Course Fees

All course providers have their own fee, concession and funding structure, which is subject to change every academic year. What follows is a broad outline of the general fee structure for further education institutions. To support individual learners in your role as a CLC, please refer to the detailed fee information which is available online and in the specific provider’s prospectus.

Free courses: Some courses available in the Royal Borough of Greenwich are free – these are most likely to be ones that are deemed essential for employment, and subsidised by the government, such as Functional Skills courses (English, Maths etc.). There are usually criteria which need to be met to qualify for these free courses, which often stipulate that the learner must:

Be a UK resident Not have any qualifications over a level 2 NVQ (or equivalent) Not be in employment Be in receipt of income-related benefits

Some locally-run organisations, housing associations, libraries and government-funded organisations also offer free training from time to time, which may not be means-tested as above. Contact details for these organisations can be found in Section Four of the Directory.

Partnership with GCC and the opportunity of a Free General Interest Course

The Greenwich CLC project works in partnership with Greenwich Community College (GCC). To promote adult and community learning to people who have been away from learning for a time, GCC offers a free General Interest course to learners who qualify. The key criteria for learners to qualify for this course are listed below (please note that the college reserves the right to review the criteria from time to time and to check learners’ eligibility). Learners must:

Be referred by a CLC Be 19 years or over Live, work or volunteer in the Royal Borough of Greenwich Be a UK resident Not have attended a course at any further or higher education establishment for at least 3 years previously.

If you are accompanying a potential learner to GCC to enrol in a free General Interest course, you will need to take your CLC ID to be photocopied by the college, along with the learner referral form, as proof that the learner has been referred by the CLC project.

5

Page 6: Greenwich Community Learning Champions Directory of ...€¦ · Catering, Hospitality & Retail This category includes cookery, sugar craft, food safety, bar work, retail, first aid

Fee Concessions

Most colleges offer cheaper rates for some of their courses. There are set criteria for eligibility so you will need to check the requirements of each course provider for the relevant course when advising learners. Concessions usually relate to the tuition fee only, so if it is a qualification course, it is likely that the examination cost will still need to be paid.

The most common criteria are that learners must:

Be under 24 years of age Be living in the Borough in question Be in receipt of income-related benefits Not have previously received concessions for the same course

Funding

Most colleges and other further education course providers have a Discretionary Learner Support Fund (or similar funds e.g. Access to Learning, Hardship etc.) available, for which students can apply when enrolling on a course. Again, there will be criteria for eligibility, so please check that the learner you are referring meets the requirements stipulated by the provider. See www.gov.uk/discretionary-learner-support#overview for details.

Family Action is a charity which provides educational and welfare grants to help people begin or continue their studies. See www.family-action.org.uk/what-we- do/grants/educational-grants for full details.

Childcare

Most Further Education training providers have provision for Discretionary Childcare, via their Learner Support Fund in most cases. This should be applied for directly to the provider, as soon as possible, as these funds are limited.

Some colleges also have their own crèche provisions or on-site nursery, which may be a cheaper option – this should be checked directly with the provider.

Learners with childcare needs can also contact Greenwich Family Information Service: tel. 020 89216921, or visit www.royalgreenwich.gov.uk/fis for advice

Jobcentre Plus: assistance with childcare may also be available for people undertaking training that is considered work-focussed by Jobcentre Plus. For more information, contact the local Jobcentre Plus Office: - Woolwich Jobcentre Plus: Nelson House, 50 Wellington Street, Woolwich, SE18 6PY - Eltham Jobcentre Plus: 1 Passey Place, High Street, Eltham, SE9 5DA Head office tel: 0345 604 3719 www.gov.uk/contact-jobcentre-plus

The Point in Woolwich can also offer advice to young learners: 47 Woolwich New Road, SE18 6EW; tel. 020 89218224.

Care to Learn is a scheme to help parents under the age of 20 with childcare costs whilst they are studying, training or volunteering: visit www.direct.gov.uk/caretolearn or call 0800 121 8989 for further details.

Loans

24+ Advanced Learning Loan This is a loan scheme which assists learners who are not eligible for grants to pay the fees that colleges and training providers charge for their Level 3 and 4 courses. It covers courses which begun after 1st August 2013. Basic eligibility criteria are that learners should:

Be 24 years or older on the first day of the course they are undertaking Have lived in the UK for 3 years immediately before the start of the course, and are living in the UK on the first day of the course Not have applied for a loan for the same course (or equivalent) previously Be undertaking a course at a UK-based college or training organisation which is approved for public funding, at Level 3 or 4 (this includes A Levels and Access to Higher Education Diplomas).

