Spread across 687 acres of greens, and with an annual production turnover of 1100 MT worth of organic produce India’s largest integrated organic farm-the Hathikuli tea estate is situated in the periphery of the Kaziranga National Park. To help protect this fragile ecosystem and all the creatures big and small, we made our tea estate fully organic by 2011. So instead of chemical fertilizers we use vermi-compost and instead of dangerous pesticides we let nature create its own predators of pests.

Hathikuli, which means “frequented by elephants” in Assamese, ensures that the tea we produce is as safe and pure for the consumer as it is for all the organisms that thrive there, from the micro-organisms to the elephants.

Fully organicThe Hathikuli tea estate

Organic tea and pepper that is produced at Hathikuli is free from any chemicals, fertilisers, pesticides, toxic substances, synthetic hormones and is certified according to international standards for organic production and processing. The all-natural farming practices have encouraged newer species of birds, animals and insects to thrive in the region.

Hathikuli is thus a testament to the commitment of the management towards safeguarding the rich bio-diversity of the region and a clarion call for other plantations in the area to adopt similar measures.

Kaziranga is recognized as an Important Bird Area by Birdlife International for conservation of avifaunal species. Compared to other protected areas in India, Kaziranga has achieved notable success in wildlife conservation. Located on the edge of the eastern himalaya biodiversity hotspot, the park combines high species diversity and visibility. The park celebrated its centennial in 2005 after its establishment in 1905 as a reserve forest.

A crucial part of our existence is our obsessive belief and adherence to setting and following quality standards. Not just in the growing, plucking, processing and the packing of our products, but beyond that, in the way we respect people and the environment. We ensure that all quality parameters are met and have the certifications to show for it.

ISO 22000:2005 : This defines food safety management system requirements for companies that need to meet and exceed global food safety regulations. 15 of our gardens are certified.

SA 8000 : This is based on the principles of international human rights norms and described in international labour organization conventions, the United Nations convention on the rights of the child and the universal declaration of human rights. All our estates are SA 8000 certified.

ETHICAL TEA PARTNERSHIP : The Ethical Tea Partnership (ETP) is an international, non-competitive alliance of tea packers who are working together to improve the sustainability in the tea sector. ETP’s aim is to improve the lives of tea workers and to ensure that tea drinkers can be confident that their tea has been produced in a socially and environmentally sustainable way. All our Assam estates are ETP compliant.

OHS Auditing : Apart from the above APPL has successfully implemented the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) programme across the company.

Trustea : The trustea code is designed to evaluate the social, economic, agronomic and environmental performance of Indian tea estates, small holders and Bought Leaf Factories (BLFs). APPL is working with the Tea Board of India in taking the Indian standard of sustainability to international levels.

Rainforest Alliance: This certification recognizes a company’s efforts towards bio-diversity protection, conservation of natural resources, helping reduce climate change and offering economic opportunities to populations in need. Hathikuli and Nowera Nuddy have applied for Rainforest Alliance Certification.

A pioneering development by APPL, is leveraging the core assets of the North East with the aim to have economic, social and environmental impact. We are committed to embark on and implement sustainable agriculture projects by optimizing efficiencies of the key assets- Land, Water and People, while maintaining and enhancing the frail ecological balance of the region. The projects and implementation plans will encapsulate opportunities both within and outside the company’s tea estates.

Our initiatives in food and nutrition security will initially focus on indigenous spices, fruits, vegetables and animal husbandry through dairy and fresh water fishery. Experimental and demonstration centres have already been implemented within the tea estates to fine-tune the operating procedures across the value chain from farm input to farm output deliveries. In fact, APPL has already implemented the largest consolidated fresh water fishery project in Assam.

Sustaining livelihoodBio-diversity security is important in ensuring environmental sustainability. This is the reason why APPL has made a conscious effort of stepping into plantation management of high value commercial plantation crops of eleven indigenous and traditional tree varieties including teak, bamboo, as well as medicinal and aromatic plants.

APPL is committed to preserving the traditional ecological knowledge of the local communities to maintain the environmental integrity of the region. We are also focussed on enhancing capacities, productivities and efficacies through the infusion of technology and ICT platforms, especially in the areas of post-harvest management and aggregation, value additions and processing.

APPL is also establishing domestic and international market linkages and cold-chain logistics. It is facilitating the processes for organic certification and exploration and implementation of carbon trading opportunities.

APPL is proud to partner “Operation Smile” at RHRC. Operation Smile has a focused mission of a cleft-free India. And APPL has taken upon itself the task of making itself a cleft-free company. Lab to land programmeThis programme was started by Tata Tea in 1990, with technical assistance from the Assam Agriculture University, to help the farmers adjacent to the tea estate. High yielding cash crops and winter vegetables as well as poultry are given to them so that the sale of these can help them supplement their income.

Aqua cultureAPPL is the largest organised player of fishery in the North-East, producing the best quality fish seeds. These are supplied to the local fishing communities to ensure higher yields for generating sustainable incomes.

Social forestryAPPL has a large inventory of trees comprising more than ten indigenous varieties. A programme for planting 20000 trees per annum across all its gardens has been implemented.

Organic growthAPPL believes that organic methods of farming results in a far more inclusive and enriched lifestyle. Apart from our hugely successful experiment in Hathikuli, we intend to highlight and focus on organic projects that help preserve the delicate ecological balance in the North-Eastern Frontier region.

Brand newCommodity to brandsIn order to be more customer-centric and offer some of its produce directly to the end-consumer, APPL has decided to market them under an umbrella brand - Anshi

Anshi, which means “God’s gift” in Sanskrit, would encapsulate and connote everything that APPL’s produce would offer. It’s place of origin and the resultant goodness in health and taste that only natural foods can promise.

From the land divinely blessed with nature’s bounty. Where the sun, earth, and water come together in perfect harmony, to produce the purest food on Earth.

Retailing initiativesWhile a large range of products will be available under the Anshi banner in the future, tea and pepper would be launched shortly. These will be available as 100% organic or pure natural produce.

The retailing of these products would also be done in a way so as to emphasise its uniqueness and product quality.

Stand-alone kiosks with strong branding would soon be seen across major cities. Anshi would also be available in high-end and speciality stores.
