EDITOR’S letter

What a year it has been. A year full of challenges, fun, new friends, some sad and lots of happy moments.

Being able to share our stories with you through this magazine has definitely been one of my personal highlights. Sure, it may not be as fancy and well structured as the big magazines out there, but believe me, the amount of fun, love and dedication that goes into each issue is unmatched.

There have been moments when I thought it wouldn’t be possible to make the magazine but my dear friend, the creative mind behind this magazine, Polona Javornik would always share some words of encouragement and would make me believe it would be alright. And so far she’s always been correct. Without her, this magazine wouldn’t be possible.

If you like our magazine and appreciate our efforts, if you enjoy the stories we share with you, please like us and share your thought with us on Facebook. We really love to hear from you. Those of you that have submitted stories, ideas and suggestions to us, we thank you. It’s always wonderful to hear from you and just keep all those suggestions coming.

I hope you’ve had a good year and that you have learned some good and valuable life lessons. Hope you’ve achieved what you wanted to achieve and basically hope that 2013 has been everything you wanted it to be. For 2014 I wish you nothing but the very best. January 1st is the first blank page of a 365-page book, the story is yours to write, make your story a good one.

Holiday dinners at my home include family and always a few friends that can’t make it home for the holidays; at my table there is always an extra chair and plate for an unexpected guest. We start with a glass of bubbly and crab, a San Francisco tradition (my home town). Our meal includes of vegan dishes, some fish and it is the one time of year I cook meat for the meat eaters in my life. One of my favorite side dishes to make is potatoes au gratin….seriously! It is the only time of year I truly indulge. I make it every year and sadly (or not) we never have any leftovers. It is basically potatoes, butter, cream, Gruyere cheese more butter and cream and my secret ingredient… a hint of cinnamon! My favorite thing to wear is my new Chai, long sleeve, floor length wrap dress. Lucky me, I have been wearing the fit samples and have had so many compliments on it. It’s so comfortable and sexy… think Eco-Chic meets Studio 54.

PERI wishes all a beautiful holiday season filled with peace+love!

My friends & family, we are an eclectic international bunch of characters. I say this, as we are all so different; entrepreneurs, socialites, free spirits, open-minded and or opinionated. Each and every single one of us has a different opinion about the Holiday Season. There are those that love everything about Christmas and what it stands for, Including Wham’s “Last Christmas”. And there are those that are still wondering what all the fuzz is about. But the one common denominator, the thing we all love, is that the holiday season is that time of the year where we all come together. We take some time off our busy schedules and reflect on the past year. It’s also a time where we look for any excuse to open up another bottle of bubbles. We hope you too will take some time off, party a little, reflect and be happy for all the successes of the past year and all lessons learned. Use all your experiences of this year, your life’s lessons wisely to make your next year even brighter.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Every year it’s starts at the same time, but it always feels like it’s the first time, December 1st and the lights switch on.A big tree is placed in the middle of the city center of Ljubljana and signifies the start of Christmas, a joyous time for people to come together. If there is snow, well......that really is the icing on the cake. The scenery makes for a great feel-good movie or a beautiful fairytale. In the old town of Ljubljana you’ll find a Christmas market with stands offering Christmas goodies.

And the best part a lot of them are serving mulled wine. For me that is a must-have, must-enjoy. It’s a drink that signifies the arrival of the Holiday Season and that’s how my friends and I officially open the Holiday Season.

A Happy holiday season to you all!

Not having a Christian background, instead of celebrating Christmas, Chinese celebrate the Spring Festival, also known as the Chinese New Year. The date varies annually as it’s celebrated based on the lunar calendar.

To me The Chinese New Year, Chun Jie in Chinese, means family gathering, the colour red & fireworks. There used to live a monster called Nian at the end of the year. He was horrible and took away people’s food and belongings. Nian, the monster, was chased away during his rampage by people wearing red clothing and making loud noises. Chines New year to wear red clothes and the firework resembles the noise. Traditionally celebrations last for 15 days. During this time families gather on the last day of the year and wait for the final count down to welcome the New Year. For children, part of the tradition is receiving Red Paper Pockets, these are filled with money. Plus this is the time to make lots of noise using firecrackers.

My favourite part is the fortune seeking in the dumplings. Some coins arehidden in a pot of dumplings. If one of them happens to be on your plate, this means you’ll have good luck throughout the next year. Our next New Year celebration is January 31st 2014. Maybe a bit too early but I already wish you all a happy new year.

