bring communities together. They provide opportunities for neighbors and businesses to get to know one another in a leisurely way. Lately, I have been extremely pleased at the number of special events happening in the City of Paterson, and notably, these events are all hosted and sponsored by various groups, agencies and businesses. These events enrich not just the quality of life in the City of Paterson, but they also encourage economic development.

Recently the City of Paterson brought Jazz back in a meaningful way with a Paterson PM Great Falls Jazz Festival, sponsored by the Paterson Municipal Utilities Authority. The event has so far attracted hundreds of people every Saturday to the Falls. (For more information about the Jazz Festival visit the event website: www.patersonpm.com)

Speaking of the Falls, Celebrate Paterson is once again hosting the Great Falls Festival, a three day Labor Day weekend festival which attracts 70,000 people annually to Paterson. You will ind details about the Falls Festival inside this issue of Chamber Happenings.

Furthermore, the Chamber would be happy to announce community events on our website’s events calendar. If you are planning a special event, feel free to e-mail the details to us at [email protected].

One such theatrical act, is an acrobatic motorcycle thrill show which opens nightly on the McBride Avenue extension bridge.

CELEBRATING PATERSON WITH GREAT FALLS FESTIVAL

ASSEMBLYWOMAN POU DISTRIBUTES BACK TO SCHOOL SACK PACKS TO BOYS AND GIRLS CLUB MEMBERSAssemblywomen Nellie Pou (Paterson, New Jersey) and the Offi ce Depot Foundation are pleased to announce that Paterson Boys and Girls Club: Christopher Hope Site has been chosen to receive colorful new sackpacks containing essential school supplies as part of the Foundation’s 2011 National Backpack Program in partnership with the National Foundation for Women Legislators (NFWL). A formal presentation of the sackpacks was held on Monday, August 15, 2011 at 2:30 p.m. at 60 Temple Street, Paterson, New Jersey.

“This is an extremely meaningful program,” said Asw. Nellie Pou. “I am honored to have the opportunity

to present these sackpacks to deserving students. As we have seen the economy fl uctuate over the last year, many parents have struggled to fi gure out how they will be able to purchase supplies for their children. As another

school year begins, public-private partnerships like this are even more important. As New Jersey’s NFWL Education Team Leader, I must commend the Offi ce Depot Foundation on its efforts to help children succeed by providing basic school supplies, which many of us take for granted.”

“Assemblywoman Pou has a long history of supporting children seeing to it that they get the best possible start each academic year. We

remain grateful to Assemblywoman Pou, the National Foundation for Women Legislators and the Offi ce Depot Foundation for everything

CHAMBER NOW RECRUITING FOR LEADERSHIP PATERSON 2012The First 2012 Leadership Paterson Session is in January ‘12

The cost of enrollment is $950 and the sponsoring employer has to provide 9 full days away from work for the participant to attend the seminars.

Aside from fostering the development of community leaders, the sponsorship of a participant in LP produces residual benefi ts that accrue directly to sponsors: •Those sponsored become more responsible and develop more self-reliance and self-esteem from being in a competitive environment with others who have a wide range of educational accomplishments, jobs, careers and professions. • Those sponsored develop/expand

leadership potential and a willingness to take on greater responsibility and to exercise a leadership role in their jobs and careers. • Those sponsored are afforded networking opportunities to promote their employers. There have been many instances throughout the LP years, when business relationships evolved and where business opportunities were revealed and exploited through the contacts that participants made among other LP participants, as well as those made with others in the 35+ visits that LP made during the year to businesses, organizations, institutions, etc., in conjunction with the 9 LP seminars.

LP enrollment is not limited to sponsored employees. Many business owners as well as top executives of community organizations and institutions have participated and continue to be welcomed.

The GPCC welcomes the return of previous years’ sponsors and of course, sponsorships from those members that have not previously sponsored a participant or themselves.

To enroll a participant or even yourself, or to arrange for more information, or to request a personal visit to your place of business, please call, write, telephone, e-mail or fax:

Sheri A. FerreiraAssociate Director and Director of Leadership Paterson Greater Paterson Chamber of Commerce 100 Hamilton Plaza, Paterson, N.J. 07505, Tel.: 973-881-7300 / Fax: 973-881-8233, E-mail: [email protected]

The Greater Paterson Chamber of Commerce is now recruiting for Leadership Paterson 2012. Leadership Paterson is the largest community outreach program of the GPCC.

GPCC urges Chamber members to give consideration to the sponsorship of an employee or other individual with leadership potential, in the program.

LP is structured to motivate its adult participants, the majority of whom are employees sponsored by GPCC members, to stop complaining about the way things are, or complaining about or criticizing what was done/not done by current leadership, and to get off the sidelines and take on a leadership role in the public/private sectors. In those roles, they will be able to infl uence and initiate new ideas, new ways of doing things, new programs, etc., that will help to make Paterson a better place to live, work, go to school, own a business, shop and in general, to improve the quality of life for those who live and work in the City.

