Greetings Greyhounds,

Happy New Year and welcome back! I hope everyone had a joyous and restful holiday break. As we begin the second semester, we now have the opportunity to reflect. Many of you have decided on a New Year’s resolution, while others are still trying to decide. However, I’d like to take the opportunity to offer some ideas and reminders to ensure your child continues to be successful at Lincoln Park Academy in 2016:

* Monitor your child’s school work. Whether classwork or homework, check in with your child by asking them, “What did you learn today?” You’ll be surprised of the answer.

* Ensure your child attends school every day and is on time for school. The more students are in school, the higher their achievement. Studies have shown poor attendance causes students to get behind and makes it much more difficult for them to catch up, increasing their chances of being unsuccessful.

* Reward your child for their effort and not just high grades. The best way to motivate further effort is to notice it. You’ll be sure to see great results.

* Finally, continue to be involved! Parent involvement is a major factor leading to student success. At LPA, we offer many opportunities for parents to be involved, like participating in our School Advisory Council (SAC), which meets monthly. I invite you to seek out opportunities and join us whenever you can.

Let’s start 2016 on the right foot, by doing right, because it is right to do right in all we do.

IB Department News Happy New Year!

Welcome back to school and the second half of our year. Having completed the first semester, we now stand ready to finish the school year with confidence. My hope is that our students will build on their achievements and rise to the challenges of the new semester. Diploma Program students face a wide variety of assessment tasks that are both rigorous and extensive in the second semester. In January, seniors will be completing their IB English Orals. This assignment requires that students be prepared to analyze works of literature and share their perspectives during a recorded 20-minute interview. Our students are very well-prepared for this internal assessment, and I am confident that they will do an outstanding job. Students, please make note of the upcoming senior assignments for January which include:

* English Orals 1/11 – 1/15 and 1/19 – 1/21

* Harbor Branch 1/19 and 1/21

* World Literature final revisions 1/22

Important dates for juniors include:

* English Oral presentations Throughout the month of January

* Musical Investigations rough drafts 1/8

* Extended Essay outline 1/12

* Psychology Design Experiments 1/28 and 1/29

Our 10th grade MYP students are currently working on the Personal Project. This project has been designed to encourage students to explore an area of personal interest and create a project for presentation. The project is a reflection of the students’ ability to manage and direct their own inquiry while at the same time reflecting on their MYP experience. Our students have created many interesting and inspiring projects over the years. We look forward to the new projects that will be displayed at our Personal Project gallery this year.

I look forward to another productive and prosperous year with excitement about the great possibilities that are ahead of us as we complete our 2015-2016 school year.

Guidance Department News

Guidance will begin the registration process for the 2016-17 school year during the month of

January. Counselors will be meeting with each grade level to present curriculum information and

registration forms. Students, please begin to think about the classes you would like to take next school year. Speak with your parents and teachers to see what courses they recommend. Please

remember to take the most rigorous courses you can. College acceptance depends on rigorous

coursework, grade point averages, community service projects and hours, recommendations, and

test scores.

If you are in 10th, 11th or 12th grade and you plan to take Dual Enrollment classes for next year,

you will need a cumulative grade point average of 3.0; and acceptable PERT scores of Reading

(106), Writing (103), and Math (114). The PERT is given Monday through Thursday 8:00am to

5:30 pm and Fridays, 8:00 am.- 1:30 pm at Indian River College, Building “W”.

Seniors:

1) Complete your Bright Futures application online if you haven’t done so already, so that your transcript may be evaluated at the end of semester 1. This evaluation will give you important

information on what you may still be missing for Bright Futures, giving you time to bring test

scores or GPA up before the final evaluation in August. The Bright Futures website is: http://

www.floridastudentfinancialaid.org/SSFAD/bf.

2) Apply for the Free Application for Federal Student Financial Aid starting January 1 (midnight) at: www.fafsa.ed.gov.

