Fly little beans, just fly away August has gone by in a rush! Once again, times flies here in Burundi... Almost unnoticed, the milling activities are now on fire and our coffees are getting prepared to be shipped all over the world. One last effort and soon we will be celebrating the success of the 2019 season!

Have you started packing your stuff yet? The export season has officially begun! After sharing a long journey with us, our coffee beans will soon start leaving Burundi to discover the world that awaits them. Kindly treated and processed in Budeca, our dry mill located in Gitega, the coffee beans still have a long journey ahead. There are many steps they will have to take to reach their final destination: handpicking, weighing, bagging, export docs, loading, touring Burundi and Tanzania, stevedoring in Dar es Salaam, boat trip, unshedding, transport to the customer, unloading... And the journey has only just begun! We wish we could see our clients´ faces when our coffee arrives after travelling halfway around the world!

Make the cash rain again!

May came with the first payment to our farmers. This time, August has arrived with the second and final payment of the 2019 season. No doubt our farmers have worked very hard in order to provide us with the best cherries possible. However, even if the cherry-buying season is over, it´s not vacation time yet: our work with farmers is far from done! Indeed, our CWS managers, who are all agronomists, take advantage of the off-season to run different awareness & good agricultural practices workshops with our farmers. There is always something to do if you want to keep getting better!

From all over the place to Burundi...

Our Aussie friends Mike and Nile from Proud Mary travelled more than 12,000 km to visit us! We had the chance to visit some stations, to enjoy a couple of good cupping sessions, and we also shared some good stories... We were having such a great time that we even invited them to play a badminton game in our house, although we don't know if this amused them so much (spoiler alert: Australia was beaten by Burundi for the first time in history - we couldn't be such good hosts in everything, but don't worry guys: maybe next year?). Thanks to this visit, we can now officially state that we have received visitors from the 5 continents this season!

The 7th edition of Cup of Excellence in Burundi was held this last month. Coffee experts from all over the globe came to the heart of Africa in order to discover (and judge) the incredible flavors our origin has to offer. After a few intense days, Nolan from Proud Mary, Freda from Origin Coffee Roasters, Matt from Hundred House Coffee and Aaron from Skytop decided to take a small break and visit us in our office. Water accessibility, social development, coffee value chain analysis and Burundi's cup profiles were just some of the topics we discussed while enjoying a good (one more) Burundian coffee. For some of them, it was their very first time visiting our country, and that's why we decided to take them to visit the dry mill so that they could see the different processes coffee goes through before leaving Burundi.

Roberto from Kilimanjaro Specialty Coffees completed this last round of visits. This Chilean based in Spain began to take an interest in coffee while living in Australia and New Zealand. After years in the industry, he decided to start his own business in Barcelona. His passion for African coffees has allowed him to visit most of the coffee-producing countries in the continent, and Burundi has not been an exception. These first-hand experiences have led him to acquire a wide understanding of the local and direct impact that coffee has on farmers´ daily lives, and the potential that goes with it. After his visit, Roberto has decided to include Burundi for the first time in his broad African coffee menu! We are very happy to announce that our coffee will now be even more spread out through Europe thanks to Kilimanjaro´s offices in Barcelona and Budapest. Greenco's expansion is on its way!

And from Burundi to the world! Our last samples for 2019 crop are still available! Just drop us an email if you're interested in receiving some before it's too late!

I want samples!

Carlos' Words

Coffee milling is in full swing so we will soon be able to say that the 2019 season is coming to an end. Thanks to a collaborative and hard-working mindset we have been able to overcome all the difficulties we have encountered along the way. I couldn't be happier of all the work we have done so far and, with one last effort, we will make this year a success once again! This last month has been a whirlwind in the most beautiful way. There's so much to be grateful for. Listing a few things that come to the top of my mind as I type: I'm grateful for the trust placed in us by our clients, for the visits received from old and new friends who came from so far away, for the hard work of all the dry mill staff to have our coffees ready on time, for the dedication of all the Greenco team at the stations to train our farmers and give them hope through coffee... Nelson Mandela said that "education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world". We could not agree more, and we also take the opportunity to give thanks for everything we learn daily from our colleagues, our clients, our farmers... A day without learning is a day without living! Next month, we'll be back with more news, more impact projects and, of course, with more coffee! Stay tuned, something big is coming!
