GREEN BUILDING ALLIANCE 2017 ANNUAL REPORT
2 | GBA 2017 Annual Report
As we enter Green Building Alliance’s 25th year of operation, we are honored to present GBA’s 2017 Annual Report. A quarter of a century in, GBA’s broad network of partners advance sustainable practices at every scale of the built environment, cultivating a culture of sustainability that positively impacts people, planet, places, and markets.
Since our founding in 1993, GBA’s initiatives have evolved, but our underlying approach to change remains constant. With each venture we undertake, we empower, connect, share, and advance innovation in the built environment, ensuring that every building and every community is sustainable. As a result, GBA collaborates with a diverse community of professionals and citizens to create places where all people can thrive.
Thank you for a lifetime of collaboration, but, most importantly, thank you for believing in the power of people to provoke change. It only takes one individual to catalyze transformation.
EVERY BUILDING AND COMMUNITY IS SUSTAINABLE SO EVERY PERSON CAN THRIVEGBA’s 2018-2020 Strategic Plan sets aggressive sustainability goals for every scale of the built environment and sets a course to accelerate the pace of change. Our approach was greatly shaped by the thoughtful contributions of our members, strategic partners, board of directors, and incredible network of stakeholders and community champions.
Mission GBA advances innovation in the built environment by empowering people to create environmentally, economically, and socially vibrant places.
Values Leadership + Innovation: We are committed to transforming the built environment within a generation, using proven solutions and innovative approaches to advance our vision.
Regeneration + Interconnectivity: While the built environment is inherently resource-intensive, we aspire toward sustainability that positively impacts planet, people, places, and markets.
Community + Equity: We collaborate with professionals and residents to create places where all people can thrive.
ONE CHANGE CAN PROVOKE TRANSFORMATION

EMPOWERGBA provides people with the tools to create places that reflect a balanced triple bottom line. In 2017, GBA hosted 97 different events ranging in focus from integrative design to regenerative manufacturing and microgrids. We challenged building professionals to achieve credentials in LEED, Passive House, and the Living Future Challenges, while operations staff mastered ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager and GPRO (the latter for which GBA boasts a 100% pass rate for 40 students). We also toured some of the most innovative sustainable spaces in the city, with behind-the-scenes access to Hazelwood Green, Google Pittsburgh, and Morningside Crossing.
To deepen engagement, GBA also delivered our first “Love Your Space” cohort, a nine-month collaborative learning program to help nonprofits improve their facilities planning and performance. Participants brought current projects to workshop in the cohort and also executed quick impact interventions, including entryway improvements and cloud storage transition, funded by $5,000 in microgrants. GBA staff also provided participants with numerous technical consultations.

advanceGBA drives green building practices by advancing regional policy, technical capacity, and funding models throughout Western Pennsylvania. This year, GBA successfully advocated for the statewide adoption of the 2015 International Building Code, which raises standards of efficiency and health for all buildings. We also helped shape the Pittsburgh Climate Action Plan 3.0 and the Erie Resiliency Plan.
As communities demand healthier futures, GBA assisted a number of (re)developments in applying sustainable practices. Staff provided ongoing technical support to Hazelwood Green and the Uptown EcoInnovation District, while conducting sustainability reviews for the Urban Redevelopment Authority of Pittsburgh. We also completed an Enviro Social Capital implementation report on applying the Pay for Success financing model to regional green stormwater infrastructure, along with disbursing more than $22,000 to school districts for lead and radon testing.

PROGRAM SPOTLIGHT PITTSBURGH 2030 DISTRICT
The Pittsburgh 2030 District is an internationally recognized, locally driven initiative that supports building owners and managers as they strive toward 50% reductions in energy use, water consumption, and transportation emissions by 2030, while improving indoor air quality. The District connects 102 Property Partners with 43 Community and Resource Partners, leading all 19 international 2030 Districts with 81.7 million square feet committed. In 2017, Property Partners reduced energy and water use by 12% and 14.5% respectively, saving a total of $26.7 million dollars. In partnership with the University of Pittsburgh’s Mascaro Center for Sustainable Innovation, the District also launched its first Indoor Air Quality Survey with more than 300 building respondents.

shareGBA gives voice to Western Pennsylvania’s sustainability narrative by sharing case studies, best practices, and fresh analysis. In 2017, we published the second edition of our annual magazine, Viride, while authoring 90 articles for organizational and media outlets. We also delivered 59 newsletters to our community of more than 7,059 subscribers around the world.
GBA’s story is grounded in the achievements of our partners and stakeholders. To raise the profile of regional efforts, we launched Pittsburgh Green Story, an online resource for journalists across the nation. With impartial background guides, story leads, and leadership profiles, the initiative has seeded articles in 41 national publications.

PROGRAM SPOTLIGHT INSPIRE SPEAKERS SERIES
Seven years ago, GBA dreamed of a space where people could think without boundaries. In a region sometimes divided by profession, neighborhood, and tribe, we were missing the richness of critical discourse. In 2017, the Inspire Speakers Series welcomed its 95th speaker to the historic Hill House, and the series has become a physical place where people connect through transformational stories, ideas, and projects. Last year, we welcomed nationally acclaimed thought leaders including Paul Hawken, Karen Washington, Dr. John Francis, and Stephen Ritz, while local practitioners from Grow Pittsburgh, UrbanKind Institute, and The Pittsburgh Foundation discussed efforts to create a healthy and just city.
“The Inspire Speakers Series provides audience members with real-life examples of how grit, perseverance, luck, and imagination are combined to create some of the most amazing outcomes.”
– Dr. Chuck Herring, Teacher South Fayette School District

connectGBA bridges capacity gaps by facilitating cross-sector collaboration within and beyond our diverse stakeholder network. With members from over 140 organizations, GBA forged more than 172 connections essential to elevating projects’ environmental, economic, and equitable impact.
To further expand our collective influence, GBA leveraged a broad range of partnerships. Our strategic alliances with City Energy Project, International Living Future Institute, and Passive House of Western Pennsylvania connected national leaders with local practitioners, while our regional partnerships supported green buildings and sustainable communities across Western Pennsylvania. In 2017, GBA staff also served on over 25 boards and committees throughout the region.

“The Green & Healthy Schools Academy has allowed our team to dream big, and now our students are co-designing our cafeteria to cultivate dignity, wellness, and creativity. Without GBA, we would not have been able to imagine where to start.” - Jennie Canning, Teacher Pittsburgh Brashear High School
GBA’s Green & Healthy Schools Academy (GHSA) engages preK-12 administrators and educators throughout Western Pennsylvania and West Virginia in setting bold visions for their buildings, students, and communities. The Academy applies a holistic approach to sustainability that focuses on organizational values, facilities management, and curricular development to create places where all students can thrive. In 2017, the Academy engaged 143 schools and districts through its School Sustainability Culture Program; Innovative Learning Lab; Healthy Schools Workshops; 1,000 Hours a Year lead and radon program; and project technical assistance. The Culture Program engaged 18 cross-disciplinary teams (comprised of 91 educators and administrators) in monthly immersive workshops, lectures, and hands-on projects, helping them to transform the mindsets and practices of their school communities.
Academy participants were inspired to design an air quality-focused museum exhibit, explore value-driven maker education, launch green cleaning initiatives, conduct lead and radon testing, and integrate health and environmental practices into capital projects.
