    East of Mesopotamia, in modern lran, arose a new power in thewortd, Persia. The area had good farmland and was rich insuch as copper, lead, gold, and silver. The Persians joinedother forces to help defeat the Assyrians. About 550 BCE, theyconquests of their own. )

    Their leader was King cyrus, an excellent general. His troopsswift ponies and used snort bows that could be fired quickly. Cyrys led his armyconquei a huge empire that stretched from the lndus River Vall6y all thdwayMesopolamia to Turkey. tt covered about 2,500 miles, and he took all thisin just over 10 Years.

    Helping Cyrus win this vast land was the wise way he treated the. people whoin these-lands. Unlike the Assyrians, who destroyed towns and cities, Cyrussure that his army did nothingto harm the people he conquered. He allowed theto practice their old religions, too! lt was Cyrus who let the Hebrews return toand rebuild their temple'Cyrus dies in S30 BCE, and the king who followed him had to decide how to runvast new emPire.