V i intage is absolutely sustainable, what better than to reuse or recycle

what we already have. Why throw away the clothes you have, some of it must be perfectly good. As we can always use some stimulation, we’ve asked some of our vintage-fashionista friends to share some of their Vintage tips with us. Check out the beautiful pictures from Miss Vandelej & See how Jasmine Zhu from “Posing with Vintage” puts together her vintage inspired looks. May their stories inspire you this holiday season.Buy something new at greenthisseason.com, something you know will last, or simply reuse something you already have.

WHAT DOES MISS VANDELEJ MEAN TO YOU? IS IT JUST A BOUTIQUE OR DOES THE ‘’MISS’’ REPRESENT THE PRODUCTS YOU ARE SELLING?

WHAT ERA IS YOUR FAVOURITE?

DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE INTERNATIONAL VINTAGE SHOP?

WHAT CAN WE EXPECT FROM MISS VANDELEJ IN THE FUTURE?

Miss Vandelej is my ID; my dreams, creative passion and the desire to escape to some other era. Miss Vandelej offers unique vintage clothing, secondhand clothing and accessories, styling and photography with a touch of the past and everything else that inspires me. Miss Vandelej does not necessarily represent my personal style. Styling of fashion photographs is a creative game where I try to construct the ideas I get while watching films. I tend to exaggerate a little too. A while ago I watched

“Clueless” again and that became the main inspiration behind my last project VINTAGE: LOLITA

With the Miss Vandelej concept I would also like to stress the growing issue around today’s mainstream fashion and introduce vintage clothing as “the icing on the cake”, refine even the simplest fashion style.

I don’t have a specific favourite fashion era. I’m inspired by impulses I get from the 50s Beatniks, Eddie Sedgwick’s 60s style, everything Kate Hudson wore as bohemian Penny Lane in that 70’s inspired film Almost fabulous, the eccentric 80s and that comfortable 90s grunge fashion.

Most definitely Sputnik! A vintage store I discovered on the high street of Reykjavik – Laugavegur.

We will continue to work with talented make up artists, aspiring fashion photographers and beautiful models and also participate in nostalgic fashion fairs that offer vintage inspired fashion. I also dream of a Miss Vandelej magazine and an actual store in the old part of town.

Do you make New Year’s resolutions? Most of us do at some stage in our life. As December draws to a close, you make a list of great goals and you’re determined to stick to them as long as possible. But do you actually persevere? And for how long?

We all know that a lot of us stumble early on. The idea of more exercise and no alcohol is great, but when it’s raining and you crave a glass of wine after a long day at work, it’s very easy to give in to temptation and open a bottle of Pinot and put up your feet in front of the telly. So is there really any point in having New Year’s resolutions at all?

Well, how do you feel when you think about having resolutions? Do they make you excited and energetic because you can’t wait to see the benefits and enjoy the changes they will create in your life? Or do you get that sinking, anxious feeling because you dread not being able to eat, drink or do all the things you want?

Your motivation is what counts. Why are you making these New Year’s resolutions in the first place? Do you feel you should workout more or do you want to become fitter and look better? Do you believe you should eat healthy foods

and drink less or do you want to live a healthier life?

If you feel you should do something, it’s probably the outside world that’s

your main motivator: web blogs extolling the virtues of Bikram yoga or strict fitness regimes, friends swearing that carbs are the devil’s work.

If, however, you want to do something you’re acting on a desire from within: you want to feel better by exercising more and eating healthier foods, and you want to buy organic and ethical clothes because you feel passionate about helping to protect the environment and create a fair society.

And guess which kind of motivation helps you succeed in the long term. Yep, of course following your passion is a much more powerful motivator for making changes stick than doing something because others say it’s good for you. But be careful, we’re all great at telling ourselves that we want to do something, when in fact we only think we should. Don’t people always say they want to give up smoking and then they don’t succeed? Well, perhaps that’s because they don’t really want to quit, and they only think they should.Setting goals for yourself is great, and it’s wonderful to want to make positive changes in your life. But just be honest with yourself and make sure your New Year’s resolutions come from your heart. Because your passions will keep you motivated, not just until January 3rd, but right through the entire year and beyond... if that’s what you want.

HAPPY HOLIDAY SEASON!