Many of the program’s alumni have been or are involved in community leadership activities. Here are some examples: 4 current members of the 9 member Paterson City Council and 5 former members; 3 former member of the 7 member Passaic County Board of Chosen Freeholders; one former Passaic County Clerk, the current Board Chair of the GPCC and 3 past Chairs; the current President of Passaic County Community College; several members of the Paterson School Board, the former Editorial Page Editor of the Herald News; the Executive Director of the Paterson Education Fund; a member of the Editorial Board of the Herald News and the driving force behind the annual statewide workshop on Latino Empowerment; the President of the N.J. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce; The current President of the Paterson Rotary Club, and 4 former presidents, and many others who serve in volunteer/paid roles as executives, staff members or as board members of community organizations, as well as others in local, county and even state government roles. Wherever there is a need for leadership in the community, there will be an alumnus of LP ready to serve.

Above: Leadership Paterson’s Class of 2006 pays a visit to Lam-Above: Leadership Paterson’s Class of 2006 pays a visit to Lam-bert Castle, the home of Catholina Lambert, one of Paterson’s most notorious silk barons. The excursion was part of “Pater-son’s Glorious History,” LP’s fi rst seminar of every year.

Leadership Paterson offers opportunities for forg-ing strong relationships with classmates. Pictured above at LP’s Annual Alumni networking event is Jamie Dykes, GPCC President, with Sue Greenbaum, President of Greenbaum Interiors (Class of 1989) and Anthony Davis, Paterson’s First Ward Councilman, Anthony Davis, Paterson’s First Ward Councilman, (Class of 2002)(Class of 2002)

Two ‘LP participants (Councilman At-Large Benji Wimberly, and Lisa Alston) observe the activities in-side a 2nd grade public grammar school in Paterson during the Education seminar, which focuses on Paterson’s Public Schools, which are under State control.

Last month we recognized that there are many hidden treasures in Paterson and that there’s a growing number of people who have discovered this. This month I want to highlight some of the support systems that are available.

(This list is not all inclusive.)

On the business side, there is affordable commercial space and real estate for sale. If you compare our pricing to other towns and cities, we are very competitive. Next, let’s talk about fi nancing. Aside from tradtional fi nancing, there is the Paterson Resotoration Corp (http://http://www.patersonuez.com/prc.phpwww.patersonuez.com/prc.php) that offers LOW INTEREST RATE LOANS. Then there is the Urban Enterprise Zone (http://www.patersonuez.comhttp://www.patersonuez.com) which can provide your business with matching grants, reduced taxes for your customers (3.5%) and employee tax credits.

When you need staffi ng, there is a large pool of qualifi ed workers already here and there are organizations that provide trained personnel. For example, there is the Greater Paterson OIC (http://www.gpoic.org), which provides training and qualifi ed personnel. According to Executive Director, Harvey Nutter, one of their specialties is training people to be Microsoft Certifi ed specialists. Microsoft products are used in all types of businesses from offi ces to warehouses. Then there is the Workforce Investment Board (http://wibpc.orghttp://wibpc.org), headed by Charles Featherson. Mr. Featherson says, ‘The Workforce Investment Board plans and coordinates with the One- Stop Career Center (it executes). As

partners, both operate with a focus on investing in people and working to put them back to workput them back to work. They have a trained staff that will help employers get great employees and fi nancial incentives for employers that hire them.

Next, there’s the Small Business Development Center (http://www.wpunj.edu/sbdc), which assists, but is not limited to helping small businesses with fi nancing, marketing, production, organization and business planning.

On the residential side, there is plenty of affordable housing with a mix of properties for sale and rent. There are one families, multi families, condos and co-ops. In addition, there are

a variety of affordable fi nancing programs and grants for fi rst time buyers and step-up buyers.

For fi rst time homebuyers, there is a city grant for down payment and closing costs and state programs such as the ‘Live Where You Work’ program (http://www.state.nj.us/dca/hmfa/consu/buyers/close/live.html). This is a low interest rate mortgage loan for people who buy in the same town where they work. cultures, musical and theatrical acts,” explained Julian-Sotorrio, coordinator of the Festival. “All of these things among the backdrop of the Falls, is the richness of the City of Paterson and this Festival will continue to celebrate Paterson’s richness.”

As the hot summer come to a close, families are able to enjoy one last summer bash, as explained by Jamie Dykes, Chairman of Celebrate Paterson.

“Each year, Celebrate Paterson throws a party for the City of Paterson’s residents and guests. We are pleased to not charge any entrance fees, keeping all the musical and theatrical acts open and free, so each family, no matter what their income situation, can enjoy the festivities.”

One such theatrical act, is an acrobatic motorcycle thrill show which opens nightly on the McBride Avenue extension bridge.

We

County, and which is located in Paterson.Jones played the back 9 holes with a team from Prestige Laundry, a well regarded provider of laundry services in the tri-state area, also with a location in Paterson.

Regarding the value of the outing and networking, Golf Committee Chairman Rick Ricca said, “It was an opportunity not to be missed. When you can have fun and expand business and political contacts, you have a winning combination.”

Jamie Dykes, President of the Greater Paterson Chamber of Commerce always has networking in mind, when planning the event, matching up golfers in need of partners, and the format of the dinner, to ensure not just a good time, but the maximum benefi t to individuals and companies represented.

“This year our weather was absolutely perfect so our members and thier guests were treated to a full day of golf,” said Dykes. “They were able to make new contacts and solidify and strengthen older ones.”

After a 19 holes, players exchanged
