Parent Interviews
On Tuesday 4 April Greenwood conducted its Parent Reporting Day where students and
parents were able to discuss the Progress Reports of students during Term 1. We are very
grateful to have the opportunity to discuss the progress of students and pleased with the
number who attended. The meetings are important for all years as good habits need to be
established early in the year and students in Year 10, 11 and 12 need to understand what is
expected for WACE achievement. The next Parent Reporting Day will take place on
Wednesday 28 June from 4-7pm.
ANZAC Day Ceremony
On Friday 28 April Greenwood College conducted its ceremony for students, staff and parents. We were joined by
Flight Lieutenant Jane Kee who is a doctor representing the RAAF.
The ceremony was conducted most professionally and the student’s behaviour was exemplary so much so that
parents and staff commented on the success of the ceremony. At the ceremony we acknowledge those who
have sacrificed so much as well instil in students what values in life students should learn.
Year 7 Lightning Carnival
All Year 7 students participated in this carnival on Thursday 4 May. Students were well behaved and enjoyed the
opportunity to compete in competitive sport for the day. Given the concern on student fitness from Health bodies,
these carnivals are vitally important and I seek parent support for all students to participate when given the
opportunity.
Year 8 Debating Team
The Year 8 Debating Team has been very successful and are doing extremely well in their division of the Western
Australian Debating League, having won three out of three debates. This is a huge achievement for the students
and Greenwood College.
The members of the team include Asmaa Hameed, Jacque Walters, Cyrine Almodovar, Anne Cao and Konrad
Dumpleton with Marcel Masque Salgado (Year 11) as coach and supported by Ms Amor-Robertson and Ms
McDonald.
Assessment
At the time of writing we are conducting Year 7 and 9 NAPLAN and Year 12 Externally Set Tasks for Foundation and
General courses.
This will be followed by Year 10 exams as well as Year 11/12 exams.
I wish all students the very best of luck with their Semester 1 results. While results are important, what is more
important is that students have endeavoured to place maximum effort into their studies.
Leave
Mr Johnston is currently on leave and will be returning in week 6, May 29 and we wish him well on his well-deserved
break. I have had the pleasure of taking his place as Principal for this time. My most
rewarding aspect of this role is seeing the outstanding work our students and staff are
involved in.

ANZAC Remembrance Assembly
On Friday April 28, we held our ANZAC Remembrance Assembly. Greenwood College is
immensely proud of all our students who remained quiet and respectful during the formal
proceedings. The spirit of ANZAC is to be revered and honoured. Schools willingly take on the
role as a custodian, with the responsibility of passing on the tradition, relevance and meaning
of the ANZAC history and legacy. Many parents were glowing in their praise of the assembly
and the behaviour of our students.
Special thanks to all Student Councillors who presented at the assembly who were given the
task of having a key role. They were nervous during the week leading up to the assembly and
it was clear they were all desperate not to disappoint.
Thanks also to Mr Filidei, Mr Frisina and Mr Salmon for their outstanding efforts.
Student of the Term “Burger Week”.
During the last week of Term 1, Student Services put on a “Burger Week”. Students from all six year
groups who had been nominated or selected for ‘Student of the Term’ were invited as were all the
Student Councillors, Monday Maths students and our unbeatable Debating Team. This added up to
over 400 students. Obviously this required quite a bit of logistical planning and cooking. The
concept was very successful and thank you to the Student Services Team for their work in making
sure the week went well.
Winter Uniform
We are now heading into the wet and windy season. Students have a
responsibility to ensure that as they walk out the front door of their home
each morning, they are in 100% full Greenwood College uniform. Girls
can wear either navy blue or skin coloured stockings. Leggings are not
allowed, nor are beanies and ugg boots. Undershirts are permitted only if
they are plain navy blue or plain white. Scarves are definitely allowed
but must also be either plain navy blue or plain white or preferably a
Greenwood College scarf available from the uniform shop.
All uniform worn must have the Greenwood College logo. Any other
type of clothing is not permitted. There will no doubt be very cold
mornings this winter and the expectation is that students will arrive to school warm but only wearing our uniform.
Parents are reminded that the Uniform Shop has plenty of stock at the moment and it would be a good idea to get in
quick and buy the jumpers, jackets needed to keep their child(ren) warm while at school.
Online versus offline behaviour
The issue of social media behaviour among students is an issue for all schools; primary and secondary; public and
private. Anecdotally, we have seen an improvement in online behaviour for our students. We put this down to the
way in which Student Services deals with this type of behaviour and also the interventions and strategies Student
Services has implemented recently to change the culture of inappropriate online behaviour.
Students HAVE to behave online the way they would behave offline. There should be no difference. If students don’t
use offensive and abusive language offline then don’t use it online. If you do not bully or harass offline then don’t do
that online.
The size of the online audience can never be quantified. Students need to accept that there are way more people
watching and reading online than they think.
Year 11 and 12 ATAR Exams.
ATAR Exams commence Friday May 26 and conclude Friday June 2. It is
important to note that there will be no timetabled classes for all Year 11
and 12 students during this time. Students involved in exams have
received their personalised Exam Timetables and relevant and important
Exam information has either been emailed or posted to parents.
To students sitting exams, I wish you the very best.
Upcoming events – Year 11 Formal... Friday June 9 at Hillarys Yacht Club.

