Director’s Note Where Your Money GoesEvery year I am amazed by the array of creativity and talent that comes

together to create this show. It embodies everything I love about the Roar-ing Fork Valley. We care about our environment and one another. We col-laborate and create. We love to be involved and volunteer. This is the stuff myths are made of. This show is much more than a fundraiser. It exemplifies the CCAH mission of building community through art. This year’s story explores our deeper connection to our earth and sky and water. The journey is mystical as we delve into the cycles of birth and rebirth, legends and myths. I want to give a special thanks to Deborah Colley and Laura Stover who follow in the footsteps of many great hard-working Carbondale legends. I know our ideas and intentions are safe in your hands.

Amy KimberlyFashion Show Director

The Carbondale Council on Arts and Humanities is 39 years old and work-ing hard in the Carbondale community. Over 125 people are volunteering countless hours for this production to help raise money for the CCAH educa-

tion programs and year-round arts programming. CCAH provides free after-school art classes for our Carbondale elementary students. We contribute to the middle school drama program, as well as offering piano lessons in Span-

ish, curriculum-based arts programming in our public schools and this year, we are introducing Arts Explosion to the Carbondale Middle School – two days of afternoon creativity during March testing. CCAH also provides scholarships to youth and adults, many op-portunities for local artists and is a hub of community and creativity through-out the year. CCAH events such as the Carbondale Moun-

tain Fair and the Carbondale Summer Concert Series strengthen the vibrancy and economy of our town, while bringing the community together. CCAH is a membership organization and welcomes all who want to get involved. Please find out more at: www.carbon-dalearts.com.

Designer Q&AInterview is between Francis Roces of Kimono Dragons and Melanie Finan, a local designer and co-founder of the Carbondale Sew Op.

About Francis:Francis Roces created Kimono Dragons with a friend in 1999 to offer the public limited-edition, high-end designs made in the Denver area with eco-friendly practices and upcycled textiles. Combining Asian flare, retro sense, and modern twists, Francis designs to com-bine the ready to wear mentality with couture sensibility. Kimono Dragons recently won the Style Wars 2010 at the Denver Art Museum and the Denver Frock Out 2010 at the Denver Public Library.

M: How long have you been designing? What age were you when you first learned to sew?F: I have been sewing since the mid ‘80s and I first learned how to sew in elementary school. It was a stuffed elephant.

M: What’s your greatest challenge in the fashion design/production world?F: My greatest challenge is running KimonoDragons and working a regular job. Time management is the biggest challenge.

M: What is the “green” or “sustainable”

aspect to your work?F: I do enjoy taking clothing that I find and “frankenstein-ing” them into something new. If I create something from scratch, I make sure that I leave very little waste.

M: How or what do you do to get inspired?F: I take inspiration from what is around me, like nature and the seasons.

M: What type of materials are you attracted to? Certain buttons, snaps, grommets, colors/tones?F: I am more attracted to printed fabric of any material, Chinese toggles, and love the color red.

M: Do you use any sort of unique or self-created techniques you’d like to share?F: I use commerical patterns and slice/dice them to fit the image in my head.

About Melanie:Melanie has been making clothes since her youth as a hippie in the jam-band music scene over 10 years ago, and over the past few years has grown and flourished as a clothing artist. A graphic designer and activist by day and fire-dancer and clothing designer by night, she stays very busy. Her clothes are a fusion of wearable art and playful performance-wear

that are oftentimes worn at festive parties or The Playa at Burning Man.

F: Upcycle vs new, what made you choose a side?M: I’ve chosen upcycle because the way I see it, there is so much existing clothing in the world, I had to ask myself, “Why pro-duce more when we can just use what’s already out there?” So I work within my means and since I don’t have access to in-dustrial production of clothes, I just trans-form existing garments.

F: Name a fashion designer that inspires you to create.M: Galareh Designs, Miss Be, and all the designers at A.D. 2013 (Venice, L.A.) are my top three inspirations at the moment.

F: What is your biggest inspiration for this upcoming season?M: My biggest inspiration is ruffles! When in doubt, I usually add a ruffle. But also I’m drawn to the steampunk look.

F: What current trends are you following?M: I’m attracted to the trends in the West Coast/New World movement that are of-tentimes represented as vendors at festi-vals produced by the DoLab and seen at Burning Man.

F: What made you start your clothing line?M: CCAH’s annual fashion show and my muse, Brock Newitt, have been major influ-ences on me. They’ve motivated, inspired, facilitated and filled me with the confi-dence to allow for all my creative expres-sions. Thank you!
