The party said it fulfilled 90 percent of its 2009 poll promises. Exuding confidence that Congress- led UPA will form government for the third time in succession, senior party leaders asked people not to believe opinion polls even as they announced a slew of pro-poor measures including homes and affordable healthcare for all in the poll manifesto. Although the manifesto was unfolded by Congress president Sonia Gandhi at the AICC headquarters here, it was left to the party vice-pres- ident Rahul Gandhi to lead the charge. Not only did he face volley of ques- tions from the media-persons along- side his mother but he also ridiculed the BJP’s ongoing high-voltage elec- tion campaign which he said would burst like ‘India Shining’ of 2004. Rahul, along with Congress pres- ident and Prime Minister Dr Manmo- han Singh, cautioned that the BJP Prime Ministerial nominee Naren- dra Modi’s ideology was “against the idea of India and Congress will fight it in a determined manner to ensure that this ideology is defeated.” Dr Singh countered BJP's criti- cism of his 10-year rule. "Today we hear about Gujarat Model, but there is only one model and that is the Congress model of growth with equality," he said. Referring to opinion polls and the BJP campaign Rahul Gandhi said the balloon will burst particu- larly in Uttar Pradesh where 80 seats are at stake. “I also know something about UP and can say with confi- dence that Congress will repeat its performance of 2009,” he observed. Attacking Modi, he said he had nothing against Gujarat Chief Minis- ter as an individual but was opposed to his ideology which is against the idea of India. "Modi represents an ideology which is exclusive," he said. Asked if he agreed with the statement of the Prime Minister about two months back that Modi's coming to power will be "disastrous" for the country, he said, "The PM is a wise man and on most of the issues I bow to him. I tend to agree with his wisdom.” He said, "Narendra Modi represents the ideology of divisive politics. His ideology will hurt India." Besides shelter and health for all, the manifesto also offers a great- er push for infrastructure. The gov- ernment will invest 1 trillion dollars in the next five years, Rahul said. The manifesto pledges to restore growth above 8% in the next 3 years. Pitching for the same Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said, "Growth has many dimensions, I am glad that Con- gress manifesto spells the vision for growth and job creation in great detail." "We lifted 14 crore people out of poverty, our growth record is better than NDA," Dr Singh said. "We ensured that growth reached all sections of society," he added. Meanwhile, Modi's BJP called the Congress manifesto a "docu- ment of deceit.” The party spokesperson Ravi Shankar Prasad said “it is devoid of credibility, bereft of substance and seriously lacks seriousness." After two straight terms in power, the Congress is said to be fighting one of its most difficult elec- tions with opinion polls predicting its defeat to the BJP led by Modi. ‘Small Incident Blown Out Of Proportion’ GK NEWS NETWORK Srinagar, Mar 26: The Kashmiri students of Meewar University have expressed their displeasure over playing up of a minor scuffle between some students in the campus that has left their parents worried in Kashmir. The students called Greater Kashmir office and termed the recent incident of a scuffle as of a small nature. “There was a minor confron- tation between some students at the campus but it was blown out of the proportion,” said Rifat Jan, a student of bachelor of Physio- therapy. “The issue was resolved soon but the media highlighted only the scuffle part.” In a joint statement, the students said that all Kashmiris are safe in the University and there is no need to worry. “We don’t feel any threat as is being projected in the media,” said Seerat Mir, a student of MBA. “We request all outsiders not to spread rumors that create doubts in the minds of our parents.” The students alleged that since the time the incident was reported in the media, their parents have been worried in Kashmir. “Our parents are worried after reading these news reports although the reality is completely different,” said Gowhar Jan, LLB student at the university. “The media focus has increased unwanted pres- sure in the mind of our parents in Kashmir.” According to reports the Meewar Univer- sity has over 550 Kashmiri students on their rolls. On March 21 some Kashmiri students had clashed with some other students and the statement, according to the statement, was amicably resolved. “The issue was blown out of proportion that sent a wave of concern among hundreds of families in Kashmir,” said Muhammed Nadeem Itoo, a bachelor student of Zoology. “We have been here for years and the environ- ment is very friendly.” Kupwara- Darzipora road a ‘dumping ground’ SHAHID RAFIQ Kupwara, Mar 26: Newly- constructed Kupwara-Dar- zipora road has been turned into a dumping site by some locals, causing huge inconve- nience to commuters. Situated on the banks of Haihama Nallah in Kupwara town, the road connects Dar- zipora with district headquar- ters. However in absence of any monitoring, some people dump cow-dung and other garbage on the road. The problem is compound- ed by presence of stray dogs and cattle. “The road has become a safe haven for stray dogs," said Showket Masoodi, a local.
