“Have to Answer the Call”
Ambassador Rufus Gifford
“We have to answer the call. We know what we have to do to avoid irreparable harm. We have to cut carbon pollution in our own countries to prevent the worst effects of climate change. We have to adapt to the impacts that, unfortunately, we can no longer avoid. And we have to work together as a global community to tackle this global threat before it is too late.”President Obama, United Nations Headquarters, September 23, 2014

Sustainability as part of 3M’s Vision
“3M is uniquely capable of leading the way as the megatrend of sustainability evolves. It is a platform that can grow our business and is in perfect harmony with our values.”
Inge ThulinChairman, President & CEO
3M Company(Quote from an interview held in March 2012)
How can we advance our customers through sustainable technologies?
How can we enhance homes with green products? How can our innovation in sustainability improve

Sustaining our future, responsibly
Social Responsibility
People are our first priority – within the company and in the communities in which we work.
“Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without
compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs.“
(U.N. World Commission on Environment and Development, 1987)
Economic Success
We do business in an ethical way and in a way that allows us to grow and do more as a company.
Protecting & Preserving the Environment
We develop products with minimal environmental impact throughout their entire life cycles, and we reduce emissions and resource consumption right at the source.
![Page 25: Green partnerships 2014 First session: From Green Visions to Green Business](https://reader035.vdocument.in/reader035/viewer/2022062614/5477db44b4af9f7a0f8b4611/html5/thumbnails/25.jpg)

3M and sustainability
“Our vision, our values and the megatrends impacting the environment and society in general mean that embracing sustainability in all its aspects is not a choice for 3M.
3M is investing in the resources to enable us to both put our own house in order but also to help our customers and society in general to make the right choices for a more sustainable world.
And West Europe is leading the way. The region is the most developed in terms of leadership from government as well as in the choices made by businesses and by the public. So we must reflect that in our business strategies and models, meaning engagement throughout the company “
Inge Thulin, Chairman, President & CEO, 3M Company

The 3P programme
• The 3P programme dates back to 1975 and combines environmental responsibility with economic success:
3P = Pollution Prevention Pays• Preventing sources of pollution instead of
removing them afterwards – saves resources and costs.
• Projects are initiated by employees.
3P accomplishments from 1975 to 2013:> 10,000 3P projects worldwide~ 2 million tons of pollutants were eliminated =
savings of $1.8 billion (first-year savings only)

Smaller footprint, greater power
In collaboration with Intel and SGI, 3M developed a revolutionary two-phase immersion cooling technology which is now being used as a proof-of-concept in a fully functional supercomputer.
This technology using 3M™ Novec™ Engineered Fluids can reduce cooling energy costs by 95 percent and reduces water consumption by eliminating municipal water usage for evaporative cooling.
