ATTENTION PARENTS: Is your child struggling to complete his or her assignments? Have they fallen behind on turning
in assignments? Or has your child been absent and having difficulty? If so, students now have
the opportunity to get extra help, extra practice and/or extra time.
Green High School is now offering morning help from 7:00—7:22am Monday through
Thursday in the Art Room. Lunch help is offered during 1st lunch in Mrs. Bentley’s room and
during 2nd lunch in Ms. Colyer’s office. During 6th period students may see any teacher that
they need help from. Finally, they can stay for after-school help Monday through Thursday,
2:15—3:15pm in the Art Room. If transportation home is needed, students may ride the
Elementary Bus with an excuse from the after-school teacher.

Here is a great opportunity
for a unique gift for any
Bobcat fan! The GHS Band is
now taking orders . If anyone
is interested, please contact
Mr. Chaffins, any of the band
members or boosters. There
is a limited supply, so place
your order now and you will
have your gift before
Christmas. Thank you for
your support!
I have noticed the Blog’s I recently written have been loosely tied
together. I have written about the Zulu greeting, assuming
positive intent for the good of the organization, and soliciting and
responding to feedback. I believe all of these topics are grounded
in how we think. So to continue to think about how we think
(metacognition) I want to share a visual with you. The visual
represents the Pygmalion effect.
After seeing this
visual for the first
time I had to ask
myself what are my
b e l i e f s a b o u t
students and are
those beliefs guiding
my actions. One of
my overarching
b e l i e f s a b o u t
students is best
summarized by the following quote by Marva Collins “There is a
brilliant child locked inside of every student.” According to the
above slide if that is a dominant belief of mine than my actions
towards students should correspond with that belief and in turn
the students I interact with beliefs about themselves should
change as well. Hopefully this will result in student actions which
align with my beliefs about them which influenced their beliefs
resulting in positive student outcomes. This is one of the reasons
I like the Power of ICU program. It changes our beliefs about
students. We no longer get all caught up in why they didn’t finish
the work we just worry about getting the work completed. We
use extra time, extra help, and extra practice in order to get that
work completed. I have noticed in a few short weeks that
students actions and behaviors are changing some more quickly
than others but I definitely see a change. As you reflect today
ask yourself what are my beliefs about students.
GREEN HIGH SCHOOL BAND FUNDRAISER

VETERAN’S DAY ASSEMBLY JEFF DIXON & JOE SALYERS, ADVISORS
The Green High School Beta Club, along with the GHS History
Club, recently organized and presented the annual Green High
School Veterans Day Assembly. The assembly,
held on November 11, had in attendance the
Green High School student body and staff,
along with veterans from the community. We
were honored by having local veteran Jared
Timberlake speak to the audience about his
service in the United States Army. Jared also
leads the weekly Bible Club here at GHS and is
married to GHS alumnus Hannah Collett
Timberlake.
Our High School band performed two wonderful renditions of
patriotic songs, including the “Star Spangled Banner.” The
members of the Beta Club led the assembly, along with creating a
GHS Alumni Veterans display in the front lobby and a community
flag collage of Veteran names in the back high school hallway. On
behalf of the Beta and History Clubs, we would like to thank the
staff, student body and community members for giving us the
opportunity to honor our Veterans.
GHS History Club set up a showcase booth at this years student achievement fair at the annual Ohio School Boards Association
convention in Columbus. Over 75 schools participated in the
achievement fair. History club members that represented Green
include Tanner Baldridge, Connor Hamilton, Tyler Thorton,
Randy King, and Katherine Skipworth. Currently, History Club is
working to restore a local cemetery that includes Revolutionary
War and Civil War tombstones.
Pictured in the photos to the right are Randy King, Katherine
Skipworth, Tanner Baldridge, Tyler Thornton and Connor
Hamilton.
GHS MARCHING BAND, MATT CHAFFINS, BAND DIRECTOR
This has been an incredible season for the "Fire of the Furnace"
Marching Band. While we did not qualify for State Marching
Band Finals this year, we should all be proud of what our
students accomplished. Here is a summary of our marching band
season:
Students memorized 8.5 minutes of music and 56 different drill
sets, which are the pictures they make as they march to the
music. They competed in 8 different competitions in West
Virginia and Ohio, including a competition in the Joan C. Edwards
Stadium at Marshall University. Students earned a combined 16
First Place trophies, seven Second Place trophies, two Third
Place trophies and one Grand Champion trophy.
The band consistently earned an Excellent Rating (2 out of 5
where 1 is the highest and the average is 3). The band often
scored higher than bands twice our size and even out scoring
bands in higher classes. (Classes in Ohio Music Educators
Association (OMEA) sanctioned events are based on school
population, not band size.) This is the first year since I became
band director that we have not earned less than an Excellent
Rating at any competition! Our color guard students (Brelan
Baldridge, Marisa Boyd, Kaitlyn Cooper, Aimie Laber and Emily
Skipworth) had an almost perfect season; they earned First Place
at all but two contests.
The marching band also earned 3rd Place Band in the Ashland
Winter Wonderland of Lights Christmas Parade and was
awarded a $100 prize. Our students will also be competing at
the Huntington Christmas Parade of Lights on Saturday,
December 10 at 5:30pm.
Over the next few months, students will be involved in several
musical opportunities. The annual band/choir Christmas Concert
will be held in the Green High School Gym Sunday, December 4
at 2:00pm. Several of the 7th and 8th grade students were
selected for the Marshall University Middle School Honor Band
on December 9. More details will be forthcoming from the MU
Department of Music. Students will also have the opportunity to
audition for the Scioto All-County Band on January 14 and for
the OMEA District 17 All-District Band on January 21.

