PARISH COUNCIL MEETING UPDATE

The following items of note resulted from business discussed at the October 8 , 2018 Parish Council meeting:

The roof of the church needed some minor repair recently due to the heavy rains we ex-perienced.

Next year’s Community Picnic will take place after church on September 8th 2019.

The Parish Council has reviewed nominations for 2019 Board Members and continues to accept nominations.

The sound system in the hall was checked and seems to be adequate. A determination was made that the source of the audio is what affects the sound quality most.

The access code for the Doors has been changed and only those individuals approved may use the codes. The side doors in the New Sunday School wing will be locked on Sundays. These along with other safety reminders were discussed in an effort to ensure the safety of all parishioners.

The strategic planning committee continues its work and is currently meeting in order to ensure the future stability of the church.

Rita Georgoulias has offered and the Board approved adding some of the Greek School Pictures from the old Church in the Hallway.

Elections for Parish Council will be held on Sunday, December 9th after services.

To date, the following members of our Church have expressed a desire to serve on the Parish Council. We thank them for their willingness to serve. (listed in alphabetical order)

Συγχαρητηρια!!!

Our Greek School Students did an excellent job on their first performance of the year, OXI Day! It is evident that the kids have been working hard and truly enjoying their ef-forts. As we enter the season of blessings and thanks I would like to thank everyone

who contributed to providing a lavish coffee hour for our community in honor of Oxi Day. I believe that this program is truly a blessing and we are grateful for everyone and their continued support in helping our Greek School be successful. Just a reminder there will be no Greek School classes on November 22nd for Thanksgiving break.

Speech delivered by Rita Georgoulias on the unveiling of the historical case in the Breezeway

“Lord....sanctify those who love the beauty of Your house”

At the heart of every Greek Orthodox Community is its church. It is not only the center of faith, it is also the center of fellowship and its community life. When the first Greek immigrants came to America, their first thoughts were to build a church and to establish a Greek Orthodox Community life for their children. All their endeavors can be seen across America, and Winston-Salem is our example. In 1926 we began on Liberty Street downtown with a make-shift church in a large room up a long flight of stairs. Later we bought the old Brown Memorial Baptist Church building at 700 W. Fourth Street. This became our first "real church." We purchased this in 1943 and we made our home there until we broke ground on Keating Drive in 1969. What a memorable day that was. All the families and children taking turns with the gold shov-el to break ground for this magnificent edifice which we are in today. Mike and I were newlyweds as we took our turn with that shovel (in our choir robes) around this spot where the altar is today. The very next year we entered those doors in September 1970 with our first child. There are many stories you will probably remember about these two events. Please share them with your children and grandchildren . Tell them our history. They need to know and will appre-ciate you for sharing in the years to come. My brother, Jimmy Mathes, remembers that the entire con-gregation marched in that day and sat in the very same pews they had occupied on Fourth Street. TRADITION!! Now, I would like to explain some symbolic features in the CASE LOCATED IN THE BREEZEWAY. The project is a historical one....with pictures, newspaper articles and data. The cen-terpiece is the shovel used at the groundbreaking. The left side is the groundbreaking or THEMELIA. The right side depicts the THERANIXIA or Opening of Doors. There is also an article of the Church's Dedication in 1971 and a copy of the pro-gram of the Golden Anniversary of our parish's founding. This event took place in 1980. There are three crosses in the case: The first is the ultimate cross at the top "Jesus Christ Conquers" The second cross is made by the shovel and the two icons. A House of Worship is built by faith, labor and sacrifice by the people of God....our endeavor to create....to glorify His name on earth with the help of our Lord, the Virgin Mary and all the Saints. The third cross is shaped by the token shovel (groundbreaking) and key (Opening of Doors). The shovel is a symbolic constant struggle to unearth our inner self and find God. The key to Heaven is through prayer, but faith unlocks the door. My only regret is that space would not allow for all the names and events I wanted to include. I need more walls!! Our ancestors and all those who labored for this church have laid the foundation for us. We have stayed together, prayed together and worked together as a community. Let us always keep our faith and our heritage . With God's help, we can and must do this for those who will follow us. It is not the first years of a church which only count, but our future in this troubled world. Our blessings are many. Let us always remember that. To the younger generation of our Parish, this is their church now. They must carry on the Or-thodox Faith and Traditions . The Torch is in their hands. With God's help, they will do it!! Thank you and may God bless and keep us in His everlasting love.

P.S. In 2020,God willing, we will be celebrating 50 years in this church. I hope all of us will be here to celebrate this great occasion.

Hello! What a blessing to have had so many loving hands working together to prepare all the delicious items for our Bake Sale. Please continue to help and bring a friend or two to make it go by quicker. I also want to say how much I appreciated seeing so many of you at our October meeting. We had a lot to cover and yet we still managed to close our meeting before 7. We discussed the preparations for the upcoming Movie Night, introduced the new Welcoming/Visitation and Shut-Ins Committee, the Diakonia Spiritual Retreat coming up in March, the upcoming Bake Sale and announced we will be putting together an Election Committee so that we can scout members for potential Board Members for the 2019-2021 term. If you are interested in being on the Election Committee, or on our Board, please let us know.

With all our preparations for the upcoming Bake Sale, we will not be holding a General Meeting in November. Our next General Meeting & Christmas Social will be on Thursday, December 13th at the home of Leigh Cortesis. More information to follow in Decembers Bulletin. As we approach the holidays, I want to wish you and your families a Happy Thanksgiving! In Christ's Love, Kiki Gonzales

Sunday School News from the Annunciation Sermonette Theme: “Orthodox Traditions”

Our charity food drive continues this month. We ask that you please send in non-perishable food items and leave them by the Sunday school corner. Please help us fill the boxes.

Thank you to those ladies who have been serving as our Maidens for Christ, they contin-ue to do a wonderful job each Sunday.

The Teaching Liturgy that took place on October 21st for all Sunday School students was uplifting. All the students were able to experience the Liturgy and it was an opportunity for our Sunday school students to participate in it and follow along with the hymns of the ser-vice. Father Costa kept everyone engaged in the service. It was great to see all of the participation!

We have a special holiday craft scheduled for November 18th for our Kindergarten through 5th grade.

Also, a reminder that attending the Divine liturgy in another town can be counted for Sun-day School attendance. The necessary form can be found at www.wsgoc.org.

We wish you all a wonderful and safe Thanksgiving season.
