Speaker

Jon Skipworth-Button - Project and Construction Management

Title of Paper Overseas Best Practices in Promoting Productivity Synopsis

Discussions on productivity invariably centre on the skills of the workforce, to the exclusion of the many other variables that factor into the realities of the construction process. These factors include procurement methods, repeatability and learning curve, quality and timeliness of information, willingness to accept change, innovation and incentives. This talk explores the effect of these factors on the construction industry in Singapore, with particular reference to other economies, specifically the UK, Australia and Hong Kong.

CV of Speaker Jon Button is a Consultant in Project and Construction Management who was previously an Executive Director at Gammon Pte ltd, leading their Singapore office since 2001 to July 2012. He has a wide range of experience as a contractor in both building and civil engineering and has been resident in HK and Singapore for the last 30 years, prior to which he worked in the Middle East and the UK. Landmark projects that he has been involved in include the Headquarters of the Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank and the Bank of China in HK, the Bukit Panjang LRT, One Raffles Link, Chinatown MRT station, and ITE New College West, in addition to several commercial and industrial design and build projects in Singapore. He believes passionately in improving the general standards of the industry and was instrumental in implementing Gammon’s drive to achieve Zero Harm in Singapore by 2012. Jon has been a Council Member of the Singapore Contractor’s Association where he was Chairman of the Productivity & Technology Committee. He sits on the BCA Construction Productivity Centre Advisory Panel, and is also a member of the Singapore Institute of Directors. He graduated in Civil Engineering from Imperial College, London in 1974 and is a Fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers.

Speaker Thomas Pang

Title of Paper A/C System Energy Efficiency & Permanent M&V provision in Green Mark Standard Synopsis Under the Sustainable Singapore Blueprint, we target to green at least 80% of the buildings in Singapore by 2030. To achieve our target, beside the requirement of new developments to achieve minimum Green Mark standards, BCA must tackle the issue of improving the energy efficiency of our existing buildings. BCA will share on the air conditioning system efficiency requirement as well as the permanent measurement and verification provision in this new legislation for existing buildings. CV of Speaker Thomas Pang has joined BCA Green Mark Department since 2007. His current main work area is green mark developmental works such as development of assessment scheme for existing non-residential buildings and software tool (Design Energy Efficiency). In early 2008, he also involved in the development of the green building evaluation system for the Sino-Singapore Tianjin Eco-city. Another portfolio is the green mark operation such as green mark assessment in Singapore and in the regions. As of now, he has assessed over 100 green mark existing and new developments in Singapore & overseas (residential buildings, office buildings, institutional building, retail malls and industrial buildings). He also involves in new legislation developmental works for existing buildings which is implemented in Jan 2014.

Speaker

Dr. N. Krishnamurthy, Safety and Structures Consultant, Singapore

Title

Safety for Green Construction

Synopsis

Just as safety is essential for productivity, safety is also critical for sustainability of engineering activities, particularly in green construction. It is short-sighted and potentially harmful to separate or worse, ignore, safety in relation to other aspects of sustainability. The presentation will examine the interaction of safety and green construction along three tracks: what known safety measures are important in green construction; what new hazards appear; and the role of the worker in green construction. Measures already successfully implemented in other countries as well as recommendations for consideration elsewhere will be discussed. The vital contribution of the worker to green construction and the critical responsibility of the employer in ensuring worker and workplace safety will be emphasised.

CV of Speaker

Professor Krishnamurthy is currently Consultant in Safety, Structures and Computer Applications in Singapore. He is an Approved Consultant of the Singapore Ministry of Manpower, for whom he also has carried out assignments. He has more than five decades of teaching, research, and consultancy experience, including short courses and talks for practicing engineers, in U.S.A., Singapore, India, and other countries. In U.S.A. he was civil engineering professor at three universities, and Department Chair in the last one. He has also held senior positions in the National University of Singapore (NUS), and Mysore University in India. Presently he teaches at NUS, the University of Newcastle (Australia) at Singapore, and UniSIM, and conducts research for WSH Institute of Singapore. Professor Krishnamurthy has written over ninety papers, and three books including “Introduction to Risk Management”, and contributed to other books and compilations.

Speaker Michael Ainsley ( B.App.Sc, Ph.D) Title “Green” Sustainable protection of steel by Hot-Dip Galvanizing

Synopsis (Hot Dip) Galvanizing is a well-established coating process for the protection of structural steel from corrosion Amongst its many advantages, but possibly the least recognized of all until relatively recent times, is that it can genuinely lay claim to being a “green” coating which further enhances galvanizing’s position as a significant contributor to sustainable steel utilization. This key environmental attribute has been adequately demonstrated by credible scientific work conducted over the past decade and is given prominence in this Paper/Presentation which addresses in broader terms galvanizing’s role in sustainable steel construction.

CV Of Speaker

Michael Ainsley holds a Bachelor of Applied Science degree, majoring in Materials Science, and a Ph.D (Metallurgical Engineering) from the University of Adelaide, Australia. He has worked for 25 years in the global zinc producing industry as a senior consultant responsible for providing expert advice to zinc end-users in Asia and Australia on the technical use and market applications of zinc with a focus on the galvanizing sector. He has served on the Technical Management Committee of the Galvanizing Association of Australia and currently serves as Consultant to the International Zinc Association (IZA) with responsibility for developing a regional Asian awareness of the role and importance of zinc utilization in economic and societal development. A key aspect of this role is to promote a better understanding by engineers, architects and the broader specifying community of the benefits and applications of galvanizing for structural steel corrosion protection. In addition, he provides expert technical advice to the galvanizing industry within Asia enabling improved process efficiencies..
