Our success is the result of the high expectations that we hold for teaching and learning.
Student success at Greathouse is directly related to the support provided by parents at home.
This partnership agreement is a cornerstone of the traditional program. I’d like to remind
everyone about some expectations to ensure success in our program…
*Weekly newsletters/websites are sent home/updated each Monday. It is very important to
read this communication so that you know about weekly learning targets, homework,
upcoming events, etc.
*Each student has an individual reading goal each grading period (kindergarten beginning 2nd
semester). Students are expected to spend time reading each night…this time is in addition to
time spent completing homework. Students have time to reading during arrival (8:30-8:50) and
during reading workshop; however, nightly reading at home is required to meet goals and
expectations.
*Math facts should be mastered according to our Greathouse Math Challenge. Students should
study/practice math facts…this time is in addition to time spent completing homework. All GH
students have free access to IXL.com…please utilize this great math resource.
*As students move into the intermediate grades (4th-5th) we work hard to ensure that they
become independent and responsible learners. This includes using an agenda planner (parents
need to sign this each night) and long-range studying and project completion (cannot and
should not be completed on one night). Student will need assistance with pacing so that long-
term assignments/packets do not end up being a large burden on any one night.
Your choice of our program indicates commitment and support of the philosophy and guidelines
of the traditional program. Parents are expected to agree with and actively support school
expectations for good personal and academic practices. We expect our students and families to
make academics a priority by completing homework, meeting reading and math goals, and
staying on top of what is happening in the classroom. Let’s work hard to maintain our success
and remain the #1 scoring elementary school in Kentucky…thank you for your support.
Our wireless clock system has been installed, and each classroom now has a clock that always
shows the correct time. Having the correct time ensures that students arrive at lunch and
special area classes on time which makes for a more efficient instructional day...thank you for
your financial support to make this happen.
Another great building improvement you may have noticed is that our hallways have been
recently painted. The fresh coat of paint made a big difference in that our hallways are now
much brighter. Thank you to the JCPS paint shop crew who worked us in on Monday and
Wednesday evenings over the past several weeks to make this happen!

Well, our PTA Fundraiser is complete. What a great job by the Fundraising
Team to pull off such a big task and bring 100% of the money earned into our
school. I would like to personally thank Lindsay Ford and Heather Chapman
for leading this charge. They were at Greathouse each and every day
collecting pledge sheets, money, keeping track of prizes, classroom totals and
much more. There were so many behind the scenes activities that made
things run so smoothly. This Fundraiser’s success was because of their hard
work and dedication to Greathouse. So thanks Lindsay and Heather! Your
efforts are greatly appreciated and congratulations for a job well done!
Winter is just around the corner and there are more fun and exciting
Greathouse events to look forward to. Some events include Movie Nights,
Literacy Night, and our Talent Show. Be on the lookout for more information
about some of these events to come home soon.
Remember if you are looking for ways to get plugged in, the PTA is always in
need of volunteers. There will be opportunities for the events listed above
along with events in your child’s classroom. If you are interested in
volunteering in any way, please feel free to contact me at any time.
Thanks!

Dear Greathouse Families,
Now that it is time to set our clocks back, it is also a great time to remember the importance
of sleep. Getting enough sleep is one of the most important things your child can do for the
proper development of their mind and body. Students age 5-12 require 10-11 hours of
sleep per night. This can be really challenging with the demands of homework, sports and
other extracurricular activities. However, Sleep is a vital need, essential to a child’s health
and growth. Sleep promotes alertness, memory and performance. Children who get enough
sleep are more likely to function better and are less prone to behavioral problems and
moodiness.
Some helpful tips for establishing bedtime routines are:
Make bedtime the same time every night. Make bedtime a positive and relaxing experience without TV or videos. According to
one recent study, TV viewing prior to bed can lead to difficulty falling and staying asleep. Save your child’s favorite relaxing, non-stimulating activities until last and have them occur in the child’s bedroom.
Keep the bedtime environment (e.g. light, temperature) the same all night long.
Please look at your child’s routine to determine set bedtimes and established times for
school work, play, and relaxation. We strongly encourage removing all electronics (TV,
Video Games, I-Pods, etc.) from your child’s bedroom. This will help prevent late nights or
temptations to wake up in the middle of the night to play.
When your schedule permits, homework should take priority in the afternoon. You can
teach your children great lessons about time management when you teach them that they
must finish their “job” before they have free time. Please set aside a set time Monday –
Thursday devoted to homework and reading time. If possible, you can set a positive
example by sitting down and reading or working quietly at the same time your child works
on homework. If your child is struggling through homework or very resistant during
homework times, please discuss this with your child’s teacher so a plan for success can be
established.
If you have any questions about establishing routines, homework, or schedules, please feel
free to contact me anytime on the main school number or by e mail:
Best wishes,
Margie Odom

Greathouse Talent Show Tryouts On Friday, December 13th, 2013, Greathouse will hold its annual PTA-sponsored Talent Show. Tryouts are scheduled for Monday, November 25th, from 3:45 – 5:30. Students will meet in the Special Area hallway, and try-out in the gymnasium. Students who would like to try out for the talent show, must bring the attached permission slip, a change of dismissal note (each time), and meet the following guidelines: --Limit individual acts to a maximum of 3 minutes. --Perform a “G”rated act. --Singers should perform a capella or to live or recorded instrumental music. Lip syncing or singing over the lyrics of recorded music will not be considered. --Come prepared to try-out with music (CD (cut to 3 minutes max.) or sheet music), instruments, special props, etc. --Attend three practices scheduled for 4:00-5:30pm on Monday, Dec. 2nd, Monday, Dec. 9th, & Wed. 12/11 (dress rehearsal). --Bring a snack to each practice and something to work on while waiting their turn. (Please send students with their own homework supplies.) --Parents are discouraged from attending tryouts and practices, UNLESS 1) they intend to lend a hand and volunteer where needed, or 2) they feel that their child might be unable to control their behavior for the required period of time. --Parents MUST be able to pick up their child promptly at 5:30 pm at the gym door (car rider line) with ID. This year’s talent show will be limited to 2 hours total, including intermission, which will allow for approximately 20 acts. If more than 20 groups/individuals try out, selections will be made to ensure that the talent show is entertaining and that it includes a diversity of acts and students at all grade levels. (Please note, approx. 15 acts had to be cut last year to fit the talent show within the time constraints. Preparedness and originality are key.)
