Annual Report 2013-2014Annual Report 2013-2014

This report demonstrates the dedicated hard work and significant achievements that have taken place in the last 12 months across Greater Manchester.

Can I say from the outset that none of what you will read in this report would have been possible without the amazing support of many partners who have worked with us to deliver our “Changing Lives” strategy across Greater Manchester. I would like to record my personal thanks to each and every one of them.

Two years on from London 2012, and what is widely regarded as the best games ever, we are still creating legacy from that memorable summer. In the past year, Sport Makers, the Olympic Legacy Volunteer Programme came to its natural conclusion, with over 2,000 individuals delivering 25,000 hours volunteering to make sport happen in their community.

My personal highlight has been the Greater Manchester Sainsbury’s School Games, where we hosted both winter and summer games, involving competitors from all 10 boroughs of Greater Manchester, in both able bodied and disability sports. Other successful programmes include Sportivate which has seen another fantastic year with more participants taking part and trying some new sports.

A further highlight of the year had to be the Greater Manchester Sports Awards in November. The individuals in the room on that

evening are truly inspirational with so many of them dedicating large parts of their life to sport. Being able to recognise achievers is an important aspect to GreaterSport’s work. Last year’s event saw us welcome double Olympic Champion, and Britain’s most successful ever swimmer, Rebecca Adlington to the event. The real heroes though, were all the finalists who had achieved so much in their chosen sport.

After 15 memorable years, Richard Saunders this year retired from his position as Chief Executive at GreaterSport. I would like to take this opportunity to thank him for all his work at GreaterSport. He has created a skilled and dedicated team at GreaterSport and well established partnerships both within and outside of Greater Manchester. Richard leaves GreaterSport in a strong position delivering impact and “Changing Lives” for our communities. His legacy will live on for many years to come.

I am also delighted to officially welcome Yvonne Harrison as our new Chief Executive. Yvonne has been with GreaterSport for many years and will continue to build on the successes to help us to get more people more active in Greater Manchester.

Finally, I would like to acknowledge the work that is being done as a whole throughout the county. The impact that you will see throughout this report would not be possible without great relationships and joint working particularly with our Local

Authority partners. I would like to thank all of GreaterSport’s partners, including AGMA and Sport England to name just two, the GreaterSport team and the GreaterSport trustees whose time is given voluntarily on top of what are busy day jobs.

Sport has the opportunity to make a difference to people’s lives and bring communities together across Greater Manchester. I am proud of what has been achieved and it is presented for you in this report to read and enjoy.

Chris Brindley Managing Director, Metro Bank Chair of GreaterSport

The last year has seen many successes, from engaging new people in sport and physical activity, to developing exciting new partnerships, delivering fantastic events and bringing significant investment into Greater Manchester.

Having been part of that journey, I am delighted to now take on the leadership of GreaterSport in my new role as Chief Executive.

As we move forward we have set ourselves an ambitious target to have 1 MILLION people doing regular activity by 2017 and this will be the first year of that journey. In order to achieve this, we will continue to work with the fantastic partners across Greater Manchester and place greater emphasis on insight and understanding our customers. We will look to be innovative and bring different opportunities to local communities to encourage people to get active in a way that’s relevant to them.

It’s hard to believe it’s been two years since the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games and following on from the Rugby League World Cup last year, we have another big summer of

sport with the World Cup and the Commonwealth Games. We are very much looking forward to these as events like this create a real buzz and provide inspiration to many.

It’s an important year for us as we re-apply for funding from Association of Greater Manchester Authorities. This funding provides the foundation upon which we attract other forms of investment into Greater Manchester and the core to run our business and service our district partners.

As you read through this report, you will see we have launched a Workplace offer. Over the next twelve months we will look to engage businesses from across Greater Manchester in supporting their employee’s to be more active, for their personal benefit as well as to support productivity in the workplace.

We will also develop our Under 5’s offer moving into direct delivery with parents and carers of young children to support their early physical development and contribute to giving the children of Greater Manchester the best start in life. Finally with the growing body of evidence to support the case to

reduce inactivity, we will work with a range of partners to help raise the profile and benefit of greater uptake in physical activity and sport by providing strong leadership to drive a co-ordinated approach to this across Greater Manchester.

