Oktoberfest in Owosso Oktoberfest presented by Dort Federal Credit Union returns for two days on Friday, October 12th and Saturday, October 13th. Organized by the Shiawassee Regional Chamber of Commerce, Oktoberfest will take place in a large tent (The Biergarten) in the parking lot of Exchange and Water streets in Downtown Owosso. Family events will continue on to Ball and Exchange Streets.

Chamber of Commerce President/CEO Jeff Deason stated, “The Shiawassee Regional Chamber of Commerce created Oktoberfest to celebrate the spirit of friendship and to honor Shiawassee County’s heritage and agricultural traditions. With many community partners, we are planning a festive, fall celebration and invite all residents to join in the fun! Our thanks to Dort Federal Credit Union for being our 2018 presenting sponsor of Oktoberfest.”

Returning this year will be authentic German food served in The Biergarten. From a German butchery near Munich, Oktoberfest has received permission to use a 200-year old family recipe for traditional German Bratwurst. The German bratwurst will be served at Oktoberfest 2018! The secret recipe has been tested and perfected by Willi’s Sausage Co. of Frankenmuth.

The “Beer Run” 5K walk/run will take place on Friday evening at 6:30 p.m. New this year, the Shiawassee Family YMCA will hold a 3-on-3 basketball tournament beginning Saturday at 10 a.m. There will also be a Likewater Crossfit Competition at 10 a.m. on Saturday. From 1 pm to 3 pm on Saturday on the Armory lawn, there will be free children’s activities including make and take pumpkin painting, bounce house and pumpkin bowling with prizes.

Friday evening’s music line up will be Lenny Gomulka and The Chicago Push Band alternating with the DynaBrass of Toledo, Ohio. Saturday afternoon Oktoberfest welcomes the 35 piece German Band: Ein Prosit. The band will be playing from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Also on Saturday, The Biergarten will feature “Happy Hour” from 2:00-4:00 p.m. with buy one, get one free admission. At 5:00 p.m. polka music will begin with the international touring and 12-time Grammy nominee Lenny Gomulka and the Chicago Push Band from Massachusetts. The Chicago Push band will alternate with Gerry Kaminski’s Polka network, hailing from the Grand Rapids area. Both six-piece bands will play until 11:30 p.m. There will be polka lessons, a beer stein endurance contest and live music all in the main event tent.

Admission to the Biergarten is $10.00 per day or $15.00 for a weekend armband. Designated drivers will be provided free admission and a special armband for complimentary nonalcoholic beverages. Lenny Gomulka & The Chicago Push BandReturning to Owosso for the fifth year will be Lenny Gomulka & The Chicago Push from Massachusetts. The “Push” style of polka music is a term that was coined & trademarked by Lenny Gomulka in January of 1980 when he formed his band named “Chicago Push”. Now, 34 years later, the “Push” style of polka music is well known among young musicians and polka audiences everywhere. Lenny Gomulka has led his band the Chicago Push in travels throughout the U.S. and abroad. In recognition of his music he has received a multitude of Grammy Award nominations, Polka Music Awards, Keys to City’s and he has even earned an Induction into the International Polka Music Hall of Fame. “Push Records” is the vehicle by which Lenny Gomulka markets his music. And his music is both traditional, appealing to the more mature fan as well as innovative, appealing to the young polka fan. It’s polka music, “Chicago Push” style and it’s all about keeping polka music alive. Lenny Gomulka delivers Chicago Push style music with the ultimate polka fan in mind. Authentic German Bratwurst at This Year’s Oktoberfest

Returning to Oktoberfest 2018…authentic “Bratwurst Rezept.” Here is the story of the bratwurst to be featured at this year’s event, written by Owosso resident Monika Gibson: I was born in Nordhalben, a beautiful little town in the State of Bavaria, Germany. Our hometown butcher, Mr. Heinz Lautenschläger, made the best Bratwurst ever! People who had moved away, came back just to buy tons of Brats in order to take them back to their new city. So did my husband George and l. There were many weekends that my family spent time at Grandma Anni and my brother Manfred’s in Germany. Almost my entire family lives in Nordhalben. George was the ONLY American there and everybody just loved him. My brother and George spent many hours in

the guest-houses. One night, over a couple of beers, they discussed the Bratwurst recipe with Mr. Lautenschläger. When the word spread that we would leave Germany in order to live in Owosso, Mr. Lauten-schläger said to George, “I will give you the recipe. You give it a try in the states!” In 2000, we moved here with three little boys and a dog. It was so overwhelming that we did not even think about Bratwurst. After 17 years living here, our friend Kathryn talked about the Owosso Oktoberfest and the desire to have authentic German food. We men-tioned the Bratwurst recipe! I found the recipe among our “important papers!” As we looked at it we realized that it didn’t show the exact amount of spices, for example 3g nutmeg, 6g ginger, etc.Last summer, when I visited my family, my brother said, “Why don’t you ask Manfred Müller?” He is a butcher and worked for Mr. Lautenschläger for many years. Mr. Lauten-schläger passed away a couple of years ago. Manfred is a very nice young man. He told me exactly what and how we needed to do it, which machines we would need, and gave us the spices. So here we go! Hopefully everybody will like the Bratwürste like we do. They will be offered on a bun with German mustard, the typical Bavarian way. their current skills by attending classes at MLTAI. Laborers’ who are new to the trade can acquire the

necessary skills to enter the construction industry with a

degree of confi dence.

WHAT DOES IT COST?MLTAI offers this training to union

Construction Craft Laborers’ completely

free of charge. The training is paid by contractors that are

signatory to the LIUNA Local Unions located in Michigan.

OUR GOALIt is the goal of MLTAI to

satisfy the training needs of Construction Craft Laborers’,

Local Laborer Unions and Contractors alike.

To accomplish this goal, MLTAI develops specifi c

courses as needed, and if necessary will take the

training to the Laborers’ by way of satellite courses.

Launch your small business or expand an existing one!MI-SBDC is a statewide organization funded in part through a cooperative agreement with the U.S. Small Business Administration, the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) and through local host support. The MI-SBDC provides no cost counseling, business education, planning assistance and guidance for any new ventures, existing and growing businesses, and innovative technology ventures.

The Small Business Association’s program partner, The Michigan Small Business Development Center (MI-SBDC), has provided small business assistance in Michigan for over 38 years. The I-69 Trade Corridor Regional Office of MI-SBDC, which serves a 7-county region, is located in Flint and hosted by Kettering University. The Shiawassee satellite office is located at the Chamber of Commerce, 215 N. Water Street, Owosso.
