Operations Overview
The GWE plant breaks down whey-rich waste water (“feedstock”) into usable energy,a biosolid that is then used for fertilizer, and wastewater. The whey-rich feedstock isconcentrated and high in carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, and phosphates.
47% of feedstock comes from within the Village of Turtle Lake (“VTL”),and another45% of feedstock comes from other local plants. The industries that represent this92% of feedstock employ more than 650 people, including related industries such astrucking and farming.
GWE measures the waste the plant processes as “flow”.GWE is 18% of the size ofthe VTL’swastewater treatment plant, based on flow. Although, GWE takes in53,000lbs of BOD/month.
GWE converts a component of waste, the BOD, into energy. GWE processes nearlyas much BOD that the Village does. Takes in 53,000 pounds of BOD per month. Thewhey-rich feedstock is concentrated, high in carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen andphosphorous.
What happens after GWE treats the feedstock?
GWE first separates the water from the solids.
The solids are concentratedianddewatered from there, and come out of the_plants a substancecomparable to wet mulchcalled “sludge.” Sludge is thenspread o_ntofarm fields for fertilizer,and IS carefully monitoredby the DNR through our permit and nutrient management plans.
Buyer of GWE will need to add sludge storage. Cap X of approximately $1.5 million.
The water called “effluent”) is aerated, with bacteria present, to “eat” any phosphates andnitrogen le in the water.However, thewaterremains to be high in chlorides from the whey—richfeedstock GWE receives from VTL industries.
GWE takes in about 2,500lbs of chlorides/day compared to 1,850lbs VTL takes in per day.

More than 30% of its total revenue
The OdorsGWE simply cannotob/erat_ewith _noodor as it is (1) a wastewater treatment facility,and (2) located in the TL industrial park.
The odor has been a consistent focus of the Receiver’s meetings with the VTL.
Lastsummer, the di ester Erocesswas interru8t_edas everyone agreed that the odorIs intense. As a resu t, GW lost over $600,00 In revenue.
There have been 3 steps taken to address the odor issue at hand:- 1. Misting System
- $75,000 advance by Cat- initiallyused over indoor a_n_goutdoor tanks- Reinstalled in January over indoor tanks
- 2. Plywood Covers- installed in January over Sepafloc
- 3. Chemical Modifications- $100,000 price tag- Finished in the early fall

Odor Issue - Revisited

Additional Steps- Air Scrubber
- BioAirby EcoPure- One air scrubber for the entire plant- Requires duct work
- Start with the DAF —— already enclosed- Timing to installation: 16-20 weeks to operation- Estimated Total Cost = $270,000 (Ex A)
- Enclose/Add Covers- Buildings or Covers over Sepaflocs and AMBs- Building enclosure is recommended
- Avoid membrane cover tears- Enclose tanks and pumps to help with freeze issues
- Timing to completion: Late Summer- Estimated Cost to Enclose AMBs = $45,600 (Ex B). Estimated Cost to Enclose Sepaflocs = $165,000. (Ex C)