YEAR 11 SENIOR SCHOOL SELECTION SHEETS DUE AT FRONT OFFICE
Good luck to the Year 11 students in Career and Enterprise who are out on industry
placement this term. For some students, this is their first contact with the world of work. Just a
reminder that students who are sick or unable to attend their work placement need to make
three phone calls: one to the employer, one to school and one to Western Workplace
Learning (Fiona Gatey 0402 960 506).
Year 10 Upper School Selection 2018
The Year 10 Upper School Subject Selection Counselling with Year 10s during their HASS
period is going well and I should be completing this in the next few weeks. Students will soon
receive their 2018 Senior School Handbook and the Teacher Recommendation Form. This
needs to be completed in the next few weeks to give us a very good indication of the most
appropriate academic pathway for your child.
Please do not hesitate to call me if you have any queries about the Upper School Selection process.

Mrs Smith Canteen Manager Canteen
The college canteen runs on the kind generosity of a small group of volunteers who help keep the canteen running
smoothly. These lovely ladies would love extra help from the wider college community for 2017… If you know of a
relation who would love to help out on any given day, for any given time from 11am–2pm, please contact our
Canteen Manager, Mrs Michelle Smith on 9447 1262 or email [email protected]. No experience
is necessary, just a friendly smile… and for helping out you get to meet our fabulous students, staff and enjoy a free
morning tea /lunch. We look forward to meeting you...
Back at school and Term 2 starts off with a bang… Year 11 & 12 exams, NAPLAN testing,
Lightning Carnivals and much more. It is definitely going to be a very busy term, so I hope
everyone had sufficient rest in the school holidays for the term ahead.
Every year Mission Australia gives students between 15-19 years of age the opportunity to voice their concerns
around youth mental health. From the survey, issues on the increase are coping with stress, school or study problems,
body image, depression and suicide.
To help our school tackle some of these issues, a committee
made up of Greenwood College students has been
developed, aptly named “Champion’s for Change”. What
is unique about this committee is these fabulous students
are the voice for all Greenwood students, sharing valuable
information back to staff and students on some of the issues
young people face here at school. It is common knowledge
that students will seek support among their peers first, then
parents, family and the internet. It is exciting that the
students at Greenwood College feel motivated to provide
ground level support to their peers.
As parents, not knowing how to help or what kind of help is
out there can be overwhelming and stressful, but there are
lots of ways you can help your child. You can:
Listen and remind them that you believe in them
Talk through the situation with them and offer another way of looking at things
Help them to explore options for getting support
Get them more involved in the things that they enjoy
Help them in practical ways – transport to work or sporting commitments
Touch base regularly to see if they need anything
Remind them of self-care – eating well, exercising and getting enough sleep.

Year 12 Drama Play—”Pass The Butler”
And so passes, "Pass The Butler"…..Congratulations to the Year 12 Drama class on their witty and enjoyable
performance of this classic Eric Idle play.
While the students acknowledged the difficulty of the text and the challenge it would present they were determined
to bring this highly amusing piece of theatre to life. I was impressed with their resolve and all the hard work they put
in. They thoroughly enjoyed creating their English characters and antics they got up to. The play was a mixture of
humour and a typically English aristocratic view of life and the students did an excellent job of discovering their inner
snobbery. Well Done! Mr Mazzulla

Flying activity has recommenced. I was able to undergo flying training to qualify to fly twin-
engine aeroplanes. This has meant including these high performance machines in the list of
aircraft that students can choose from when participating in familiarisation flights within the
Program.
I am also pleased to announce that CHC Helicopters (Australia) has kindly offered to donate
a Bell-412 part-task trainer to the Greenwood College Aviation Program. The machine has
just been assembled at Head Office, and is due for installation early June. CHC Helicopters
are very interested in our program, and will be attending the “Zero to Hero” assembly
scheduled for 23 June this year. The Chief Pilot and Communications Manager will be talk to
the year 11 and 12 Aviation students after the presentation.