There is also a 24+ Advanced Learning Loan Bursary Fund which can help learners with support needs, such as additional help with learning, or with childcare or residential costs.

For further details on 24+ Advanced Learning Loans, click here / www.gov.uk/advancedlearningloans or search the National Careers Service website (https://nationalcareersservice.direct.gov.uk).

Section Two: Adult and Community Learning courses in the Royal Borough of Greenwich

General Interest

General Interest courses consist of a wide range of topics that are focussed on enjoyment and learning rather than gaining a qualification. These courses serve as a great introduction to an area of interest where learners can decide if their chosen topic is an area in which they would like to progress. They also enable learners to get back into education by allowing them to study a subject they enjoy.

Through General Interest courses, learners can also develop their ‘soft skills’ e.g. interpersonal, teamwork and communication, which can help with building confidence and interacting with others successfully.

Below is an alphabetical list of the most popular categories of General Interest Courses, with details of the main local course providers who offer these courses. Please see the providers’ individual websites and prospectuses for more detailed information about courses available, timetable, fees and criteria for concession.

A & AS Levels

A levels are the next step in education after GCSEs. They are equivalent to a Level 3 qualification, and require two years’ study. The first year constitutes an AS (Advanced Subsidiary) Level and is regarded as a qualification in its own right. Learners need an AS Level in a subject to progress to an A Level in it, and they require A Levels (or the equivalent e.g. an Access course) to progress on to university education.

Greenwich Community College

Access courses

An Access course is a Diploma in Higher Education which allows students who have had a break in their education to access higher education – it is a Level 3 qualification and is the equivalent of 2 A Levels. Completing this qualification allows learners to attend university.

Degrees / Undergraduate Studies

Foundation Degree

A Foundation degree is usually a two-year work-related qualification. It equates to a level 4 or 5 qualification, or an HND (Higher National Diploma). Learners are required to have already taken their A levels before beginning a Foundation degree. A Foundation degree is

12

Page 13: Greenwich Community Learning Champions Directory of ...€¦ · Catering, Hospitality & Retail This category includes cookery, sugar craft, food safety, bar work, retail, first aid

recognised as a qualification in its own right, and can also count as the first two years of a Bachelor’s degree.

Bexley College

Bachelor’s Degree

A Bachelor’s degree usually takes three years of full-time study. To undertake a degree, learners need A Levels or the equivalent (e.g. Access Course). If they have already done a foundation degree (as above), they can apply to university to undertake their third undergraduate year in that subject to complete their Bachelor’s Degree.

Postgraduate Studies

Master’s Degree

A Master’s Degree usually requires two years of full-time study, following the completion of a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work-based experience. The criteria for participating in these courses vary from course to course, so learners should discuss their specific circumstances with the course provider. The work for a Master’s Degree is usually a combination of course work and a dissertation.

Vocational Skills

Apprenticeships

Apprenticeships are jobs with incorporated training, so that apprentices can earn while they learn and acquire recognised qualifications ‘on the job’. Apprenticeships take between one and four years to complete, and are available in a wide range of industries, including dentistry, aviation, publishing, retail, accountancy and construction.

Apprentices need to be aged over 16 and over, and to have either Level 2 or Level 3 qualifications in Maths and English. They should be currently out of work, or working for less than 16 hours per week. There is no charge to undertake an apprenticeship for those under 24; those aged 24 and above will need to make a contribution to their training costs.

Higher and degree apprenticeships are also available, which can take learners all the way from level 4 to a full degree whilst working. To undertake this kind of apprenticeship, learners should have A Levels or Level 3 qualifications (or an advanced apprenticeship).

To find out more, visit www.gov.uk/topic/further-education-skills/apprenticeships, search the national database: www.findapprenticeship.service.gov.uk, or browse by location: www.londonapprenticeshipjobs.co.uk

Local organisations who can arrange Apprenticeships include:

The Royal Borough of Greenwich also offers apprenticeships – details here (search www.royalgreenwich.gov.uk )

Pre-apprenticeship training is also available via Global Solution Services (click here for details), search Globalsolutionservices.co.uk, or tel. 020 86654228.

