Deputy Principal’s Message

Studies have shown that the environment beyond school is a rich learning

resource, and the literacies used within it are as valid and as important as the

ones used at school (Ward, Lorrae, 2013, PETAA). Successful students extend

their learning beyond the immediacy of classroom setting. They are continual-

ly interacting with the world around them and drawing inferences from what

they see and hear. The knowledge, attributes and skills that students develop

outside the boundaries of the classroom have the potential to enhance their

learning within school.

With the above focus, GVIC is reviewing the literacy approaches and imple-

menting strategies to improve learning experiences of our lower grades. Now

our Kindergarten and Year One students are exchanging home readers on a

daily basis to develop the love for reading and sharing books daily with par-

ents. Parents are encouraged to support the initiative by regularly sharing the

reading time and following up with the class teacher via student diary for con-

cerns related to exchange of books.

Likewise upper grades are often given projects and creative students excel at

this via exploration of various avenues of information such as contacting ex-

perts on areas being studied, searching local libraries and museums, and so

on. Parents can help to equip their children in advance on topics for the term

since our school website updates parents on topics being studied.

BOSTES provides a few suggestions for parents to support the learning of

their child:

Talk to your child – engage them in conversations to express ideas and

opinions

Create a positive reading environment at home – reading with your

child can help build their vocabulary and creates opportunities to de-

velop knowledge

Provide a variety of texts that your child can read independently or

with you

Engage in storytelling activities with your child

Help your child become familiar with correct word order in written

sentences

Look at punctuation in the books you are reading together

Encourage your child to develop an interest in writing

Work with your child’s teacher

21st century learning skills require students not only to complete homework

as simply extensions of what they do in school but to be challenged with new

experiences. The role of parents has changed from compliance monitors as

they sign reading logs, test spelling words to active participants who collabo-

rate to enable children to reach the peak of learning.

Year One There has been no shortage of fun this term in Year 1. With an excursion to Taronga Zoo, students were able to witness seals making a splash at the seal show with their cheeky tricks. On their trip to the zoo, they also joined the flight show, which had the children looking up at the sky to see the birds swooping over their heads. In CAPA, fa-mous artists were studied and the children were able to be Vincent Van Gogh for a few lessons, exploring his fa-mous artworks and replicating them. Amongst all the fun, they were hard at work, learning about animals, living things, shelters and personal safety. Year 1 is really look-ing forward to continuing to build on their academic skills, moving forward and having fun while they’re at it.

Year Two

In Term 2, Year 2 students have been learning and re-

searching about The Past in The Present. They have

been learning about the traditional custodians of the

Liverpool region. Students are also learning about how

the Indigenous and Torres Strait Islander people lived

on the land, their sacred beliefs, Aboriginal landmarks

in Australia, their culture and amazing artwork.

Year Three

Year 3 students have had an eventful term. They have

completed their NAPLAN exams and have participated in

the Spelling Buzz. Essa Hijazi, of 3R, was named the Year

3 Spelling Buzz Champion. Congratulations to him and all

of the Year 3 finalists. During May, GVIC participated in

“Walk Safely to School” and had a Healthy Breakfast

morning. This term, Year 3 are learning about space in

Science. Students are currently making their creative

models of the planets. On the 2nd of June, students will

extend their knowledge and visit the Space Planetarium

in Wollongong. The Year 3 teachers would like to wish

everyone Ramadan Mubarak. May our fasting and good

deeds be accepted.

Year Four The Year 4s have had a busy but productive

term thus far. Besides covering the normal aca-

demic work, students are extending their learn-

ing by diligently completing their Mathletics ac-

tivities, Class novel, Literacy Pro and Premier’s

Reading Challenge. Students are currently hard

at work on their History research assignment.

We also indulged in a hearty healthy breakfast

on our Walk Safely to School Day and prepared

for the holy month of Ramadan with a special

assembly. Congratulations to all those students

who represented their class in the Spelling Buzz

Competition. Hafsah Ali in 4B was the overall

winner – well done!!

Year Five This term was important to Year 5 students as the

students sat for NAPLAN assessment. The students

enjoyed excursion to Imax related to Antarctica. It

was interesting to see that the students loved to

participate in Spelling Buzz. Misbah Shah from 5G

was the winner. Nearly all Year 5 students partici-

pated in Walk Safely to School, sharing delicious

breakfast in class.

Year Six We are nearly half way through our last year in primary school!

This term Year 6 students have been working very hard. As

part of English and History, students are learning about De-

mocracy, Citizenship Rights, Federation and the different Lev-

els of Government. Students enjoyed researching the history of

the Aboriginals and the struggles they experienced in gaining

basic human rights. Students also observed science experi-

ments conducted to show the difference between a physical

and chemical change. Each week for CAPA, students prepared

for a puppet show which they will be presenting in Week 6. It

was interesting to see how they collaborated as a team to plan

and rehearse a fairy tale puppet show. Well done to all stu-

dents. Walk Safely to School Day was a success event as we all

enjoyed the exercise and of course the healthy breakfast.

Thanks to all students and parents!

Sport

Sporting Competitions

Year 6 students represented our school at the ‘Cops vs Kids Oz Tag’ competition organised by the NSW Police. Our

students played extremely well in all 3 games. The first game was a draw with Prestons Public (1-1), the second game

we lost in the final minute to Hinchinbrook Public (who won the Grand Final) (3-2), and we won our last game against

Heckenberg Public (4-0). Unfortunately we did not make the semi-finals this year but a huge congratulations to our

team for their excellent effort on the day.

Netball Program

Our school was eligible to participate in a netball program. Year 5 students have received training by Netball One am-

bassadors. Some students received FREE tickets to watch the NSW Swifts (58) defeat the QLD Firebirds (54) at Olympic

Park on the 29th May. We would like to thank the sponsors Australia Post, for the program and prizes.

Harmony Day – Capoeira

On Harmony Day last term we had an amazing performance by Capoeira Topazio. Students (Primary & High school)

who are interested to learn Capoeira please visit the groups training session at Miller PCYC on Tuesday nights at

6.30pm.

Why reduce television time?

Studies have shown we use less energy watching TV than sitting still

TV influences the food choice of kids – Australia has a high rate of food advertising during children’s viewing hours

TV replaces time a child can be active and enjoy physical activity

There is an association between excessive TV watching and being overweight

40% of children 5 – 12 years report watching an average of two hours or more of television or videos a day.

Islamic Report

All praise belongs to Allah (swt), peace and salutation upon the Prophet Muhammed S.A.W.

Alhamdulillah, once again with the grace of Allah (swt) we will be witnessing this blessed month of RAMADAN InshaAllah.

It is the month of great blessing where in Allah (swt) rewards us abundantly for any good actions.

This is indeed the month of patience and the reward for true patience is JANNAH (paradise). It is the month of kindness

towards everyone. It is a month where in a true believer’s rizq or provisions is increased.

This is month the first of which brings Allah’s mercy, the middle of which brings his forgiveness and the last of which

brings freedom from the fire of Jahannam.

This Ramadan read as much Quran as you can, make sure your prayers are on time, make dua for yourself and others,

increase in giving charity and have a lot of patience.

A-the moon

It’s been around for

millions of years, but it’s

no more than a month old.

What is it?
