Greener
With temperatures very obviously rising, even in
temperate Britain, and biodiversity loss clear to all of
us in the lack of flies and insects, what can we do,
both individually and as a community?
Here is our directory of Waldringfield’s existing
services and events, with small tips throughout on how
we can become Greener Together
Greener Waldringfield is an informal group of
villagers who share an interest in the environment

Useful contacts
Defibrillator There is a Community Public Accessible Defibrillator (CPAD) or Automated External Defibrillator (AED) on the rear wall of The Maybush. If someone collapses, dial 999 and the ambulance service will give you the key code to the yellow cabinet. Voice prompts will talk you through how to use the defibrillator

Green Thoughts:
Climate change is natural and cyclical
Climate breakdown is not and can be – maybe - a bit mended
Biodiversity loss is something that happens
Biodiversity destruction is what we do, and can stop or reverse
The Environment just means ‘surroundings’
The biosphere is all living things and the mediums they need to survive
Annual Events PRODUCE, FLOWER AND CRAFT SHOW
August. Classes for home-grown fruit and veg, brewing, baking, crafts, art and photos. Tea and cake, auction of produce. Contact Alexis Smith 736257 Green Tip: Bulk cook - it saves time and money too. Share meals.
Many villagers sell cheap, home grown, often organic, veg at the bottom
of their drives
INTERNATIONAL CAR FREE Day Sep 22nd 2019
HARVEST SUPPER
October. Pantomime, food, merriment!
AUCTION OF PROMISES IN AID OF ALL SAINTS CHURCH
Every other year, usually November. Contact Rolls Barclay PUMPKIN PARTY
November. Pumpkin competitions, veg boats to sail along the river, lantern
parade… Organised by Waldringfield Gardeners. Contact Betsy Reid 736506
CHRISTMAS FLORAL WORKSHOP
Held in the Village Hall in November Organised by Waldringfield Gardeners. Contact Alexis Smith 736257
Green Tip: Enjoy the verges and learn what the native plants - aka ‘weeds’ - growing
there feed. Towns and villages provide a haven and refuge for insects and the food
chain, that is lacking in the monocultural agricultural environment
NATIONAL TREE WEEK Nov/Dec
Green Tip: Plant a tree - it will still be providing food and shelter, absorbing carbon,
cleaning air and circulating nutrients and water long after even the richest legacy
you can provide with money
CHRISTMAS CRACKER WORKSHOP
Held in the Village Hall in November. Contact Jane Spall 736751
WINTER QUIZ
November. Teams of six; includes fish and chip supper
Contact Tim Elliot 736736 [email protected]
Annual Events
WINTER PARTY
Varied entertainment. Fun and food guaranteed. Usually Jan or Feb
Green Tip: Keep thinking of ways you can increase your insulation or practices
you can make to save energy use: closing curtains at nightfall, for instance
BIG GARDEN BIRD WATCH Last week of Jan
Green Tip: dogs frighten wild-life and reduce nesting initiatives for ground nesting
birds. Keep them on a lead in Church Field and along the river wall
If you’re refurbishing your home, consider installing bat and swift boxes
EARTH HOUR March
Green Tip: keep outside light levels to a minimum. All creatures, including us, have
a diurnal rhythm and need their alternate light and dark phases
OPEN GARDENS
May. Villagers’ gardens open to the public, and cream teas at the Village Hall
Organised by Waldringfield Gardeners. Contact Alexis Smith 736257
SCARECROW COMPETITION
May. Coincides with Open Gardens
INTERNATIONAL COMPOST AWARENESS WEEK May
Green Tip: don’t let allium triquetrum or Alexanders escape into the wild. Dig them
up when you see them. If they’re in flower they will set seed, so rot them in a bucket
of water, before composting
WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY June 5th 2019 Green Tip: we all want clean air and swimmable rivers and seas. Yet 97% of the
planet’s people are breathing contaminated air. All energy generation causes some
air pollution, so reducing energy use will help. Already, energy efficiency has
contributed more to reduced energy use than green energy generation (impressive
as that is). Conscious economy – turning off all the little red stand-by lights, for
instance – could do even more

