…..Going, going, gone! No, I’m not talking about the old school building onHill Street. I’m referring to that great American pastime, baseball. Everyspring a radio voice uses this common phrase to paint a picture for the lis-tener of a ball hit over the fence for a home run. The home-run fence be-comes the ultimate measuring stick in the game of baseball. If a hitter sur-passes that benchmark he can do no greater.

Hopefully, we have eradicated that concept in educating students at Brookvilleand throughout the country. The goal is “continuous improvement.” Thehome-run fence is not stationary, the benchmark continues to increase. At times it is a daunting task.Imagine if every year ball players were told the home-run fence will be moved back this year in aneffort to see if you can hit the ball farther. In fact, in most professional parks the fence has beenshortened to capture the excitement of celebrating a home run. So when and how do you ever celebratewithin a system that continues to push the ultimate goal farther and farther away?

We celebrate this time of year annually as a group of seniors reach qualifications to become graduatesand pursue life’s dreams. We celebrate regularly your successes as alumni because we know we haveplayed some role in that success. We have also learned the importance of celebrating day-to-day singlesand doubles. In the world of continuous improvement there are limited home runs. However, helpingeach child take strides toward reaching our benchmarks is a positive. In the classroom, throughout thefine arts program, and across the athletic fields, we see our students making continuous progress to-ward becoming the kind of graduates that will make each of you proud.

I ask that each and every day you remain positive, enthusiastic, and supportive about the school districtyou live in, whether that is Brookville or some other community. Understand there are no widgetsbeing produced that result in a final product. There are, in fact, few home runs ever recognized. How-ever, students, parents, teachers, support personnel, and administrators are working their hardest toshow improvement toward benchmarks that are continually being raised. And so it should be, becausea continuous improvement of the world we live in is at stake!

By: Matt Hoffman, Class of ‘06Student Body President

I have had the best of both worlds. I have been able to attend highschool in two uniquely different, yet utterly wonderful buildings. The first, steeped in tradition, pride, and history, was the old Hill Street building. Alocal landmark, that school could have told countless stories—of friend-ships made, things learned, and hard-fought victories. Any Brookville stu-dent, past or present, can attest to the feeling of respect and awe that thebuilding commanded sitting prominently overlooking the city of Brookville. And as much as the students joked about the condition of the building, thebuilding was truly loved.

Out With the Old, In With the New?

This love became even more apparent for me on my first day at the new 4-12 building. Walkingthe halls of the new building, I was humbled by the magnitude and grandeur of the building. Thecommunity and the district truly did a remarkable job designing and constructing a building that offersthe latest equipment, resources, and tools while proudly showing our “Blue Devil” pride. However, adjustment did not come easily for me or for most of the student body. New rules, a new schedule, andthe adjustment to the new complex constantly reminded me of the old building. Something seemed tobe missing.

I discovered what this something was on one very cold night in Oakwood. Our boys soccer teamhad just lost the district finals game to Oakwood by a score of 6-2. The win was very bittersweet for mebecause even though it was my last high school soccer game, our team had made Brookville history—we had advanced farther than any other BHS soccer team. Looking out into the crowd, I finally real-ized something about my time at BHS: that I was a part of a larger group. This group transcends all agelevels, all nationalities, and all talents. This group is made of all BHS graduates, teachers, coaches, administrators, and community members. I realized that what was missing from the new high schoolhad actually been there the whole time: the concept of family, camaraderie, pride, and love for ourschool.

I learned that night that what makes Brookville High so great is that being a student makesyou part of a larger family. The building doesn’t matter—what matters is the lifelong lessonslearned, the friendships made, and the moral and character traits taught. The student body didn’tneed to be reminded of the school’s history or pride. We needed to rekindle our love for our schooland our community in the new building and to transfer our “Brookville family” to our new home.Even though the walls have changed, our family and pride still live on at 1 Blue Pride Drive.
