The Green SMS Service is offered by the Greening Kenya Initiative (GKI), a flagshipprogramme coordinated by the Office of the Prime Minister of Kenya, which main aim andobjective is to catalyse demand-driven green consumerism, backed by a strong, greenindustrial revolution and enhanced environmental protection through public participation ingreen initiatives.

Through the service people interested in environmental sustainability, the green economy andgreen consumerism, can receive the latest news no matter where in the country they are.

The subscriber has different option to subscribe to the Green SMS Service.

In general to subscribe to a group of the Green SMS Service the person only has to send a SMSwith the keyword to the number of the Service.

The costs are only those of a regular SMS to a Safaricom line. Receiving the SMS from the

Green SMS Service is free.free.free.free. In case people wish to unsubscribe, they just have to write a SMSwith the keywords to the number.Every mobile phone number can be subscribes to as many different groups as the person wouldlike.

For the subscribers there are almost no costs involved to use the SMS Service. To subscribe toeach group the subscriber needs to send a SMS with the keyword to the number of the SMSService. The costs for sending the SMS does not differ from sending a SMS text to any othernormal mobile phone number in Kenya.