2017 will see a number of ‘firsts’ for soccer at Greenwood College. It will be the first time the College has fielded a
Senior Girls team and an U/16 Boys team in the School Sport WA Interschool Soccer Tournament that is run after
school throughout Term 2.
Based on the success of our Senior Boys teams in the 2015 and 2016 seasons, we have decided to expand the
program and have formed a Senior Girls Team coached by Ms Meg Cook. Consisting of girls from Year 9-12 they
train hard on Tuesday mornings and throughout the week in their Phys Ed classes. To promote youth, we have also
established an U/16 Boys team consisting of mostly Year 9s and some Year 8s coached by myself to build on their
already existing skills and experience in order to prepare them for the rigours of Senior Boys Soccer when they reach
upper school. The talented senior boys team who have made the finals two years in a row will be coached by Mr
Dale Gannaway.
As the song goes, ‘from little things, big things grow.’ What started as one team of boys in 2015 has now grown into
three teams incorporating boys and girls of all ages and nationalities proving that Soccer is well and truly ‘The World
Game’ here at Greenwood College!
The fixtures below are correct at the time of writing and all have a 4pm kick off. Our home ground is the college
soccer oval at the bottom of the campus off Maple Street.

A couple of weeks ago, the Greenwood College Debating Team, consisting of five Year 8
students, competed in their first ever debate at St Stephen's Duncraig, against Lake
Joondalup Baptist College. We were the negative team and the topic was "that we
regret the focus on ATAR in schools". This was a challenging topic for Year 8 students who
started off by asking, "What's ATAR?"
The debate was very close, and the other team was good, but our kids were better and
we won!!!
We are very proud of them. They put in a tremendous amount of work to prepare for the
debate, demonstrated great research skills, persuasive techniques, critical thinking, quick
thinking, team work, time management and speaking skills. A big congratulations to team
members Ann Cao, Konrad Dumpleton, Cyrine Almaodovar, Asmaa Hameed and
Jacqueline Walters as well as their brilliant coach Marcel Masque Salgado. Ann, Konrad
and Cyrine were this week's debaters and the gave excellent performances. The
adjudicator couldn't believe it was their very first debate! Ann Cao scored the highest
individual score in the debate.
Their next debate was on Tuesday 4 April. In that debate we are the affirmative side. The topic is "that we should ban
all political donations". This time it was Asmaa Hameed, Jacque Walters, Ann Cao debating and supported by Konrad,
Cryine and their dedicated coach, Marcel Masque Salgado. We won by a narrow margin of two points! Well done! It
was a very hard fought debate against some fellow friends at Duncraig SHS, which made it tougher. The students
researched the topic thoroughly and stayed on at school until 6pm working on their debate. The students were thrilled
to have won for a second time in a row.
Their next debate was against a very polished St. Mark’s Anglican Community School in Hillarys with Konrad, Cyrine
and Jacque arguing in the affirmative. Their debate was “should people be allowed to rebuild in communities that
have been destroyed by bushfires?”. This was a very close fought match and once again the debate was very close
and we scraped a win by only one point this time.
Their next debate is fast approaching
and the students will be arguing the
affirmative side on the topic “that
primary and high schools should
prioritise the teaching of local
Indigenous language over the
teaching of foreign languages”.
The students are thrilled and we are
very proud of our group of debaters
and coach for all their hard work they
have put into each and every
debate. Good luck for the next round.