An exciting year ahead and the team and I look forward to working with you to Change Lives across Greater Manchester.

Yvonne Harrison Chief Executive Officer

Annual Report 2013-2014

Bringing 2012 Legacy to Life – One of the four key commitments of ‘Changing Lives’ is to support parents and carers of children under 5, to help young people develop the vital early movement and dexterity skills that form the bedrock of lifelong activity.

Let’s Play Baby® and Let’s Play Toddler® resources and programmes have developed further, giving parents and carers more ideas and actions they can do as part of their everyday routine to promote physical activity and literacy. We have developed a delivery workforce and voluntary roles within the under 5’s team to support this work.

Lola was one of the attendees at a Let’s Play training session, she found out about the session through her volunteering at stay and play sessions at Harpurhey Children’s Centre, where Let’s Play was discussed as an initiative to encourage parents to do more with their child. Although Lola had little idea what to expect from the programme she felt it would benefit her, not only at home but also in her role as a volunteer.

The training enabled Lola to make changes at home and within her volunteering role.

Changes included:

1 A conscious decision to see how much time her son, Zion, spent in the buggy, she was shocked at this amount and surprised that this had in fact become a habit rather than a necessity. She decided this needed reducing, and by planning her day she could ensure Zion spent more time walking.

2 Prior to the programme Lola had associated physical activity with outside space. During the training she learnt that she could do more exercises inside, even in small areas. She also realised that household objects provided great opportunities for physical activity.

3 Lola felt more confident when volunteering. She had more knowledge and ideas to take into the Children’s Centre to get the children involved and didn’t need to constantly ask what to do anymore.

GREATER MANCHESTER SATELLITE CLUB PROGRAMME

GREATER MANCHESTER SAINSBURY’S SCHOOL GAMES

The Satellite Club programme is a key part of Sport England’s Youth and Community Sport Strategy 2012-17 and aims to undertake transformational change in the way that young people are supported from school, college and other relevant settings into community sport – creating a sporting habit for life.

The vision of the Satellite Club programme is that by March 2017, every secondary school (in addition to colleges and other relevant settings) will be offered the opportunity to host a satellite community sports club with a direct link to one or more National Governing Body of Sport (NGB). The creation of these clubs will support an increase in the number of 11-25 year olds participating regularly (1 x 30 minutes per week) in community sport and reduce the drop-off in sports participation.

In order to create local ownership and capacity in each of our ten Metropolitan Boroughs and thus meet the demands of the

programme; we successfully acquired top-up investment that has created a £60k fund for use across the County. This means the Greater Manchester Satellite Club programme has 10 local leads based in each our boroughs to fully maximise the programme’s impact.

Macauley Beech is a third year student at Stockport College and attends their Futsal Satellite Club. He was not a member of the college football team and did not play football or futsal for a club outside of college. However, through a Sportivate session which linked into a new satellite club he now regularly attends the Futsal Satellite Club. Macauley’s social, tactical and technical skills have developed immensely through the club and he’s now been invited to train with the Stockport Futsal Club first team.

“I have really enjoyed the futsal sessions and because they are based at the college it’s easy for me to get to and a lot of my friends can come along as well.” – Macauley Beech.

IMPACT – CREATING A SPORTING HABIT FOR A LIFETIME FOR YOUNG PEOPLE ACROSS GREATER MANCHESTER

Macauley at his session

The Sainsbury’s School Games is a unique opportunity to motivate and inspire millions of young people across the country to take part in more competitive school sport.

The Games aim to further revive the culture of competitive sport in schools. This exciting concept aims to harness the power of the Olympics and Paralympics and is designed to motivate and enthuse more young people than ever before to participate in high quality, meaningful competition within and across schools, supporting them in achieving their own personal best in sport and in life.

The 2013 Greater Manchester Summer Games saw over 1,600 young athletes from 170 school teams across the county competing against each other in 17 competitions, covering 11 Sports across eight of Manchester’s iconic world class sporting venues.