HISTORY CLUB JEFF DIXON & JOE SALYERS, ADVISORS
The November History Club board shows how Thanksgiving
became a national holiday.

tournament at Raceland on November 15. The Bobcats were led
in scoring by Chris Sparks with a 267/300. The club will compete
again on December 10 at Ashland.

GES STUDENTS ATTEND BEAUTY AND THE
BEAST PRODUCTION
Our entire school traveled down to the Vern Riffe Center of the
Arts on November 18th to see Shawnee's production of “Beauty
and the Beast Jr. We had two students from Green Elementary
who appeared in the production and students were thrilled to
see the familiar faces on the stage. We would like to thank Sun
Coke for providing the financial assistance to cover all student
ticket costs for the performance. We are happy to have them as
partners in education. LITTLE LIBRARY IS A SUCCESS
Our Little Library is being used every single day. We are thrilled
to see students, parents and community members taking
advantage of this unique literature resource. This was a Girl
Scout initiative and a wildly successful one at that. We are lucky
to have such a great Girl Scout troop in our community. Thank
you Girl Scouts.
CAT WALKERS GO TO COLUMBUS
Mr. Tim Sowers and Mrs. Sherry Ratliff brought the Cat Walkers
Club to Columbus to the Capital Conference so they could share
all of the great things they do in Cat Walkers. Our students
wowed and impressed all of the judges and they did a fantastic
job representing our school. The Cat Walkers Club meets
during second lunch where they track their miles walked and
discuss and study healthy nutrition. Way to go Cat Walkers!!!

Green Elementary recognized Red Ribbon Week with a few
special guests. Josh Justice (Portsmouth Police Department) and
Dave Fairchild (Scioto Co. Sheriff’s Department) introduced our
students to Dark, the county drug dog. Students learned about
Dark’s training, how he helps people, and where he lives. The
students also got to explore the law enforcements’ vehicles and
ask questions. Dawn Richards, a nurse with SOMC, joined the
students to discuss healthy choices and taught them breathing
techniques to help with stress and relaxation. Dawn had the
students up and moving and practicing these techniques. Green
Elementary PTO made it possible to finish Red Ribbon Week
with Garry Boothe, the magician that brings a message of positive
character traits through his use of magic and balloons.

FIRST GRADE CELEBRATES THANKSGIVING RHONDA SPROUSE
The week before Thanksgiving first grade students in
Mrs.Knapp's, Mrs. Miller's, and Mrs. Sprouse's classes learned
about the very first Thanksgiving! They learned about the
Pilgrims, Native Americans, the Mayflower, clothing, housing, etc,
from that time period. They had fun dressing up in Pilgrim and
Native American costumes during our little Thanksgiving feast!
First graders also learned about food being produced on farms.
They made their own butter using heavy whipping cream and
salt. They were able to sample their butter on rolls during our
feast! They were amazed that all that liquid could change into
something more solid simply by shake, shake, shaking it in a jar!
Fun times and learning!