Year 9 Camp Summary
Police Rangers @ Greenwood
A Police Rangers unit has operated at Greenwood College for more than fifteen
years. Over that time the police officers running the unit have enabled many
students to develop their life skills and so become more effective members of the
community.
At a time of parental dismay at the anti-social behaviour of some young people, the work of the Police Rangers
provides a useful way of channelling young people’s energies in a positive direction. Important ideals of loyalty, duty
and service are central to the ethos of the Rangers.
There are many recreational activities provided by the Rangers and they have been arranged so that students can
proceed at their own pace. Some of the activities involve drills, radio communications, navigation, community
service, leadership training, camping and physical challenges.
Membership of the Rangers is open to all students in Years 7-12. No fees are payable, although a small contribution is
requested to cover the cost of the Big Camp.
The Rangers meet at Greenwood College on Mondays during the school year from 4-6pm. Inquiries should be
directed to Tessa Morawski on [email protected] or mobile 0430 383 603.
On Monday 25 March, 99 Year 9 student’s set off on an
adventure I am sure they will remember for the rest of their
lives. The 2017 annual Year 9 Camp was again held at Ern
Haliday Camp School in Hillarys. The camp went for three
days and the students participated in a number of various
activities designed to improve their confidence,
strengthen social bonds and have fun!
We arrived at the camp school at 10:30am and students were organised into their groups for the duration of the camp.
Once the groups were established there was a little time to walk around the camp area and familiarise themselves
with the facilities. At 11am the first structured activity began (see page 16 photos). The weather was sensational and it
was very clear the student were very excited. Students participated in a number of activities throughout the day
including flying fox, rock climbing, archery, bike hike, swimming at the beach, team building and who could forget the
big swing! At 6pm students assembled in the hall for dinner and desert followed by a short break. Then it was time for
the scavenger hunt and the quiz night.
Day two began with a big cooked breakfast in the dining hall and there was some very tired teenagers lining up for
breakfast. After a short briefing on the day’s events, students headed off for their first structured activity. The plan for
the day was much the same as day one with three structured 90 minute activities with morning tea and lunch in
between. The students were absolutely exhausted by dinner time and on this occasion we made sure we organised
enough time for desert. Shortly after dinner students gathered up their pillows, sleeping bags and popcorn and sat on
the grass area in front of their dorms ready to enjoy the outdoor cinematic experience. After much discussion it was
decided to watch The Jungle Book. Rather appropriate I felt considering the movie depicts a lost child’s ability to fend
for himself away from the sanctity of his home!
Day three was our final day and many students look like it was going to be a struggle to make it to the end! We had
one final activity before tiding up the dorms and prepared to leave the camp school for the movies. We arrived at
Grand Cinemas right on schedule, giving students enough time to make purchases from the candy bar and be seated
to enjoy the Baby Boss. I have to admit it was a real struggle to keep my eyes open. Although the movie was very
entertaining my energy levels were well and truly depleted. Finally we arrived back at Greenwood College at 2:30pm,
unloaded the bus and sat on the oval for a short debrief. It would be remiss of me if I didn’t acknowledge all of the
teachers and support staff who gave, so kindly, of their time to attend and supervise the group. A very special thank
you to Paul Frisina, Georgia Page, Blair Law, Melissa Macoboy, Dave Walczak, Susan Earle, Sarah Asher, Jessica
Bennett, Murray Williams and Fil Filidei. We all agreed, the students had a wonderful time!

MUSIC DEPARTMENT: NEW APPOINTMENT FOR 2017
With the continued growth and success of the Music Department at Greenwood College, we are pleased to
announce the appointment of a second Classroom Teacher for 2017. Mrs Grace Burnside has a long history with
Greenwood College and it’s Music Department and we are very pleased to have her working alongside us once more
in 2017. At present, she will be taking Year 7 and Year 8 classes on Mondays and Thursdays while continuing in her
position as Vocal Ensemble Accompanist on Thursday afternoons. Parents are welcome to contact her at
[email protected] should you ever wish to be in touch with her for any reason if not simply to
welcome her to Greenwood College.
MUSIC CAMP & PRIMARY SCHOOL MUSIC TOUR
Payments and forms continue to roll in. We currently have 30 students paid for in full, 35 medical forms submitted and 3
people paying regular instalments as part of payment plan. While it is not unusual to see many payments coming in
later than earlier, please be reminded that there are not as many places available as there are students eligible to
attend. Paying earlier will ensure that your child has a place reserved for them on camp. Our students are already
quite excited about this event and I look forward to another great Camp this year. We will be performing at Goollelal,
Dalmain, Greenwood and West Greenwood Primary Schools on this year’s Primary School Tour. I am very pleased to
announce that due to more students attending (sharing the cost around) as well as considerable discount/subsidy
from the Parent Music Committee, the camp fees will be $225 per student. Please note that the camp is specifically for
the purpose of giving ensembles the opportunity for intense rehearsal in preparation for performances. As such, all
members of the Concert Band, Swing Band, Vocal Ensemble, Classical Guitar Ensemble and the Rock Bands are able
and expected to attend. There are places for 114 students. Please get your forms and payment in as soon as you can.
Due Dates
Friday 26 May: Payment of $225 Music camp/PS tour fees (see the attached form for payment options and
payment plan information)
Friday 26 May: Submission of completed medical forms
Thursday 15 June: Submission of signed student pick-up procedure form if student making their own way home or
with another student’s parent after camp
Friday 16 June: Donation towards the morning/afternoon tea
Friday 16 June: Submission of any and all medication to the First Aid Officer before boarding the bus
YEAR 11 MUSIC PREFECT
Year 7-12 Music Classes were given time in term 1 for students to cast their votes as to which of the Year 11 boys they
would like to have represent them as the Year 11 Music Prefect. Nadia Dumpleton was elected the Year 11 Music
Prefect last year and as was the case with previous Prefects, automatically moves into the now vacant Year 12 Music
Prefect position so that at least one of the two prefects will have already done the job before, knows what to do and
can teach the other. We always have 1 male prefect and 1 female prefect, with one of them being in Year 11 and the
other in Year 12. Should any students have not had the opportunity to vote last term for any reason, if they wish to -
they will need to have cast their votes by Friday 20 May. Should they wish to vote, they can do so by coming up to the
Music Department or Library to complete the Music Prefect survey on Moodle during lunch or recess up until that date.
The Music Prefects currently take on the following duties;
MC Winter Concert
MC Music Dinner
Concert Band warm-up/tune-up when required
Oversee stage set-up
Bring Music student opinions, comments, questions, etc - to the attention of the Teacher in Charge of Music
Bring Music student proposals to the attention of the Parent Music Committee
Help strengthen communication between the students at the Music Staff/Committee and vice-versa
The role is a developing one that may change slightly as the years roll by, but this is their current job description. After
counting up the students’ votes, I will be in touch after 20 May to announce the newly elected Year 11 Music Prefect
for 2017.
INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC SURVEY
An email has been sent to parents of Music Department members asking them to go to Surveymonkey.com and have
their child complete a 10 question survey on their experience with Instrumental Music as a member of the SIM/IMSS
Program last year. Due to the course this year, we are unable to take time away from the required curriculum to have
the students complete this survey during their normal Music classes. We are therefore relying on them to do this survey
at home. Please encourage them to complete the survey by Friday 20 May. Last year was quite a successful one in my
opinion. We had continued improvement in the areas of instrumental attendance and ensemble attendance.
However, I am very keen to continue that trend even further in order to help our student realise their dreams and their
potential in Music. Your help, by not only having your child complete their survey (link below) but also by completing
this anonymous survey yourselves is greatly appreciated.

