Green Attitude Gala | Introduction
The Anne Fontaine Foundation will kick off its new Green Attitude initiative with the inaugural black-tie Green Attitude Gala on March 21, 2019, the International Day of the Forest.
Under the patronage of French Ambassador to the United States Gérard Araud and presented by Pascal Blondeau, the gala is dedicated to “the voice of women,” and will celebrate the
contributions women have made to environmental and sustainability causes from the Paris Agreement to creating
sustainable alternatives to everyday objects like water bottles and plastic wrap. We will welcome special guests Anne
Fontaine, Vera Wang, and French singer Sheila; at the gala, Ambassador Araud will give a historical speech about the
urgency of fighting climate change, a priority of the French government. The gala will benefit the Anne Fontaine
Foundation’s mission to plant 100,000 trees in the Brazilian Mata Atlântica by 2020.

Green Attitude Gala | AboutTHE FOUNDATION
Founded in 2011, the Anne Fontaine Foundation is a non-profit organization 501(c)(3) that seeks to raise awareness about environmental issues through eco-friendly art and fashion, its primary goal being the reforestation and protection of the Brazilian Atlantic Rainforest, or Mata Atlântica. The foundation works and supports reforestation programs implemented by local NGOs, and since its founding has planted 45,000 trees.
ANNE FONTAINE
Born and raised in Rio de Janeiro, fashion designer Anne Fontaine has always felt deeply connected to nature; at age 18, she left home to live in the Mata Atlântica, settling with the Canela tribe. Though she moved to France at age 20, the sap of the Brazilian forest still runs in her veins. She created the Anne Fontaine Foundation as a way to honor her experiences with nature as part of the United Nations reforestation program.
THE MATA ATLÂNTICA
The Mata Atlântica is a narrow green corridor that stretches from North Brazil to Uruguay. One of the most biodiverse forests in the world, it is also one of the most endangered: only 7% of its original surface remains intact. Beyond the need to protect its scientific significance-- it is home to 8% of the Earth’s plants and 60% of Brazil’s threatened animals-- the Mata Atlântica represents a major social resource, providing water to cities along the coast of Brazil and sustaining many rural communities whose livelihoods are directly linked to the conservation of forest resources.
