or
Here is to surviving the holidays, spending quality
time with family and friends, and moving toward an awesome New Year! It’s that time of year when we reflect on the accomplishments of the outgoing year, and look forward to beginning the New Year with a fresh start, good intentions, and those pesky ‘resolutions’. Aside from your personal goals in the New Year to perhaps begin a new workout regime, eat healthier, or learn a new skill, I’d like to suggest some ‘professional resolutions’ that we could all apply to our careers and our work within G.R.A.P.E. and other nonprofits.
1. Make Time to Learn - (and I’m not talking about knitting or French cuisine…) Tap into as many resources as you can. Struggling with Excel? Take a seminar. Want to do more to contribute to our organization, you can look into a couple sites with great ideas:
*Nonprofit Hub (http://nonprofithub.com)
*GuideStar (http://guidestar.org )
2. Prioritize Networking - Set attainable goals for network-ing. Invite someone new out to coffee once a month, don’t be afraid to go outside of your comfort zone to find ways to expand and strengthen your
existing network. Then invite them to be a guest at a G.R.A.P.E. event.
3. Set Work Limits for a Healthy ‘Work-Life Balance’ - We all fall prey to this at one point or another in our lives; the prevalence of cell phones, tablets, and laptops make it even more difficult to disconnect from work and volunteer obligations and focus on our own needs. Set some limits for yourself in 2018. Maybe try not to check your email after 8pm on weeknights, or try to stick to a strict ‘no work on Sundays’ approach. Except for G.R.A.P.E. related emails…those should have their own ringtone and should be checked day or night!
Good Luck! Remember, these are goals; if you start slipping back into old habits and not ‘working-out’ these helpful hints don’t give up entirely. There is always another chance to make positive changes tomorrow!

2018! This New Year marks the closing of our 25th Anniversary year and what a year it was?! Before moving forward into our 26th year, I would like to pause and once again thank you, our over 330 Members strong! Each and every one of you have supported G.R.A.P.E. in one way or another. Attending our monthly meetings, sponsoring our special events and serving on the many committees makes us the strongest professional group serving seniors in the greater Rochester region.
To all of you who became ROCstars on ROC THE DAY – THANK YOU!
Your donations added up to approxi-mately $557.00. Donations will be split between Holiday Gifts for Seniors for the 2018 deliveries and The ElderPages Directory.
Speaking of Holiday Gift for Seniors! The committee delivered 88 gifts this year thanks to large donation from Health Direct and from our generous members like you! See page 17 for pictures of our wrapping day and some of the smiling seniors faces!

Karen Menachof first learned about G.R.A.P.E. from an old
friend, Daniel Jones, who had worked with her for years in markeng and then figured out that his real passion was working with seniors. When he heard she was starng Caring Transions, he immediately encouraged her to join G.R.A.P.E. Many members were really generous with their me, offering to meet with her and make introducons along the way to help her get started.
Inially, Karen was involved in the Membership Commiee, but then she joined the Elder Pages commiee. “It’s hard to say “no” to Donna Clare Davern”.
As a newcomer to the Senior Services world, Karen found the G.R.A.P.E. to be quite welcoming, and she has really enjoyed geng to know other providers and building a network of potenal referral partners. She is much more comfortable referring clients to others in the community now that she has had an opportunity to get to know them, both personally and professionally. “Being an acve GRAPE member is a great reminder that we are contribung to a really great cause in our community…not just doing our jobs.”
Over the years, Karen has been very acve with Causewave Community Partners (previously the Adversing Council of Rochester). She is currently on the Execuve Commiee at the Jewish Community Center and sits on two commiees for the Farash Foundaon. As a realtor with Howard Hanna, she is also very involved with the residenal real estate world and focuses her efforts there on the clients served by Caring Transions, to offer a truly comprehensive soluon. Also, “We have also been selected as a provider of
On-Site Training for the Caring Transions franchise, so we have a stake in strengthening the franchise on a naonal scale.”
Clearly, Karen is very involved in the community but she also loves to play the guitar and sing…especially with her daughters who are both fantascally talented. She and her husband Dan enjoy traveling, going out to hear live music, and taking in arts and cultural events. Dan is also acve in their Caring Transions business, though he takes on more of a behind-the-scenes role.
Karen is really proud that she found the courage to step away from a stable work life and start Caring Transions four years ago. “Lots of people thought it was crazy, but we couldn’t be happier that we did it.”
And who would have ever guessed that Karen has done the trapeze, spoken to John Lennon on the phone, and wished she was Bonnie Rai?

The GRAPEvine is the official publication of the Greater Rochester Area
Partnership for the Elderly. It is published by the G.R.A.P.E. Board of
Directors to communicate appropriate G.R.A.P.E. business, decisions and positions, and to keep membership informed
about aging-related issues.
G.R.A.P.E. is an organization of professionals and interested persons who aspire to improve the
quality of services for older people. We accomplish this by sharing expertise, knowledge and skills, and by acting as their advocates in ways deemed
appropriate by the membership. G.R.A.P.E. seeks to foster a sense of camaraderie
among professionals, provide high-quality education and training, influence social and public policies and
facilitate debate about emerging issues, and compile and disseminate an accurate and up-to-date
listing of elder services in the Greater Rochester area.
G.R.A.P.E. members are encouraged to submit ideas, pictures and articles, with subjects relating to elder care. We also solicit calendar events, announcements, and employment opportunities. Pictures should be submitted digitally to the G.R.A.P.E. office. Articles are subject to revision by the GRAPEvine Newsletter Committee.