A selected group of Year 8, 9 and 10 students have commenced a project producing a large acrylic mural painted
on marine ply panels.
The students are working in a team and cooperative process with able occupants of the Myvista Aged Care facility
on Wanneroo road Balcatta.
The design is primarily a landscape whereby local flora and fauna are the main focus and subject matter of the
overall illustration.
Very bright colours and a stylised linear appearance allow for a vivid representation which was designed by Mel, a
professional artist employed by Myvista.
The project will take approximately nine weeks and the students work from 12.30 pm to 3pm each Wednesday
afternoon.
Further updated and progressive images will follow!

IEC Students—Flavia Panariello and Babak Zarei
Hi everyone, welcome to Term 2. We are the IEC reps, Flavia – from Italy and Babak – from
Afghanistan. For those who don’t know, the IEC is divided into 2 levels. These levels are: Level
one that is composed of 3.1, 3.2, 3.3 and 3.4. These levels help you with the English base, and
then you go to Level two that is composed of 4.1, 4.2 and 4.3. Level two helps you to prepare
yourself for mainstream. We have been in 3.2, 3.3, 3.4, 4.1 and 4.3 and we can tell you that it has helped us very
much.
This term is very important for the IEC. The 4.1, 4.2 and 4.3 classes will graduate. Some students are going to speak at
the graduation day about their country and their life before and after the IEC. Some of the students will go to other
schools and some of them will continue at Greenwood College. Everyone is working hard and hoping to graduate
with good marks.
The 4.3 classes are preparing for year 10 and last term they had the OLNA test for the first time. It was the first
challenge for them. Other IEC students are starting to prepare for the World Day assembly later in the year; we are
very excited and nervous.
The Year 7s have had a fantastic start to Term 2 so far! We don’t have much to talk about
yet, but we have got a few big events to tell you about.
Last term we had our ANZAC Assembly, where we paid our respects to those who fought for
our country at Gallipoli.
Recently we had our interschool Lightning Carnival: A full day of competitive (but also friendly) sport events. We
competed in five sports: Netball, Soccer, Basketball, Football and Volleyball. Everyone had an amazing time and
our teams did great, undefeated or not so undefeated. Everyone played extremely well but at the same time kept
a good sense of respect and sportsmanship for the team they were competing against. In week 3 the Year 7s and
9s had NAPLAN testing. I can’t talk too much about the Year 9s, but we are relieved it’s over! I hope everyone did
great or at least the best they can do. The “Champions for Change” have a lot of things planned for this term,
including a brand new “Mentor” program. The Mentor program is a program where you’re paired up with a student
that you can talk to about any problems you have. If you have a problem that you would like to talk to a student
about, please see Mr Filidei in Student Services so that we can help sort out your problem. Don’t worry, you’ll be
paired up with someone who you can relate to. Everyone in The Champions for Change are there to help students.
For the rest of the year, we’ll be adding a Staff Profile to the end of our newsletter entry for you to learn more about
the staff you’re around every day. This month we interviewed our wonderful year coordinator: Ms Arns.
[staff picture] Profile
Name: Meredith Arns
Hobbies: Swimming and water polo
Likes: All animals, spending time with friends and going on holidays
Dislikes: Bad grammar and winter (I hate the cold)
Role in the school: English/HASS teacher and Year 7 Coordinator
Advice for year 7s: Start good habits now! This will make the rest of your high school career easier. Also, be kind to everyone. Good karma will come back to you.