Community Composting
Contact: Linda Wilkins 736044 [email protected]
Green Tip: Mulch, mulch, mulch. Don’t bother taking leaves and twigs to a compost
heap – just chop and drop. Soil likes to be covered, and whatever covers it in due
course becomes food
Waldringfield Gardeners
A group for everyone who grows for pleasure or production to share their enthusiasm
and expertise. Pruning workshops, seed swaps and annual events. £5 membership fee

Green Tips: Roundup (active ingredient: glyphosate) on your plants goes into their
roots and is toxic to earth worms
Harvest winter rain for the summer by using the biggest butts you can get. Avoid
run off into the road – it takes poisons from the road surface into the river and erodes
the verges

Wildlife Group
Waldringfield Wildlife Group exists to conserve, enhance and record the local wildlife;
to protect wildlife habitats and encourage biodiversity; to encourage wildlife-friendly
management of land, gardens and public spaces and to encourage a greater interest in
the knowledge and love of wildlife in general. Contact Linda Wilkins 736044

Church Field Trust Open space for football, kite flying, playing. Picnic table. Varied wildlife habitats Contact Christine Fisher-Kay [email protected] Tel: 736384
Green Tip: Soil Matters. Mess with it less and don’t dig. Digging destroys all the
little channels made by worms and decaying roots that water and air percolate into;
it exposes the soil biota to heat and drought; and it disturbs the gas balance in the
soil, introducing added oxygen decay and thus speeding up the release of carbon
dioxide

Golf Club "Pay and Play" course - £10 for 9 holes. 736417 or [email protected] waldringfieldgolfandleisure.co.uk
Green Tip: most plastics are not going to landfill or incineration but continue to be
exported, almost certainly to countries where there are no facilities for dealing with
them properly. They just escape into the wider environment: out of sight and mind
for us - but we are all disturbed by plastic in our oceans. Pick up on your walks
Tennis
There is a Tennis Court Society which families may join for an annual fee, or you may
hire the court by the hour, also for a fee

Quiet Lanes Suffolk
Under the Transport Act 2000, all local authorities can designate roads as Quiet
Lanes, which give people a chance to walk, cycle and ride in a quiet environment;
widen transport chances; and protect the character and tranquillity of country lanes.
Woodbridge Road and Mill Road in Waldringfield are part of the scheme.

Green Tip: Lift share as much as possible. Walk or cycle for all journeys less than
two miles – then you never need to pay for gym membership
Traffic generates lots of grubby air – not only exhaust fumes, but also tyre
abrasion which generates particulate dust. So as well as sharing lifts, use the bus,
walk or cycle
BUSES suffolkonboard.com
from Waldringfield Primary School and adj. Mill Road
Please check times at bus stop or online before travelling Green Tip: Use the bus to stimulate better
services. Also, bus use brings us into contact
with all sections of society, thus reducing
suspicion and othering
Parish Council Meetings are held at 7.30pm in the Village Hall, usually on the second Tuesday of the
month. [email protected]

Let’s talk about an energy co-op in the village. Would you be interested in a group buy
of solar panels or windmills? There can be no better way of safeguarding your grand-
children’s future than helping towards a localised energy network - less susceptible to
terrorist attack, and fewer losses in transmission

Education
Waldringfield Primary School
Waldringfield Primary School was founded in 1874. The original school
building is now the school hall with many additions over the years.
Today, our school motto "We care, we share, we learn together"
summarises the school aims. We believe that all children should have
the opportunity to succeed and that success often happens when it is
shared within a caring, family environment

Save the planet - plant a tree The number of oaks that used to occupy the village skyline is much depleted and those left are increasingly severely pruned. If you have a forest giant in your garden, please bear with the immediate shade: you and your tree are providing an important public service Planting trees is one of the best ways to mitigate climate breakdown. Not only do they store carbon, but they provide perches and nests for birds, and homes for all kinds of wildlife Every tree we plant in Waldringfield will outlive us all, and provide a beautiful, green legacy for the future There are trees for every size garden or patio If you’d like some tips on what kind of tree you could grow, contact Christine Fisher-Kay, Tree Warden [email protected]