Traineeships offer the chance to gain practical skills and experience by providing trainees with a work placement which combines work experience with skills training. Traineeships can boost skills and experience to enable learners to apply for an apprenticeship, job or placement at a later stage.

Traineeships are for those aged 16-24 who have not yet achieved a full Level 3 qualification (or higher), and who are not currently in a job. Candidates should also be receiving unemployment benefit (seek advice from Jobcentre Plus on how benefit rules apply to traineeships).

See www.gov.uk/find-traineeship for further details.

NVQs

National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs) are work-based qualifications, which can be at level 1-5. (See the chart in Section One for their equivalents). NVQs require learners to be working or volunteering in the area of study, as they are assessed whilst carrying out the work itself.

Many employers allow their staff to study for NVQs in work time.

Greenwich Community College

Greenwich London College

BTEC

BTECs are vocational qualifications which prepare learners for a particular work area – they can be studied full or part-time. Learners need a minimum of 5 GCSE’s at Grade 3 or above to start on a Level 3 course – otherwise a lower-level BTEC can be chosen initially. Level 4 and above BTECs are also available

Section Three: Employment and Career Information

CV Preparation

A Curriculum Vitae (CV) or resumé is an important tool for job-seekers to use to ‘market’ themselves to prospective employers. There are three basic types of CV that job-seekers may choose to use:

Traditional work-based CV: structured with contact details first, followed by work history in chronological order, with education and training last. Academic CV: this is most commonly used by people who have just completed education. It highlights academic achievements and lists work/volunteering history (if any) last. Skills-based CV: this is where the job-seeker’s CV is split into different skills they possess, and relevant experience and job history is highlighted under each section. This type of CV is a good option for those who want to highlight a particular set of skills which has been acquired through various jobs or experiences.

Some useful CV tips include the following:

Two pages is generally considered to be the maximum length for a CV A good rule of thumb is that the CV only needs to mention the last ten years of work experience If there are gaps in work history, they should be explained truthfully, and attention drawn to any skills / experience gained during that time e.g. from volunteering or other non-paid activities. To get started with a CV, a good approach can be to write out all work history, achievements, experience and skills, as well as education and training, without worrying about the length, and then to choose from that master version according to the requirements of each job applied for. The CV can then be edited down to two pages and targeted to match the specification of the role applied for. Proofreading: even the best spellers can miss mistakes in their own work. Spelling, grammar and layout should be checked for accuracy and consistency, and job-seekers may like to consider asking someone else to proof–read their CV before sending it out.

Application Forms

Many jobs require application via a form (either online or paper) rather than by submitting a CV; or sometimes both methods are requested together. Some forms can be lengthy and take a long time to complete. Some useful application form tips include:

16

Page 17: Greenwich Community Learning Champions Directory of ...€¦ · Catering, Hospitality & Retail This category includes cookery, sugar craft, food safety, bar work, retail, first aid

The job description and person specification should be read carefully and each point addressed by giving specific evidence in answer to the questions on the form Proofreading is crucial (as above in CV Tips) It is advisable to draft answers to the questions in Word or similar where work can be saved, then copied and pasted later, in case the application form can’t be saved whilst being completed.

Interview Skills

Even the most experienced people can get pre-interview nerves – they are completely normal, but they can be helped by thorough preparation beforehand.

Interviews can take different forms – they may be one-to-one, conducted by a panel, or via Skype or telephone. Questions may be skill or achievement-related, or competency-based, and the interview may also include a presentation, skills test or role play, depending on the type of job being applied for. If in doubt, job-seekers should call or email their contact at the organisation to which they are applying, and ask about the interview format, in advance, to help them prepare.

Some useful interview tips include: Research the sector, organisation and role as much as possible before the interview Dress smartly, but ensure that you feel comfortable in what you are wearing to help you relax Prepare some questions to ask at the end, to show interest in the role

Training & courses: employability, interview skills, job search etc.

There are often courses on these topics on offer from various providers, and some of these are free to eligible learners. Providers include:

Volunteering Opportunities

Volunteering is a great way to gain practical experience, training, and employment-related skills. It is also a rewarding way for people to support their local community and give something back to society, as well as meeting new people. Numerous organisations in all sectors offer volunteering roles. Those interested in volunteering can contact their local volunteer centre or visit the website www.do-it.org for more information.