Year 9—Anne Mansell and Mark Stephenson
Year 8—Jacque Walters and Jackson Walker
What’s up Year 8s? We’re back again! Last term was great, there were a lot of fun events
and the Year 8s were really well behaved. It is now Term 2 and we hope it is just as good as
the term before. Now to mention some of the highlights from last term -
There was the River Cruise early on in Term 1. We’ve all mostly forgotten about it now right? The theme was to dress up
as something that started with G or C. There were cats, cheerleaders, gangstas, gentlemen and so many more. The
teachers even dressed up! Ms Page went as a Grandma! We had so much fun dancing and eating heaps of pizza.
The DJ played great music and the dance floor was always filled. At the end of the night, prizes were handed out for
the best dressed. From the teachers, Mr Frisina won the prize dressed as a cowboy. He even had his own horse! The
Year 8 prizes went to Aiden Barry (who went as a Ghostbuster) and Jacque Walters (who went as a green witch) for
best dressed, Josephine Irvine for most social and to Gemma Arnold for best dancer. Then at 10 pm, all the parents
came to pick us up. We would like to thank all the teachers who put their time, money and effort into this fun night.
Before the River Cruise we had our immunisations, and BOY was there complaining! Everyone got called out to get
their shots and for the rest of the day the whole of Year 8 was moaning and groaning.
We should also mention the great Scitech excursion that some Year 8 classes went on at the end of the term, as well as
the incredible efforts of our Year 8 debating team. The debate team members Ann Cao, Asmaa Hameed, Jacque
Walters, Konrad Dumpleton and Cyrine Almaodovar, who are coached by Ms Amor, Ms MacDonald and Marcel
Masque Salgado in Year 10, remain undefeated after 3 very tricky debates. This is a huge achievement. You should be
really proud of yourselves. Good luck for the rest of the debate season. Go Greenwood Debate Team!
Phew…so that was Term 1, now for Term 2.
It’s only Week 4 and things have started off with a BANG! Already we have had the Lightning Carnival. For the boys
there is AFL, Soccer, Volleyball and Basketball while the girls have Soccer, Netball and Volleyball. The teachers are
putting in a lot of time and effort to get it organised, so let’s make sure to be well behaved and help them out as
much as we can. Our behaviour as a Year 8 cohort so far has been great and our attendance has been as well. We
hope that everyone will have fun this Term. Ms Page will be organising some fun care group competitions, so keep your
eyes out for that.
So that is it from us at the moment make sure to keep up attendance and behaviour, do as best as you can
academically and have heaps of fun this term.
Welcome to the first Newsletter of Term 2. This term the Year 9s has been very busy with
NAPLAN and preparation for the Lightning Carnival.
At the end of last term, the Year 9s went on their Year 9 camp. The camp ran smoothly
and everyone enjoyed the experience. Many of the favourite activities were the big swing,
abseiling, rock climbing, kayaking and many others which all resulted in a fantastic camp.
This Term students will be participating in the Big Bang Science competition on 23 May. This does not go towards the
student’s grade although we do expect everyone to try their hardest.
Also, this term on 6 June the Year 9s have our Lighting Carnival. Which is where we compete against other schools in
our chosen sports. This is also followed by many excursions such as the Outdoor-Ed excursion in week 4, Science
incursions and “Champion for Change” excursions.
There is no doubt some students do find NAPLAN a stressful experience and this can affect how you are going
mentally. This is a good time to make sure you are looking after yourself. Make sure you are eating healthily, exercising
and take time to be with your friends. If something is worrying you please talk to someone you trust and don’t forget
there are some wonderful people who are always willing to help out in Student Services.
This is all from us, thank you.