3) Please turn in volunteer hours to Mr. Crisci, Registrar, at the front office, in order for hours to

be recorded on transcript.

4) Please turn in all college acceptance letters (whether you plan to attend or not) to Mrs.

Salvador, Guidance Department; and scholarship award letters to Mr. Gray, Room 251.

Response to Intervention Behavior News

The Response to Intervention Behavior (RTI-B) team will start the New Year off with a bang as we continue to celebrate student success and achievement. For

the next several months we will focus on our school-wide expectation, the Four P’s. The January focus is Promptness, the February focus is Preparedness, the

March focus is Productivity and our April focus is Practicing Respect. Students who exhibit success and mastery of our school-wide expectations will have multi-ple opportunities to be rewarded for their participation and compliance.

Health News Attention Parents of 6th Grade Students:

As the first half of the school year comes to an end, I would like to remind you that all sixth (6th)

grade students must receive a TDap immunization before entering 7th grade. Now is the time to

stop by your pediatrician’s office, Health Department or local Walk-In Clinic to have your child’s

shots updated, if you have not already done so. Please make sure you obtain the 680 State Form

and return it to the school clinic. Should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to

The winter teams are starting off with a great season. The Spring season will begin as soon as

the students return from Winter break. Be sure you have your clearance card with you on the

first date in order to take part.

Baseball: Conditioning will continue 1/05 - 1/15. Tryouts will take place on January 18th -

22nd @ 3:00pm - 5:30pm for the JV and varsity teams. Middle School tryouts will take place on

January 19th - January 22nd @ 5:30pm - 7:30pm at Lawnwood.

Softball: Varsity tryouts will take place on January 11th @ 4:15pm - 6:30pm. JV tryouts will

take place on January 13th @ 4:15pm - 6:30pm at the Lawnwood Softball Field.

Tennis: Conditioning will begin on January 6th - January 7th @ 2:00pm - 3:30pm. Tryouts will

take place on January 11th - 13th @ 2:00pm - 4:00pm at LPA tennis courts.

Track & Field: Starts on January 20th @ 2:00pm at Lawnwood Stadium.

Intramural girls and boys basketball: practice will continue on Mondays and Wednesdays @

1:45pm - 3:00pm starting January 6th.

Tournaments: All “B” teams will take place on Saturday, February 20th

Girls “A” teams will take place on Saturday, February 27th

Boys “A” teams will take place on Saturday, March 5th

Both “A” team finals will take place on Saturday, March 12th.

Music News IRSC-4 County 7-8 Honor Band

Congratulations to the Middle School students accepted to be part of the 2016 IRSC 4-County

Honor Band! These seven 8th grade band students will be representing Lincoln Park Academy

as they perform with some of the best Middle School musicians in the four county area.

History Fair News History Fair projects are due on January 14th (orange day) and January 15th (black day).

Work will be considered late after these dates. Remember process paper and annotated

bibliography are also due on these days. Should you have any questions or concerns, please

contact Ms. Etta Wilson, MS110. The school History Fair will take place on Thursday,

January 21st (orange day) and Friday, January 22nd (black day). Three students from each

category will be chosen to represent Lincoln Park Academy at the County History Fair on

February 23rd at IRSC. More information will follow in February regarding county

competition.

National Honor Society News The National Honor Society is continuing to pair up with Hope’s Closet for a January fund-

raiser. If you have any jackets or blankets that you would like to donate for this community

organization, please bring them in during the week of January 18th and 25th. Donations

may be dropped off in Mrs. Spooner’s room (HS201).

The January National Honor Society meeting will be held on January 14th in the cafeteria

from 1:45pm - 2:30pm. Be sure to organize your transportation and listen to the morning

announcements for materials to bring.

Applications for consideration and admission to the National Honor Society will be available

on January 21st. Students must complete all parts of the application and turn it in on time,

as specified on the paperwork. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact
