HEALTHY LIVING CENTRE DURING AND AFTER THE GLASGOW COMMONWEALTH GAMESAD Tectonics | Civic Identity : Making Sense of Place

Temenos is a Greek word meaning sacred space surrounding a temple or alter. The artist wanted the sculpture to be “a symbol of regeneration of the healing of a region and regeneration of a transforming society.” This is an appropriate influence as Anish Kapoor designed the 2012 Olympic viewing tower, as the site is so closely located to the Commonwealth games.

Temenos is a hyperboloid shape that celebrates perfection through engineering. The material is a manipulation of a grid acheived through the high tensioning of the wires reminiscent to the tension in Dalmarnock. It draws comparisons to the Angel of the North as a symbol of regeneration but aesthetically to a large butterfly net or chinese finger trap

The piece has a fabric nature; ‘fragile materiality’ acting as if unaffected by gravity. It could be conceived that this piece acts as the bridge between the 2014 Commonwealth Games and the local area of Dalmarnock.

INTERPRETATION OF TEMENOS

Initially a literal approach was taken, modelling the form using tight material stretched over two rings and pulled taught.

MANIPULATION ON AN AXIS

Through modelling the piece using the tight material this expressed a sense of anti gravity and tension through the pulling between the sections

In the previous model there was a status quo between the sections being most interesting looking at the end pieces. It was particularly fascinating seeing how at certain angles different amount of light was allowed through the material due to material being stretched more at different parts.

CHANGING THE ANGLE OF THE RINGS

This status quo was addressed by adding rings to this shape to see how the form changed. By tilting the rings and placing them in different locations, closer and further apart this affected the paraboloids.

MANIPULATING ON AN ALTERNATIVE AXIS

So far the material had just been manipulated along one axis so I addressed what would happen to the material on a different axis, pulling the middle ring perpendicular direction.

This was continued by adding another hyperboloid to investigate how they meet and the shape created.

The basic shape was modelled on the computer, to understand the net form. This demonstrates how the form consists of a series of straight lines linking back to the Temenos piece and the manipulation of the grid format.

GRAVITY AND ANTONI GAUDI

The Temenos piece gives the illusion of floating being almost unaffected by gravity; an anti-gravity. I addressed the antithesis of this by studying Gaudi’s work. His work is similar in the use of parabolic forms however is gravity based. To appreciate his works one of his models was recreated. Gaudi built a model with lead shots and string to understand the nature of parabolic arches once turned upside down. Both Temenos and Gaudi’s model derive from a grid.

CREATING CURVES FROM STRAIGHT LINES

I was intrigued in understanding the nature of parabolic forms and how they are created through manipulating a grid. I therefore created this model showing by progressively rotating a series of straight lines along an axis it creates a paraboloid.

INITIAL IDEA

I identified the basic form of the mesh to wrap over HLC underneath. This was developed from the study of Temenos, as I wanted to reiterate this sense of anti gravity.

The intention was for this structure to act as a gateway for Dalmarnock, and as a catalyst for regeneration along with being a memory of the Commonwealth Games. However the challenge was to create a sense of civicness within this structure.

DEVELOPMENT

From the basic form I turned this into a grid mesh consisting of steels and PTFE inserts, due to the double curvature. From this I added structural legs in the appropriate positions, however the structure did not seam to float, appearing weighted on one side.. The back section rose up too much which would not provide much shelter for underneath.

FINAL DESIGN

The development of HLC underneath informed the shape of the canopy. The canopy acts links to the buildings underneath in three different sections. The canopy forms the roof of the main hall then branching to create canopy of the roof cafe. Doctors surgery linked to roof through roof lights providing snap shots of the structure,

The canopy was developed to accommodate the Doctors Surgery after the Commonwealth Games. The shell dips down to provide shelter for the viewing platform on top of the Doctors Surgery from the prevailing south westerly winds. This also frames the entrance way leading in on the bridge, along with the structural supports.

Page 28: Gregory Chatfield - Undergraduate Portfolio 4th Year

Steel structural columns, 150x150mm. As well as supporting the underlying structure, the canopy rests on these structural columns in the hall giving a sense of anti-gravity. This structural system is shown in the detail to the right.

The alignment of the canopy and the steel columns of the hall, is based on the grid shown above, to ensure that they align. The inspiration of using a grid was somewhat taken from the study of Temenos, in which a grid created the form.

The rotation of the walls in the plan also align to this grid.

The people in the Healthy Living Centre are engaged with the roof in three different ways depending on where they are in the building,

In the hall, the canopy forms the roof structure, but on the roof cafe it provides an cover for an external space (see next page). In the Training Centre Breakout area (right)and Doctors Surgery consulting rooms snapshots of the canopy are provided through the roof lights.

DURING THE COMMONWEALTH GAMES:

The hall shall be set up with Commonwealth Games stalls, for visitors to enquire about volunteering for the games, the sporting activities that are being held and so forth.

AFTER THE COMMONWEALTH GAMES

Next to the hall is storage room, see plan below, so the hall can be used for a variety of different uses, such as for stage productions with the landscaped seating outside covered by the canopy. Sport activities such as badminton and gym equipment can also be used in the main hall, shown on the right page.
