Redemption Comes in the

Blink of an Eye

One of my congregants stopped by the

shul to chat. As he walked into my

office, he handed me a bottle of whiskey and told me he

brought it for this week’s kiddush. Judging by the IRS

“Tax Paid” bottle stamp sealed over the screw cap of the

whiskey, I could tell this was an oldie (but not necessari-

ly a goodie). No matter. Our L’chayim club will make

short work of it. They take their job of disposing of

chametz very seriously.

As we sat down to speak I said, “We’ll have to have a

L’chayim this Shabbos when we open your bottle.” He

said, “well actually rabbi, I haven’t had a drink since I

was a young man. It may have had to do with the fact

that I got really sick from drinking when I was 21, but the

real reason is this- I believe the Messiah could come at

any moment and if he or she were to come, I would want

to have all my faculties about me.” What was I supposed

to say to that? “That sounds reasonable”, I said.

But do you know what? He’s absolutely right! The phi-

losopher Maimonides, taught that one of the 13 founda-

tional beliefs of Judaism is: “I believe with complete

faith in the coming of the Messiah, and even though he

may delay, in spite of that, I will still wait expectantly

each day for him to come.” A corresponding idea is the

rabbinic saying; “Yeshuas Hashem K’heref Ayin- God’s

salvation comes in the blink of an eye” (Midrash on

Message from Rabbi Joel Dinin “Let all who are hungry come and eat.”

This line from the Haggadah invites eve-

ryone to join in the seder, from family to

friends and everyone in between. We also

invite spiritual beings such as Eliyahu the Prophet and

symbolic guests meant to teach us about ourselves and

our history. Among these guests “attending” the seder are

the four sons: wicked, wise, simple, and one who does

not know how to ask. Each child is given a different

response, reflecting four ways of describing our exodus

from Egypt written in the Torah.

Each child has something in common; they all have a

place at the seder table and their individual characteris-

tics are reflected in each of us. I’ve been the wise child,

overconfident, eager to impress. I’ve been the wicked

child, more interested in proving someone wrong than

learning from a different perspective. I’ve been the sim-

ple child, admitting my lack of knowledge and ignorance.

I’ve also walked into a space and felt so out of place that

I didn’t even know what to ask, hoping no one would

notice me in my silence.

Each of us comes to the seder as a different child. Some

happy, some angry, some lost, some overconfident, some

inspired, some longing for tradition, some longing for

brisket. The message found in the four sons, and the

whole of the Haggadah, is that everyone has a place at

the seder, everyone deserves an answer appropriate for

them; even the wicked child is given an answer.

Megillas Esther). Never give up hope. Rather, arouse in your-

self the daily belief that at any moment, something great could

happen to you. The solution to a taxing problem may present

itself. Today may be the day you go sober from your addiction

or you fix a broken relationship. Today could be the day you

are healed from the illness you are fighting. It is a mitzvah to

never stop believing in the light at the end of the tunnel. Per-

haps today is the day we will reach it. The Hebrew word which

names this core Jewish value is “Geulah” or “Redemption”, and

it is the spiritual engine that drives Passover- the holiday of

redemption from slavery in Egypt.

We live in a world where unfortunately, we’ve seen over and

over how in a moment, life can go from being normal and taken

for granted to a time of illness, violence, or loss. Though it may

be bleak, this reality is important to remember. Every day must

be treasured because we don’t know when everything could

change. Do not take life for granted. This is a central theme of

the High Holidays. Igniting our desire to improve based on the

knowledge that only God knows “who may live and who may

die, who will live a full life and whose life will be cut

short” (Unesana Tokef).

Passover, which comes on the other side of the year, carries

the exact opposite message. Rather than motivation based on

fear of death and awe of God’s power, we are motivated by

excitement for what’s to come and love for the beautiful prom-

ise of life and all the open possibilities ahead. This message is

perfect for springtime when all the good weather (and for our

ancestors, the harvest cycle) awaits.

A closer look at the texts and customs surrounding Pesach

will illustrate this point as well. The eating of green vegetables

and eggs at the seder represent the life-force growing around us.

The recitation of “Song of Songs” on Passover is a nod to the

passionate love for God and life we should be feeling. Perhaps

the most obvious symbol and reminder that “redemption can

come in the blink of an eye” is everyone’s favorite Pesach food-

matzah.

We eat matzah because when our ancestors were redeemed

from Egypt, they were freed with such immediacy that there

was “no time for their dough to rise. When it was time to leave,

there was no delay” (Exodus 12:39). The word for “no delay”

is one that rarely appears in scripture- “Lehit-ma-may-ah”. It

happens to be the exact word Maimonides chooses to tell us to

await the Messiah “though he may delay”. His subtle message

is clear, when the time for breakthrough arrives, there will be no

delay and perhaps today is that day.