Year 10— Simone Priestley and Lewis Mason
Year 11— Brooke O’Connor & Ethan De Beer
Year 12 — Taylor Ludemann and Jacob Bulliard
Year 11 is proving to be the most challenging year of our schooling so far. In saying that, it
has been inspiring to see the way the Year 11 students have embraced this challenge.
We have wasted no time getting back to our work routines after the holidays, although
some excursions have made the process a bit more enjoyable.
A couple of weeks ago the Physics students enjoyed a day at the Gravity Centre in Gingin.
Following that, the Biology students had the opportunity to go to the Zoo. Wednesday 10 May the Year 11 Volleyball
students joined the Year 10 and 12 students in the School Sport WA Volleyball Champion School Competition at
Warwick Stadium. On Friday 9 June, the Hillarys Yacht club is going to be holding the Year 11 formal. We would also like
to report that our Leavers’ Jumper Committee has been working tirelessly and are now very close to a final product;
with the rest of the year group’s approval of course!
As exams are coming up in week six, hopefully these excursions have provided a bit of a break for the ATAR students
who attended. Now that exams are fast approaching, it is a good time to start making notes and collecting any extra
study material that could help you. This is the best time to exercise your time management skills and to be clarifying
your understanding with your teachers. This time could be stressful but if you mange your time and resources well, it
might not be. But as Jim Rohn said, “Discipline is the bridge between goals and accomplishment.”
Hi my name is Simone and I am honoured to lead the Year 10s for another year. I
enjoy playing netball and clarinet. My name is Lewis and I am stepping up for the first
time as Student Councillor in college. A bit of info about me: I play a lot of tennis and
guitar outside of school. I also enjoy listening to music and scrolling through edgy
memes on Facebook.
To start off lets recap on some past events. On Wednesday 10 May, Years 10-12 took part in a Volleyball tournament at
Warwick stadium against roughly 10 other schools. Congratulations to the ‘A’ Division Girl and Boy teams on winning
their division.
Let’s move on to careers - during week 3 and 4 Mr Bowdell came into all our HASS classes and talked careers with us,
recommending pathways and ATAR courses. Coming up in week 8 on Wednesday 28 June 4-7pm, we have the Parent
Information night, bringing our parents into the mix. Hopefully everyone picks the right course and enjoys it!
Also coming up is the Year 10 Short Play Festival, taking place on Monday June 26 and Tuesday June 27. Open to
everyone who is interested, with tickets going on sale soon. Something that everyone is dreading, Meningococcal
vaccinations. Forms have been sent out so make sure to get yours in to secure your place in line.
Don’t forget to wear your proper Greenwood College uniform, with winter fast approaching, students will be tempted
to wear hoodies underneath their schools clothes to keep themselves warm. We suggest to wear a Greenwood
College sweater or a long white or navy blue sweater with no branding or writing underneath your jacket.
Enjoy the rest of your term and hang in there, it will be worth it at the end of the day.
Year 10s out.
Term 1 has flown past and we are nearly half way into Term 2. There have been many
events, activities and occasions such as: The Penguin Island paddle boarding camp
for Outdoor Education, in which the students paddled around the island, did a bit of
sightseeing and participated in a number of activities at Ern Halliday. There has also
been a Geography excursion where students explored Perth city and discussed its
functionality and efficiency, the ANZAC Remembrance Assembly, the beginning of EST’s and soon the exams. Finally,
all of the Senior Boys and Girls Interschool Sport teams have commenced their seasons, with the Senior Boys Football
team playing their last official game for the season on Wednesday 17 May at 4 pm on the football oval.
With Ms Hollis away on a cruise for the next couple of weeks it has become the sole responsibility of the committees
involved to plan the Year 12 Leavers’ Assembly and so far it’s looking to be pretty good with some very interesting and
different ideas. On a final note, it is imperative that the Year 12s stay on top of all their work and make sure that they
are switched on as the exams and EST’s make this the most important part of Year 12.

House System Ms Ayers House Co-ordinator
The battle for the House Championship is heating up! We had a massive push in points from the end of Term 1 due to
the top student in each class being awarded 5 house points! Well done to our students participating and earning
points in academic, behavioural, academic, sport carnival and extra-curricular categories.
Current standings are as follows:
Attendance Results – Term 1
Attendance is highly valued at Greenwood College and the following Care Groups earned 100 points towards their
house due to top attendance across their year groups!
7C2, 8C2, 9F2, 10F1, 11S1, 12F2, IFPS1, LCG1
In addition, over 100 students were awarded 5 points each for attending school 100% of Term 1! Well done to all of
our top attendees!
Leadership Care Group – Photo Scavenger Hunt
Through the end of Term 1, our House Captains and Student Councillors participated in a Photo Scavenger Hunt
across Greenwood College during Care Group, recess and lunch time to build on leadership and teamwork skills.
Students were given a list of tasks to complete and encouraged to answer the most questions in the most creative
manner. A few of the best photos are shown below:
Curtin Update – Year 11 House Captains Ethan DeBeer and Ibrihim Sow
The past month has been one of great struggle and now with exams coming up it’s going to be even more so for
ATAR students. For those in year 7 to year 10, although it may seem like a long time to the end of your school days, if
you put in the effort required in all areas you will reap the rewards. I guess this house points system is a direct example
of how many ordinary students have made an effort to achieve and now are credited for their astonishing achieve-
ments. Curtin was and is still the best house, stepping up to the plate and earning an immense amount of points. Cur-
tin currently leads the points system due to many achieving academic achievements, social achievements and 100%
attendance. Also the swimming carnival last term was success, with Curtin coming in first place overall. Here are
those outstanding students who achieved top house points for Curtin:

Forrest Update – Year 11 House Captains Samuel Burrell and Aden DeVilliers
Hi, we are your Year 11 House Captain representatives. We are proud to announce we have moved up to third place
after a rocky start at the beginning of last term. Our goal is to get as many points as possible to get to the top of 2017.
Stirling Update – Year 11 House Captains Jamie Smith and Muhammad Zaimizi
In the past month, a couple events have happened at our school. Obviously, we had our first term holiday two weeks
ago. It was a time for students to take some steam off and have a good break. We came back to school on a
Wednesday and got straight back to work. On Friday of Week 1, we had the ANZAC assembly. This was good for us to
remember those who sacrificed their lives in World Wars. Students can earn House Points by being a good student.
100% Attendance is a way to help the Stirling faction. So far, Stirling is third for Attendance.
O’Connor Update – Year 11 House Captains Leon Teav and Daniel Lowther
The time period of March has been quite the engaging month, especially for those in years 7 and 8 who have been
adjusting to the high school life, obtaining painful immunisation shots and partying away in a river cruise at Elizabeth
Quay!
The after becoming familiarised with the school, the year 9’s ended up working hard representing the school in the
traditional annual swimming carnival whilst also bracing for their time going to be spent at camp!
Already halfway through their high school careers, the year 10’s prepare themselves for the outdoor education camp
and take on the faces of OLNA while also participating in the swimming carnival.
ATAR Year 11 students have been standing at the gates of hell attempting to ready themselves for the upcoming ex-
ams in the second term, many students in the year ended up venturing out on excursions such as the Physics students
travelling to the Gravity Discovery Centre.
Finally, the year 12 veterans gear up and try to enjoy their final year the best they can while attempting to leap over
obstacles such as many tests, exams, stress, and more stress.
O’Connor has obtained house points through numerous performed actions such as:
Pro-social voluntary actions eg. helping someone in need
Participation in activities eg. swimming carnivals
Being optimistic, resilient, persistent, confident, and organised eg. being a great person
Consistency in your work eg. doing work on or ahead of time

Dance Mrs Merrin
Dance Teacher
Basketball at Greenwood College is so popular that we entered a Senior
Boys team in the School Sports Western Australia Competition this year. For
the past eight school weeks, we have played many schools in the local
region and it was great to discover what the competition was all about.
We had some very close games and learnt a lot about the sport, each other
and what a privilege it is to represent our school. This was highlighted by an
email from a Balcatta SHS teacher who went on to say “All the students
were so friendly and polite, a real credit to the teaching staff and
the school”.
That demeanor was tested when we had a heated altercation during our
Balga SHS game. To the boys’ credit, they showed restraint and remarkable
sportsmanship in a difficult situation. I must also mention Indya Lestani
who was the only girl in the team and certainly shocked the other schools
with her skill! A big thank you must go to Mr Law for his assistance too.
The following students should be very proud of their efforts and conduct
throughout the season:
Year 11s: Rainer Alemania, John Cu, Sean Jiggins, Poomipat
Kanjanapairoj, Arnan Van Huyssteen.
Year 12s: Corey Jennis, Maker Kethiek, Indya Lestani, Dominick McColl,
Apichart Pike, Leo Shi and Rayan Zare.
Term two involves the Tuesday lunchtime basketball tournament, which
pits faction against faction! We currently have Years 10, 11 & 12 in battle.
Years 7, 8 & 9 (The Net Flicks) – You’re next!
Basketball Mr Walczak
Physical Ed. Teacher
Firstly we would like to congratulate Mrs Hannah Winter on the birth of her beautiful daughter and welcome Mrs Caitlin
McCarthy to the dance department, we are very lucky to have her on board.
Cheerleading
Congratulations to all students that were successful in gaining a place in the Titans and
Knights Cheer and Dance teams this year. The Knights are working on their cheer, jazz, hip
hop and lyrical routines for their upcoming Gold Coast tour. They also held a Bunning’s BBQ at
the end of last month to help fundraise for the cost of the trip, it was a very successful day for
everyone involved. The Titans are also working on their cheer and lyrical routines for their first
competition of the year Rock n Cheer on 29/30 July. We wish both teams the best of luck for
their first competitions of the year.
Parent Support
The Dance department held their first parent support meeting at the end of last term. Thank you to everyone that
attended. We still need more volunteers with cutting out of fabric for the making of new costumes. If anyone is
available for this please contact the dance department.
Student Choreography Night
All students are currently working on their own choreography in preparation for the annual Student Choreography
Night. This performance will be held in the school gymnasium on 19 July. Please pencil this in your diary!
Choreography Night
There has been a date change with the dress rehearsal for the end of year Choreography Night. Details are as follows;
Dress Rehearsal- Saturday 14 October
Performance- Friday 20 October This is a compulsory event for all Dance students so please make sure you keep these dates free!