The event was a huge success with new partnerships formed and further strengthening of current partnerships, including organisations such as Key 103, Manchester City Council and a number of National Governing

Bodies. In true Olympic and Paralympic style, the Summer Games featured an Opening Ceremony, hosted by Key 103, involving a wide variety of music and artistic performances. This included the winners of the school band and dance competitions as well as upcoming boy band ReConnected. Olympic and Commonwealth Gold medallist Darren Campbell MBE and former World Champion and Olympic Bronze Medallist Sarah Stevenson MBE were also on hand to inspire, support and encourage the athletes and officially open the Games.

The fully inclusive event was supported by a 200 strong School Games Crew which was formed to provide young leaders with volunteering opportunities. The crew consisted entirely of young people from schools across Greater Manchester who were deployed in Ambassadorial, Director, Media and NGB sport specific leadership roles. All of whom benefitted from specific training prior to each event.

Due to the success of this event and demand from schools to participate, the number of sports on offer is set to increase for the 2014/15 School Game season.

SPORTIVATE

Sportivate is a £32 million Lottery funded national campaign that has brought £1.8 million into Greater Manchester. It is a key part of Sport England’s London 2012 mass participation legacy plan, “Inspired by 2012”, offering teenagers and young adults, who are not participating regularly in sport, the opportunity to take part in six to eight weeks of high quality coaching sessions and supports them into regular participation within their community.

During 2013/2014, 9,641 hours of Sportivate sessions were delivered across 69 different sports, by 184 organisations who had benefited from funding to deliver these sessions in local communities.

13,667 11 to 25 year olds took part in a Sportivate session in Greater Manchester, with 77% of these completing at least 5 weeks of their chosen Sportivate course.

GreaterSport worked with Badminton England to help role out their new SmashUp initiative for semi sporty 13 to 16 year olds. SmashUp combines music and badminton challenges that provide a new and different badminton experience.

Badminton England also engaged school games organisers, local sports development teams and activators who helped to target and sign up 60 schools to take part in the initiative. The programme was delivered by Badminton England activators who were assigned to a school for 12 weeks to work alongside a member of staff or leader who would continue to run the SmashUp sessions for a further 18 weeks.

The Sportivate offer was a huge help in recruiting such a large number of schools from the Greater Manchester area and as part of the funding an equipment bag was provided to enable the delivery once the Sportivate sessions had finished.

Sportivate has allowed the SmashUp sessions to become extra-curricular clubs with opportunities for young people to help with the running of the sessions beyond the Sportivate programme.

Feedback on the sessions show that SmashUp is engaging with a number of young people who weren’t taking part in any other extra-curricular sporting activities. It is also proving to be popular with teenage girls who are welcoming the new opportunity and have found it a great place to socialise.

Annual Report 2013-2014Annual Report 2013-2014

There are over 1.1 million Greater Manchester residents in work, and GreaterSport are working with businesses to encourage more employees to be more active more often.

The GreaterSport Workplace Challenge was launched in January 2014 as part of the National County Sport Partnership project. Workplaces were urged to sign up for free and encourage employees to win points for their company or organisation by taking part in sport and physical activity and registering that activity online. Employees can do this through taking part in sport and physical activity before, during or after the working day and across all sporting disciplines. Activities like walking to work are even factored into the mix. The most active workplaces and the most active people won prizes, whilst spot prizes were available for anyone who registered activity each week.

GreaterSport also piloted a Workplace Games series in autumn 2013 and in January launched a series of 12 monthly events for 2014. The Greater Manchester Workplace Games offers a fun sport event series for businesses. It provides companies the opportunity for staff to learn a new sport and take part in some friendly competition.

In partnership with the National Governing Bodies of specific sports GreaterSport ran fun introductory tournaments and coaching sessions aimed at getting workplaces active. The first event was in conjunction with BaseballSoftball UK at the home of Manchester Baseball Club in Parrswood. Over 60 participants took part in that first event before numbers grew with the introduction of Volleyball, Dodgeball and Netball. So far, nearly 50 teams have taken part and this is set to grow with Touch Rugby, Lacrosse, Archery, Table Tennis, Basketball and Badminton all planned during 2014.

Rachel Bell from The E Word explains why they decided to take part:

“We got involved in the games to start team building. We thought it would be a good way to get the office together to play sports where there isn’t too much pressure to be amazing at the sport you are playing because it is just a bit of fun.”

