Size 1*2.The existence of Titiopolis was only known fromliteraryources fthefourth entury.D. (and ater),untilLongprierRev. Num. 1838,p. 422 ; cp. Ramsay,Hist.Geog.y. 366) published ts earliestcoin a bronzepieceof Hadrian, with the type of Zeus seated. M. Wad-dington{Bev. Num 1883, p. 37 f.) subsequently ub-

lishedanother oinofthecity, withthe headsof Caracallaand Geta and the typeof Dionysosstanding. The coinabove describedtends to fill the gap in the coinagebetweenthe reigns of Hadrian and SeptimiusSeverus.Somedetailsofthe obverse re obscure, butthe egendofthe reverse s quite distinct. The coin must be datedfrom n era beginning in the reign of Commodus, orthreeyearsbefore he commencementfhisreign, houghsuchan era does not seem to be known o us from thersources. The coin of Hadrian mentioned bove is un-dated,butthe coinof Caracalla and Geta bears, ccordingto M. Waddington, helettersCI. No doubt this is adate, but thedate CI (= 210), ifreckonedfrom nyerabeginningn,or ust previous o,thereignofCommodus, wouldofcoursegive an impossible ate forCaracalla andGeta. I can onlysuppose, herefore, hat the lettersCIare incorrectlyead, especially s M. Waddington ddedtohis readingofC I the words lettresdouteuses."
