GREEN BUILDING

“It is the practice of increasing efficiency with which buildings use resources- energy, water and materials-while reducing building impacts on human health and the environment.”

``Green building technology should reach all''

Conceptwhy …..?

The `Green Building' concept is gaining importance in various countries, including India.

These are buildings that ensure that waste is minimized at every stage during the construction and operation of the building, resulting in low costs, according to experts in the technology.

The techniques associated with the `Green Building' include measures,

To prevent erosion of soil. Rainwater harvesting. Use of solar energy. Preparation of landscapes to reduce heat. Reduction in usage of water. Recycling of waste water and use of world class

energy efficient practices. A similar concept is natural building, which is usually on a

smaller scale and tends to focus on the use of natural materials that are available locally. 6

Page 7: Green Buildings

FUNDAMENTAL PRINCIPLES

• Structure design efficiency

• Energy efficiency

• Water efficiency

• Materials efficiency

• Waste and toxic reduction

Page 8: Green Buildings

• STRUCTURE EFFICIENCY: It is the concept of sustainable building and has

largest impact on cost and performance. It aims to minimize the enviornmment impact

associated with all life-cycles.

• ENERGY EFFICIENCY:The layout of the construction can be strategised

so that natural light pours for additional warmth.Shading the roof with trees offers an eco-friendly

alternative to air conditioning.

Page 9: Green Buildings

• WATER EFFICIENCY:To minimize water consumption one should

aim to use the water which has been collected, used, purified and reused.

Page 10: Green Buildings

• MATERIAL EFFICIENCY:Materials should be use that can be recycled

and can generate surplus amount of energy. An example of this are solar power panels, not

only they provide lightening but they are also a useful energy source.

• WASTE AND REDUCTION:It is probable to reuse resources. What may be waste to us may have another

benefit to something else.

How To Make Green Building?

A green building is a structure that is environmentally responsible and resource-efficient throughout its life-cycle.

OBJECTIVES Expand and complement the

classical building design, concerns of economy, utility, durability and comfort.

INDIAN GREEN BUILDING COUNCIL

• The Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) was formed in the year 2001 by Confederation of Indian Industry (CII).

• The aim of the council is to bring green building movement in India and facilitate India to become one of the global leaders in green buildings by 2015.

LEED Green Building Certification

• LEED stands for…– Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design

• Developed by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) in 2000

• A U.S. green building certification standard also used by numerous projects outside the U.S.– One of the most well known standards

Why Adopt LEED for Your Projects?

• “Green” design has growing market value.• Provides an opportunity for leadership and

legacy.• Public policies are promoting green building -

a national trend.• Provides you with a clear benchmark for

what’s being recognized as “green.” • Documentation requirements lend credibility

to claims to “green” design.

• SUZLON ENERGY LIMITED,PUNE:

Several accolades continue to shower upon Suzlon’s global headquarter in Pune “One Earth”.

LEED certified it as ‘PLATINUM’ and it is built on an area of 10.13acres.

One Earth can be counted as among the largest green building projects in India.

Page 39: Green Buildings

• RAJIV GANDHI INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT-HYDERABAD:

India’s first Greenfield airport is undeniably among the top 10 green buildings in India.

First airport in asia to be certified with ‘SILVER’ rating.

This green building ensures optimal use of natural light and minimal wastage of electricity or energy consumption.

Page 40: Green Buildings

• NOKIA-GURGAON: ‘GOLD’ rated building

by LEED. Its smart lighting, heat

recovery wheel and high efficiency chillers makes this office stand out from the rest.

Suzlon Energy Limited - Pune Suzlon’s global headquarter

in Pune - “One Earth” - ever since the facility has been LEED ‘Platinum’ rated and certified as an eco-friendly building by the Green Building Council.

Built to perfection on an area of 41,000 square meters (10.13 acres), One Earth can be counted as among the largest green building projects in India .

Biodiversity Conservation India Ltd (BCIL) - Bangalore

The company’s TZed homes in Whitefield, Bangalore has been certified as the first residential apartment in the world to be rated ‘Platinum’ under LEED.

TZed, which means “Towards Zero Energy Development” is a 2,49,000 sq.ft. green project spread across 5.5 acres and is designed to reduce lighting and energy by nearly 70 per cent.

No home at BCIL TZed Homes uses incandescent lamps, halogens and fluorescent tubelights

Page 44: Green Buildings

ITC Green Centre - Gurgaon It was the first 'Platinum'

rated building in India. Within a built-in area of 180,000 sq.ft.,

The building features alternative transportation facilities, storm water management system, solar thermal technology, reflective high-albedo roof paint, minimal exterior lighting, separate smoking rooms with exhaust system and zero-water discharge

More than 10% of the building materials are refurbished from other sites and 40% are from within 500 miles of the project site

The Druk White Lotus School - Ladakh• In this desert landscape of

severe climatic conditions, 3,500 meters above sea level, was born a modest school .

• This multi-award winning structure is the recipient of the Best Asian Building, Best Education Building and Best Green Building awards. It combines the best of traditional Ladakhi architecture with 21st century engineering excellence .

Traditional mud brick masonry is used internally to provide increased thermal performance and durability

CONCLUSION:

46

Nowadays, we should make a way to maximize our natural resources and also help our mother earth to get some relief since pollution is everywhere plus the global warming that we are all experiencing. Non-renewable energy is expensive and unsafe but did you know that through green building we can save a lot of energy. Before that, let's define first the meaning of green building (know also as green construction is the practice of creating structures and using processes that are environmentally responsible and resource-efficient throughout a building's life-cycle: from siting to design, construction, operation, maintenance, renovation, and deconstruction. The importance of this is it lessen the consume of energy and the pollution as well because the more we use nonrenewable energy the higher the risk of pollution.

The alternative system that soon followed is the Green Rating for Integrated HabitatAssessment (GRIHA) which has been conceived by the The Energy and Resources Institute(TERI) and jointly developed by Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) as thenational rating system for buildings.

GRIHA

Page 50: Green Buildings

04/18/23 50

This rating system is divided into: sustainable site planning-21.2%, health and well being- 9.6%, building planning and construction-7.7%, energy: end use-36.5%, energy: renewable- 7.7%, recycle, recharge and reuse of water-6.7%, waste management-4.8%, building operation and maintenance-1.9%, and innovation points-3.9%. The GRIHA rates the buildings from 50-60 one star, 61-70 two stars, 71-80 three stars, 81-90 four stars, and above 90 % five stars.