So as my favorite holiday approaches, I pray we all merit

geulah. May the redemption be for us, our families, our com-

munity, for Israel, and for the entire world. Don’t ever lose

hope; boundless freedom can come today just as it did one

spring morning in Egypt for our ancestors.

From Rabbi Joel Dinin Continued from front cover

There is a unique and meaningful way that our Torah

can be presented to each person. In education this is called

differentiated instruction. Some students learn through

pictures, some through reading, some through movement,

and some through song. It’s no accident that our Haggadot

throughout the generations have been one of the greatest

sources of Jewish art, commentary, and even symbolic

activities with food that engage all of our senses. The

Rabbis knew that the Haggadah was an essential tool

with the potential to reach a diversity of Jews in every

generation.

The Pesach seder is a classroom for the four sons in all

of us, using every tool, every medium, every pathway to

reach us, bring us in and tie us to our history, our family

and our God, each in his or her own way.

During these past two and a half years I have been

blessed to be part of one community that supported me

and my family in the way we needed. We were mentored,

we were cared for, we were forgiven, and encouraged.

Next year we begin a new seder, in a new city, with new

opportunities, new people who bring something else to the

table, and that’s the key! Wherever I go, whatever kind of

leader I become, the greatest lesson I have learned from

my experiences as a rabbi and from the Haggadah is that

every person has a voice at the seder, and every person

deserves their own unique answer.

On behalf of myself, Sarah, Meira and Michael, we wish everyone Chag Kasher v’Sameakh!

MATZAH NEEDED If you have extra matzah, and want to

donate some to MMAE for our seder, we would be very grateful. Deadline to drop off

matzah will be Thursday, March 29th.

Messages from our Officers

From Bob Meyerson, Chairman

Celebrating and rejoicing in the age old tradition of

Passover is our favorite time of the year. Even with

all the preparation and work involved, it still makes it

all worth it. Having to share it all with family and

friends at the Seder and remembering our history, as

well as our level of observance, bring it all into

focus. Seeing all this continue from the past, now the

present, and for future generations, including our

twin grandchildren, and the new addition last sum-

mer, makes it all worth it. Making this the most

meaningful holiday is always first and foremost for

all of us.

We all hope and pray that this will be a time for

peace, here, and in Israel. So go and enjoy the mat-

zah and more. I know Marilyn and our family will.

A Zeisen Pesach to one and all. “Chag Kasher v’

sameyach”.

From Jeff Forman, President

Pesach is always a great holiday because it comes

at a time when we are coming out of the winter and

into the spring. We will no longer be shuttered up

inside to get away from the frigid temperatures.

Birds will be chirping, grass will be starting to turn

green again, and that feeling of renewal will be in the

air. As we leave our forced hibernations, this is also

the time when we will be getting together with family

and friends for the annual seders, renewing long

standing family traditions. As we do so, let us try to

add new faces into our celebrations, and create new

traditions. Let us try to remember that there are some

in the congregation who would love an invitation to a

seder. We also have congregants who, because of the

loss of a loved one, are now alone and could desper-

ately use a smile and a hand of friendship. We tell

the story of the Exodus because we left Egypt as a

“family” of Jews. We would not have made it to the

promised land without helping each other. May we

continue to be that family, reaching out and being

there for each other along the way.

Joan and I wish all of you a wonderful holiday.

Discretionary Funds

A contribution to the Discretion-ary Fund allows Rabbi Shapiro and Rabbi Dinin to help those in need to address difficult situations im-mediately. It also enables new programs and ideas to enhance what we offer to our congregation and community. Often, speakers and classes, books and materials, programs and commemorations, are funded through the Discre-tionary Fund in order to avoid a financial burden on our operating budget. Your contributions “in honor of” or “in memory of” are always appropriately acknowl-edged. If you appreciate some-thing that the synagogue and/or staff have done, a contribution to the Discretionary Fund enables more to be done for the benefit of all. Think of the Discretionary Fund when you think of saying, “thanks for a job well done”.

Both Rabbi Shapiro and Rabbi Dinin have a Discretionary Fund for their use.

TRANSFER (SALE) OF CHOMETZ

In order to conform with the Laws of Passover, it is necessary to dispose of all chometz that one has on his premises. This is done by making arrangements with the Rabbi for the sale to a non-Jew before 11:30 am, Friday, March 30, 2018. Rabbi Shapiro will act as the agent for all who authorize him to do so. Please call 410-653-7485 or visit the office, in order to com-plete this vital Mitzvah. IT IS MOST IMPORTANT THAT THIS BE DONE. (See “Sale of Chometz Authorization” below). Chometz should not be eaten until the chometz is re-purchased, Sat-urday night, April 7, 2018, at 9:00 pm. Please be careful about buying from a store that has not “Sold its Chometz”. It is customary to contribute to the Rabbi’s Discretionary Fund when submitting this form. Funds are used to help people with Passover purchases.