“We have really enjoyed being involved in the games, we have made lots of new friends from it and as long as we can get a team every month we will carry on entering!”

GET SKILLED & VOLUNTEER

WORKPLACES

Get Skilled and Volunteer is a National Lottery Funded programme, designed to improve confidence, motivation and life skills of people living in high crime areas by supporting them with training and volunteering opportunities.

To do this we work with local groups who support people who have offended, who have been involved in anti-social behaviour, who are victims of crime or others who live in high crime areas and want to do something to improve their local community. Together we put on sport related qualifications or workshops and then support volunteering experiences within their local communities for all candidates who are ready to use these skills.

The Limes, a Christian charity with roots going back to 1920, who are heavily involved in helping the vulnerable, host the Greater Manchester homeless football league, E.Quality FC. Where a number of homeless men come together to enjoy Football and take a break from reality.

The Limes, wanted to provide these individuals with an opportunity to

train in something they could potentially use to improve career opportunities, by gaining valuable transferable skills and improved self-esteem and confidence, whilst at the same time supporting others in a similar situation by volunteering at the football sessions and gaining work experience.

After consulting the teams who regularly enter the monthly football competition Handball was decided upon as a way to diversify the league from football alone to incorporate a number of different sports.

18 candidates completed their course and thoroughly enjoyed leading the sports sessions and taking part in sessions whilst other candidates lead.

The skills they have learnt have been invaluable in their volunteer experiences and in raising confidence levels. Some of the men are taking part in the Making A Change Abroad programme (MACA) where they will have the opportunity to travel abroad and volunteer leading activities for children in Turkey. The others have volunteered at the E.Quality F.C. monthly tournament.

GreaterSport work with our partners to ensure mass participation events across our county are promoted as a means to inspire the Greater Manchester residents to get active and stay active.

Mike is an Account Director at Chariot Office Supplies. Little did he realise when he started working with GreaterSport 3 years ago that an email from us would have such an impact on his life.

Before receiving the email about running the Greater Manchester Marathon in April 2013, Mike did very little exercise but decided that this was the push he needed to make a difference in his life and start running. He signed up and in April 2013 he completed his first marathon and has not looked back since.

In November 2013 Mike also came 86th out of over 400 runners at the first Greater Manchester Run In The Dark 10km event, which GreaterSport organised on behalf of the Mark Pollock Trust.

“It is so important to me that organisations such as GreaterSport get recognition for the work they do as I am living proof that it does make a huge difference. I have raised over £1,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support so the benefits go much further than just the physical gains.”

In 2014 Mike will be attempting his biggest physical challenge yet, an Ultra Marathon of over 50 miles.

“No tablets, no celebrity diets, no slimming clubs, just some inspirational marketing and events from GreaterSport that landed in front of me at the right time.”

On the right are two photographs of Mike, before his training for the marathon and after.

GreaterSport have been commissioned by the National Trust to deliver a programme of sporting activity in Lyme Park and Dunham Massey from April 2013 to March 2015. The aim of the project is to increase the number of people taking part in regular activity once a week at the National Trust properties, and attract new visitors through the provision of new activity in the outdoors. The target market is new visitors from suburban families from Greater Manchester as well as existing visitors.

The year one focus was to set up new running activities at Lyme Park and deliver family sports taster sessions at Dunham Massey with cycling and orienteering the priority areas. Five run leaders were recruited, 3-2-1 trails were established, three run groups were set up and a new Parkrun started in February 2014 at Lyme Park.

At Dunham Massey summer activities in the park during 2013 attracted over 496 participants over four weeks with over 71% of survey respondents saying they came to the property specifically to take part in the sporting activity on offer. 26% of those surveyed were not members of the National Trust.

Denise started running with the Sunday morning Lyme Park Joggers group in December 2013 at the age of 52 having never run before. Denise saw the Lyme Park Joggers group advertised on the notice board in Poynton and came along. In her first week she ran for 15 minutes without stopping on uneven and undulating terrain. Inspired by her achievement and encouraged by the volunteer run leaders she was hooked!

