GREEN BRICKS
OutlineWhy do we use bricks?About Green bricksAdvantagesSummary
Why do we use bricks?Bricks have been the ideal construction material for 5000 years for creating structures and shelters.
Bricks are preferred than other building construction materials due to
appearance strength heat insulation sound insulation.durability
About clay bricksClay is the main raw material in fired-clay bricks
When bricks are making they are fired up to 2000
F
In this process a large amount of heat is
generated and most of the heat flows to the
surrounding
Therefore the atmospheric temperature increases.
And also to generate such a high
temperature ,lots of fuel should burn.
Clay bricks Contd. The fuel burning process emits green house
gasses such as co2. 1.4 pounds of carbon per brick emits in the clay
brick manufacturing processHence the traditional clay brick manufacturing
system is not eco friendly.
Considering above details we can see the importance of introducing eco friendly bricks.
About green bricks Raw materials
Sand Bacterial solution Calcium chloride Urea
• This process, known as microbial-induced calcite precipitation, or MICP.• Uses the microbes on sand to bind the grains
together like glue with a chain of chemical reactions.
Process of manufacturing green bricks• Fill the formwork with sand and level it. • Shake the bacteria solution and pour it over
the sand and let it saturate. • Pour the urea and yeast solution over the
sand and let it saturate .• After a week remove the formwork
This eco bricks don’t rely on traditional Portland-cement mortar. The same process that allows them to grow also binds them together.
AdvantagesNo heat is involved in the process, just mixingSave energyEco friendlyCan be easily producedProperties are similar to sandstoneDurable
Summary“Green bricks” is a substitute for clay fired ones.If this green bricks replaced every new brick on
earth more than 800 million tons of CO2 could be avoided annually.
This “Green bricks” contributes to create a more sustainable world.