When the Lyme Park Parkrun started in February, Denise walk-jogged the 5k parkrun route each Saturday morning. She also started going to Lyme Park by herself on a Wednesday morning to do her own challenges as well as continuing the group. Now running three times a week Denise has enjoyed two personal bests over four weeks in the Parkrun and has set herself a goal to complete the Lyme Park Parkrun in under 35 minutes over the coming months.

Denise said ‘running with Lyme Park Joggers is the best thing I’ve ever done, I’m so excited about it! I recommend it to others all the time.’

Annual Report 2013-2014

England Athletics partner with GreaterSport to upskill local coaches with CPD workshops.

England Athletics produced a local coach development programme for winter 2013-14, in Greater Manchester which was focussed on by the M60 athletics network.

England Athletics asked for GreaterSport’s help in tailoring this offer, to identify what additional support or knowledge the coaches would like that would add value to their sessions. This started with a sports coach UK ‘Supporting Coaches Workshop’, to develop a Training Needs Analysis (TNA) with coaches and clubs. From this a number of topics emerged that coaches were interested in getting more information on.

Three workshops were set up, based on the themes identified within the TNA’s; Functional Movement Screening - What Can Be Done in a Club Environment?, Mental Preparation: Harnessing Your Inner Chimp and Creative Coaching - Thinking Outside The Box.

To add value to the workshops, coaches from other sports were invited to attend the workshops

which were advertised through the National Governing Bodies and Coachweb. This allowed the group to gain an insight into how coaches from other sports approach different aspects of coaching. Sarah Friday (England Athletics Club and Coach Support Officer) said “England Athletics have been able to add value to their coaching offer by enabling coaches to network with peers across a range of sports, challenging and inspiring them to look at the wider sporting landscape”.

Sarah Friday also nominated them to attend the GreaterSport Coaching Extra Performance Mentor Programme to add another dimension of support and enrolled them on the England Athletics Local and National Coach Development Programme so they also benefited from additional CPD.

The mentor programme is run by GreaterSport, in partnership with sports coach UK, with this year’s programme running from Feb – June, including workshops covering how the sporting brain works, strength and conditioning, as well as self-reflection for the coaches themselves enabled by video analysis of them working with their athletes.

The Greater Manchester Paralympic Legacy programme was launched in November 2012 by David Weir on behalf of GreaterSport. It has seen GreaterSport invest £50,000 to impact on the lives of disabled people across Greater Manchester.

• Dame Sarah Storey joined the programme as official ambassador.

• 4 clubs were given up to £1,500 each. This money was used in different ways, including hosting open days, starting up new sessions and raising awareness of the club. These clubs were;

– Eastlands Velo Cycling Club

– Rochdale Goalball Club

– Stockport Arnies Weightlifting Club

– Wigan Seahawks Volleyball Club.

• 56 candidates were funded through a Coaching course which enabled them to gain the knowledge and skills required to enhance their coaching skills, making their practice more inclusive. All these individuals volunteered at least 10 hours each within their communities, accounting for 560 coaching hours within Greater Manchester.

• Since this programme launched Sportivate has funded 69 disability focused projects with 1,233 individuals taking part.

• GreaterSport started to connect with more organisations who work with people with a disability to get better understanding of needs and therefore cater the ‘sporting offer’ to a wider audience.

• GreaterSport sponsored the Greater Manchester Disability Games where 360 young disabled athletes took part.

• 5 disabled athletes were funded to enable them to access elite coaching to help reach their potential.

One of the athletes funded was Lauren Cooper from Bolton. Lauren has a congenital condition called cystic hygroma. Although she had spent a lot of her time in the hospital, in May 2012 she decided to take advantage of her improved health and time off from treatment, so her mum booked her three taster ski lessons with Disability SnowSport UK.

It didn’t take long for Lauren to catch the ski bug and the following year she was being told by DSUK staff that she had real potential.

“My next ambition was to take part in a national competition, this is where the grant helped me to fulfil my dream, by funding my elite coaching sessions.”

Lauren competed in the Disability SnowSport’s national Access for all race and the Chill Factore and came second in her category, making her the fastest junior disabled competitor.

When asked about the most positive thing that has been achieved as a result of the grant, Lauren commented, “I now know that cystic hygroma can’t hold me back and best of all, I am really proud of myself!”
